Customer Reviews:
Good reasonable information.......2006-05-02
Level headed approach to handle a problem that could be desaterous.
The book is easy to read and follow the steps for protection from and recovery of damaged credit.
A Home Security System .......2005-06-19
This is not the feel good book of the summer, it almost scares the pants off of you given the many different ways faceless criminals can rudely interrupt your life with identity theft. This book details out many of the identity theft scams that are prevalent today. It shows you, maybe in a way that is a touch over the top, just how vulnerable you are. On the positive side it also gives you the tools to fight back and the steps you can take to protect yourself. It also instructs you on what you can do if you become an identity theft victim. The book details out how the world of credit operates and your rights and responsibilities.
The current world we live in enables us to be discriminated against in the credit world because of our age, gender or marital status. The privacy of our financial information may be compromised and is so widely disseminated that it is making it more and more vulnerable to identity theft all the time. That is why this book is important, it gives the reader some tools to help us remain safe or at least less vulnerable. Overall the author gives the reader a number of useful and well described tips for how to keep as safe as possible and how to fix problems if they come up. It is a bit on the dramatic side, but if you are a victim of this type of crime then the descriptions are probably right on the mark.

Relieving Sciatica:Using Complementary Medicine to overcome pain of Sciatica.......2006-03-11
The author gave many different approaches to treating sciatica.I found the book helpful in this vein, but anyone looking for a specific treatment for sciatica should look elsewhere.
Helpful Advice.......2004-04-22
This is a good resource for those suffering from sciatica - anything that works for you will certainly be a relief. good Luck.
Good information.......2003-05-18
A lot of research was done for this book. It is well organized and written. Most people with long term sciatica are probably familiar with most treatment modalities listed. For those who aren't, it could be overwhelming as there are so many options yet in my experience so much depends on the practitioner. But for many sufferers of sciatica, perhaps there is a nugget here.

Book Description
The overwhelming majority of both civil and criminal appeals (about 80 to 85 percent) fail. Given poor track record compiled by the Bar, Professional Judgment on Appeal focuses on the need for lawyers to separate the winning appeals from the losing appeals and advise clients accordingly. Every client wants to know three things: How long will it take? How much will it cost? What can be won (reversal, new trial, remittitur, etc.) and what are the chances of success?
The lawyer's job is to answer these questions by assessing the merits of a prospective appeal based on a careful analysis of the record. With a thematically tight focus on the tools of professional case evaluation, Professional Judgment on Appeal aids the lawyer in answering the ultimate question in every case: Can this appeal succeed and on what grounds?
The second part of the book addresses mistakes and misconduct since a large and growing body of case law imposes or threatens costs, fees, and fines for willful or event-negligent misconduct by appellate counsel. The laws on frivolous appeals violations of court rules, and other forms of misconduct are also presented. The concluding chapter addresses appellate malpractice, which often arises from frivolous appeals, rules, violations, or other misconduct of the appellate lawyer.
Professional Judgment on Appeal is designed to aid students and all members of the legal profession as it builds upon, but goes far beyond, the basics taught in law school to be a useful reference for most attorneys.

Book Description
From the author of
Henry and Clara, a dazzling, hilarious novel that captures the heart and soul of New York in the Jazz Age.
Bandbox is a hugely successful magazine, a glamorous monthly cocktail of 1920s obsessions from the stock market to radio to gangland murder. Edited by the bombastic Jehoshaphat “Joe” Harris, the magazine has a masthead that includes, among many others, a grisly, alliterative crime writer; a shy but murderously determined copyboy; and a burned-out vaudeville correspondent who’s lovesick for his loyal, dewy assistant.
As the novel opens, the defection of Harris’s most ambitious protégé has plunged Bandbox into a death struggle with a new competitor on the newsstand. But there’s more to come: a sabotaged fiction contest, the NYPD vice squad, a subscriber’s kidnapping, and a film-actress cover subject who makes the heroines of Fosse’s Chicago look like the girls next door. While Harris and his magazine careen from comic crisis to make-or-break calamity, the novel races from skyscraper to speakeasy, hops a luxury train to Hollywood, and crashes a buttoned-down dinner with Calvin Coolidge.
Thomas Mallon has given us a madcap and poi-gnant book that brilliantly portrays the gaudiest American decade of them all.
Customer Reviews:
Makes you Nostalgic for a Place that Never Was.......2006-07-24
Mr. Mallon may have a few anachronisms here and there (did they really say "chatting up" in 1928?) but he captures the spirit of the Twenties spot on. The novel is plotted like a screwball comedy, part The Front Page, part His Gal Friday and part F. Scott dancing in the Plaza Fountain. All the plot lines, so disconnected at the beginning, come together like finally woven wire by the climax.
Mr. Mallon has always been a genius at historical fiction and I particularly liked his two tragic Victorian romances. There is romance here, but mostly he is out to capture an era and he succeeds brilliantly at this.
Curse with high praise.......2006-03-30
After 70-odd years of writers trying to adapt the cinematic screwball comedy to the page, Mallon has finally done it. With pitch perfect prose, and a hint of a Robert Altman ensemble, the book hits on all cylinders.
That said, few books can live up to that estimation, though I feel that this one has. Results vary as to what Preston Sturges means to you.
Not a fun read.......2005-05-24
I simply could not get into this book, even though I wanted to like it. The mishmash of characters was confusing and there was no plot line to keep me even a little bit interested. It was one of the few books that I could not finish and I certainly would not characterize it as a "fun" read - more like wordy, tedious exercise in boredom.
A fun romp of a book!.......2004-08-30
I selected this book because I love this era. While this book does not fall into the category of classic literature, it does succeed in its intended purpose: to create a fun story, replete with interesting characters (caracatures though they are) and an interesting plot. It reads like an old black and white film, where actors/actresses drop great one-liners. The author's tongue-and-cheek efforts do not go to waste. This book is a great one to discuss with friends. I definitely recommend it, but go into it with expectations of entertainment, not lofty, eloquent prose.
A clever page-turner with memorable characters.......2004-05-28
Bandbox is one of those novels that reinforces my belief that I was born about 50 years too late. It captures the New York of the Roaring 20's and the helter skelter world of magazine publishing in a way that is both funny and engrossing. Thomas Mallon may not be writing on a par with Fitzgerald or others original to the period (who can?) but he is definitely at the top of his game and it's no shame to be the Triple-A champ.
The plot fits into several genre, the most prominent being a madcap screwball and the other being somewhat of a minor mystery - will the competition succeed in shutting down Bandbox? Mallon makes deft use of every character, even though there are easily more than a dozen to keep track of, and each fits very, very neatly into the plot. That's incredibly hard to pull off and if the book wobbles a little bit in some sections, it makes up for it in others.
Mallon captures the romance of the city and the era vividly, from the socio-political events to the popular culture to the love affair that writers had and continue to have with New York. Even though we know via history's events what's coming around the corner for these characters, we care about them enough to want them to avoid the hard times and root for them against the "bad guys".
Jehosaphat "Joe" Harris is the editor of Bandbox and he seems like a combination of Harvey Weinstein and Boss Tweed. He's fighting to save his magazine from the upstart Cutaway, edited by his onetime protege Jimmy Gordon. Jimmy, who will stop at nothing to bury Bandbox, appears to have the upper hand. The suspense as to who will emerge victorious is an excellent attention-grabber as situations and circumstances get more and more out of control.
The funny thing about the book is that some of the characters and situations are cliches of the 20's, but we're so used to them they don't feel like cliches. Mallon manipulates our perceptions and stereotypes to do his job for him, which is a very clever move. It's also interesting that in reading it I couldn't help but think of what kind of film it would make. Some of the parts are ridiculously easy to cast in the imagination. Alec Baldwin, for example, is the epitome of Jimmy Gordon.
One flaw, and I've noticed this in other novels that are similar to this one, is that there is so much going on in some instances the author foreshadows what's coming a little too blatantly which takes some of the fun away from the big moments when they do occur. This is a minor criticism - it's like watching a movie when you've seen all the cliches and you know one is coming. It's probably not going to detract from the overall experience but you remember it for not being on the same level as the rest of the material.
The book reads very smoothly - probably a good two days at most - and leaves you wanting more. Thomas Mallon is going on my list of authors whose other work I am interested in reading.
