Book Description
Work more effectively with the
Excel Working Papers CD-ROM! Designed to accompany Kimmel, Weygandt, and Kieso’s Principles of Accounting, the Excel templates on this CD provide a framework that helps students format their accounting solutions properly. These custom forms are available for all relevant end-of-chapter exercises, problems, and cases. The Excel Working Papers provide the option of printing forms and completing them manually, or entering data electronically and then printing out a completed form. By entering data electronically, students can now paste homework to a new file and e-mail the worksheet to their instructor.
This new
Principles of Accounting text helps students navigate their future accounting and business careers with a practical set of accounting tools and the confidence they need to use those tools effectively in making business decisions. The authors have taken a more conceptual and decision-making approach to the material, which many instructors are now bringing into their Accounting courses based on the AECC "white paper" report and other recent market trends (e.g., a reduction in Accounting majors, etc.).
Kimmel, Weygandt, and Kieso motivate students by beginning with the larger picture. Taking a macro-to-micro approach, the discussion starts with real financial statements first, rather than starting with the Accounting Cycle. This innovative approach quickly establishes how a financial statement communicates the financing, investing, and operating activities of a business to users of accounting information. Throughout, the text clearly demonstrates the importance of accounting to society and the relevance of accounting to students’ future careers.
Customer Reviews:
Great service.......2007-05-15
The book was as good as it was described and delivered on time
Excellent Introductory Text.......2006-03-09
I have never written a review on here, but I felt like I should give praise for this book, beacuse I really liked it.
I just finished my second principles of accounting class, and thus completed this text book. I found it to be an excellent learning resource. The book is well written to make the subject entertaining and accessible. There is a wealth of problems after each chapter, and many illustrations to aid in understanding. Even if you get a bad professor, you can easily learn the subject just from this text.
Principles of Accounting, with Annual Report.......2005-09-27
Book used for accounting classes...very complete and thorough. Entertaining and helpful stories and illustrations to help understand concepts.
Best single volume accounting text out there.......2005-08-15
I found this to be the best single volume accounting text to include both financial accounting and managerial accounting topics at a reasonable price.
I use this in my accounting courses. The other reviewers mentioned that the text uses jargon. It does not, though one will need to know or learn standard American business terminology. If you are not interested in American business, you should not be taking an accounting course in the first place. Many of my students are taking this course because it is required. Many of them would be better off in another major, as they have no interest in American business.
Difficult to read.......2005-08-02
This textbook is very difficult to read and comprehend. When I took Principles of Accounting the textbook was very unhelpful and left myself and others looking for alternate resources to understand the basic concepts of accounting. But for those who are in classes that must use this textbook, I recoomend finding the best ways to avoid buying this, such as sharing with two or three friends or buying used.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent for self study.......2006-04-26
The book not only teaches you how to book accounts, but also why to do so, which I rarely found in other comparable accounting books. It helps you understand the logic behind the accounting rules. The author is both a good teacher and good reseacher. I love this book!
Wordy and heavy.......2003-05-28
I have been using this book for an Intermediate Accounting class that I have to take as a pre requisite for a Master's degree. Even though the book is quite complete in explaining accounting principles it is unecessarily wordy and extremely heavy.
The first five chapters (220 pages) provide a review of what accounting is, the accounting information system, the income statement and the balance sheet. Most of the what is written here is either too basic or will be later found in the remaining chapters of the book. These pages could be easily removed without sacrificing the remaining contents and the understanding of accounting.
Later chapters, however, are also wordy and take too much time explaining concepts that could readily be understood in a couple of lines. You end up getting tired of reading the same thing again and again.
In the end, we have to pay the price for so many pages. With 1300 + pages this book is the heaviest one I have ever carried around. Many people in my class have to use a wheeled backpack. I sometimes can't understand the fascination of editors in the US for such heavy books. If you go to Europe, Asia, and South America, books are usually thinner and much, much lighter.
I would recommend the book to be offered in a CD Rom (or e text) format. Carriyng my laptop around makes more sense than carrying the book.
Accounting can sound less confusing than explained here.......2002-08-08
This book for undergraduate accounting classes at the junior level was more confusing to me than the comparable book by Kieso et al. The sequence of the chapters is not entirely logical. More advanced concepts seem to be covered towards the beginning whereas some basic chapters are discussed towards the end of the book. It was especially confusing when not covering the chapter in chronological order - too bad that my class's syllabus was not outlined according to this book's chapter sequence. In a different class - when we used Intermediate Accounting by Kieso - jumping back and forth was not a big problem. This book by Spiceland also seemed to be very wordy. Studying by solving problems at the end of the book seemed to work. However, it is more important to know how your teacher designs the quizzes and exams and then study accordingly. On the CD that comes with it, there is a lot of ballast. The quizzes are the only valuable thing, I felt. There is not really a lot of use complaining about its weight - accounting books always seem to be extremely heavy and pricy. But this certainly holds true for this one as well!!! When I tried to resell the book at the university bookstore, they would not take it back because it was selling badly on a national scale. Very frustrating when you paid [$$$] just a couple of months earlier...
boring.......2002-05-30
This book put me to sleep. It is a very bland book. This is based on the volume one edition chapters 1-14.
Excellent Instruction.......2001-10-19
Straightforward and logical, the material in this text is so well laid out that it is truely possible to learn Intermediate Accounting on your own. An excellent sequential and progressive presentation of a difficult subject! My school has changed texts and is using Kieso's text, but I want to learn the material (all but impossible with Kieso) so this is the text I rely on!

Book Description
Electronic Safety and Soundness and its technical annexes identify and discuss four key pillars that are necessary to foster a secure electronic environment and the safety and soundness of financial systems worldwide. The detailed annexes of this monograph are relevant for chief information and security officers and others who are responsible for securing network systems. First, the monograph defines electronic finance and electronic security (e-security) and explains why these areas require attention. Next, it presents a picture of the emerging global security industry. Then, it develops a risk management framework to assist policymakers and practitioners in understanding the tradeoffs and risks inherent in using an open network infrastructure. It also provides examples of tradeoffs that may arise with respect to technological innovations, privacy, quality of service, and security in the design of an e-security policy framework. Finally, it outlines issues in four critical and interrelated areas that require attention in the building of an adequate e-security infrastructure. These are: (i) the legal, regulatory, and enforcement framework; (ii) external and internal monitoring of e-security practices; (iii) public-private sector cooperation; and (iv) the business case for practicing layered e-security.
This title is intended for policy makers in the area of electronic security and those working with financial services providers. The detailed annexes will be of particular interest to chief information and security officers and others responsible for securing networks.

One Eyed Mack is Back.......2005-08-03
I read this book because I loved The One Eyed Mack in "Kick the Can". I did enjoy "Crown Oklahoma" very much, but I must say that it is no "Kick the Can".
I was particularly intrigued by the story line, and how timely it is today in light of the Jayson Blair and Dan Rather scandals. It is almost as if Mr. Lehrer predicted such events.
It was great to be reunited with Mack, Jackie, and "Leutenant Dad", and it was a very enjoyable book. I highly recommend that you do not read this until you have read "Kick the Can" first.
Inadequately sourced.......2003-07-19
Crown Oklahoma is shorthand for putting a dome on the capitol. The narrator is the one-eyed lieutenant governor of the Sooner State. The lieutenant governor is also referred to a the second man. His son Tommy Walt plays semi-professional baseball. He is a pitcher. His wife is the founder and the owner of a chain of drive-through markets. Tommy Walt seems to collapse at his job handling baggage for the bus company. He does a riff on lost and mislaid luggage when his father locates him. There is a concern, raised by a national television news story, that a Mafia-type organization exists in Oklahoma. The narrator runs down one suspect, Boomer Sooner, who is in the transportation business as the driver and owner of a single bus. This is not a good prospect for the role of master criminal. Then a bomb blows the guy to bits. Investigators surmise that since the news reports indicated Boomer was part of a new group impinging on mob activity, the mob had him killed. The fallout from climbing the golden ladder to anchordom is described and elaborated in the book. The tales get taller as things proceed. Son Tommy Walt continues to experience difficulty and the excuse given is that he is a pitcher. The crown Oklahoma project is laughable, particularly when planners wonder if it could be made to pay for itself. Oklahoma Indian Territoy was opened up on first-come basis for land claims. Sooners were cheaters, they snuck in ahead of time.
Wonderful mirror of the mindset and humor of the Okie!.......1998-03-22
Wonderful expression of the Oklahoma spirit, mindset and humor! A terrific place and a delightful book.

Home on the range.......2006-02-07
Anyone who still thinks the cowboy life is one of great romance - man and animal working in harmony under a blissful sky in wide open country, free and independent, the epitome of Jeffersonian democracy at work - had better read this honest, eyes-wide-open account of ranch life today. Although cowboyng was never really like the myths made it out to be, for some reason the myths took firm root. John Erickson worked for four years in the 1970s on a ranch in the Oklahoma panhandle, and this is his warts-and-all account of his experiences. Unlike in the myths, herding cattle is hard, sometimes brutal work, made even worse by harsh weather conditions, unpredictable animals, unending routine (read tedious) tasks, and cut-throat business practices (this last might be the cruelest of all). Not to say there aren't good times - close friends, favorite horses, handsome views when the wind lays down and time permits noticing - but Erickson makes clear that these good times are only oases in a Sahara of hardships. Not that he's complaining about that - just making an observation. But even Erickson can't resist the mythologizing and romancing completely, and where the book apparently ends at a livestock auction where he sells his favorite horse to (he assumes) a meat-packing plant, the horse is miraculously saved at the last minute and sent to a ranch in Montana: "I can see him now," Erickson writes, "standing in a green meadow with the Montana mountains blue in the distance." Myths, thank God, do not die easy deaths. A well-written, informative, and honest account of punching cattle on the open range.
Wild cows and dubious horses . . ........2005-05-19
This is a solid 5-star book for any reader interested in the day-to-day, season-by-season work of cowboying and running a ranch. The author describes in this well-written book his four years (1974-78) of single-handedly managing a cow-calf operation on 5000 acres of sandy grassland in the Oklahoma Panhandle. The writing is precise and informative, full of love for the life he has chosen, admiration for the hard-working men who are his friends and neighbors, and a deepening understanding of the ranch's four not-always-cooperative horses.
There's also a good deal of humor in the book, much of it owing to the particularly unmanageable nature of the cattle on the ranch. An episode of fruitlessly chasing two wild cows through a series of pasture fences made it into a collection of cowboy humor called "Horsing Around," by Lawrence Clayton and Kenneth Davis. We also read how the author gets a reputation for picking the worst weather for fall roundups. The book ends on a soberer note, as Erickson is told that the ranch is being sold and that he's out of a job. While he's happy enough to clear the ranch of the hateful cattle that have tried his patience, there's a bittersweetness as he parts with the horses that we've come to know so well.
This is the first, and maybe best, of a series of books by the author about his ranching experiences. It was followed by "Cowboy Country" and "LZ Cowboy." As in the others, the text of this book is illustrated with a number of nicely selected black and white photographs. Larry McMurtry has some interesting words to say about cowboys by way of introduction (he's usually not so appreciative). Thanks to the University of Nebraska Press for keeping this fine book in print. Readers will also enjoy Ben K. Green's "Wild Cow Tales" and Thomas McGuane's "Some Horses."

Biomass production, crown architecture, leaf gas exchange, and specific gravity of North Carolina Coastal (NCC) and local Oklahoma/Arkansas (O/A) families of 15-year-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) were examined on an excessively droughty site in southeastern Oklahoma. The O/A family produced more branch and foliage biomass per hectare than the NCC family, but the two families produced equivalent amounts of stem biomass per hectare. The O/A family achieved its greater branch and foliage biomass production by virtue of supporting a higher number of live branches per tree. Photosynthetic capacity, needle stomatal conductance of water vapor, transpiration rates, and intrinsic water use efficiency, which were each measured periodically throughout the study, were similar for the two families, as were stand densities and survival. Specific gravity and DBH were similar for the two families, but trees of the NCC family were significantly taller than those of the O/A source. Given the comparable gas exchange characteristics and stem biomass production of the two families on this droughty site as well as the NCC family's production of wood with fewer knots, we conclude that planting of the NCC family in favor of the local family on excessively drained soils in the northwestern portion of the loblolly pine range may be a justifiable management option.
