Customer Reviews:
I cannot recommend this book!.......2005-03-04
The sample questions are true/false and the answers are too obvious. The CPA exam is more challenging than that. The outlines don't hit the fine points that make a difference to candidates' understanding of the material. The complete study guides are excellent. If you don't have much time, the complete guides are broken down into specific topics to facilitate focusing on limited areas for persons with limited time.
a great STARTING point.......2001-12-20
I think that reading CPA Fast Track is a great way to BEGIN studying for the CPA exam. As opposed to other books that go into tremendous detail, this book just hits on the main topics. The material is presented logically and it's easy to understand. You can read through the entire book(250pgs)which covers all four parts of the exam relatively quickly. This book works very well with the Wiley problems and solutions book. Reading this book will give you a foundation in the basic material. Working lots of the problems and reading the solutions in the Wiley book reinforces the basics and covers lots of the detailed information that the book doesn't touch upon. I actually liked this book so much that I bought and I'm using the authors other CPA review materials which include fantastic cassettes, software T/F questions, and flashcards. Again, the author really cuts down the amount of material and focuses on the essentials that are needed to pass the exam. I think it's a good approach for anyone who doesn't want to feel overwhelmed and confused when studying for the CPA exam. The book also can be used as a last minute review, but I think it works great as a starting point in your preparation. It also can serve as a guide to filter out the less important information you'll encounter if you're using other review materials. It's worth the small investment, and I'm happy I found it.
It is good, but not so good!.......2001-04-27
I took the CPA exam on November 2000. This book helped me in some topics such as auditing, federal taxes (individual) and the theory of financial accounting and reporting. But, It lacks of exhibits and any good example that can help you to develop what you learned or to maximize the understanding. Some topics are covered too slightly. I had to complement it with the Wiley Review Outline and study guide. I took also a coaching and I found many discrepancies with this book and what was taught in the coaching, specially in commercial law. It is that, a study outline, do not base all your study on it.
not enough........1999-08-31
It is very condensed and not enough of material is covered. I really recommend Wiley cpa review by Delaney. It is 5 times thick, but it really cover all material you need for cpa.
but on the other hand, let say cpa test is only a week away, and you want to cover key material for cpa, then you should have it.

Book Description
This book deals with one of the great dramas of our day, the transformation of countries from economic backwardness, or a socialist somnolence, into greater efficiency and participation in the invigorating currents of international trade and investment. This book is about building market institutions and about the struggle to shed institutional baggage of the past. It is about new 'openings'. It is about liberalization of economic policies, about relaxing controls, and welcoming the influx of foreign capital and goods. Above all, the underlying theme of this book is the search for appropriate government policies, on issues vital to emerging nations (defined here as developing nations and former communist bloc countries), such as exchange rate management, acquisition of technology, privatization, capital flows, trade and direct investment.
Book Description
The economic power of Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRICs) is rapidly increasing, changing the landscape of global economics and politics. Top scholars of international business address in this vital volume the markets, strategy implications, challenges and possibilities of this new economic reality.
As these four nations acquire greater economic clout, the opportunities for other countries increase. The contributors describe the favorable circumstances these evolving economies could provide for the US and other countries, such as expanded markets and services, higher returns on investments, and new partners in building a more peaceful and prosperous world. In contrast, they also discuss risks to traditional industries and possible challenges to positions on human rights and intellectual property protections, environmental standards, free markets and democratic governments. The volume emphasizes the need for companies to adopt strategies to stay ahead in the changing business environment. Governments must also design and implement new policies geared toward mutually beneficial relationships with BRICs.
This enlightening study will be of great interest to students and scholars of international business. Executives of large companies will find it of great practical use when planning their organization's future strategies.

Book Description
This book is about conscience and love in making judicial decisions. It looks at law not as a body of rigid rules applied by emotionless judges, but as a creative process in which the judges make their fundamental choices. The judges do love and they do hate when they make their decisions.
On the basis of the rich tradition of Christian ethics, the author addresses the question: why should the judges love those who are affected by their decisions, and how do they do that?
Readership: Academics and anyone interested in philosophy of law and legal ethics.

Or must we "make haste slowly" - building on traditions, going ahead only with support of the population and with institutionally viable programmes that fit the society? Deals with local environmental management of small-scale agriculture in marginal areas. Case studies (Burkina Faso, Indonesia, Kenya, Mali, Peru, Sri Lanka) illustrate the great diversity of problems and approaches. (Unrevised reprint)

Book Description
The discoveries of neutral currents and of the W and Z bosons marked a watershed in the history of CERN. They established the validity of the electroweak theory and convinced physicists of the importance of renormalizable non-Abelian gauge theories of fundamental interactions. The articles collected in this book have been written by distinguished physicists who contributed in a crucial way to these developments. The book provides a historical account of those discoveries and of the construction and testing of the Standard Model. It also contains a discussion of the future of particle physics and gives an updated status of the LHC and its detectors currently being built at CERN. The book addresses those readers interested in particle physics including the educated public.

What could more genuinely embody the spirit of Christmas (or Hogswatch, on the Discworld) than a Terry Pratchett book about the holiday season? Every secular Christmas tradition is included. But as this is the 21st Discworld novel, there are some unusual twists.
This year the Auditors, who want people to stop believing in things that aren't real, have hired an assassin to eliminate the Hogfather. (You know him: red robe, white beard, says, "Ho, ho, ho!") Their evil plot will destroy the Discworld unless someone covers for him. So someone does. Well, at least Death tries. He wears the costume and rides the sleigh drawn by four jolly pigs: Gouger, Tusker, Rooter, and Snouter. He even comes down chimneys. But as fans of other Pratchett stories about Death (Mort, Reaper Man, and Soul Music) know, he takes things literally. He gives children whatever they wish for and appears in person at Crumley's in The Maul.
Fans will welcome back Susan, Death of Rats (the Grim Squeaker), Albert, and the wizardly faculty of Unseen University, and revel in new personalities like Bilious, the "oh god of Hangovers." But you needn't have read Pratchett before to laugh uproariously and think seriously about the meanings of Christmas. --Nona Vero
Book Description
Better watch out ...
It's that time of year again. Hogswatchnight. Tis the season to be jolly, to hang mistletoe and holly, and other stuff ending in olly.
Tis the season when the Hogfather himself dons his red suit and climbs in his sleigh pulled by--of course!--eight hogs and brings gifts to all the boys and girls of Discworld.
But this year, there's a problem. A stranger has taken the place of the Hogfather. Well, not exactly a stranger. He's actually pretty well known. He carries a scythe along with his bag of toys, and he's going to SLEIGH everyone he sees tonight.
Ho ho ho.
Even the laugh is wrong. The switch has been arranged by the Auditors, mysterious superbeings who want our universe to be a collection of rocks swinging in curves through space. Life is messy. Why not get rid of it? And who better than--you know who?
Somebody has to rescue the real Hogfather before this morbid impostor tracks soot on the world's carpets. It's up to Ankh-Morpork's intellectual elite, the assembled wizards of Unseen University--with the help of a monster-bashing nanny, the world's worst inventor, plus a bona-fide, honest-to-god god (the oh god of hangovers, to be precise)--to come up with a plan to save the universe.
And they'd better hurry. The bogus Hogfather is asking the wrong questions. Like: How come rich kids get all the nice toys? How come the poor kids are left with the cheap stuff?
"That's life," he is told.
Which cuts no ice with Death.
Customer Reviews:
Terry Pratchett is a genius.......2007-05-20
Terry Pratchett's books are very funny and this is no exception. A very light and amusing divrsion.
An Excellent Book!.......2006-11-03
Pratchett, Terry. (1998). Hogfather.
New York: HarperPrism. 0-06-105905-6
Comedy / Satire. 354 pages.
Terry Pratchett's Hogfather is excellent. I have never read a more satisfyingly good comedy in my life.
Hogfather is about a young woman named Susan - Death's granddaughter. The story takes place in a world called Discworld; almost like an alternate universe of Earth. There are fairies, gnomes, wizards, and even the Hogfather (like Santa Clause) on Discworld. Since Susan is Death's granddaughter, she possesses some of his qualities, like being able to see magical creatures, doing the job of Death, and being able to walk through walls. At the beginning of the book, all she wants is to be normal, so she took a job being a governess. Then, on Hogswatch Eve, Death came down the chimney instead of the Hogfather. Susan then found out that the Hogfather was `dead' and Death was filling in for him.
She was forced to go back to her magical ways in order to save mankind.
In the Wizard's Guild fairies start popping up everywhere and the wizards soon realize that if enough people believe in a certain type of fairy, like the verruca fairy, there is one. Susan goes to them for help, along with the Hangover Ohgod whom she created on accident.
Also on Discworld is the Assassin's Guild, where a man named Mr. Teatime got instructed to kill the Hogfather by the Auditors, a group of things who keep track of everything on Earth. They think that life is too messy, so they plan to kill everyone. Mr. Teatime and his hired gang travel to Death's house and break the Hogfather's Immortality hourglass. Then they go to the Tooth Fairy's castle and, using the teeth they find there, make them not believe in the Hogfather.
Will Susan save all of Discworld? Read and find out!
Some other Terry Pratchett books in the Discworld series that I would recommend are Mort, Going Postal, The Last Continent, and Monstrous Regiment. Terry Pratchett's books are almost constantly funny. His plots are so intriguing and creative. While reading his books, you'll never get bored.
This book is for an older crowd, though. He uses large and hard words frequently. His jokes are also mature and might take some thinking to get. Don't let that stop you though, you won't regret it!
I give this book a 5 out of 5 because it has everything you're looking for in a book. I loved it and am planning to read more of Terry Pratchett's books.
Regards,
Kathryn Green
COWER BRIEF MORTALS. HO HO HO........2006-09-20
"Hogfather" is the twentieth book in Terry Pratchett's hugely popular Discworld series and was first published in 1996. He has gone on to win the Carnegie Medal for "The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents" and was awarded the OBE in 1998.
"Hogfather" is sometimes known as the third book in "The Death Trilogy". Like the trilogy's first two instalments ("Mort" and "Reaper Man") it gives Death - tall guy, somewhat underfed, carries a scythe, big grin - more than just a brief cameo. Like "Reaper Man", it's the Auditors who are causing problems. The Auditors are in charge of the universe : they see that atoms spin, that gravity works and that things move in curves. However, they hate life - especially humans (too many irregularities). In "Reaper Man", they wanted to force Death into retirement. This time, they want the Hogfather - Discworld's version of Father Christmas - `removed' from office (or grotto, perhaps). To this end, they've hired the disturbed (and disturbing) Mister Teatime from the Guild of Assassins to make sure he stays `removed'. Luckily, Death has discovered what's going on : with Hogswatch Night looming, the Grim Reaper dons a false beard, strategically places a cushion and takes control of the sleigh.
Death shares the spotlight, though : his new duties cause some problems for his grand-daughter, Susan Sto-Helit. Susan is working as a governess in Ankh-Morpork and, as part of her job, she regularly beats up the bogeyman with her trusty poker. In her free time, she occasionally drops into Biers for a drink ("Sometimes you want to go...where nobody knows your name"). It's in the pub that She's warned about her grandfather's strange behaviour by the Death of Rats and his eyeball-obsessed sidekick, Quoth the Raven. Initially, she isn't at all pleased to see the pair, but she has no choice but to get involved. The last time Death neglected his Duty, Susan was expected to take over...
Despite his profession, Death is one of the funniest characters the Discworld has to offer, and Hogfather sees Pratchett on top form. Quoth and Death of Rats are a welcome addition - they're a great double act. It may be a slight advantage to have read at least one from "Mort", "Reaper Man" or "Soul Music" before this (all are very funny) - however, even if you haven't you'll still find "Hogfather" hilarious. Highly recommended.
Discworld.......2006-08-27
I've decided he's too good and too prolific for me to write a brand new review every single time I read one of his books. Discworld currently has 34 titles and every one of them will probably knock your socks off. His mind bubbles and flashes like a boiling pot of electric eels, and I simply can't get enough of his writing.
A reviewer has compared him to Geoffrey Chaucer. He reminds me more of Douglas Adams, or perhaps S Morgenstern. Great company, isn't it? He's an extremely skillful and imaginative writer, damn funny, clever and observant to boot. He's also very easy to read. A master of characterization, and if there's anything else you like about reading that I didn't mention here, assume I simply forgot. He's awesome.
Another reviewer mentioned Jonathan Swift and PG Wodehouse. Why such hallowed company? Because Pratchett belongs there! Truly, I'm enjoying my quest to read every book in the series. You should do the same, and begin your quest at the library because he's got to be there. He's awesome!
Yet another reviewer said Jerome K Jerome meets Lord of the Rings. Yeah, that works too.
Why do we, as reviewers, compare authors to other authors? Because it's easier than thinking. In the case of Terry Pratchett, it's probably because we'd otherwise wind up quoting the guy. He's so unique that we just don't know how else to cope with his greatness. Even this paragraph sounds like foamy drool raving, doesn't it? That's how all readers react to Pratchett. Reviewers simply don't have the good sense to keep it to themselves.
I could call his writing fantasy, but I could likewise call what Douglas Adams wrote science fiction. In both cases, I wouldn't be wrong, but I'd be neglecting so much and just totally missing the point. A rare few authors transcend a genre to such a degree that you know they're shouting out, loud and proud, a big fat "Bite me!"
I love Terry Pratchett's writing, and I completely understand why some folks refer to him as their favorite author. Or favourite, I should say, since we're being British. He's one of those authors that makes you want to grab whoever's in hearing range and start reading passages aloud. I'm simply thrilled that there's such an extremely talented and prolific author who's been working for years without me being aware of him. Now I have much catching up to do, and I will love it.
Susan is my hero........2006-07-30
In all honesty, after you read this book, she'll probably be your hero too. You have to admire a girl who not only knows the boogieman exists, but also knows that if you put a fluffly blanket over a boogieman's head, it thinks it doesn't exist. She's one of the most logical characters in all of Prachett's Discworld, which isn't to say that she doesn't get sucked into fantastic going ons, but that she deals with them in a precise, sensible manner. As Death's reluctant heir, she's fantastic, and it's worth reading Hogfather just for her.
