    Book Description

This book offers an advanced introduction to the models of credit risk valuation. It concentrates on firm-value and reduced-form approaches and their applications in practice. Additionally, the book includes new models for valuing derivative securities with credit risk, focussing on options and forward contracts subject to counterparty default risk, but also treating options on credit-risky bonds and credit derivatives. The text provides detailed descriptions of the state-of-the-art martingale methods and advanced numerical implementations based on multi-variate trees used to price derivative credit risk. Numerical examples illustrate the effects of credit risk on the prices of financial derivatives.

3 out of 5 stars A revised version is needed.......2005-07-21

The book looks neat at first sight and I like its style and organization, suitable for an elementary course in credit risk. But there are so many mistakes in the book, say, pages 28, 49, etc... Those mistakes can be easily avoided by a more careful reading through. In addition, there are few real life examples in the book.

A 3rd edition is definitely needed.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on credit risk valuation.......2002-04-25

This is probably still the best book on the valuation of credit risk. It is concise, rigorous, yet with many examples and a good treatment of implementation issues.

5 out of 5 stars Very valuable resource.......2001-11-03

This book discusses credit risk valuation in detail and quantitatively. The book is very strong on counterparty credit risk of derivatives. That is really the focus, though it also has stuff on general credit risk and credit derivatives (I wish it had more on credit derivatives). It also offers a chapter on general option pricing and risk-neutral valuation principles (brief but very good). What I also liked was the appendix with a short description of the more important and more advanced mathematical concepts used in the book. Although (or perhaps because) not an easy read but rather terse and demanding, I found it to be an extremely valuable resource. It really helped me understand the subject matter and gave me a good idea of how to model such risks.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely innovative book.......2001-08-26

This is an extremely innovative book on counterparty risk, not your standard lame textbook full of old stuff that everybody knows already. Focus is counterparty risk of derivatives but it also has some stuff on credit derivatives. The best part are clearly the chapters on counterparty risk. Now, this book is written for people with a strong math background; it is not an easy read. But for the few out there interested in counterparty risk and quantitative modeling techniques like me, this is a gem.

5 out of 5 stars Ahead of the state of the art in counterparty risk valuation.......1999-08-26

This books presents the latest research in counterparty risk pricing. As my company (one of the major securities firms here in New York) is currently looking to implement counterparty risk pricing models, this book was just what I was look-ing for. It consists of one chapter on derivatives pricing (Black/Scholes, Heath/Jarrow/Morton, etc etc, all in there), one chapter on general credit risk pricing, two chapters on the valuation of counterparty credit risk (the real core of the book), one chapter on credit derivatives (somewhat short). If you are interested in counterparty risk pricing or need to implement such models, look no further than chapter 4 and 5 of this book. A word of caution, though: while this book is no doubt a wonderful find for the mathematically gifted, it is definitely not for the faint of heart. It is clearly targeted towards researchers and practitioners with advanced mathematical and modeling skills. If your mathematical background topped out with an MBA statistics course, you will choke on this book. Otherwise, and if you are interested in counterparty risk pricing of derivatives, you'll find this book to be a highly valuable resource.

5 out of 5 stars Stock Investing Finally Explained.......2005-02-01

This book is simply great. After trudging through a myriad of online 'help' sites, I came to the conclusion that I needed to start at the beginning. That's where this book shines. If you really have no idea what stock investing is all about, this book explains the how and why from step one. The author goes further than simple stock trading basics to cover the bigger picture. He covers all aspects of financial planning in a very big way. I highly recommend this to the person who is wondering what all those tickers mean at the bottom of the news screen.

                                  Description:
Carbon isotope ratio of early diagenetic carbonate cement (EDCC) from sandstones was measured from Mohand Rao (age: 9 to 4.5 Ma) and Haripur Khol (6 to 1.8 Ma) sections of Siwalik Group of India to reconstruct palaeovegetation. The @d^1^3C of cement from Mohand Rao section varies from -10.5%% to -0.2%% with progressive increase in values from 9 to 7.3 Ma indicating gradual change of existing C"3 type vegetation to C"4 type vegetation. Post 7.3 Ma, the @d^1^3C value is anchored around zero per mil indicating mixed C"3-C"4 environment with C"4 dominating the ecosystem. In Haripur Khol section, the @d^1^3C value of EDCC from sandstone indicates presence of both C"3 and C"4 type of plants with dominance of C"4 in the ecosystem, which corroborates the results of our previous study based on carbon isotope ratio of soil carbonates. The oxygen isotope ratio of EDCC from sandstones does not show any systematic variation with time. The @d^1^8O values of EDCC from Mohand Rao section ranges from -8.9%% to -13.6%% and in Haripur Khol section, from -9.9%% to -13.6%%. At a given stratigraphic level, the average @d^1^8O value of EDCC of sandstones is lower (up to 4%%) compared to the average @d^1^8O of soil carbonate from the same or adjacent level (using our earlier published data from Haripur Khol section). The depletion in ^1^8O of EDCC may be due to contribution of contemporary river water infiltrating the groundwater system in the post-monsoon period. Carbon and oxygen isotope ratio of soil carbonate nodules and carbon isotope ratio of associated organic matter from the same nodules were also measured from the Mohand Rao section in a few cases (n=9). From 9 to 8 Ma, the carbon isotope ratio of soil carbonates varies from -10.8%% to -7.8%% indicating dominance of C"3 type vegetation in the flood plain. In contrast, from 5.4 to 4.8 Ma, the @d^1^3C ranges from 0.1%% to -4.3%% indicating that the vegetation consisted of mixed C"3-C"4 plants with C"4 dominating the ecosystem. The carbon isotope ratio of the organic matter from the same soil carbonate nodules ranges from -25.2%% to -24.4%% (from 9 to 8 Ma) and -17.4%% to -24.6%% (from 5.4 to 4.8 Ma) corroborating the above results. The average @d^1^8O value of soil carbonate nodules for the time period 9 to 8 Ma is -8.8%%; for 5.4 to 4.8 Ma, the value is -7.9%%. These average @d^1^8O values are comparable with previously published oxygen isotope results of soil carbonates from Haripur Khol and Kangra valley. a valley.

                                    Description:
Process design for a 15 mgd (2370 m^3/h) reverse osmosis (RO) plant in El Paso, Texas, in the desert area of the US southwest presents many challenges. High recoveries in the pilot plant were limited by silica and barium sulfate scaling. Following testing at 85-90% recovery using a silica polymerization inhibitor and antiscalant, the disposal of a projected 2.1 mgd (332 m^3/h) of an unstable supersaturated RO concentrate presents a significant problem. While deepwell and evaporative disposal alternatives are being considered, a pilot program towards a zero liquid discharge process to recover more water and perhaps useful by-products has progressed with very encouraging results. We report here our initial results, attaining a further recovery of 70% of water, and the production from a lime-softening step of sludge with high silica content, and promise as a useful road-base and embankment materials additive.

                                      Description:
A thin cemented sandstone bed in the Upper Albian Dakota Formation of southeastern Nebraska contains the first dinosaur tracks to be described from the state. Of equal importance to the tracks are stable-isotope (C, O) analyses of cements in the track bed, especially in the context of data derived from generally correlative strata (sandstones and sphaerosiderite-bearing paleosols) in the region. These data provide the framework for interpretations of paleoenvironmental conditions, as well as a novel approach to understanding mechanisms of terrestrial vertebrate track preservation. High minus-cement-porosity (>47%) and low grain-to-grain contacts (~2.5) in the track bed indicate early (pre-compaction) lithification. Although phreatic cements dominate, the history of cementation within this stratigraphic interval is complex. Cathodoluminescence petrography reveals two distinct calcite zones in the track-bearing horizon and four cement zones in stratigraphically equivalent strata from a nearby section. The earliest calcite cements from both localities are likely coeval because they exhibit identical positive covariant trends (@d^1^8O values of -9.89 to -6.32%% and @d^1^3C values of -28.01 to -19.33%% VPDB) and record mixing of brackish and meteoric groundwaters. All other calcite cements define meteoric calcite lines with @d^1^8O values clustering around -9.42%% and -8.21%% VPDB from the track-bearing horizon, and -7.74%%, -5.81%%, and -3.95%% VPDB from the neighboring section. Distinct meteoric sphaerosiderite lines from roughly correlative paleosols serve as a proxy for locally recharged groundwaters. Back-calculated paleogroundwater @d^1^8O estimates from paleosol sphaerosiderites range from -7.4 to -4.2%% SMOW; whereas, meteoric calcite lines from the track horizon are generally more depleted. Differences in cement @d^1^8O values record changes in paleogroundwater recharge areas over time. Early calcite cements indicate mixing of fresh and brackish groundwaters during the syndepositional lithification of the track horizon. Later calcite cements, however, indicate recharge from a larger catchment basin that extended far inland. Therefore, the cements likely record a rise and subsequent fall in relative sea level. We conclude that scrutiny of the cement isotope geochemistry of genetically significant surfaces, especially track beds, can provide new data for interpreting sea level change.
