Wrong textbook for school........2007-09-30

The book in and of itself is great. It is not the correct book for school. It does not come with turbo tax and RIA checkpoint cd's. You will need each of these student versions too complete your assignments. Thompson publishing offers the full version for about the same amount of money.

The delivery of the book was fast, the book was in perfect conditions, BUT it did not include the CD (turbo tax softare) so just pay attention when ordering a book to make sure it comes with all the necessary.

But overall it was a good purchase.

I have to purchase this book for class and am a bit reluctant after reading the reviews. It seems as though the last reviewer knows or works for Hoffman. I am paying over $150 for a book and I therefore want up-to-date, well organized and well written information.

Great Book!.......2006-06-12

This is an excellent book to learn taxation from. I used West taxation books before going on to a career at a big 4 accounting firm!
As far as the previous reviewer, who is obsessed with out of date charts and tax forms....she/he doesn't really understand taxation. Tax codes change year in and out. When these books are published they go with the latest possible information.
Besides, if your goal is simply to learn the basics of preparing taxes, why is it so necessary to have all the current years tax code info? Especially when the tax code doesn't "usually" change a whole lot from year to year.
Anyways, I have checked out other tax textbooks, and this is the one I'd recommend (being someone with SOME experience in this field)

If your course requires this book, like mine did, go to the administrator of the school if you have to but talk them out of it.
The book frequently references other later chapters.
The book uses out of date tax forms, when the current years are available for free on irs.gov!
The book 'shortens' tables by grouping together years that are not really at the same rate, when the correct tables are available for free on irs.gov! It only warns you about this once in chapter 8, despite doing so all thru the book.
It spends way too much time on tax laws from prior years, and decades.

The quiz that the book provides for use with the chapters is bad!
It does not take into accout §167(k) which, admittedly only apply to 2003 and 2004, but those are the years given on the test.
It allocates on a 365 day basis for the leap year 2004 when the book (5 times!) told you to use 366 days if it is a leap year.
Some of the questions do not provide enough information to determine the correct answer.
There are also questions about items not mentioned in the book at all.

Not even the woman in class who DID taxes liked this book. It is difficult to imagine anyone it would be good for, unless maybe you needed to figure out how to depreciate a building you purchased in 1986.

The monograph introduces the reader to the world of inductive well logging - an established method for surveying the electrical conductivity of rocks surrounding a borehole. The emphasis is on developing a theory of inductive logging and on understanding logging tools basic physics, since this theory and understanding furnish valuable insights for inventing practical induction logging techniques.

The first chapter of the book presents the basic laws of electromagnetism from a point of view that will facilitate the application of the theory to problems in electromagnetic logging. Many topics that play an important role in the design and interpretation of tools readings are covered. The vertical resolution and radial depth of investigation of different induction tools is systematically considered. Special attention is paid to principles of induction logging with transversal induction coils, to transient method of induction logging in media with cylindrical and horizontal interfaces and to the influence of anisotropy on the electromagnetic field measured in a conducting medium. Multi-coil differential induction probes and induction logging based on measuring the inphase component of the secondary field or the quadrature component difference are also described in detail. The last chapter is devoted to mathematical modeling of the response of induction logging tools in 3D geometries. The theory of inductive logging presented in this volume can be applied to logging after drilling as well as logging while drilling.

I'm with Cupid... until the end.......2007-09-18

I love the premise of this book. A cynical Cupid narrates a love story as though it's just business as usual. I thought this was a very creative idea and made the book nicely complex. It put a harsh spotlight on the games people play and the masks they wear while searching for a relationship and also demonstrated some of the awful things they do to themselves and the people around them while knowing already that they shouldn't. Most of this was treated lightly and was comical on the surface, but with something darker lurking.

I felt that the ending fell apart a little bit though. The last few chapters we lose the story we've been following and focus instead on Cupid talking to other "spirits" and instead of just hinting at love lessons, the book starts hitting us over the head with them.

Overall, I'd say that I did enjoy this book, but there are many others that I've enjoyed more.

Chick lit meets the Roman Gods .......2005-01-26

Cynical Cupid believes he has the "worst job in the entire universe" as he deals with romance on Planet Thirty-seven, known by the whining inferior natives as Earth. His current assignment is to bring together Anna Munson and Nick Wells, who work in the same firm, but both avoid office romances. After hearing his laugh at a joke involving an imitation of a difficult client, Anna and Nick feel an attraction.

Perhaps it is Cupid's frustration over not obtaining the transfer to Planet Forty-three or just dealing with billions leading to some form of on the job stress, but on their first date, Cupid breaks the romance SOPs. He shoots a true love arrow into Anna's heart before the pair can become better acquainted with one another. Anna goes from self assured to floor mat as she would do anything including destroying her life for Nick. Cupid quickly realizes that after millennium of matchmaking he has made a big error that he must correct or at least cover-up because his employers will punish him for this rule breaking. He must make Anna not love her man; this should prove easy as Nick is a rat who uses abuses and surely loses sweet Anna if Cupid has his way.

Chick lit meets the Roman Gods in an amusing offbeat tale. The story line is fun to follow when Cupid is active, but loses some of its zaniness when nasty Nick is the center as he is just a selfish dude (ask the "the not-particularly-promising girl" about him). Still fans will enjoy this fine fantasy romance filled with a lead couple learning what a relationship really is.
