Quantum mechanics defies the imagination, we all know that. During the 1990ies a new and elegant interpretation was born (the `modal interpretation'). Philosopher-physicist P.E. Vermaas has helped to build it. In this book he investigates this interpretation very thoroughly --- the book presupposes knowledge of quantum mechanics, its relevant mathematics and a profound love for sub- and superscripts. The conclusions are however not optimistic. If some version of the modal interpretation is going to make sense of the quantum world we seem to inhabit, then it is going to be a quite complicated version.
The basic idea is to investigate under what conditions one can ascribe properties to physical systems, ie mass to an electron, position to a proton, energy to a Helium molecule, without running into contradictions with quantum mechanics itself. The good news is that this turns out to be possible to a larger extent than has generally been accepted. But as said above, the bad news is that it is going to be complicated.
Perhaps one would have expected from one of the builders of the modal interpretation a passionate defense of it --- who else is going to defend it? On the other hand, the honesty to tell bad news concerning what is partly your own intellectual offspring is laudable. Much labour has been spent in this high-level accomplishment, but little passion.
No seriously interested party can afford to ignore this book.

The monograph presents a detailed study of a class of solvable models in quantum mechanics that describe the motion of a particle in a potential having support at the positions of a discrete (finite or infinite) set of point sources. Both situations--where the strengths of the sources and their locations are precisely known and where these are only known with a given probability distribution--are covered.
The authors present a systematic mathematical approach to these models and illustrate its connections with previous heuristic derivations and computations. Results obtained by different methods in disparate contexts are thus unified and a systematic control over approximations to the models, in which the point interactions are replaced by more regular ones, is provided.
The first edition of this monograph generated considerable interest for those learning advanced mathematical topics in quantum mechanics, especially those connected to the Schrödinger equations. This second edition includes a new appendix by Pavel Exner, who has prepared a summary of the progress made in the field since 1988. His summary, centering around two-body point interaction problems, is followed by a bibliography focusing on essential developments made since 1988.

Somebody Ought to Write a Book about this Stuff.......2006-03-03
If you are military or ex-military, you have had the great joy of frantically hurrying up in order to wait forever. And while you were waiting, more often than not someone (probably more than one) told some wild stories. Many times these stories were so down right hilarious that, by the time you moved on to the next extremely important military event, your sides were aching from laughter.
After some of these eye-wateringly funny bull sessions, it was suggested that someone ought to write a book about this stuff. Well, Charles Bertram has done just that, and he has done it extraordinarily well.
Whether you are a squid, jarhead, zoomy, grunt, or whatever, you need to get a copy of this great little collection and prepare to enjoy and laugh. If you are still on active duty, you'll feel like it's an insightful, hilarious, commentary on your everyday life. If you are now playing the civilian game, it will bring back fond memories.

"Chipped Beef On Toast" is a delightfully funny book which honors veterans with a trip down memory lane through short stories.
My favorite (at least today) is "Corporal Higgins". I found the adventures of Corporal Higgins to be absolutely hilarious, while knowing that Cpl. Higgins is a real individual who served this country made it even more so. The story of Cpl. Higgins begins with him believing his has one of the best assignments any soldier can have, a clerk typist and assistant Company clerk. The adventures Cpl. Higgins ends up in are incredibly well told and in the end you will discover the laughs you have shared will have turned into lessons learned. There is a twist at the end everyone will appreciate.
This is a book for every veteran, as well as anyone who knows a veteran, will want to read. The laughs will keep you reading and shaking your head. I can't wait to read another book Charles H. Bertram has to offer. May my veteran friends, I having served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps (once a Marine, always a Marine), are eternally grateful to you, Mr. Bertam, for helping us to laugh and making us remember. Semper fi!
