Book Description
Central and Eastern European countries have built up financial systems adapted to market economies. The stability and efficiency of these systems are essential to their economic development and competitiveness. Many of the countries are also EU accession countries in the process of transforming their legal and institutional infrastructure towards Western European standards. Most of the accession countries are aiming at becoming EMU-members and want to replace their currencies by the Euro within a few years.
Among the topics analyzed in this book are:
* The efficiency of domestic financial institutions in comparison to the efficiency of foreign institutions.
* The penetration of foreign banks and the formation of cross-border financial groups.
* The implications of financial integration for capital movements and financial stability.
This book contains contributions from high ranking officials in Central Banks, supervisory institutions, and International organizations, and by academic specializing in the functioning of financial institutions and markets. It provides valuable insights to bankers, politicians, market analysts, as well as to more general readers.

Book Description
Because earthworms improve soil quality, enhance nutrient release and uptake, and maintain and increase soil aeration and drainage, their use in testing has been central to both soil ecology and ecotoxicological risk assessment. After meeting in 1991 to discuss lab and field testing, these expert authors reconvened in 1997 to update their findings and share new insights about bioavailability and internal load as discriminating factors for assessing environmental impacts.
This 31-chapter volume also covers models that estimate the long-term implications that impacts of toxic compounds on individuals have for population survival.

Description:
The term 'critical body residue' (CBR) was defined as the lowest observed total body concentration of a contaminant in an organism, which is associated with the occurrence of adverse toxic effects in either individuals or populations of a defined age or stage of development. In this study, internal toxicity thresholds were determined for copper in the clitellated adult stage of earthworms (Lumbricus rubellus and Aporrectodea caliginosa). The objective was to assess the applicability of CBRs as a practical tool in soil quality assessment of contaminated sites and as a means of a sustainable protection of earthworm fauna. Laboratory studies showed that body concentrations of Cu were generally in agreement with the chemically available CaCl"2-extractable fraction in soil, but that there was also some evidence of internal pH-related homeostatic regulation. Toxicological correlates of body Cu concentrations with adverse effects on cocoon production (fecundity) suggested an approximate sublethal internal threshold of about 40mgkg^-^1, with mortality occurring at about 60mgkg^-^1. Adult L. rubellus sampled from areas with a wide range of metal pollution showed body Cu concentrations with a minimum of 8mgkg^-^1 and a maximum of 60mgkg^-^1. Beyond this apparent physiological tolerance range, environmental management directed at optimal earthworm population survival may not be sustainable in contaminated fields. Studies of L. rubellus colonizing a metal-contaminated experimental sludge-treated field showed that a reduced rate of colonization can already be associated with an average body Cu concentration of 25mgkg^-^1. However, in this particular field situation mixture effects of other metals that were also present in the soil and the occurrence of avoidance behaviour during colonization may have contributed to this low internal toxicity threshold. It is concluded that the CBR approach seems to be a feasible option for use as a tool in a bioavailability-based soil quality assessment, even for essential trace metals like copper, but that further insight may be needed to establish the uncertainty and reliability of the application in environmental quality assessment and decision making.

Description:
Earthworms in pastureland may be exposed to residues of veterinary medicines excreted in the faeces of treated cattle. Possible sub-lethal effects of these drugs on life history characteristics are critical to earthworm populations, but there are no internationally accepted guidelines for the laboratory testing that is essential as a supplement to field studies. In the laboratory, Lumbricus terrestris were kept in artificial soil and offered dung collected from cattle with sustained-release boluses of ivermectin or fenbendazole, or from untreated cattle (control). Earthworms were therefore exposed to drug residues in concentrations excreted naturally by treated cattle. Furthermore, worms were exposed to the drug in the natural way, i.e. by ingestion. A matrix model based on survival and reproductive rates as functions of life-stages was used to quantify the population dynamics of L. terrestris. There were no adverse effects of either ivermectin or fenbendazole on the individual survival and growth of L. terrestris. Mature worms produced on average 2-3 cocoons per worm per month irrespective of drug treatment, and about 50% of these cocoons hatched successfully. The median time to hatching (incubation time) depended on the age of the parent worms and was significantly lower for cocoons in the ivermectin group compared to controls, as the worms became older. The incubation time varied considerably in all groups; even within a batch of cocoons produced during 1 month by one pair of worms, the period sometimes varied by more than 1 year. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r~0.0044 d^-^1) was not affected by either drug treatment. The methods and the model developed in this study are suitable for long-term studies on L. terrestris and give ecologically relevant information on population dynamics. There were no negative effects of ivermectin and fenbendazole on life history characteristics of L. terrestris and it is unlikely that earthworm populations will be affected in the field following normal use of sustained-release boluses in cattle. Finally, the matrix model points to adult survival rate and cocoon viability as the most important variables to be included in future ecotoxicological tests on L. terrestris.

Description:
A study on the widespread earthworm Dendrobaena octaedra was conducted to determine which individual life history traits were the most sensitive to copper and to determine the contribution of changes in individual traits to changes in the population growth rate (@l). The study showed that the effect of copper on population growth rate mirrored the effects seen on growth, maturation and reproductive output, with stimulation at the lowest concentrations and inhibition at the highest concentration. A decomposition analysis showed that the mean change in @l was mainly driven by time between consecutive cocoon productions, except at the highest copper concentration (200mg/kg dry soil) where decreased production of fertile cocoons also contributed to the reductions in @l. The highest population growth rate (@l=1.18week^-^1) occurred at 80mg Cu/kg dry soil. At higher concentrations @l became gradually smaller, and was almost 1week^-^1 (where no population increase or decrease occurs) at the highest exposure concentration of 200mg Cu/kg dry soil suggesting that extinction would occur if a population of D. octaedra were to be exposed to copper concentrations only slightly higher than this level.

Book Description
The global environment is changing rapidly under the impact of human activities. An important element in this change is related to global climate modification. Experts from the natural and social sciences with a strong interest in history discussed common topics of great interest to society. Can the study of climate and history help in devising strategies for coping with this change? What might be the type of information most useful in this context? What are the pitfalls awaiting the unwary? These and similar questions were discussed during a four-day workshop. The resulting proceedings contain comprehensive papers of broad interest, thematic back-ground papers and reports of study groups. Apart from scientists, the papers should interest graduate students and lecturers.

Book Description
From the last decade of Paulis life, more than 2000 of his letters have survived. Together they represent a remarkable contribution to the history of post-war physics. In addition to discussing questions of physics they provide illuminating insights into debates on the philosophical and human components of the history of science. This part of Volume IV contains scientific correspondence on foundational and other general problems of physics in the 1950s: elementary particles, epistemology, and quantum field theory. In particular, one can clearly trace the development of the early quantum field theory. Generous annotations and commentary accompany the letters, which are ordered chronologically and listed in registers and an index for easy access.
Book Description
An important, shrewd, and laugh-out-loud funny debut novel that answers the question: What happens when Bridget Jones or the Sex and the City girls get married and have babies? Nothing prepared Amanda Bright for this: not her elite college degree, not her brainy friends, not her mother the feminist heroine. At age 35, she finds herself at home with two children, mopping spills and singing 'The Itsy Bitsy Spider' again and again. It doesn't help that her husband's face is all over television, or that her best friend is dating a billionaire, or that every woman she knows seems to have a plastic surgeon and a decorator. While everyone else is racing up the ladder, it's getting hard for Amanda to remember why she left work in the first place. Set amidst the glamour and power of Washington, DC, AMANDA BRIGHT@HOME is a novel about status, ambition, marriage, jealousy-and a woman's struggle to discover the things that matter most. Mothers everywhere will laugh and cry with Amanda as she tries to make sense of her life-and discovers that success isn't always measured in the workplace.
Customer Reviews:
Point of view from the Mommy Wars.......2007-09-19
Set in Washington D.C., Amanda Bright is a stay at home Mom who is conflicted about her decision to leave work and raise the kiddies. This is one of the most miserable characters I have ever read of in a novel. Jeez, as I was reading, I thought to myself, 'Develop a backbone! Stop whining and do something!'
If you read the dustcover, the summary implies this story is 'hilarious.' It is nothing of the sort. For example, the character Amanda compares the DC mommies to broodmares. Well, I didn't find that funny. The comparison was very heavy handed.
I hated the Amanda's epihphany moment at the end of the book. I felt lectured. I read this book and I want to write an Anti-Amanda character.
I cannot recommend this book. One would be better off with a book from Jennifer Weiner.
Not So Much Fluff.......2007-06-23
It looked like fluffy mommy-lit. For the same reason as mentioned above, I chose this book this week. It is NOT fluffy. At all. At least, it didn't feel fluffy to me. But, it also wasn't deep and beautiful, like my favorite non-fluff reads. It was... well... stressful. Amanda Bright is a stay at home mom to 2 children. Her husband works for the Justice Department. They don't make much money but send their children to a ritzy private school, where Amanda tries to fit in with the other moms. I could relate, somewhat, because in groups of Mommies, I am often the one with the smallest house, un-manicured fingernails, and cheaper clothing. Sometimes it bothers me, and sometimes it doesn't. However, I had trouble sympathizing with her need to send her 3 and 5 year old kids to this ritzy preschool. If they didn't have the money for it, then why send them? Especially the 3 year old. Find a cheaper Mom's Day Out type program or something. I dunno... That is just me. Anyhow, Amanda's family is thrust into the limelight in a bittersweet scandal, and the book follows this situation. Some of Amanda's musings on womanhood and motherhood were well-written and relatable. I should have written them down, so I could share them here. Some of her ideas didn't float with me, however. I am just not much of a "feminist." At least, not in the world's definition of the word. By the end, Amanda has some realizations that are good for she and her family. I won't share them. I will say that the ending wrapped up a bit too neatly for me. But, then, I might have complained if there hadn't been a happy ending. So, I guess it's fine. If you are struggling with being a stay at home mom, this could be a really good book for you. For me, wanting to stay home but also needing to work and being unable to find a job that God wants me to have, it sort of annoyed me at times.
I just kept feeling annoyed.......2007-05-07
I started this book with great enthusiasm and loved lines in the beginning, describing her assessment of home, such as "goggly-eyed fast food figures, tiny cars, baseball cards, rubber snakes - objects you couldn't throw away but didn't exactly know where to put them, either". I thought, this is a book I will be able to relate to! Then...I just kept getting annoyed with Amanda. I wanted to like her, I wanted to be on her side, I wanted to feel sorry for her when I should have...but I just kept thinking....if she's frustrated that her house is messy, then CLEAN IT UP.
She seemed to put no effort into her day to day life, but then complained about her situation. I do think part of that had to do with issues between her and her mother, and also trying to fit into a social circle that was was obviously not one she was comfortable with. The second half of the book just seemed detached from the first. I did love the preschool stories, very witty and so true. As a SAH mom of 7 kids, I thought this book would relate more to my life but after a few chapters I just wanted to reach into the book, grab Amanda by the shoulders, and tell her to get a grip, pick up the house, and figure out for once what to make for dinner! Does that sound harsh? It's not meant to be. I guess if there was ever a woman character who needed a nanny, housekeeper, and personal chef it's this one. Maybe then she would have been happier before it took a crisis to show her what she had all along wasn't so bad after all. I gave the book 3 stars because the writing is really good, even if the story itself sloshes around.
If life stinks money will fix everything.......2006-04-22
I bought this book thinking that I could relate to the main character Amanda, a fulltime mother with two small children. After a couple of chapters the book went in a completly different direction and it focused more on her husband's job at the justice department then on the struggles of being a mom. The end of the book wasn't any better, with Amanda and her baby almost dying but everything being okay because of money. It would be nice if life were like a fairy tale but it's not so I had trouble feeling any compassion for Amanda or any of the characters in the book. Not a very good read.
Your own choices will reflect in your opinion of this book .......2006-01-02
Amanda Bright made her choice to stay at home to raise their two kids Ben and Sophie. Her husband Bob works for the Department of Justice. Bob gets on a case of a lifetime but things seem to innocuously fall apart for him; Amanda; and their marriage. Amanda has trouble at times keeping her sanity when the kids are screaming, the house is a mess, and there's shopping to be done. Amanda struggles with supporting her husband and deciding whether to go back to work. An emergency helps Bob and Amanda re-assess and figure out what's important for their family. The characters were bothersome because they were too much a caricature. Bob's big case lacked for originality. Her various friendships were fake and unrealistic. Her mother was the case study on everything negative about motherhood. Witty at times but tries too much to make a statement.
