Really Helpful.......2007-01-09

I got this book in order to refresh myself on the media planning process and it was very helpful. The different topics were clearly outlined and reflected a logical thought process.
It even goes into non-traditional media which I have not seen in any other books.
My only disappointment related to the way it addressed planning in markets which do NOT have exhaustive media information. I'm sure that was not the intent of the book anyway, so that's my problem.
A good, informative read...must see for new media buyers/planners.

I've worked in the media departments of two major advertisers and a major advertising agency--and I use this book all the time when I need help on any training sessions I am conducting. It is very thorough with all information you need, but also concise enough not to get bogged down.

For my own use, I find the section on Media Planning Resources on the Internet and invaluable tool to find more information.

A must for any media planner's or buyer's bookshelf!

Sound Media Basics.......2003-02-14

One of the mysteries of the UK ad scene is that there is no good, up-to-date, practitioner-written textbook on media planning, so the arrival of an updated version of an established US text is doubly welcome.

Jack Sissors and (mostly, as a result of Mr Sissor's ill-health) Roger Baron have done a very thorough and comprehensive job of explaining and illustrating the basics, from how to get information about any given medium to how to put together a strategy and a detailed plan.

Unsurprisingly, the material is purely US-based, and therefore includes, for example, considerable discussion of the problems of reconciling different area definitions; but analyses such as how to weight a plan by region or medium can apply, suitably modified, anywhere.

There is a wide range of suggestions for (mostly) websites from which to seek detailed information, some of which may be both unfamiliar and useful to non-US readers - the MPA's analysis of the effects of position and ad size in magazines is a good example....

Many of the references may seem old, but, as the authors make clear, they have gone back to the classic originals of basic thinking - and much of this still holds good today.

The new edition is up-to-date, with quite extensive discussion of the internet as a medium, and slightly more limited coverage of cross-media and multi-media planning. Conversely, data fusion barely gets a mention - and is not in the index. Nor are optimisers, which are not discussed in any detail - merely treated as a tool of the trade - or modelling, which gets a brief half page on p374.

If the book has a weakness, it is in the area of evaluation, which gets several mentions, but little detailed discussion. In an era where effectiveness has marched up advertisers' list of priorities, this may need addressing next time.

Nonetheless, any would-be media person should read it, and learn.

A Must Read for Anyone Getting Started in Media Planning.......2003-02-09

Roger Baron's book goes to great lengths to cover all the basics having to do with the media planning discipline. This book should be required reading for all entry level media professionalls as well as those considering a career in media planning. Well written, good flow. Highly recommended.

Great for beginners... but for directors and managers... not.......2002-07-26

Unless you want to refresh your memory on what GRPs, impressions, and reach and frequency are, or unless you want to know the definitions of these terms, this book isn't for you.

An earlier edition of this book was one of my first books when I have just entered the ad media planning field and I found it really interesting.

Just a Dictionary.......2005-07-02

I was really disappointed to pick this book up and find that it is a dictionary of media terms. Although it includes just about every possible media term out there, I expected more from Mr. Surmanek in terms of an updated version of his first book. Sorely disappointed. Returned the book and will continue the hunt for a great teaching book for beginners in the field like myself.

Interacting chaotic oscillators are of interest in many areas of physics, biology, and engineering. In the biological sciences, for instance, one of the challenging problems is to understand how a group of cells or functional units, each displaying complicated nonlinear dynamic phenomena, can interact with one another to produce a coherent response on a higher organizational level.

This book is a guide to the fascinating new concept of chaotic synchronization. The topics covered range from transverse stability and riddled basins of attraction in a system of two coupled logistic maps over partial synchronization and clustering in systems of many chaotic oscillators, to noise-induced synchronization of coherence resonance oscillators. The Neoproterozoic-Cambrian transition was a time of fundamental change in the biosphere. Between about 570 and 510 million years ago, marine organisms underwent considerable evolutionary innovation during a time of shifting ecological setting. This dramatic activity culminated in the first stratigraphic appearances of many recognizable groups of animals, an "event" often referred to as the "Cambrian explosion". In addition, there was a major change from a microbial mat-dominated sediment-water interface to a more extensively burrowed interface in shallow-marine settings. The early fossil record is a function not only of the rise or ecological diversification of marine organisms, but also the development of taphonomic and sedimentary conditions suitable for the preservation of mineralizing and nonmineralizing organisms.

Essential For Shadow Fans!.......2006-03-30

Written by Walter Gibson and Anthony Tollin, this gem of a book contains a wealth of essays,critical analyses of many aspects of the Shadow,and of course,there are plenty of pictures throughout(most pulp magazine covers are in black and white, only a select number are in color). This book also reprints a portion of a Shadow newspaper comic from the 40's(in black and white).
Lastly,the 'Scrapbook' contains a Shadow short story called "The Riddle of The Rangoon Ruby"(written by Walter Gibson, and appears nowhere else).

A real gem!.......2001-03-30

This book turned out to be so much more than I had hoped, containing information on all aspects of the Shadow. The book begins with Gibson's excellently written history of his writing of the shadow stories, has a list of Shadow novels, shows Shadow covers (many in color!), discusses the Shadow's agents, shows illustrations, and then has a never before published Shadow story: The Riddle of the Rangoon Ruby! Then the book covers the Shadow radio show, includes a list of all broadcasts, and has the scripts of two broadcasts (The Death House Rescue-1937, and the White Legion-1938). Then the Shadow movies are covered, and the Shadow comics; including a whole comic adventure entitled the Mystery of the Sealed Box. Finally there are notes on codes used by the Shadow, and various old-time Shadow merchandise.

See? Everything you could want! This is book is a real gem, and must have for any Shadow fan. I enjoyed Gibson's story of writing the Shadow beyond anything I could have imagined, and absolutely loved the Rangoon Ruby. I sincerely hope that they someday reissue this book.

fabulous great for everyone.......1999-05-16

It was a great book i didnt like The Shadow at first then i read this and i found The Shadow cool now im trying to get everything of The Shadow. Even my friends who didnt enjoy The Shadow found this interesting. My son liked The Shadow before I did so we actually got it for him and i started reading and I started enjoying it too. A must for fans and everyone. Walter Gipson is a great novelist (wrote the shadow magazine pulps) he was wonderful writer for The Shadow magazine pulps.

Clever concept, disappointing execution.......2005-12-05

This is the epitome of a high-concept book, and it unfortunately attempts to skate by on the concept alone. The concept is a fun one -- but it's not enough to make up for the weak writing, the lame jokes, the incoherent plot, the introduction of distracting quasi-cyberpunk elements into the story, and the juvenile attempts to shock. The author is too much in love with his own cleverness, and his idea of funny involves naming streets in his city "Geisel Lane" (after Ted Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss) or "Franklin Street" and "Dixon Lane" (after the pseudonymous author of the Hardy Boys books). Many of the gags are on par with a bad Mad magazine piece, and some don't even make sense (why, exactly, do the Hardy Boys pretend to be Hispanic? obviously the real answer is that this enables the author to skirt intellectual property complaints by calling them "Robusto" instead of "Hardy" -- but in the context of the story it really makes no sense at all).

Sadly, even the jokes that do work get on your nerves after a while, since they all amount to basically the same joke told over and over ("Look! I just referred to another kidlit author or character! Remember that one?") And if you try to look beyond the jokes, you can't -- as they say, there's no there there.

So what that leaves is 340 pages of winking in-jokes, clunky prose, some really bad sex writing, and about 3 pages worth of genuine wit. As a 3-page piece in The New Yorker, this concept could've been a winner. But this hypertrophic treatment is a huge disappointment.

Fallen , fallen is Brown the Great........2002-07-17

What goes up must come down, the saying goes, and Jay Russell has imagined a world in which all our childhood heroes have done just that, not simply reaching Earth, but bypassing it and sinking more deeply into the mire than I would have thought possible.

Deconstructionism and continuation have been a part of literature, almost as long as there has been literature. New authors with new ideas use the ideas, words and characters of old authors in order to illuminate the present or make some other kind of statement. Witness "The New Testament", "The Wide Sargasso Sea", "The Wind Done Gone", "Paradise Lost" or any Sherlock Holmes pastiche to see what I mean. Sometimes these attempts are profound; mostly they are dull and add nothing. Then there's "Brown Harvest", which is both a tongue-in-cheek update to Hammet's "Red Harvest" and a continuation of the stories of nearly every child detective you ever read. Ch*rry Ames is here, as are D*nny Dunne, J*piter Jones and the H*ppy H*llisters. The H*rdy Boys are major characters. So are B*gs Meany and Curious Ge*rge. But the story truly belongs to the smartest kid in Id(e)aville, *ncycl*p*d** Br*wn.

Yes, I've hidden the identities of these characters, just as Russell did, to protect their memories. In Russell's mean streets, nothing good ever happens to a fictional character when he grows up. These once-pure literary entities are now alcoholics, drug-addicts, prostitutes, wastrels, murderers, crooks and sodomites. If you loved these characters, then learning how they turned out will break your heart.

Fortunately, this is only one possible ending for these kids and I'd like to think that other books, as yet unwritten, hold a brighter future for them. But that's another matter entirely.

The story looesly follows its hard-boiled inspiration, "Red Harvest", in that a lone man enters a town gone wild, run by three opposing gangs (in this case, violent software companies). Each gang hires the loner who, in turn, begins turning the gangs against one another in order to force them to wipe the others out. The goal is to gain revenge and be the last man standing.

Jay Russell is a sly and unflinching reporter, able to bring both humor and pathos to nearly every paragraph. I did find myself laughing out loud and relating the plot or dialog to my friends (most of whom never read the originals, sadly). But on nearly every page I also felt a piece of my childhood die when I saw what Russell had done to my beloved childhood friends. This is not a book for sentimentalists or the faint of heart.
But if you can stomach it, this is a hell of an entertaining book, one that will keep you reading, keep you guessing, keeping you rummaging through the attic to retrieve those relics of the past and read them again, to assure yourself they are still as they were.

And if you get a chance, read Jay Russell's "Marty Burns" series. This book led me in that direction and I'm now a huge fan.

A lot of fun.......2001-12-12

This book is a gigantic kick for anybody who grew up reading about the adventures of Francisco and Jose Robusto, or about the Old Keene Mansion on Drew Hill, or about... well, about a certain Boy Detective we all appear reluctant to mention by name.

Is this a copywrite thing?

very entertaining genre-bending.......2001-11-30

This is an unusual page-turner in which a ridiculous number of characters from kid's fiction enact a hard-boiled detective novel (the plot similarities to Hammett's Red Harvest are particularly marked). (...) to mention the other obvious primary source for the story, I will only say this: Roach Blackwell=Bugs Meaney. If you know who Bugs is, and you appreciate dark humor, you will enjoy this book.
