His argument is well-founded and very important. Book Description

Intercropping is an area of research for which there is a desperate need, both in developing countries where people are rapidly depleting scarce resources and still starving, and in developed countries, where more ecologically and economically sound ways of feeding ourselves must be developed. The only published guidelines for conducting such research and analyzing the data have been scattered about in various journal articles, many of which are hard to find. This book condenses these methods and will be immensely valuable to agricultural researchers and to the statisticians who help them design their experiments and interpret their results.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars provides guidance for intercropping with three crops or more.......2002-04-09

In this volume Federer provides a variety of statistical designs for intercropping experiments when three or more crops are involved. He describes a variety of different situations and provides specialized solutions. Topics include: (1) constant densities (Chapter 13) , (2) varying densities (Chapter 14), (3) effects of mixing when individual cultivar responses are available (Chapter 15), (4) mixtures when individual responses are not available (Chapter 16)and more. This is the second volume of a text on intercropping experiments and anyone with enough interest to read volume II should certainly get volume I as well. It is well-written, well-researched and presented by an expert in the field of design of agricultural experiments.

This book presents better ways to maximize the information one gets from an intercropping experiment. As the author states the difficulties with three or more crops is an order of magnitude greater than with only two crops. Nevertheless such experiments are common and in today's computing environment the difficulties can be overcome. Due to the algebraic complexity Federer used symbolic computing through tools such as GAUSS, MATHEMATICA and MAPLE to obtain trustworthy results.

Federer has prepared a bibliography of over 3000 references which is so large that it is not included in the text volumes. It can be obtained by going to his university web site or in hard copy or ordered on diskette This is discussed in Chapter 20. The text does contain many other references including research articles and related books in the literature cited sections of the various chapters.

For those who works with termites, this book cames just in time because little was done until now to make a synthesis of the knowledge about termites, with an exception of Grasse book, in French language. Although it comprises only some aspects, I hope that this book make another termitologists write your results and publish them in a compendium like that.

                Book Description

Transport phenomena in plasmas are the relatively slow processes of particle momentum and energy transport systems in a state of mechanical equilibrium. In contrast to neutral gases, these phenomena in plasmas are greatly influenced by self-consistent fields, in particular electric fields. These can produce particle and energy fluxes, in addition to those generated by the inhomogeneity of the plasma composition and temperature. As a result, the physical effects accompanying transport phenomena in plasmas are far more numerous and complicated than those in neutral gases, and the solution of corresponding problems is more difficult. The effects, however, are usually far more interesting and sometimes surprising. This book presents a systematic survey and analysis of the main mechanisms of transport phenomena in plasma and gives examples of gradually increasing complexity to illustrate these mechanisms and the relationships between them. The author pays special attention to the analysis of experimental measurements and considers the relevant processes analytically as well as qualitatively. The majority of problems dealt with in this book are of considerable practical interest, and the phenomena described often determine the main characteristics of processes and devices. Transport Phenomena in Partially Ionized Plasma will be of interest to researchers who need to know the properties of real, specific systems, as well as to engineers and advanced students in the physics of plasmas, semiconductors, various types of gas discharges and the ionosphere.

                5 out of 5 stars Evolution's twisted path.......2000-05-04

Besides being a parody of the then-popular academic books telling about wondrous animals from far-off places, Snouters is also a wonderful read. It describes the species of the entirely fictional order of mammals, Rhinogradentia (also known as the Snouters), found only in the Hi-Yay Islands, the distinguishing trait being a remarkably adapted nose. The author follows the projected evolution of the order from the early representatives, whose snout is merely an elongated bill-shaped appendage aiding the animal's rolling method of propulsion, to the most extreme and elaborate species with fully-articulated noses used in a variety of methods of locomotion - springing, sessility, and, in one case, gliding. This excellent study is an amazing read even for the non-biologist. It is also quite useful in portrayal of evolution and adaptation to the surroundings. Vehemently recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fanciful adaptations with a suggestion for class use........1997-05-02

The Snouters-Form and Life of the Rhinogrades by Harald Stumpke is a wonderful little book that shows fanciful adaptations of the snout of the Rhinogrades. Each species is carefully described and illustrated. This could be used in a highschool biology class. Students could read about a Rhinograde and then add their own creations
