Comes Up Short.......2006-08-02

Sadly, this book is similar to most on venture capital in that it is based on interviews of VCs. The weakness behind this approach is that it provides unorganized content that lacks depth and utility. In short, while it doesprovide some important insight, these insights are neither unique or critical and can be found in other books that provide a much better resource to the entrepreneur.

Excellent Resource for the Investments of the Future.......2002-01-28

Exchange-Traded-Funds ("Basket Securities")are fast becoming the most important and popular investments in the world. And for good reason. As the authors point out, they offer superior performance to most mutual funds at a tiny fraction of the cost, offer tax advantages in the form of low capital gains distributions, and exposure to over 100 different market indicies. The authors offer a "Holy Grail" strategy of swapping between active and passive management, and a primer on point and figure analysis to boot. Don't look for precise, technical timing formulas, but rather get this book as your definitive reference on ETFs.

Worst investment book I've ever seen.......2002-01-16

I can't believe this 260 page book has appendices that start on page 117!! Over half of this book is lists of stocks included in the ETF's...easily obtainable on the web. We didn't need to kill trees for this! I thought the author would discuss sector swapping strategies, etc. , but not in this book. This book just contains some basic information about ETF's in today's market.

Newly appointed resident chef of the Richfield Ladies' Club in Connecticut, Sterling Lung ignores his well-coifed employers' urgings that he cook Chinese food for them. His father, on the other hand, who wanted Sterling to become a doctor, takes his revenge by never allowing his son to cook for him. Aging and unwell, he nurses a bittersweet anger at having raised a child who knows almost nothing about his family's culture, who speaks little Chinese, and who prides himself on his ignorance of Chinese cooking. On the one occasion Sterling is allowed to cook in her kitchen, his mother scowls over his shoulder, criticizing every move. "You call yourself a chef?" she prods him.

"Didn't they teach you anything at that school?" She clucks her tongue and goes to the refrigerators and returns with a bottle. "Oyster sauce is always good." Witty and Self-Indulging.......2007-01-10

This is a book I lovingly hold on to and relish over during impromptu dinners in my college dorm. Louie's story is quite the relief from generic Asian American nonfictions. Less academic and more romantic, it gives vigor and life to the interchanging passion and lovelessness that plaster Chinese lifestyle and interaction.

That said, Louie's piece is his own. One can intellectualize the Chinese male's femininity, inter-cultural skirmishes, and traditional values portrayed in the book, but in reality, it's just a really good story. The prose is exemplary, the plot is seductive, and the narrator is as human as it gets.

Don't pass this book up!

David Wong Louie has written an exceptionally fine novel about our misconceptions of love and the willful ignorance we wear like armor against knowledge that can and will hurt us.

I won't take an academic approach with this review, but will say this: The Barbarians Are Coming is one of the few books both my father and I love. My dad thinks he's Genius Lung. For about two weeks after he finished the book, he'd flesh out our day-to-day interactions by saying: "Remember when Genius.... heh heh heh." Then he'd smile and nod at me knowingly, as if we shared some secret knowledge that he'd never known how to impart.

The shift into Genius's POV later in the book is a move that a lesser writer would've ruined his novel with, but Louie pulls it off with flair and heart, giving voice to a generation of fathers who might not have known what to say and how to say it.

This is a book I will teach for years to come; something to be treasured and shared.

A Good Read.......2004-11-29

I cannot pinpoint exactly why I liked this book, I just did. I can say that the writing was superb, and I enjoyed following the characters. There was wit, there was sadness, and at times a detached, cold lack of emotion. But the detachment was almost like a character to me.

One caveat. I found the references to the anatomy of the males in the book awkward in placement and content. They were extremely brief and only come up two, maybe three times. But, I was struck by how weird it felt for the author to be referencing it when and how he did each time. Maybe my gender prevents me from getting it.

That aside, I think this is a solid piece of literature worth reading.

New chapter in Asian American literature.......2004-04-04

I agree with a previous review that this book is quite different from the more popular genre of Asian American litreature. The traditional Asian American literature usually ends at the point where the protagonist gives up on her cultural roots, and that is only the halfway point in this book. David Wong Louie tells the story of what happens after that point, and provides a touching portrayal of what many first/second generation Asian Americans must go through in the multiple stages - and generations - of their lives. I would recommend this book over many other standard textbooks of Asian American literature classes that reflect Asian American lives as accurately as blaxpoitation films reflect African American lives.

Like a Big Mac: lots of calories-no nourishment........2002-03-11

I really wanted to like this book. I read it with great anticipation. I tend to like Asian-American authors and fine the retelling of their struggles bridging their family and cultural life with their American experience enlightening and entertaining. And, truth be told, this story probably had a lot to offer on that score.

However, in the end I found the book extremely disappointing, primarily because the main character is such a spineless wimp. I spent the entire book wanting to yell "Grow up you jerk!" It's been a long time since I have experienced so useless and loathsome a character. Had he been even halfway decent I probably could have gotten into the story. As it was I was so filled with pity for all these poor characters stuck forever in the same pages as this greedy, immature twerp that I lost track of the story entirely.

What's really frustrating is David Wong Louie can write. And the most impressive aspect of his writing is the depth and intensity of his characters. It's too bad he wasted so much effort on such a fine cast only to undermine it all in the end with such a lousy main character.

I can only hope his next effort is better constructed so that the story is allowed to emerge and be enjoyed.
