          Book Description

The essays in this volume investigate themes related to the place of law in Byzantine ideology and society. Although the Byzantines had a formal legal system, deriving from Justinian's codification, this does not solve the problem but rather poses important questions. Was this a society which was meant to be governed by law? For answers, one must look at the intent of the legislators (to address specific problems, or to order society according to an ideal pattern?); the attitudes toward the law; the relationship between law, religion, literature, and art. What were the spheres--political, economic, private--that the laws and the lawgivers sought to regulate? The concepts of law and justice are quite different from each other, and the relationship between them is investigated here. Of importance also, in this medieval society, are the connections between law and religion. There is the problem of the provenance of the law--whether the Emperor or God himself is the source of law--and the broad implications of the answer. At another level, ecclesiastical law was very important for everyday life, and the question arises of how much knowledge people had of it and how profound was their knowledge. Both people's perceptions and their practices were shaped by their views of human justice and divine justice: whether these coincided, and whether they were administered through the same means, for the intervention of saints or icons might be seen as an alternative to human justice. As for human justice, there are questions that involve both society's view of it and the education, knowledge, and interests of those who administered it. Such issues are present in all medieval societies; the case of Byzantium is of particular interest because of the interplay between formal law and the conceptualizations and practices--some quite divergent from the ostensible purpose of legislation--which affected the legislators, the practitioners, and all of society.

                Book Description

Methylation of DNA at cytosine residues as well as post-translational modifications of histones, including phosphorylation, acetylation, methylation and ubiquitylation, contribute to the epigenetic information carried by chromatin. These changes play an important role in the regulation of gene expression by modulating the access of regulatory factors to the DNA. The use of a combination of biochemical, genetic and structural approaches has allowed demonstration of the role of chromatin structure in transcriptional control. The structure of nucleosomes has been elucidated and enzymes involved in DNA or histone modifications have been extensively characterized. Since deregulation of epigenetic marks has been reported in many cancers, a better understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms bears the promise that new drug targets may soon be found. The newest developments in this quickly developing field are presented in this book.

                  Book Description

Within an hour of Mount St. Helens's eruption in May 1980, Charles Rosenfeld, who had been making airborne observations of the volcano, was on the scene witnessing the event and taking a series of spectacular photographs, many of which appear for the first time in Earthfire.

The authors trace the worldwide chains of cause and effect beyond Mount St. Helens, profiling other stratovolcanoes of the Cascade Range in the Pacific Northwest - mountains that have been active and may yet erupt again. They also explore tectonic processes, the Pacific "Ring of Fire," and new research on underwater volcanoes and hot spots.

Charles Rosenfeld is Associate Professor of Geography at Oregon State University. Robert Cooke is Science Editor of the Boston Globe.

                        Book Description

The discrete sources method is an efficient and powerful tool for solving a large class of boundary-value problems in scattering theory. A variety of numerical methods for discrete sources now exist. In this book, the authors unify these formulations in the context of the so-called discrete sources method.

                        Key Features
                        * Comprehensive presentation of the discrete sources method
                        * Original theory - an extension of the conventional null-field method using discrete sources
                        * Practical examples that demonstrate the efficiency and flexibility of elaborated methods (scattering by particles with high aspect ratio, rough particles, nonaxisymmetric particles, multiple scattering)
                        * List of discrete sources programmes available via the Internet

                          3 out of 5 stars A passable romantic comedy.......2004-10-23

Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques

Ever felt left behind in the world of go-get-him ladies on the hunt for Mr. Perfect? Well, this is a fun story for anyone who has ever felt that way before.

Dylan Stone is the only one of her circle of friends not out to find true love, based on the size of the diamond she can receive. Sure, she wants romance with a wonderful man and happy-ever after and all that, but she's in no hurry, as she wants to be sure he's The One before she gets the rock on her finger.

However, after numerous weddings in one year, she begins to wonder if she'll ever find the special someone to give herself to, figuratively and literally. At one of the many weddings she has attended, she is rescued from the overly drunk and amorous father of the groom, by one of the finest specimens of man she has ever seen.

Brad Davis is the ultimate perfection for Dylan. She'll never find another like him, should she search high and low. Things start out fairly well with them, but he is so busy getting his business off the ground and living his full life that there seems to be no way he can fit into hers. Or is there?

Ms. Laine shows talent in this, her debut novel for Harlequin. She's got wit, charm, strong characters, and real life all piled up into one story that will provide laugh out loud moments for readers. This book is written in the style of the ever more popular Chick Lit. Dylan is typical of many young businesswomen in the world today, so busy chasing after her professional success that her personal life sometimes takes a back seat. Her life to date had been anything but conventional, but that adds to her uniqueness, which makes her appealing to the reader.

One thing that is interesting about this story is that though it is a romance, the majority of the story seems to focus more on Dylan and her friends and family then it does on her relationship with Brad. However, it makes for a more well rounded plot when all the interaction is brought into play. In fact, her non-romantic relationships are more appealing to this reviewer then her relationship with Brad. Where her family and friend relationships are zany and lively, her relationship with Brad is almost stale in comparison. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot between them, other then sexual attraction, for a good part of the book.

One thing guaranteed to please though is that this story is full of wit and sarcasm, and humor of many kinds, though it has its serious moments as well. So, if one is looking for a cute story with lively characters to go with the romance, When Size Matters fits the bill. Ms. Laine has talent and plenty of skill, which will likely be developed in later books, allowing her to grow as an author.

                          5 out of 5 stars A hilarious look at 20-something singledom.......2004-07-15

This book is so much fun! I loved the author's humor. Her view of life as a twenty-something is hilarious! I literally laughed out loud. Isn't that the best?

The characters are great too. I found myself so involved in their stories, I didn't want to put the book down. It's a great weekend read. Don't miss this one!

5 out of 5 stars Way above average ..........2004-07-14

For those who normally wouldn't deign to read a Harlequin Romance (and Flipside is Harlequin), this book will come as a massive surprise. The author (Carly Laine has got to be a pseudonym)paints a picture replete with characters that are not only believeable, they accurately reflect a real segment of American society that we all would like to deny exists, yet many of us touch every day. Dylan Stone has a certain je ne sais quoi which indicates that the author must be a woman, for only a woman could depict so accurately and with such incisiveness the feelings and reactions of our heroine. And only a woman could have combined such sympathy and derisiveness in the characterization of the commitment-challenged Brad. Good plot, good characters, great subject matter. It's worth a read at twice the price.
