Most clients understandably find planning concepts and strategies confusing, but most also have a fairly sound understanding of who and what is most important to them. These are the priorities from which to build the foundation of a successful estate plan. The seven principles explored in this book use personal values as a basis to form The Legacy Planning System
TM. With this approach, advisors can:
- Help clients discover and solidify their deepest values, convictions, and objectives relative to their money
- Help clients express those values and objectives in a clearly written Family Financial Philosophy mission statement
- Serve as the team leader in advising clients and clients other advisors on how to use the mission statement to direct the planning process
UL>
Clarifying your clients priorities and personal goals will enable you, as a trusted advisor, to simplify the planning process for clients, ensure their lifetime financial independence, and help them control their ultimate family and social capital legacies. Confronting issues of family dynamics, taxes, and financial situationsnot to mention accepting ones own mortalityis difficult for many people. In addition, since estate planning often requires a shift in ownership of assets, clients feel an unsettling loss of privacy and control over their financial resources. Help your clients to overcome these obstacles and achieve their highest financial and philanthropic aspirations. Theyll thank you for generations to come.

Honoring Your Values via Gifts and Bequests.......2000-06-01
Many estate planners fail to adequately understand a client's personal values and priorities and merely plug into a standardized will and trust setup. This book provides a systematic method for analyzing and implementing needs for personal financial security, gifts to family, and charitable giving. The audience for the book is clearly professional financial planners, but wealthy individuals will find the author's approach helpful.

Invaluable Reference Guide for Human Resources Personnel.......2005-07-30
Human Resource managers and specialists have a lot of legal material to learn. They have to keep up with the latest changes in the laws that affect the way they handle employees and the way they administer benefits. This guide, updated each year since its initial release, is designed to help human resource personnel find the answers to legal questions.
The most striking feature of this guide is its length. It is more than 1,100 pages long and contains 43 chapters. It needs to be this way, of course, to encompass all of the different laws pertaining to human resource management. It covers most everything about HR one can imagine, from rules and regulations regarding hiring and terminating to laws covering sexual harassment and pension administration.
Even though this book is a very good resource, there are still a few things you will not be able to find. The primary function of this reference guide is to provide an overview of the federal laws. Thus, many of the laws unique to the individual states are not discussed here. There are a few exceptions, but there are many state- specific questions this guide will not be able to answer. This is what happened to me one day when I consulted this book for an answer regarding workmen's compensation. It didn't have what I needed to know about my state, so I had to look elsewhere. Still, it pointed me in the right direction so it did have its use.
The organization of this book is ok, but some things about it are a little cumbersome. The table of contents, for example, doesn't include page numbers. Instead, it references the various pages based on the chapter number and the subsection (for example, "23.02" means turn to chapter 23, and then look for the second section). I think it would be better if it showed the page number.
There are plenty of references in this guide to specific court cases, pointing out new decisions and how they were decided. Human Resource laws change all the time, which is why a book like this becomes outdated quickly. Fortunately, the author of this handy guide updates it every year with a new release. It's a large, bulky book that may not be organized in the most efficient way, but is still invaluable as reference guide for HR personnel.
Rabbi Trust.......2003-07-10
Your a teacher and don't know what a Rabbi Trust is? Shame on you. Look it up and learn it and stop thinking everyone is Anti-Semitic. As a Jewish man I take offense to your comment.
Shilling's Text is Jam Packed.......1998-09-16
I am using this book for a master's level personnel law course. It covers all the topics quite thoroughly. It might be useful as a quick selective reference tool for HR administrators unfamiliar with one or more of the specialty areas. Some chapters (such as the one on benefits and the one on pensions) might benefit from another look at organization of the material. However, most of the information is accurate, if necessarily streamlined in many areas. Since personnel law now covers several deeply specialized areas, this is not surprising.
Stylistically, the book's sentences are jam-packed with information. This might prove difficult reading for some. In a few cases, a series of issues will be "hidden" by a single sentence that is oversimplified, but this is apparent only to a reader who is familiar with the field. The advantage is that the author has made a very creditable attempt to address all the issues. The author generally avoids drawing temporal or one-sided conclusions, which may mislead in a field that is fraught with disputes. I appreciate the even-handedness of this approach.
One small but annoying detail. On page 220 is a reference to a "rabbi trust". I took offense at the use of this term in the book, without quotation marks. I think later editions should avoid or explain the use of language which is apparently bigoted. In fact, I will recommend that my students not use this term because I can offer no good explanation for its continuance.

Customer Reviews:
An opus work on the operation and application of sensors.......2006-06-21
This unwieldy tome is a great book on just about every kind of sensor you could think of. It is an edited work, and consists of over 100 chapters/articles written by different groups of individuals. In spite of that, the book has a good logical flow.
Part one is on measurement and instrumentation in general. It discusses the desirable characteristics, operational modes, accuracy, and standards of instrumentation in general.
The next ten sections discuss specific classes of sensors, their operation, applicable mathematical equations, and typical configuration/circuits needed for their use. The sensors are broken down into those that measure spatial variables, time and frequency, solid mechanical variables, fluid mechanical variables, thermal mechanical variables, electromagnetic variables, optical variables, radiation, chemical variables, and finally biomedical variables. It would probably be very difficult for any one person to understand all of these sections, as specific sections require a basic knowledge of specific disciplines, but the language is very accessible and the content very interesting. Each article contains an extensive bibliography and list of reference articles where more information can be obtained.
The next section is about signal processing. This covers everything from A/D conversion to the mathematics of analog and digital signal processing. There are plenty of circuits shown and even some worked out examples on how to design filters with certain given characteristics. This is very accessible to anyone with a background in signals and systems.
Next is a less mentally taxing section on displays. There is some history of each device, theory of operation, and advice on the most suitable environment for each type of display device, as well as interfacing information.
The final section is a brief one on control. This section seemed rather rushed and really didn't do a very good job of explaining control systems compared to the high quality of the rest of the book.
Of all the books I've owned or read on the subject of sensors, this one has the best combination of device physics, theory of operation, application circuitry, signal processing, and applicable mathematics. I highly recommend this book to any scientist who needs to learn about specific sensors and anything related to their operation, control, and possible interfaces.
Magnificent collection of material.......2000-03-25
This book is one of the best book covering measurement and sensors. The book cover almost any sensor you think of, describe it function (the background physics) and then explain how it work with some application in software. This book must have for any one working with sensor (engineers, physicist...). the book start explaining it material assuming no prior knowledge for the reader which make it much easier and easy to follow up, start from simple point to explain and then get more complicated with mathematics applied for that particular sensor. I have a degree on physics and I believe this book is a good reference even in physics and I enjoy this book so much. It is a lot fun to read for professional or even for any reader. Any time I was searching for more information about specific sensor this book never turn me down. In short it's one of the greatest book I bought and I don't mind paying its price because it worth every penny.

Hilarious!.......2005-03-14
I picked this book up at a liquidation sale at a used book store mainly because I liked the title and not knowing anything about the author. This was my first reading of Patrick McManus and now I just have to read more of his works. My better half was trying to watch TV while I was reading this and I kept interrupting by reading sections of the book. His comment was "I can relate to that." I got to the point where I couldn't read any more until I wiped my eyes. This is a must-read for anyone who needs a good laugh.
'Pass out laughing' funny.......2005-01-09
I have always thought that Patrick McManus is the funniest writer on the planet. I read his stories when I need to laugh or relax. Sometimes I irritate my wife by reading it in bed. I try not to laugh out loud, but I only succeed in sounding like I am trying to muffle continuous sneezes.
However, not everyone gets it. I have been shocked by watching people read McManus without so much as a smile (though most start snorting like wild pigs on acid) . My only guess is that getting McManus requires a couple things. First, it requires some understanding of his experiences. He absolutely nails all of the stupid things 'outdoors men (outdoors people)' do and think, but don't want anybody to know about. Second, you have to see the self-deprecating aspect of his humor. Third, you can't look for great literature in integrated books. Patrick McManus is an excellent writer, if you see these as independent stories simply collected in a volume. They are meant for adults who want to laugh at themselves. So, If you are willing to or already meet the above three criteria, you will love this book.
By the way, I am a professor of clinical psychology and (other than worrying a little about McManus) I sometimes recommend this and other McManus books. I do this with people who have racing thoughts and anxiety at bedtime, and when I believe they have the necessary experiences to find it funny. It often works quite well. I think of his stories as little pieces of happiness. (Oh, that even makes me sick to hear. Sorry)
Strange Encounters of the Bird Kind.......2003-01-22
The title of these comments is from one of the tales in this third collection of short stories I have read by Mr. Patrick F. McManus. The author has been writing the yarns and his versions of his childhood "true" stories for decades, and has now produced 12 collections of these essays in book form. Many of the stories are about being outdoors and failing miserably as a hunter and fisherman, but one gets the impression that to the extent he fails, he does with seeming intent. It's the outdoors he loves, not harming it or its inhabitants. When he does speak of a successful outing with his friends he complains so much about the "success" that again you can tell coming home empty handed is his real goal. A collection of stories is what he is after.
The best stories here range from his childhood when speaking of why an 8 year old is perfectly competent to own his first knife, while even one day short of the 8th anniversary would be nothing less than a felony were a knife to be given to such an infant. He goes on at length as to how men delude themselves in to their thinking they have convinced their wives how their gun collections multiply without a single purchase. And in a story entitled, "A Hunker Is Not A Squat", he explains how with the correct posture, a stick and a dirt floor, The United Nations would be unnecessary, and world conflicts would end.
Mr. McManus writes for everyone who enjoys a good laugh, uncontrived humor, and just simple observations about human nature. He does not preach about the solutions to world problems, claim a cure for the common cold, or how to get rich. He just gives the reader the gift of laughter, an invaluable gift.
A Delight!.......2000-05-23
A book filled with humorous stories, this compilation of experiences was a treat to read! The Grasshopper Trap is only the second book I've read by Patrick McManus but now I want to track down all of his stories. McManus writes humor without the obscene, offensive language that seems so common everywhere these days. It's a refreshing, fun read with stories that entertain as well as remind us of a simpler, less frantic way of life.
If you don't like laughing, DON'T READ THIS BOOK!.......1999-11-20
This is just one of those books that's great when, well, anytime
