Good intro but that is it.......2007-08-03
This is a good intro to give the basics of valuation for "old economy" businesses. It determines the valuation of companies based almost exclusively on their cash flow over the previous few years to the analysis. Unfortunately it ignores too many issues that play an extremely important role in valuation. For example, the quality, background, knowledge of management, the products the company manufactures, the markets for these products, macroeconomic conditions, intellectual property, market position (i.e., oligopolistic? Is entry/exit difficult in the industry?). Not one of these issues is even touched upon!!! The authors seem to be implying that these issues are irrelevant!! Only the cash flow over the previous few years applied forward (i.e., discounted for present value) matters according to the book!!! Perhaps this type of mentality explains why the overwhelming majority of mergers and acquistions fail!!!!
Nothing spectacular.......2006-04-03
Unfortunately, for all the name brand that this book conveys, I think the cover seems to be the most intriguing part. There are much better ways for book peddling and the fact that a firm such as McKinsey allowed their name on the title of a book for the sake of a few sales, boggles this readers mind. The subject matter seems to be along the lines of the bull session with all bull and no session. No actual quantitative analysis is used throughout the book, and if anything more than an encyclopedic definition is learned from this book, I would be astounded. Save some money and go search online for some basic books on beginning valuation. By the way, those giving 5 stars either can't read English very well or are shills for McKinsey.
Waste of Time.......2005-04-12
Any book by Damodaran is far better for business managers and portfolio managers.
For portfolio managers, estimating the cash-flows is a small part of the valuation process, the easiest. As the financial field and practice is becoming more and more quantitative, the cutting edge of asset pricing is to estimate time-varying risk premiums. Actually, almost 90% of variation in stock prices come from risk shifts, not from news on company cash-flows.
If you are interested in asset pricing i would suggest a mix of damodaran (20%) and "Asset Pricing" by John Cochrane (80%).
Good but bad Excel support.......2004-01-29
I liked this book. In Russia it is one of the most popular books on valuatuion. But when I can get the perfect excel support for Investment Valuation by Aswath Damodaran or good web support for Valuation Methods and Shareholder Value Creation by Pablo Fernandez, I ask the authors, why don't they put supporting material in disk? I think that the price of their sowtware ($94.50) is too high compairing with the book ($56 with discount), because there is no supporting materials - only 1 spreadsheet (from my point of view does not conform to McKinsey, as the leader of consulting business). I hope, for the 4-th edition we will have a good excel support.
User-unfriendliness at its best.......2003-01-11
Hmm I wonder if those giving this book five stars actually work for McKinsey. As a practioner, I don't know anyone in the industry who has actually read this book. It looks impressive on the bookshelf, but the content is anything but impressive. A lot of topics are covered, but each one only superficially and the writing is extremely dry and boring. I actually found reading this volume *painful*, and I'm supposed to like this stuff since I do it for a living! My advice for any potential buyer is read a few chapters first before you shell out for it.

Very good book. Very helpful........2005-04-08
Dr. Dressler did an excellent job in editing this book about the chemical dynamics in extreme environments, covering the areas of this subject in both theories and experiments. The chapters are written by some of the leading experts in the field, and together they will be of great interest to experts and newcomers, both of whom will benefit from the in-depth discussions of the latest models, methods and results. The whole book is informative and organized. 5 stars.

ASIN: 078671574X |
Book Description
Mike Ashley is back with an all-new edition of one of the bestselling Mammoth Books ever, from the funniest writers in the field, including Neil Gaiman, Tom Holt, and Terry Jones. The thirty- five off-the-wall comic fantasies featured in Ashley’s new collection are a mix of specially written stories and hard-to-find gems: a computer salesman in fairyland, a vampire football match, a psychotic Father Christmas, and a wizard allergic to magic. Ashley expertly turns fantasy and horror fiction on its head and magic into mayhem. This is huge fun for all comic fantasy fans.

Book Description
With the hilarious "Happy Valley," a story originally written by John Cleese and Connie Booth for Monty Python's Flying Circus, this third volume in an extraordinarily popular Mammoth Book series gets off to a suitably silly start. It continues merrily apace with "Attack of the Charlie Chaplins" by Garry Kilworth, visits "The Strawhouse Pavilion" by Ron Goulart, and takes in "A Bad Day on Mount Olympus" with Marilyn Todd. Along the way it introduces Esther Eisner's "Gunsel and Gretel" and Cherith Baldry's "Broadway Barbarian" and renews acquaintance with F. Anstey's "Ferdie." It bemuses as well as amuses with "A Case of Four Fingers" concocted by John Grant, not to mention "The Absolute and Utter Impossibility of the Facts in the Case of the Vanishing of Henning Vok" from Jack Adrian. And before this wildly comic romp ends, it discovers "Math Takes a Holiday" (Paul Di Filippo) and "Mother Duck Strikes Again" (Craig Shaw Gardner). Fantasy finds broad definition in this wackily comic tour. While some of the stories approach the domain of science fiction, others are lodged in an everyday reality. None of them, though, fails to entertain. Together, the more than thirty selections -- thirteen of them brand-new and the balance of them often rare finds or forgotten gems -- provide a fresh sampling of comic genius in the sphere of fantasy fiction and a wide range of tales to suit every taste in humor.

Wonder? Breed? How Foul is your Seed??.......2006-01-05
What to expect from "The Mammoth Book of Awesome Comic Fantasy"--a mosaic of waggish rogues and wayward wizards, misinformed planet-skippers, and would-be assassins in the grain...and from the skies. I recommend reading the book starting with the hyperactive final tale, "You'll Never Walk Alone Again"; its frenetic rhythm demands your perception be sharply angled! "Put Down that Universe!" is the second-to-last tale and features characters equally extraordinary and intriguing. Other meritorious additions: "Dragonet", "Nothing in the Rules", "How Much Would You Pay?","Math Takes a Holiday", "Polly Put the Mockers On", and "The Absolute and Utter Impossibility of the Facts in the Case of the Vanishing of Henning Vok"...On the flip side, skip "Ferdie", "Milord Sir Smiht...", "Touched By a Salesman", "The Swords and the Stones", "Fair Weather Fiend" and "Mother Duck Strikes Again". TEDIOUS!! Overall, great book...
A refreshing, laugh out loud book..........2003-01-05
Genuinely humorous books just don't pop up like they used to, so it's a breath of fresh air to finally find one that does it all right. Instead of overwhelming you with a novel claiming to be funny, but only supported by spots of humor tossed in at random, few and far between, intervals, this book simply tosses you a wide range of diverse, yet equally hilarious stories to read as you please. A perfect book for the most casual up to most die hard reader of both humor as well as fantasy. Doused in clever, quick witted humor ranging from dark to bold; this book is perfect whenever you need a good laugh!
One more in a series of ... books.......2001-08-04
What is with these British anthologizers? How perverse a talent it is to find short, comedic stories which are not funny. Sweet merciful heavens this guy found a John Cleese story that was tedious. Imagine how hard you must work to find a tedious John Cleese anything. At least in this volume you can tell that most of the authors were trying to be at least a little funny.
Book Description
Brand-new stories and comic classics fill the 500-plus pages of the sequel to the popular Mammoth Book of Comic Fantasy.
Bungee-jumping demons, mad Magi, seafaring aliens, and a tricky wizard who leaks to the press populate this new collection of magic and mayhem from fantasy's funniest, wackiest writers, among them Harlan Ellison, Ambrose Bierce, Neil Gaiman, Craig Shaw Gardner, Harry Harrison, Tom Holt, and many more. Here are the madcap fantasies of "The Case of the Four-and-Twenty Blackbirds," "A Slow Day in Hell," "The Case of Jack the Clipper," "The Shoemaker and the Elvis," and other tales to delight, amuse, and, confuse fantasy fans.

Juxtaposition Rank: Utter Despair in the Semi-Literate P.M........2006-05-28
A puzzled demeanor paves the road towards less-than-ebullient dissatisfaction. I don't care if the reader of this review spends his/her money on DVD collections of "Desperate Housewives", "Grey's Anatomy" or "Joey"--the lot shall be cast into the foul breath with mechanical precision when the red bulb becomes illuminated--but I must protest the curiousity flittering around Mike Ashley's compilations. This collection isn't appropriately creative to be deemed as absurd. I'm an eccentric fellow who cannot condone a bowl of cereal unless the contents of the bowl are a mixture of disparate palates, so I can appreciate a guffaw (why not?? lately, the comparisons being proclaimed by the spawn of pacers balancing my outrageously, outlandish supervillainous hyena exhalation and the trademarked sociopathic titter of Batman's #1 [self-proclaimed] foe have begged examination). However, this book belongs in the dungheap. Perhaps my meager scope of comprehension prohibits me from a total self-elucidation of the rationale behind publishing such a pestiferous tooth-stainer of literature, but I shall rest comfortably knowing that the book shall be fettered to the shelves collecting not accolades, but DUST.
By the by, homewreckers, scroll down my list of reviews and you shall acknowledge that less than a year ago another Mike Ashley compilation was criticized very favorably. Yes...obviously, the missing piece of this diabolical sphinx shall be enshrouded eternally...
Giggles and guffaws.......2000-05-12
I love comic fantasy, so was looking forward to this collection very much. I was *not* disappointed! From 'Neander-tale' (why not to make fun of the weird guy) to 'The Outpost Undiscovered By Tourists' (a new twist on the three kings), you'll enjoy yourself tremendously. Good for many hours of grins and giggles...

When I received this book ("Seriously Comic Fantasy"), I thought the stories looked familiar. They are. The contents are IDENTICAL with my copy of "Mammoth Book of Comic Fantasy II". The difference is that CFII was published by Carroll & Graf in NY, while Seriously Comic Fantasy was published two years later by Constable Publishers in London with the same cover but different title.
If you already have CFII, be warned!!!

Some great stories, some terrible... most in-between.......2006-04-15
This is one of the many, many volumes in Carroll & Graf's "Mammoth" series of short fiction compendiums. (Other volumes have held mysteries, vampire stories, Sherlock Holmes stories and many, many other subjects.) Basically, it's 500 pages of comedic fantasy, sci-fi and horror tales, and as you would have to expect with a book of this sort, the quality varies wildly. Some -- such as Tom Holt's "Pizza To Go," Neil Gaiman's "Shoggoth's Old Peculiar" and R.A. Lafferty's "Been a Long, Long Time" are fantastic reads. Others are almost painful in their lack of humor. Most fall somewhere in that gray area in-between. As someone who likes reading anthologies in the hopes of finding new authors, it was worth a read for me, and I've already read one of the three sequels (The Mammoth Book of Comic Fantasy II). I intend to pick up the other two (The Mammoth Book of Awesome Comic Fantasy and The Mammoth Book of New Comic Fantasy) as well -- I expect those, like the other two, will vary in quality, but to me it's worth slagging through some of the boring stories to find the gems.
Dirt Bunko, The Imprisoned Pigeon that Ate a C-Note and Pooped Out Two Bits.......2006-01-11
MISSED!!! One good story...the last one. Isn't that typical? The stories don't hold you and the yawns will paralyze your jaw. WORK YER NECK MUSCLES 'CUZ YOU'LL BE A-SHAKIN' YOUR SKULL "WHY GOD WHY" IF YA READ THIS BOOK!!! Ashley, you schmuck.
Two or three good stories can't save this book..........2001-02-09
I love Fantasy. I love Comedy. I saw this and thought "This is the book for me!"
No.
A couple of bright spots (Neil Gaiman's and Terry Pratchett's stories, both of which I believe are available elsewhere) aren't quite enough to save this wheezing collection. Many of the stories aren't particularly funny at all, they just aren't serious High Fantasy. Others are just groaningly bad. Reading the first story, "Peregrine: Alflandia" by Avram Davidson, made me feel like I was trapped next to a particularly stupid and obnoxious person on a plane. Maybe that was the "funny" part, but if so that's the kind of comedy I can live without. Most of the rest of the stories were better, but too many are better by too little.
Maybe the editor's sense of humor is just much different from mine, but something tells me that that is probably not so. I'll say it just in case I've missed something that's readily apparent to everyone but me, though. I personally would stay away from this one.
A good, long collection, but nothing outstanding........1998-10-05
Upon seeing this in a bookstore my reaction was "hmm... this looks pretty damn good", and upon seeing it contained a Pratchett short (one I already have admitedly) I thought 'hmm... couldn't be too bad' and purchased it. I had pretty high expectations and to be honest it didn't meet them- but I did still like the collection. I wouldn't really describe this personally as a humourous collection- there were *very* few 'laugh out loud' moments. I would however describe it as a comical collection. Depending on your tastes you might enjoy it better than I- but personally I think as a humourous collection it fails, but just as an interesting anthology with a sense of the comical it was a decent read- there were very few stories that were actually outstanding, but even less that were below par- it just kind of skims along.
