One of a kind.......2000-11-01

I teach seminars to experienced bankers on risk management and corporate capital raising. This is the first, and only, book I have found which gives a real framework for understanding capital-raising choices made by corporations that is practical, rather than purely academic (which is not how decisions are made by CFOs and Treasurers, for right or for wrong!). Very highly recommended for capital raising. it ranks, in my opinion, with Charles Smithson's "Managing Financial Risk," on the risk management side, as the single best books available. It is by no means out-of-date, but it would be wonderful if it were ever updated to include "new economy" companies that often have negative EPS.

Excellent Introduction to Corporate Financial Strategy.......2000-09-03

As a classical (UK?) MBA book, Ward provides the student and professional alike with an excellent introduction to finance in a strategic context. In Part 1, he starts off with the basics including a review of theories of finance. Part 2 is probably the most interesting one. Ward goes through the four stages of a company and its financial strategy (start-up, growth company, mature company, declining business). Part 3 covers the important role of dynamic growth. Part 4 considers the impact of the opposite types of strategies which are involved in consolidating or refocusing the business. Part 5 offers an interesting and unique look at financial strategy from the perspective of the externally based, professional financial adviser (e.g. Investment Banker or Consultant).

Description:
A dynamic model is set up to explore monetary policy in the presence of asset price volatility. If the probability for the asset price to increase or decrease in the next period is taken as an exogenous variable, the monetary policy rule turns out to be a linear function of state variables. We also explore a monetary policy rule assuming that the probability for the asset price to decrease or increase can be affected by monetary policy and asset price bubbles, and find that a state-dependent monetary policy rule might arise. We further consider monetary policy with asset prices in the presence of a zero-interest-rate bound. Our study shows that a financial market depression can make a deflation and an economic recession worse, implying that policy actions aiming at escaping a liquidity trap should not ignore asset prices.

This paper investigates the components of liquidity risk that are important for understanding asset-pricing anomalies. Firm-level liquidity is decomposed into variable and fixed price effects and estimated using intraday data for the period 1983-2001. Unexpected systematic (market-wide) variations of the variable component rather than the fixed component of liquidity are shown to be priced within the context of momentum and post-earnings-announcement drift (PEAD) portfolio returns. As the variable component is typically associated with private information [e.g., Kyle, 1985. Econometrica 53, 1315-1335], the results suggest that a substantial part of momentum and PEAD returns can be viewed as compensation for the unexpected variations in the aggregate ratio of informed traders to noise traders.

I found the book very interesting, it kept me reading. I finished the book in three days, because I was always left anticipating the next scene. I must say the ending also threw me for a loop, but I was a little disappointed because I was looking for a little more detail in the conclusion. It seems that it was rushed, unless, we should expect a sequel. Overall, I was very quite pleased.

From beginning to end, this novel captured my attention as Franklin White added a Cup of Good Old-Fashioned Love with scandal, adversity and tragedy. The mix was well done, and the end result was deliciously sweet.

Cup of Love is well-written and enlightening. The drama interspersed with spirituality create a credible and interesting story of friends and family who learn that love conquers all! --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Franklin White did a great job of keeping the readers interest. I truly enjoyed the sory line and the characters. This is a must read. I also enjoyed "Fed Up With Fanny" -- check out all of his books.
