Find the perfect pairs and you're there...........2007-09-01

As a trader, I found the book gave a good overview on "Pairs Trading", but many of the examples, including the "Trading Diary" on Chapter 22 provided little inspiration to someone looking to make sizeable profits out of pairs trades. For example in Chapter 22, titled the "Trading Diary", after just 30 business days (41 days) the model trade in the book yielded a return of just 1.04%.

Indeed, the basic premise behind the pairs trade, forgetting all the fancy statistics I found is to simply to look at the chart and see if it's tradeable (i.e has it got a range-bound movement!!!). The secret is to find the charts. To accompany this book you really need some good pairs trading software to find these charts. There's limited providers but I'm going to try http://www.pairstrade.com.

Ideal Book for Pairs Trading.......2007-03-16

I strongly suggest to anyone who is interested in the Wall Street strategy known as "Pairs Trading" to read this book. It is extremely well-written and easy to follow. It also provides clear, step-by-step instructions on how to build and implement your own pairs trade. Overall, I could not be happier with my purchase and I recommend this book to all. Thank you.

Practical.......2007-01-05

I work in finance and have read a number of books on the topic, I did recently purchase a copy of 'trading pairs'. I havn't finished reading it yet, but I can understand it is a little hard to follow but either way it does target the correct people.

I myself am not a math genius so the simplicity works with me, for hardcore quants this book will leave you fairly unsatisfied, though for everyone else it would be more practical.

If you are new to the concept of trading pairs, like I was, this book really gives you a strong foundation of knowledge to build on. Like any advanced trading strategy, it certainly takes a commitment on your part to really understand the technique thoroughly, but in the end - it's worth it.

An Unheralded Gem.......2006-08-22

I had the occasion last weekend to find a copy of Trading Pairs buried deep in a local bookstore. I was browsing the finance section and have an interest in Hedge Trading. When I saw the title, I immediately picked it up.

What a find! This is an excellent primer for hedge-trading - it lays out the groundwork for novices who may be thinking about Hedge Trading. And then helps the reader use that new knowledge to gain a first-hand, practical, and easy to put into play knowledge of pairs trading arbitrage.

I bought it on the spot, and poured through it that night. To my surprise, the book also went into a fairly deep discussion of more sophisticated trades. Not that a lot of people ask me about hedge trading, or trading pairs, but now, if they do, I'm pointing them out to Whistler's excellent book.

A great book.......2005-12-14

This book was suggested to me by my University as part of the Histology curriculum of the General Med. program. It took me quite a while to understand that this is probably the best histology book there is, and I have 3 other books to prove it..

Some may find it diffucult to digest at the beginning, the middle and the end, like I had, but now I understand that Histology as a subject is hard and nothing more.
For a medical student there are other books out there, may be more consice and with more graphics, but if you want to excell in your Histo class, this is the book. Ross doesnt neglect anything! I found the illustrations sufficient and accompanied by short summaries of what was already mentioned and not mentioned in the text. They were exellent as a review of the material.
For those who find the graphics insufficient I would suggest buying an Atlas.

Good Text, Needs more diagrams.......2004-06-27

This is a good histology text to read and understand. It has not only structural descriptions, but has related physiology and this makes the book interesting to read. With mastering histology in the first year of the medical school, pathology would be easy to learn in the future. This book makes histology a more interesting subject.
Advantages:
1.Lucid style in writing
2.Sentence type headings makes the essence of the following text very clear.
3.Most of the details that you need in the histology course could be found in this single volume.
4.Atlas is separately included in the end of every chapter other than the regular diagrams between the texts.
Disadvantages:
1.Lack of line diagrams- without a good number of line diagrams it would be difficult to grasp the material for a normal student like me.
2.No clear chapter outline in the beginning of each chapter. The Wheater's histology has an edge over this in this aspect.

I really felt that this text could have given a little more. You will need to buy an atlas to supplement the text, but I do like the explanations given with the pictures.

Excellent book for my medical histology class.......2003-08-29

I found this book very helpful and packed with good info on histology. This book is quite thorough and is essential for any medical student taking a class in histology. The pictures are quite helpful because it was easier to identify simple epithelia verses squamous epithelia as one example. If you want a great study guide for the type of questions teachers ask get the following: Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN; 0971999686)
The last book helped me to focus on the type of questions asked on my exams. I was recommended this book from a few friends who have already taken the class. They said it helped them get good grades. I guess they were right. With the help of these two books I did wonderfully.

Very good.......2003-01-27

I liked the book very much for it has Histology with some Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology included. Of course these text takes space from the book and reduces the amount of slides but each slide is given similar information and not just identification. Time to time comparative information. I found this book very useful when compared to simple Histology Atlases.You may need another Histology Atlas for more pictures if you are interested but this book is very simple and to the point all encompassing

The much awaited new edition of this book should be out by the summer of 2007. The old edition's taxonomy has gotten rather dated. This new edition will be a must for serious marine biologists who want to identify California's wonderfully diverse marine invertebrate fauna.

Great information, a must have for the west coast naturalist.......2000-05-04

Even though the latest edition was published in 1975, Light's manual is still a "must have" for the west coast naturalist. This book contains taxonomic keys and information about the majority of intertidal invertebrate animals that live along the California Coast.

The keys have supplementary illustrations that help the reader figure out what animal is in their bucket, or in the tide pool at their feet.

There are entries that are unavoidably out of date due to the publication date. The reliability and usefulness of the taxonomic keys and supporting information in this book, however, still ring true.

A wonderful reference book to the invertebrates of California.

The only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars was that its publication year (1975) is causing its contents to slip out of date.

Transboundary transport of air pollution has been a topic of scientific research for several decades and has also been addressed already by environmental policies. However, the importance of air pollution transport on the largest - intercontinental - scales, has been recognized only recently. It was soon found that the meteorological and chemical processes involved in intercontinental pollution transport are distinctly different from those occurring during regional-scale transport, and thus new scientific methodologies are required for their study. In this book, leading scientists review the current state of knowledge in this emerging field of research, providing the reader with a process understanding of global-scale transport and its influence on the atmosphere's chemical composition. Long-range transport of anthropogenic pollution is contrasted with that of pollution produced by natural processes such as dust storms or forest fires. Furthermore, the prospects for international management of intercontinental transport of anthropogenic pollution are discussed.

This volume of the Handbook is the first of a two-volume set of reviews devoted to the rare-earth-based high-temperature oxide superconductors (commonly known as hiT C superconductors). The history of hiT C superconductors is a few months short of being 14 years old when Bednorz and Müller published their results which showed that (La,BA) 2CuO 4 had a superconducting transition of ~30 K, which was about 7K higher than any other known superconducting material. Within a year the upper temperature limit was raised to nearly 100K with the discovery of an ~90K superconducting transition in YBa 2Cu 3O 7 - &dgr;. The announcement of a superconductor with a transition temperature higher than the boiling point of liquid nitrogen set-off a frenzy of research on trying to find other oxide hiT C superconductors. Within a few months the maximum superconducting transition reached 110 K (Bi 2Sr 2Ca 2Cu 30 10, and then 122K (TlBa 2Ca 3Cu 4O 11. It took several years to push T C up another 11 K to 133 K with the discovery of superconductivity in HgBa 2Ca 2Cu 3O 8, which is still the record holder today.

Get from the library.......2006-10-23

I didn't abide my own rules. I bought this book at a used book store for a couple of bucks and it was STILL TOO MUCH! I read it during the summer and could predict what was going to happen before it started. For a first novel it was typical. I really couldn't get into the characters. I didn't like either one of them at all. They both had horrible personalities. I felt at though Ms. DeMarco based her characters on real people. Did anyone else think Paul Newman?

An entertaining, fluffy read.......2004-06-21

Go ahead -- get The Difference from the library before heading to the beach; there are enough amusing scenes scattered throughout the 325 pages to justify spending a few hours in DeMarco's Hollywood. The book's greatest strength lies in its veracity; I came away with no doubt in my mind that DeMarco has lived the life she describes.

However, while DeMarco shines at plot development, she stumbles over character development. She begins the book with a page summarizing the Carla's and Josie's backstories, effectively communicating to her readers that she cannot be bothered with the traditional ways in which authors tell their readers about their characters; this initial impression is abundantly supported by reading the rest of the book. I frequently had to leaf back a few pages to remind myself who was who, and why I cared.

As is to be expected from 99% of the books I read, errors in grammar and diction abound. I won't bore you with them (I've already forwarded them to the publisher) except to say, can one really *pry* one's clothes *on*? I can see someone dressed in armor prying his/her clothes off, but on? Impossible!

As I've also come to expect, this book would have benefited from being left to simmer until the author came up with ending. The "where are they now" wrap-up in chapter 37, like the 1-page character introduction, screams "I can't be bothered to develop these aspects of the narrative; here are my rough notes." The O. Henry twist in chapter 39 smacks of desperation.

In summary, The Difference was satisfying enough that I will read DeMarco's first novel and keep an eye out for any future efforts, but it wasn't good enough to recommend to my book group.

The Difference Between Good and Bad Fiction.......2004-03-16

Ugh. This book is confusing and boring. It has unbelievable characters and weird situations. I can usually read a good 400-page book in 3 or 4 days. This book is slightly more than 300 pages and I've been working on it for almost 2 weeks now. I dread reading. But, I always finish a book, hoping there will be a redeeming quality at the end. Not the case with this book.

Much like Carol Wolper's Cigarette Girl and Secret Celebrity, I think the Hollywood mystique the authors are going for are lost. The whole world does NOT revolve around Hollywood, and some people can even get ahead in live without "glomming." Guess I should learn my lesson and stay away from Hollywood fiction.

I was considering reading Cranberry Queen, too, but The Difference has turned me off from Kathleen DeMarco. She'll have to prove herself for me to pick up another of her books.

Funny, truthful, and a great peek into the Hollywood scene. By the way...this book has absolutely the best ending of any book I have ever read. Blindsided me!!

Surprising and fun.......2003-12-09

I've read both DeMarco's books, and while I thought her first was good, this one blew me away. I love that she doesn't write about romance, and instead is writing about women in business, good or bad. The Hollywood part was an extra bonus. She's got a good style. What I really like is that both books were so different. It makes me wonder what her third one will be like! She has a fan in me, and my book group (for that matter).
