Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars The worst written book award!.......2007-05-11

This is one of the worst written and ill-conceived book. Author knows very little about current trends in information systems. An average well-informed reader would know more about information systems than the author without reading a single page of this book. Author's style is old school, orthodox and boring. Maybe his military background is making him approach everything in a disciplined way without curiously questioning how and why. No examples, no case studies discussed. Way too generic, confusing and useless work. I wasted my money as this was a textbook for the course I took in IT auditing. My suggestion to readers is to explore other references in IT auditing on amazon.

Amazon is not allowing me to go lower than one star. I will give it a one star since it is 568 stupid pages bound between two paperboards! IT auditing is relatively a new field and this book is a bogus opportunistic attempt to cash on the new buzz word "IT auditing".

1 out of 5 stars Poorly Written - One of the Worst.......2006-07-27

Frankly, I'm surprised that this book made it to publication. It has too many shortcomings. I'll cover one.

Among other shortcomings, the authors could improve on their writing by including topic sentences in paragraphs. To illustrate, consider the following first sentence in a paragraph:

"The result of natural disasters, such as fires, floods, wind, and earthquakes, are usually catastrophic to the computer center and information systems, even though the probability of such an occurrence is remote."

Based on this topic sentence you would think the subsequent sentences would expound on natural disasters and touch on the frequency of occurrence. Although the paragraph started on topic it quickly faded to discussions on human-made disasters and system failures. These should have been topics for separate paragraphs.

If this is the best available on the topic then I believe an opportunity exists for others to make some money on a better book. The "bar is low" with this book.

I would be interested to hear other comments. My comments are from the eyes of a student who is currently using this disappointing textbook. It is one of the worst textbooks I've encountered in my student career.

3 out of 5 stars Audit and Control.......2001-09-29

I use this book as the basic text in my university course on computer auditing for CA's (CPA's to you south of the 49th) because it is the best text out of a bad lot. At times, Hall is concise and to the point. On occasion, for example in ch's 8 and 9 when he describes the audit of a receivables and a payables systems, his advice is detailed and valuable. Most of the time, though, he wanders into side issues in too much depth, ignores the concepts of risk and control, provides superficial advice and examples on CAAT's (despite the inclusion of the ACL disk, which, although stripped down, is worth the price of admission) and is just too thin on practical discussions of auditing in an EDP environment.

    Description:
In September 2001, the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) Education Committee issued Exposure Draft IEG-1, which states, ''Information technology is pervasive in the world of business. Competence with this technology is an imperative for the professional accountant.'' This view was seconded by a leading visionary in the assurance profession, who recently stated that ''every aspect of the accounting profession is being pervasively affected by advances in information technology'' [Audit. J. Pract. Theory 21 (1) 2002]. Clearly, accounting/auditing education needs to incorporate these technology changes to stay relevant. Despite the apparent need for change, leading academicians have recently talked about the possible demise of accounting/auditing education due to a failure keep up with changes in the business world. Accounting/auditing education has been described as outdated, broken, and in need of significant modification (Albrecht WS, Sack RJ. Accounting education: charting the course through a perilous future. Accounting education series. Sarasota, FL: American Accounting Association, vol. 16, 2000). This study focuses on identifying appropriate information technologies (ITs) for auditing professors and audit practitioners and measuring their self-perceptions of knowledge about these technologies. We conducted a literature search that resulted in the identification of 36 critical information technologies. We then surveyed 1000 accounting information systems (AIS) and auditing professors and 1000 audit practitioners to determine their self-reported IT knowledge levels and perceptions about the best places to learn IT skills. The survey also solicited their views about the best place in the educational process for initially learning these technologies, as well as views about educational methodology. Response rates of 31.2% for professors and 24.7% for practitioners were obtained for the survey. After conducting factor analysis, we found a relatively low level of knowledge for e-commerce and advanced technologies and audit automation constructs by both educators and practitioners, but we found a relatively high level of knowledge for office automation and accounting firm office automation constructs. Results also indicate that the educators with more teaching experience, but lower reported IT knowledge levels, tend to teach auditing. Furthermore, we found a potential ''learning gap'' between educators and practitioners that may occur for 5 of the 36 technologies examined. The results of this research are important for auditing and AIS education because they strongly suggest that more attention needs to be paid to issues such as assigning courses based on knowledge level rather than seniority, technology training and awareness programs for educators and practitioners, and coverage of IT in the university curriculum.

                      Book Description

Multi-modal representations, the lack of complete and consistent domain theories, rapid evolution of domain knowledge, high dimensionality, and large amounts of missing information - these are challenges inherent in modern proteomics. As our understanding of protein structure and function becomes ever more complicated, we have reached a point where the actual management of data is a major stumbling block to the interpretation of results from proteomic platforms, to knowledge discovery. Knowledge Discovery in Proteomics presents timely, authoritative discussions on some of the key issues in high-throughput proteomics, exploring examples that represent some of the major challenges of knowledge discovery in the field. The authors focus on five specific domains: · Mass spectrometry-based protein analysis · Protein-protein interaction network analysis · Systematic high-throughput protein crystallization · Systematic, integrated analysis of multiple data repositories · Systems biology In each area, the authors describe the challenges created by the type of data produced and present potential solutions to the problem of data mining within the domain. They take a systems approach, covering individual data and integrating its computational aspects, from data preprocessing, storage, and access to analysis, visualization, and interpretation. With clear exposition, practical examples, and rich illustrations, this book presents an outstanding overview of this emerging field, and builds the background needed for the fruitful exchange of ideas between computational and biological scientists.

                          Book Description

This volume studies the driving forces behind the development of the European gas market and the uncertainties facing the industry in Europe. There is widespread consensus within Europe about the advantages of natural gas to reduce air pollution and to enhance energy supply diversification. Thus taking into account these most fundamental prerequisites for increased gas demand, this volume addresses the more immediate question of how the conglomeration and organisation of European gas industries will be influenced by this latent demand potential. The purpose of this book is to focus both on the analysis of evolutionary organisational processes within the gas industry, and the pressures for change provoked by external forces such as interfuel competition, environmental imperatives and new trends in European economic policies. The potential for structural change in the organisation of the European gas industry is discussed, as well as the political, economic and commercial factors affecting its progress. With the present uncertainty as to whether the gas industry will take advantage of the obvious market opportunities that are opening up, this book takes a close look at the European gas industry at this time of change, and analyses how this process may develop and the possible implications this will have on the gas industry.

                            Book Description

The first edition of Gauge Field Theories, published in 1985, quickly became widely used in universities and other institutions of higher learning around the world. Written by well-known physicist Paul Frampton, the new edition continues to offer a first-rate mathematical treatment of gauge field theories, while thoroughly updating all chapters to keep pace with developments in the field. Frampton emphasizes formalism rather than experiments and provides sufficient detail for readers wishing to do their own calculations or pursue theoretical physics research. Special features of the Second Edition include:
                            * Improved, logical organization of the material on gauge invariance, quantization, and renormalization
                            * Major revision of the chapter on electroweak interactions, incorporating the latest precision data and discovery of the top quark
                            * Discussions of renormalization group and quantum chromodynamics
                            * A completely new chapter on model building
