Go hide in a cave, put all your money in US government bills, bonds, and hord gold and wait for the financial nuclear winter to clear up. There..., now you don't need to buy this book.
This book originally came out at about March 2003, at the end of the recent bear market, and was titled "Crash Profits..." at that time.
The whole financial world did not end and the book was retitled to "Investing Without Fear...." so that more copies can be sold.
Weiss is like a broken clock, always predicting that one thing or another is about to crash. He has been wrong so often. Even a broken clock is right twice in any given 24 hour period.

Weiss is a Huckster.......2005-05-17

This arrogant self-promoter acts like he's right and everyone else is wrong. He's be justified in acting that way if he were right. But he's wrong at least as often. He tries to scare people into buying his books, his newsletter, and (worst of all) his high-priced "trading services". He called for a real estate crash in 2003, a bond crash in 2004, and he's called for a stock crash every year for the past decade.

Misleading title, but story interesting in the beginning.......2004-05-07

The title of the book is probably the most misleading one I have come across for a while, as it has nothing to do with the books contents. The cover would have you think this is a book about how to make money and give you the strategies promised on the back cover. It isn't. It is a storyline about a CEO and some friends who get caught up in some financial tricks and end up blowing the whistle in a financial thinktank called CECAR. It is designed to be a lesson in macro and micro economics. The problem is that the story is interesting at the start, but drags on and on with the unplausible existence of the thinktank (as no-one would fund such a thing) that grows in size, profile and importance to the point where there is a meeting with the US President. Get the drift ? I read all but the last 40 or so pages. My recommendation is not to buy this unless you want a few pages of an interesting story on how financial cover-ups can work.

Crash Profits.......2003-07-06

Truly a worthless book written by someone who has little insight into how the capital markets really work. Comments on high yield bond and guidance about which stock in your portfolio to sell demonstrated that the author is devoid to any true investment knowledge. My credentials to make the judgments: Certified Financial Planner, MBA Degree, fee based financial advisor.

1 star is too generous.......2003-05-05

By way of explanation, I read an excerpt from this book in a popular tout sheet and bought it merely to pad my order to get to the free shipping level. What a mistake. (The lesson here is to just pay your shipping charge and be done with it).
My own personal view of the equity markets is one of a longer term secular bear market and Iýve been trading options for a number of years so I should be sympathetic to Weissý thesis. However, all of Weissý insight in this area is summarized in 15 rules covering 4-1/2 pages. While mostly accurate, there are some glaring errors, e.g. Rules 3 and 4 advising you to avoid contracts of a certain price range. Option prices are based on the cost of the underlying shares so to avoid contracts over $500 is to limit yourself from companies with high share prices with potentially the most room to fall.
Perhaps I was expecting him to elaborate on some other bear option strategies, but all he offers is buying puts. As for directly short-selling (the only other way to benefit from ýcrashý markets) all he says is ýdonýt do itý. He fails to sufficiently describe the time decay problem with long options in his 15 rules. E.g. with respect to the interminable Japanese bear market, simply long puts may not have made you any money because of the graceful but inexorable decline punctuated with sharp rallies. You would have needed a bear-neutral strategy. The problem is that with a preponderance of contracts at a certain strike, the market makers may ride the underlying shares past the expiry so that they all close worthless.
The rest of the book recounts recent financial scandals such as the $6k shower curtain, but I found myself skipping over several chapters at a time because Iým one of those odd people who remembers what they read in the paper or saw in the news.
There were some odd chapters on real estate and moving your money to a safe bank, which suddenly struck me as the same stuff Prof. Ravi Batra was writing in the 80ýs (to wit ýThe Great Recession of the 90ýsý!). To his credit, Batra caught the ýGreat Recessioný of 1991 (as did your local evening news) but by 1992, the stuff was all nonsense.
Could anyone benefit from this book?
Those interested in the subject would probably already be in the bear camp, but the book is insufficient as an introduction to options trading so there is little practical value. And those unfamiliar with his filler material probably donýt read the newspaper, so why would they read a book?

For any practical benefit, this book should have been published 3 years ago. So perhaps publication now is actually a contrarian indicator?
BTW some of the rave reviews are just bizarre, one guy recommending "9 Free Secrets of New Sensual Power" in the same breath. I canýt comment on that selection, but if youýre trying to pad your order to get free shipping, that is probably a better choice.

This is in important publication in view of current pest introductions and eradication programs. This book serves as an invaluable resource to outline the biological significance of exotic pests as well as issues regarding public policy of eradication efforts. Failures and successes are discussed.

In 2000 we are revisiting many of these issues- the citrus canker eradication effort in Florida took 30 years... and now we are battling another infestation of this devastating plant disease. Fire ant has spread to California. Repeated infestations of exotic fruit flies are found in the US.

Dahlstein and Garcia's compilation of case histories can help the general public, eradication and regulatory personnel, policy makers and scientists to understand issues and concerns that also apply to our current problems.

That most of the world's environments are in bad shape is by now well known. Surprisingly optimistic!.......2000-06-01

I hadn't expected this book to focus so tightly on global warming, and particularly on the role of carbon dioxide therein, but nevertheless it held my interest and left me full of hope. It has solid suggestions for ways in which of each of us can flex our consumer muscles to reduce unnecessary energy use, and also lays out a larger strategy that we can use for a national blueprint.

The really good news is that this book makes clear that we already KNOW how to reduce our greenhouse emissions (thereby helping our planet and ourselves), keep our economy strong while we do it, and continue to be a world technological leader to boot. The only thing standing in our way is a group of people (a large, politically powerful group of people!) who feel that their short-term profits from fossil fuels matter more than the health of ourselves, our descendants, and all the other people on the planet.

I hope that this book gets a broad readership; it deserves it. We all deserve to hear this message and start moving toward a cleaner world.

Not a bad book but not what I expected.......2000-05-04

If you are looking to buy a car, buy gasoline, or own a home...maybe this book is good for you. I found that the majority of the book was only a high level overview of the environmental situation with few advice on what a person can do to make a difference. From the title, and the discription I was led to believe that I would read something that I could do in order to help, but instead the advice was only for those owning a home and a car- which I do neither (Bike power is better than owning a car anyway! :) )

Its not an expensive book, but I personally would return it, or give it away,...I didn't really learn anything new at all- except the last chapter where the author goes into detail about the GCC -Global Climate Coalition - which I previously hadn't heard of. This was really the only new thing that I learned- not worth the (...) for 3 pages of new info.

I am presently looking for a better environmental book which gives me ideas for little things I can do day to day in order to help the earth.

Concise and constructive!.......2000-04-18

Of late I've been looking for some clarity, simplicity and guidance on what kind of shape our environment is in and on what you and I and the companies we work for, or partronize, can do to preserve and improve that environment. I believe Denis Hayes got it in one.

He starts with a brief review of the state of the environment (not great, folks!), with a focus on global warming, major national policy decisions and international efforts of the last decade. He then moves on to identify energy sources to get rid of and general technology developments that we deparately need to support for the future.

Following these bigger industry issues, he then gives some simple suggestions on how to make our own lives more energy efficient and earth friendly - in the near term, and for the long haul. Very helpful - I've followed three!

As a finale, Hayes circles back to the initial discussion of global warming & climate change and comments on how many major industries do NOT have a strong interest in our improving our energy efficiency, but the exact opposite. This reminder gives new insight into any media coverage on this issue.

So, whether you are convinced about global warming or not, this book offers the average person some constructive suggestions for helping to reduce waste and pollution. And, hey, you might help keep the planet cooler, too.

The first volume of this two volume set provides a first rate, readable and fairly complete introduction to stochastic processes by one of the main experts in the field. Notable, however, is that 'Stratonovich calculus' is not presented, which is just as well because Ito calculus is used nearly universally in finance theory now. Implicit conditions for an approach to equilibrium are presented via eigenfunction expansions, but the reader should take care to notice that when the spectrum becomes continuous then there is no stationary limit, in spite of the fact that the stationary distribution still appears in the expansion with vanishing eigenvalue. Nonstationary processes are discussed later in the text, but the reader should pay attention that the integrals (4.67) required for the existence of the spectral density (4.66) do not exist (are infinite) whenever the process is nonstationary, which includes most cases of practical interest (for a Wiener process, e.g.). I emphasize this because financial math texts often toss bones to the idea of 'equilibrium conditions' and then discuss processes that are only nonstationary with no stationary limit (the Osborne-Black-Scholes lognormal model, e.g.).

This book is highly recommended for physics and engineering students, as well as for students of economics and finance.

Note added in 2/2007: this is nearly the only text out there that distinguishes stationary from nonstationary increments. That topic is, in a nutshell, by far the most important idea for analyzing data correctly and for classifying stochastic proceses theoretically. I've looked at more 'modern' books like Risken and Gardiner and am left cold: I refer to Stratonovich and Wax (the Wang-Uhlenbeck paper) extremely often, they're my bibles, I also find Genedenko to be very helpful. I should have given this text 5 stars!

A wonderful book.........1999-03-10

This book is for children of all ages..parents who are children and grandparents who are also children. If you are not a resident of Montana, take the trip to the "BIG SKY COUNTRY", travel the roads and see where the story began and where it finished. It will be worth you time.

This book is a classic.......1998-07-18

A story of a teenager growing up in Great Falls Montana who comes across an abandoned greyhound and his companion cagey male Canadian Goose. The story is hilarious, especially at the end where the dog catches the rabbit at the racetrack, and rips it to shreds (during a race) and the goose manages to create chaos with the other dogs. The greyhound inspires the teenager to train hard as a track star. I enjoyed the book immensely.

A great coming of age story........1998-06-30

I first read this book about 20 years ago. I recently found it and re-read it. I'm keeping it in my sons room for when he's old enough to read. It's a great story that teaches right from wrong, good versus evil, and about life and death. It does contain a couple hunting sequences.
