Excellent Discussion of Important Topic.......2006-12-03
Dr. McKee's Earnings Management offers a great deal of insight into a highly controversial topic within the realm of accounting. The first third of this book explains the difference between ethical earnings management practices and fraudulent financial reporting. He points out that Generally Accepted Accounting Principles offer multiple opportunities for legal and ethical earning management and points out the benefits of such practices. An especially interesting section provides a model that can be used to measure the bankruptcy probability of a company based upon recent financial performance. Dr. McKee shows how the use of earnings management techniques can significantly reduce financial distress and legitimately strengthen shareholder confidence.
The final two thirds of the book includes specific examples of earnings management techniques used by various public companies in recent years. His explanations of these techniques are thorough, yet at the same time not overly-technical. The writing is straightforward and you will not need to be a CPA in order to understand exactly how your company can take advantage of these earning management practices.
This book is geared toward those involved in the management of public companies; however, I believe it will appeal to a much wider group of readers. It provides information that is useful to all users of financial statements. The ideas contained within it would be useful to CEOs and CFOs, but also to shareholders and creditors, auditors and financial reporting managers, really anyone with an interest in the accounting practices of both public and privately-held companies. As a banker in the US and EU credit card servces I was *really* just stupified at how *very* bad this book is.
This book having just been published as you will note, I was expecting some very insightful writing/commnetary along with the research (which was all based on mid-to-late 1990's - so nothing new.) I have written White Papers and Blue Papers that had more content and insight.
This book is just rambling garbage - nothing more. Want a copy? I'll send you mine for free and *I* will pay the shipping within the US.

There's not a whole lot if anything to recommend about "Cherries In The Snow" by Emma Forrest. It's really a big snore. The situations are uninteresting, the conversations between characters are stilted and disjointed and the conflicts are dull. The characters themselves are woefully underdeveloped, especially that of Marley, protagonist Sadie Steinberg's boyfriend. He is so sappy, bland and, despite Sadie's description of him possessing black hair, brown eyes and brown skin he seems colorless. Who is this guy? What makes him tick? And why on Earth does he love Sadie, who is so shallow and annoying? Their relationship is completely unbelievable. So too unbelievable is Marley's young daughter Montana. Author Forrest would seem never to have encountered an eight-year old girl, so unrealistic and fake is this character. Really, the whole book is a mess. How did this book ever get published?

every character in this book is a cliche. if a book has no plot, no wit and no heart then i'm still happy to read it for its insight into human nature, but this writer offers nothing. i imagine she'd be better off writing movies for lifetime TV than attempting novels. of course, she might only manage to crank out one of these lame sex and shopping storylines before she ran out of ideas.
Sadie Steinberg Is A Gem!.......2006-03-28
Sadie Steinberg is a transplanted Brit living in New York City, with the fun job of naming new products for an edgy cosmetic company. She's also one of the most endearing heroines of the chick lit genre. She's goofy and childish and occasionally, even gross, but she totally captures your imagination and you wish you really knew someone like her.
Cherries in the Snow will stay in your mind long after you've read the last page. I loved it, and I've just bought my own copy so I will be able to read it over and over after I've returned the library's copy that I just read. It's a keeper. And if Emma Forrest is reading this--please give us another Sadie Steinberg story!
What Brilliant writing style.......2006-03-28
I was pretty engossed in this novel from the Get-go! That doesn't happen that often for me. But I just love the author's style of writing & highly reccomend this brilliant & edgy book..
Ms. Forrest Never Fails..........2005-08-25
...to impress me. I think I actually read this book in record time. I bought it to have something there to read in case I got bored, but I couldn't put it down! True to previous characters, Sadie is confused and in love. Actually, she's confused about being in love. She is a complex character that never holds her tongue. She has issues with men, and an awkward relationship with her father.
The only downside is that "Cherries in the Snow" didn't have much of a plot. I mean, you wanted to see how Sadie's relationship would unfold...but that's it. What makes this book so great is Ms. Forrest's sharp writing and witty one-liners that entertain.
