Book Description
Covering the essentials of fund accounting, this flexible book introduces the reader to the basic accounting principles at work in both governmental and not-for-profit organizations. This brief book divides most of the chapters into independent sections, which may be covered as separate units. The information on state and local government financial reporting has been updated for coverage of the new financial reporting model, the reporting entity, and financial condition analysis. New examples have been added to more clearly describe the nature of lease accounting. The module on pension trust funds has been rewritten to reflect new GASB pronouncements in a simpler format. New material was added on the measurement of pension costs and other post-employment benefits. For accountants wishing to increase or refresh their knowledge of government and not-for-profit accounting or public budgeting.

Great Book.......2005-09-11
It's a text book with lots of great examples of business challenges. I was required to purchase this book for my class but I also enjoy reading it (as much as I could any textbook) because the concepts are pretty easy to understand. There are also a lot of internet resources to enhance understanding of the concepts.
>Government,
.......2003-11-05
This book concentrates on govermental accounting, and really only has two chapters that specifically apply to non-profit accounting.
Introduction to Governmental and Not-for-Profit Accounting.......2000-08-31
I would rate this book very highly for the non-accounting professional. The book takes the high level of technical terms and reduces it so that it is user friendly for all groups of business professionals.
I would strongly recommend this book to those readers who have a basic understanding of governmental accounting.

A Good Introductory Text.......2000-05-05
I use this textbook in teaching my governmental accounting course at our local community college, and I am also a CPA practicing in local government.
This textbook provides a good introduction to basic fund accounting concepts, specifically local governmental accounting. It is short (only seven chapters), which is great for a semester-long course, since it allows plenty of time for covering the material in-depth.
The first four chapters move fairly slowly, introducing the concepts of not-for-profit organizations and fund accounting. They also provide a thorough review of basic accounting concepts, although for some students, the material is almost too simplistic.
The last three chapters are the heart and soul of the course, dealing with budgetary transactions, property tax transactions, encumbrance accounting, interfund transactions, revenue and expenditure detail and preparation of basic financial statements.
The material deals solely with transactions in a general fund, so there is no exposure to the types of transactions which are peculiar to other fund types. As a practicing governmental accountant, this sometimes seems less than adequate to me, but I have to remind myself that this is an introductory course and textbook, and its purpose is to give students a glimpse into the world of governmental accounting.
The author knows her material well; she studied at the University of Arizona with one of the pioneers in fund accounting, Edward S. Lynn. Indeed, portions of her textbook are modeled on his text, Fund Accounting: Theory and Practice.
The only drawback I find in this textbook is it lacks somewhat in providing real-world applications of the material. Many of the methods discussed in the text are not used in practice anymore, largely because of advances in recent technology. However, that is where my practical experience comes in, as I provide those real-world applications to supplement the material in the book throughout the course.
All in all, a very good introductory text.

Customer Reviews:
I wish I would have had this book about 10 years ago!.......2005-01-16
I'm a graduate student, and I got "Financial Basics" as a resource for a project I did last quarter. My project centered around measuring college students' financial awareness and proactiveness.
Book was an easy, non-threatening read. I started and finished "Financial Basics" during a 2.5 hour plane ride.
Great thing about the book is that you don't necessarily have to be a student (or former student) to benefit from the advice Knox presents. Everyone interviewed for the book had differing financial situations and education--from the financially clueless to the overly stingy and everywhere in between. Instead of trying to fit everyone into one black-and-white financial solution, she gave easy-to-follow, general tips on money management, credit card responsibility, and savings.
Excellent Primer for Students.......2004-12-16
I am a professional financial advisor and have had the opportunity to work with many clients in their 40's and beyond who haven't mastered the basics presented here by Knox. How I wish they had this book 20 years earlier to get them started on the right path - the time lost really hurts. The money management lessons are timeless, straightforward and essential for everyone, especially young adults striking out on their own. The writing is special - stories that help students relate (and make them want to keep reading). The lessons are doled out gently and casually, not more preaching. All-in-all, an excellent resource. I plan to give it to my clients' kids as they hit high school.
Your Credit Rating Counts.......2004-09-20
I sent Financial Basics with my nephew to college. It's a very practical money-management guide for students that generously uses student stories to illustrate the author's points. Most impressive to me is the section that reminds students that their credit rating, good or bad, will follow them after college graduation. She provides contact information for credit rating companies so students can view their own credit history.
Practical solutions to common money problems.......2004-09-11
Also available in a hardcover edition (0814290785, $39.95), Financial Basics: A Money-Management Guide For Students by certified public account, financial planner, and former university administrator and teacher Susan Knox shares hard-learned lessons about managing money when in college. Practical solutions to common money problems faced by students and family, as well as flexible money-management tips, tricks, and techniques for readers accustomed to handling their money in any of a variety of styles fill this solid, information-packed resource. An absolute must-have for any young adult entering the complex world of financial matters, especially when attending school far away from home.

Book Description
During the last thirty years or so it has been widely recognised in the research community that the key transmission medium seeming capable of serving both the ever-growing demand for bandwidth and the unceasing need for new services, is optical fibre. In this context, Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is the most popular technique for introducing concurrency among multiple user transmissions into the network and, thus, exploiting the huge amount of fibre bandwidth available under the severe limitations imposed by electronics speed on the maximum network access rate.
This book extensively covers an important research area in optical networking, enabling readers to fully understand the concepts of optical LANs and learn details of architecture issues and control protocols.
Through its careful focus on the local area, the book, covers the major architectural, topological and protocol issues regarding optical Local Area Networks (LANs) today. Considering that constant advances on optical component technology make all-optical WDM LANs all the more feasible for a wide commercial deployment, the book investigates thoroughly the crucial latter topic, i.e. the Media-Access Control (MAC) protocols that should be used. Besides introducing a noteworthy part of the vast literature on such protocols and providing some helpful distinguishing key protocol characteristics, the book is also innovative in focusing on a recent significant class of promising protocols whose operation is based on network feedback information. In this way, these adaptive protocols for optical LANs achieve an overall higher performance in comparison with many other non-adaptive schemes.
Multiwavelength Optical LANs:
- Enables readers to understand the concepts of optical LANs and learn details of architecture issues and control protocols
- Focuses on the major architectural, topological and protocol issues regarding optical local area networks
- Presents the important class of adaptive protocols for optical LANs
No Optical systems/network developers, or engineers and scientists working in optical networking should be without this book. The well considered approach also makes this recommended reading for undergraduate and graduate computer science, computer, electrical and telecommunications engineering students.

Book Description
Inspired by a ubiquitous piece of graffiti that U.S. servicemen left behind during World War II, Emmy Award-winning television journalist Charles Osgood has collected an assortment of classic stories and comic tales that buoyed the spirits of Americans who served on land, at sea, and in the air.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, but not very funny.......2007-08-12
In the mid-1980's, Studs Terkel came out with a Pulitzer Prize-winning book called The Good War, an oral history of World War II. In a way, Charles Osgood's book, Kilroy Was Here is a sequel to this book, in that it also presents a view from the trenches.
The focus of Kilroy Was Here is the humor of the soldiers. Even in peaceful locations, the military life was often unpleasant in minor but irritating ways. Whether it was ill-fitting clothes, bad food or not-so-bright brass, the reaction of many soldiers was to poke fun at their circumstances (just like Dilbert lightens the days of office workers by joking about the cubicle life). And in the book, we get a collection of anecdotes, cartoons, poems and other writings, most of which were related between soldiers.
As a historic document, Kilroy Was Here is interesting and informative, giving the reader a glimpse into the mind of a serviceman. If there's a problem with the book, however, it's that it's not really very funny. While there is plenty I find amusing that comes from this era (for example, Abbott and Costello or Hope and Crosby), this book gave me only a couple minor chuckles.
I suppose it's a case of you-had-to-be-there (just as a farmer or a cop may not be as entertained by Dilbert as an office worker). And, of course, humor is subjective, so I don't want to be too negative about this book. For the historical value, I am giving it three stars. But for laughs, I'd look elsewhere.
Great for a WWII Vet.......2007-01-05
I gave this book to my cousin who was an Army hero during WWII. He had been in the hospital with a heart problem, and this book brightened his spirits. He told me he enjoyed the book very much and it brought back memories of some of the fun that went along with being a infantryman in 1944/45.
Kilroy.......2005-09-20
This is an excellent collection of World War II humor and pathos, and should be of interest to most of the dwindling group of veterans of that war who are still alive.
Pretty funny stuff!.......2004-12-02
Osgood has sifted through the mountains of GI books and papers, such as "Stars & Sripes" and "See Here, Private Hargrove," to find some of the funniest bits from WWII. There are the famous cartoons by Bill Mauldin, short pieces by celebrities, but most of all, humor written by the men at war.
As Osgood says:
"War is hell, but it can also be hilarious. And in no war was this more true than World War II. While there is nothing remotely funny about the war itself, it's clear that some of the hardship endured in that conflict was made more bearable by generous doses of humor."
A lighter note about World War Two.......2004-04-14
The book "Kilroy Was Here" is a great insight into what went on behind the scenes during World War Two. Charles Osgood has done a spectacular job collecting different stories from so many sources; it's unbelievable! I loved how he focused on the humorous aspect of the war because it really gives you a first-hand glance at the determination of these soldiers and their strong will. They always managed to see the best of everything, even in the most trying times. I really liked the Dictionary of American Military slang at the beginning of the book. There were so many words in there that i had never heard of before, and it helped to keep me on track as i read. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good laugh and who knows any history about World War Two or fought in World War Two. Some of the stories might be hard to understand if you don't have any knowledge of the war. Being able to see the optimism in our war heroes first-hand made me appreciate them even more.
