As Simple as it is Powerful.......2006-12-18

I am a BIG believer in Bill Williams and his body of work.

I will admit, this book is the most confusing of his three. It is also the FIRST book of his three. If you buy this now, buy it to "fill in the blanks" but use his later works as the backbone of your trading.

I have personally met with Bill, taken his home study course and even attended a private tutorial. Bill is the real deal. He is a *highly* profitable trader and Bill trades EXACTLY like he describes in his books (simplified over time, so Trading Chaos, 2nd Ed. is the LATEST and most refined method).

READ THE FIRST CHAPTER OF THIS BOOK (it's free online here, just click on excerpts). This chapter alone is worth the entire book. If you just want to trade with no other background information, Buy Trading Chaos, 2nd Edition (not this book) and start with chapter seven. When you get to the end of the book, you'll say, "That's it?!?! Than can't be it!" That's what I said. I then went on to take his home study course (13 weeks) and then went to a private tutorial. 95% of the methodology is IN THE BOOK! The more advanced stuff is for those who are scaling into positions and want more aggressive money management techniques.

Who am I to say this works? I started trading Bill's techniques from scratch. In LESS than 6 months I was up 95% in a medium sized account. I found some like-minded investors and we started our own Hedge Fund (more specifically, a commodity pool). I called Bill personally and he spoke with me at length about how I should flow into and out of my positions, etc. He went far above and beyond the call of duty. I cannot speak to how well my Pool is doing (not legal to disclose - considered solicitation of investors), so I cannot give figures of returns for the Pool.

Buy Trading Chaos 2nd Edition (not this book) and then buy "New Trading Dim mentions" (his second book) and read chapters 9 - 11. Those chapters will give you more ideas of the SCOPE of just what is possible when you simplify your trading and align it with natural market tendencies (chaos principles).

Incomprehensible.......2005-11-07

I am a lawyer and have spent most of my life reading, and had read many books on trading before I read this one. It looked like the holy grail, so the three or four key chapters, I read over and over trying to determine 3 simple things: Where to buy/sell short, where to place the stop loss, where to exit the trade. I confess, I was never able to determine that, from the text, although the author seems to assume that he has made that clear to the reader.

The five stars is only for the cover. However, the content of the book is pathetic. I have read many trading books and several chaos books and I can honestly say this book is neither. I fell for the enlightened self-similar structure cover and wasted my money. Don't repeat my mistake.

If you are interested in chaos and trading, start with Edgar Peters books such as Chaos and the Capital Markets.

The publisher, Wiley, should be ashamed to put out this sort of drivel. Bill Williams is a joke. If you think your trading style is based on your body type, then maybe this book will help you feel better about losing; otherwise skip it and Bill Williams, PhD.'s other lobotomized treatises on trading.

Trader Development.......2003-06-27

This book really is mistitled. Chaos theory for markets is not presented, so look elsewhere for that. The book does present a good theory for the psychology of trading such as "traders differ on value but agree on price" as motivation and explains the development of traders from novice, intermediate, and advanced (skip master and expert level)and the goals for each level. Unfortunately, the methodology for trading with a Chaos background is not touched upon.

Good filler read for background on trading and personal development. Poor on methodology for trading with Chaos. Perhaps Mr. Williams had an epiphany and contends all trades are done in Chaos, so traders should relax. To borrow a line from another author, "some trades will, some trades won't, so what, next trade please."

Donate your money to charity.......2003-03-25

In the first few chapters, he sounds so attractive, after that, you will find the author using new technical analysis words to describe the breakthrough of the resistance/support and claims this a new concept/idea, but he saying nothing on the book and if you are using his method to trade, you are not far from bankruptcy.
Eventually, you waste your money, then why don't send cheque to charities.

Frank Schaeffer has written a book that is unforgettable. It is funny, wise, well paced and plotted and very insightful. A must read for all recovering fundamentalists.

In "Saving Grandma", Calvin Dort Becker shifts between the nearly unbearable tension in his family chalet/mission that began with his unbelieving grandmother coming to live with his missionary family, and the nearly equally unbearable tension of adolescence. I found both the portraits of his family--particularly his father and his grandmother, who come to the fore more than his mother and sisters in this sequel to "Portofino"--to be compelling and interesting, and the crisis his father created in his ministry to be humorously absurd but nonetheless genuine. And I absolutely adored Calvin's fantasy life where his thoughts would escape from the travails at home into his imagined time with his beloved Jennifer.

What seemed missing to me was any connection between the narrator--an older Calvin in the first person--and the parts of Calvin that are not typical of nearly fifteen year-old boys: his illiteracy and his blindness to the incredible chances he is willing to take with others' lives, as when he nearly kills the "spastics" his family mission cared for, or when he tampers with his grandmother's IV. The narrator neither judges his prior life nor explains how he got from there to here.

I did, however, laugh out loud, particularly at the ending when he returned to Portofino and I smiled a lot at the end.

A Good Sequel to "Portofino".......2003-03-04

It's even more trouble for the Becker missionary family when the unsaved, uncouth, and unpleasant mother of Ralph Becker moves in to their Switzerland chalet. Young Calvin, now fifteen years old and full of adolescent longing for his girlfriend Jennifer, must put up not only with the thoroughly distasteful antics of his grandmother, but also endure the nasty aftershocks of a church split and watch his father grow more and more unhinged. Though Grandma is unpleasant, over time, he begins to see how perhaps they had more in common than he had thought, which spurs him to think about whether he really belongs in his increasingly loony family at all.

This novel, the sequel to Portofino, takes place two years after the events in that book. It is a longer and less humorous novel than the first, and is also a bit less focused as a result. Schaeffer's best passages, as in the first book, deal with the excesses of the evangelical subculture and in the lovely portraits of the Italian coast, which is largely filtered through Calvin's sex-driven fantasies in this novel. Most of the humor this time comes from aspects that will make evangelicals raise their eyebrows: Grandma's profuse swearing, the lampoons of fundamentalist seperatism, and sex, lots of it, sometimes quite explicit (par for the course for a mainstream literary novel--but really hot for an evangelical novel). Much of the pathos of the book, for this reader, comes from Calvin's intense longing to be with his true love and his alienation from the subculture that his family inhabits and embodies. The combination of the two is still a potent mix, and it is set inside a rollicking, fast-paced narrative that made the book a genuine page-turner from start to finish. Some of the situations seemed a tad exaggerated to be believable (such as the church split situation), but the novel's other strengths readily overcame the brief suspension of belief. I can readily recommend the book in conjunction with Portofino.

A Sweet Comming Of Age Story Set In The Alps.......2002-11-15

I started reading Schaeffer with his funny and touching Portofino. I was sure he could not top that book. He did! Saving Grandma is the best thing since Huck Fin, no kidding Andre Dubus (House of Sand and Fog) calls Shaeffer "The new American Twain" and he is not exagerating. Saving Grandma cuts to the heart of what it meansd to grow up. It is also the best book I've ever read about growing up ion a religious houshold. Maybe this is the perfect novel about being young! My book club rated this book as the favorite of the year.

Real sex versus phony sex.......2002-10-29

If the story is somewhat autobiographical it helps explain why Edith Schaeffer's (Frank's mother's) version of how L'Abri was started, an account which I read many years ago, is much more spiritual and has so many more answered prayers than any of my efforts have ever had. The L'Abri book made me feel that my own church experiences were deeply lacking, and that somewhere out there was an amazing version of church and evangelism. Frank's novel debunks that myth. I am saddened to have that myth debunked, while at the same time relieved. I am angry at evangelicalism's weakness for exaggerating and puffing the resume. It only ends up discouraging people who want to serve God.

At first I was turned off by the constant preoccupation with sex in the book, but then I remembered how I was as a teenager--constantly preoccupied with sex. I ended up being deeply thankful for the way the book portrayed teenage sexuality-an idealized, faithful and profoundly God-created sexuality, in contrast to the painfully phony sexuality of fundamentalism, and in contrast to the dehumanized sexuality of our society.

I did not find the book humorous, I certainly did not laugh out loud as I was supposed to according to the reviews. I grew up in a missionary family and the scenes were all too familiar. I found the story poignant.
