Could be better! Too few problems!.......2002-12-30

I used it for the cost accounting class and though I found it helpful, I thought that there were too few problems given in the study guide and the ones there did not really reflect on the ones in the textbook. The summaries were well written and an excellent tool for review, but I think the problems should correlate more with what is in the text. I did get A in the class, but I've seen better study guides. Accounting is all in practice, so problems are more important than the terminology.

I have used an earlier edition and thought it was great, but this one is even better. Easiy to follow and effectively packs a tremendous amount if information between the covers. It really makes a compex subject come into focus. Can't think of enough good things to say about this guide.

Great Study Guide for Cost Accounting!!!!.......2002-08-30

I used this book (a prior edition) in my cost accounting studies and I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to learn these methods at an accelerated pace. It is easy to read and comprehend and cuts through a lot of the confusion generated by less salient authors in the same discipline. I recommend this student study guide for purposes of demystifying the realm of cost accounting.

As the United States banking system enters the 1990s, the industry and its regulators face a crisis of major proportions. Successive problems have plagued various lending markets, bank failure rates have increased, and traditional regulatory techniques of risk control have proved unsuccessful. In this work, Helen A. Garten examines the current crisis in bank regulation and the regulatory response. In addition, she provides a series of recommendations for reforming the system so that regulatory failure will not occur again. Garten begins her study with a strategic view of bank regulation as a response to financial crises in the banking business. Just as the bank failures of the 1930s led to a radical shift in bank regulatory technique, recent competitive pressures and technological innovations that have lessened the profitability of the deposit-lending business are leading to a shift in regulatory strategy today. Although some deregulation has taken place, Garten contends that more significant changes are occurring in the regulation that remains. Regulators are experimenting with a new approach to risk control that will create economic incentives for banks to adopt more successful investment strategies. Garten compares these new regulatory initiatives to the disciplinary techniques of the typical corporate equityholder and shows how they differ from the debtholder's techniques of traditional post-Depression bank regulation. She concludes that the new regulatory strategy may not be enough to help the banking industry emerge from its current difficulties. This work will be an essential resource for lawyers and bankers involved with regulatory policy, as well as for economists and scholars of finance and administrative law.

Trying to save $$.......2005-05-05

This is a comprehensive geology book with good graphics that illustrate hard to understand concepts. This edition is almost exactly the same as the 2003 fourht edition. However be aware that the chapters are in a different order in the third edition

Excellent Introductory Undergraduate Geology Textbook.......2001-12-20

The textbook is very well written and beautifully and effectively illustrated. Critical topics, especially plate tectonics, are thoroughly discussed. The review questions at the end of the chapters are very useful for recitations and laboratories. The glossary is also helpful, but not all bolded terms in the text (such as theory and hypothesis) are located in the glossary. The appendices include mineral identification tables, unit conversions, and information on topographic and geologic maps. The third edition has been extensively reorganized and most of the changes are definite improvements of an already superior textbook. One negative point: one of my students had a malfunctioning CD in her copy of the third edition.

A nice casual book!.......1999-10-02

I took a base-level intro course on geology and we used this book, and I found it to be very straight forward and casual. The soft cover was durable and easy to manipulate....which means a lot when you have to make the most of minimal space!

Every time lightning strikes in Lewis Nordan's novel, strange things happen. Lightning strikes, and an old man dies; lightning strikes again and he comes back to life; love affairs begin and end amid the perilous crackle of electrical storms. Young Leroy Dearman inhabits a flat, Mississippi landscape punctuated by singing llamas, wild dogs, and his own eccentric family members: a grandfather who drinks poison, a mother obsessed with the kidnapped Italian politician Aldo Moro, an uncle who seduces his mother, and a father infatuated with an Indian maiden. Leroy himself is tortured by erotic fantasies involving a buxom high school baton twirler. His torment is hardly eased when he discovers his uncle's cache of skin magazines. When the baton-twirling Circe finally makes Leroy's dreams come true lightning strikes.

All of this could become a cartoon version of rural Southern life in the hands of a less accomplished writer. But Lewis Nordan hits all the right notes in Lightning Song, delving beneath surface eccentricity to expose the loneliness, the confusion, and the longing for love that dwell in the heart of every character. Funny and sad, its atmosphere as emotionally charged as the air just before a thunderstorm, Lightning Song is a rare and wonderful read.

Leroy Dearman is twelve, and he lives on a llama farm in Mississippi. Life is perfect. It's true that his grandfather just died in the attic and that wild dogs kill a baby llama now and then, and it's true that one little sister curses him and the other one wets her pants. But up to the day Uncle Harris moves in, life looks like it's right out of a Walt Disney movie. No wonder the llamas greet each morning with a song. Uncle Harris arrives in a sports car, full of funny stories and new ideas. He manages to persuade Leroy's straitlaced parents to join him for cocktails in the evening. He sets up a pretty grand bachelor pad in the Dearman attic, with a telephone, a TV set, and a stack of Playboy magazines. He is, you might say, Romance itself. Once Uncle Harris moves in, life on the llama farm takes on an entirely different flavor. Leroy discovers those magazines. Electricity fills the Dearman house. Equilibrium tilts, conversation trails off, the atmospheric pressure twists--and lightning strikes. Leroy starts seeing things he's never seen before, like the very gifted baton-twirling teacher, and his world changes forever. Not since PORTNOY'S COMPLAINT has a novel looked so directly, hilariously, and bittersweetly at the heartbreak of puberty.

Our erstwhile narrator, Leroy Dearman, is twelve years old and lives on a llama farm in Mississippi with this tee totaling parents and younger sisters. The story opens with Leroy sneaking into the attic to get a gander of his Uncle Harris's nudie mags. When he sees a picture of a woman without clothes, he believes she'd been tricked by the photographer into getting dressed in clothes way to small for her and then having her picture taken without her knowledge.

Leroy and his family lead a pretty ordinary llama farming life, until Uncle Harris shows up in his sportscar. Well, there was that one incident where his grandfather passed away in the attic. Leroy tried CPR and brought the old man back to life. At least he thought he had as he left the attic. However the old geezer was shortly discovered deader than a doornail. Anyway the attic was empty now, so when Harris's wife kicked him out, it was the perfect place for him.

Uncle Harris brings glamour and excitement into Leroy's life, into everybody's life. Every night he has a little party with what he calls grog rations (a different alcoholic drink every day). Swami Don (Leroy's father) does not partake, but his wife does. Everybody, except maybe Swami Don, is captivated by this freeloader.

Leroy both loves and hates his parents, like a typical twelve year old. He adores his mother when they listen to the song of the llamas at sunrise together, but hates her when he sees her kissing Uncle Harris behind his father's back. Swami Don has a bad arm and behaves like he's living a hundred years in the past, however he's a wonderful father, mostly.

Then there are the new people, a couple that has moved in down the way. They like to play dress up, talk in funny accents and they befriend Leroy when he needs one. They irritate the heck out of Swami Don, as they seem to see through a marriage and a family that is falling apart.

And lastly there is that illusive character in the story, the lightning. Somehow, in a totally believable way, it's responsible for healing wounds, righting wrongs, and putting the family back together again in this cracking good story full of laughs and tears, wit and charm and characters that were dancing around in my brain long after I finished the book.

Excellent reading. Touches the southern thing well, creates a great story line, and well worth the read. I hope to read other books by Nordan.

Nordan's Prose Almost Forks Lightning.......2000-08-12

Lightning Song has one of the world's funniest seduction scenes. Nordan's prose is funny, brisk and authentic, but I felt a little "had" by what seemed the staged eccentricities of the characters and the situations, which bordered on the formulaic Southern Gothic. Still, I got caught up in the story toward the end and did finally buy into it. I just wish I felt like Nordan was writing from deep within his heart. But he is so good, it's worth the read.

Haunting and beautiful.......2000-07-13

The plot of this book is a minimalist coming-of-age story. The novel's great strength lies in the strength of the writing: Nordan can make a trip to the store sound Homeric. The individual episodes vary in quality, but at Nordan's finest he writes as movingly as anyone alive.

This novel starts and ends well, but it's tedious in the middle. Somewhat plotless and episodic; the characters are eccentric enough, though, to make it interesting.
