The path to financial freedom.......2004-10-09
Have you ever been broke, busted and disgusted? Do you live paycheck to paycheck? If you answered yes, then INVESTING IN THE DREAM is the book for you.
Author Jesse B. Brown states, "prosperity has a spiritual basis - it is a divine right." He provides sound rationale as to how we can turn our negative financial situation into a positive one by developing an investment plan and making savvy financial decisions. Even if it is a small amount, the up front sacrifice will ultimately blossom into a financial blessing.
From stocks and bonds to everything in between, Brown not only provides insight into the mysteries of investing, but also reinforces his point by using real world examples. By following five simple steps, we can gain financial freedom according to Brown. These five steps are develop a long-term investment plan; max out tax-deferred retirement plan contributions; review investment goals on a regular basis; follow sound advice and hire a financial advisor to keep you on track.
All in all, INVESTING IN THE DREAM runs the gamut of financial advice. In addition to stocks, bonds and the tax-deferred investment vehicles, Brown also touches on credit card debt, debates about vehicle purchases and provides guidance on home purchases as well. The information in the book is presented simply, and in an easy-to-understand format. At times, Brown seems to be somewhat preachy, but there is no doubt that he knows the investment business. If you are seeking a new financial path, then INVESTING IN THE DREAM may be a book you'd like to consider.

I read your Book and read your columns. The latest column "Financial decisions" featured in The Challenger Newspaper is great. I am a single mother, fulltime employee as well as a parttime college student; I definitely know first hand how expensive it is to raise children. Your book has made the difference.

People who complain about the weightlessness of "virtual" money haven't looked closely enough at "real" money. While it's true that the Internet has no equivalent of the Federal Reserve--yet--it's also true that every economy ever devised has relied on mutual trust. In Trust and Risk in Internet Commerce, Harvard public-policy researcher L. Jean Camp looks at the evolving Net economy as just another means of exchanging goods and services--an engaging and thought-provoking analysis of the assumptions and technology underlying networked business.
Camp briefs the reader on the basics of the Internet and money itself before launching into a deep consideration of their interactions. Since much of the essential infrastructure (money standards, privacy and security law, and fraud prevention, for example) is currently embryonic, much of what Camp has to say is prescriptive--though she is careful not to let her own values intrude far into her writing.
In discussing privacy, for example, she examines several scenarios advocated by different interest groups, from system designers to law enforcement, and shows how each would develop if followed through; since compromise is inevitable, she suggests the limits of the privacy we will likely find in the future.
The final chapter, "The Coming Collapse in Internet Commerce," warns that any money system is inherently fragile and that we must expect catastrophic failure, perhaps more than once, before we iron out the more obvious wrinkles in the new economy. After that, it all depends on trust. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
As Internet-based commerce becomes commonplace, it is important that we examine the systems used for these financial transactions. Underlying each system is a set of assumptions, particularly about trust and risk. To evaluate systems, and thus to determine one's own risks, requires an understanding of the dimensions of trust: security, privacy, and reliability.
In this book Jean Camp focuses on two major yet frequently overlooked issues in the design of Internet commerce systems--trust and risk. Trust and risk are closely linked. The level of risk can be determined by looking at who trusts whom in Internet commerce transactions. Who will pay, in terms of money and data, if trust is misplaced? When the inevitable early failures occur, who will be at risk? Who is "liable" when there is a trusted third party? Why is it necessary to trust this party? What exactly is this party trusted to do? To answer such questions requires an understanding of security, record-keeping, privacy, and reliability.
The author's goal is twofold: first, to provide information on trust and risk to businesses that are developing electronic commerce systems; and second, to help consumers understand the risks in using the Internet for purchases and show them how to protect themselves. Rather than propose a single model of an Internet commerce system, the author provides the information and insights needed by merchants and consumers as they develop the Internet for commerce.

Book Description
Congress in the mid-1990s remains the object of voter discontent. Public outcries against special interests and unresponsive incumbents have amplified an already pervasive skepticism toward Beltway politics. And while Congress continues to conduct its business, William Browne argues that it is no longer business as usual.
Browne opens up the inner sanctums of Congress to reveal how that institution's daily operations--i.e., its policymaking processes--have changed dramatically. He argues that Congress is no longer dominated by party and committee power-brokers, large organized interest groups, or intrusive federal agencies. Instead, he contends, congressional members are driven largely by grassroots issues and constituent interests.
This shift occurred in response to reforms that diluted the congressional seniority system and empowered the rank-and-file to exert greater influence in policymaking. More members now generate more issues much earlier in that process, resulting in a greater diversity of views in previously entrenched policy domains, but also greater disorganization and less predictability.
Those changes are nowhere more apparent than in the ever shifting arena of agricultural policymaking, which, as the single largest contributor to our GNP, remains a central part of American politics. As agriculture has become more fragmented, globalized, and environmentally aware, agricultural policymaking has grown increasingly complex. In the process, a cacophony of constitutent policy demands has altered the way congressional members "play the game." Browne reveals exactly how that new game is played.
Based on nearly 450 interviews with members of Congress, their staff, agency administrators, and lobbyists, Browne's study is timed to appear during the 1995 Congressional debates over a major new agriculture bill. His book should become a major resource--for congressional staff, journalists, political scientists, economists, lobbyists, and policy administrators--for understanding those debates.
This book is part of the Studies in Government and Public Policy series.

A wonderful story with real paleontology.......2007-07-31
I saw the author PaleoJoe at a library presentation and he was excellent. The kids loved him and had to get his books. This is the second book in the series of chapter books--kid of like a Dinosaur CSI-- and the first 3 were all fantastic and we are waiting for the 4th. I read them with the kids and like them, too. If you or your kids like Nate the Great, its a sure hit and the perfect progression into longer chapter books.

Great read aloud for teachers!.......1998-07-13
I had the pleasure of meeting the author, Ms. Draper, shortly before she was voted Teacher of the Year, and she shared her motivation for writing Ziggy: she wanted something for her African-American son to read that he'd enjoy. Well, he got it in this book. And, my second grade, white, boys and girls LOVE this book. It is a fast-moving mystery about Jamaican Ziggy and his crew of pals, their secret clubhouse, and some bones... The students get a kick out of the "Hey, mons" too! Well worth the 5 bucks. This hilarious novel of corporate guerrilla warfare takes you right into the belly of the beast. When the rising young generation of officers at the Waters Cable Corporation shift into hyper-greed mode, they target for early retirement all the middle and upper level executives who had the bad taste to reach age 50 and make a decent salary. But Jack Fallon isn't going to take it: he organizes his paunchy coevals to resist and they fight to keep their jobs and take back control of their destinies. More than a comic excursion, though, The Dinosaur Club is a novel for our time, a well-observed drama of late-20th century capitalism in America.
Book Description
What The First Wives Club did for divorce,
The Dinosaur Club does for downsizing. Both a penetrating look at today's business world and a devastating assessment of corporate greed,
The Dinosaur Club is an often hilarious page-turner. In a five-day span Jack Fallon learns that his wife of 24 years is dumping him and that the company he's worked for all his life is about to do the same. The honchos at Waters Cable decide to implement a "workforce imbalance correction," which includes canning Jack and his coworkers, all of whom are in the 50/50 class - 50 years old, making $50,000 or more. But instead of accepting their fate, Jack and the other "dinosaurs" join forces and fight back. With unexpected twists and turns,
The Dinosaur Club will have readers cheering by novel's end. Hollywood is cheering too. Warner Bros. paid $1 million for the right to turn

At least i didn't waste the time watching reality tv........2006-05-16
This book was trash. Shallow, implausible, moronic plotlines and a writing style that is simulatiously glib and overwritten. The characters were heavy-handed and one-sided. A waste of three hours. And somebody please tell this guy to quit using the phrase "fait accompli"--once is enough.

Little did I know this would be a good diversion from my usual mystery stories. This is about corporate America from which I happily retired over five years ago.
Jack Fallon's wife of twenty-four years is divorcing him, and his employer, Waters Cable, is trying to rid the payroll of the `older', high salaried employees. Charlie Waters hired Jack when the company was just starting up; Charlie is still the CEO and Chairman and has pretty much forgotten Jack's efforts the past twenty-some years. Carter Bennett (born to wealth and snobbery) is the CFO and a smarmy, self-righteous prick who Charlie has hired to get rid of the alleged dead weight, while covering up the blatant age discrimination as best he can. Jack's entire marketing division has been targeted, so his band of not-so-merry cohorts form The Dinosaur Club and put up a fight to expose Charlie and Carter's ulterior motives.
This book was written in 1997 when `workforce imbalance corrections' (a/k/a downsizing) was one of the many corporate games played. The tactics used by management are somewhat true and the targeted employees' reactions are real. If you've ever worked in a large corporation, you'll get a kick out of this story.
interesting but kinda dragged a bit too far and too long.......2004-07-21
kinda fun still. pls read michael moore's two non-fictions 'downsize this', 'dude, where's my country?' and then read donald westlake's 'the ax', to get a more realistic picture of america's corporates downsizing process started from the 90s, then you have to read some other books about america's 'outsourcing' problem in 21st century. i just don't know how long america could survive the prosperity, if all the working class simply can't find jobs anymore in this country.
Shallow Escapist Fantasy for the Mid-Life Crisis Set.......2000-08-22
The premise for this book is compelling: A group of middle-aged business executives fight back against being downsized.
Don't be seduced by this premise however: While this book may have some entertainment value for a reader who prefers not to be intellectually challenged, it makes no attempt whatsoever to deal with the premise seriously.
Instead, the protagonist gets to go on a power and sex trip that must be a wet dream for some regrettable men in their mid-life crisis, and the whole deal comes entirely guilt-free because his ungrateful and exploitative wife, children, and boss basically forced him to act the way he did. In the end, he comes away with a deal that is convenient for him, though neither particularly realistic nor of any benefit to anybody else.
Despite all of this, this book would not really be all that odious - the world needs a supply of shallow books, and writers like Heffernan have every right to make a living off writing them - if it didn't promise to discuss a very real and serious problem - downsizing - and so utterly reneged on that promise.
An excellent concept not fully realized.......1999-02-02
The book was an ok read but ultimately was unsatisfying. THe love interest was a little pat. And he totally went overboard with the ending. I bought it based on the idea which I thought was fresh and topical. Ultimately I thought he could have been more clever with it.

Warm and funny!.......1997-03-28
Jessica Hatchigan writes books that are "good for kids" and fun to read. Maybe I'm the only one who found Judy Blume books mean-spirited when I was a kid. Hatchigan's books were a delightful discovery -- she's warm and funny and wise. In "Dinosaurs Aren't Forever" her ten-year-old heroine Molly leads her friends in a fight against City Hall to save "Sorry" -- a unique playground brontosaurus, and learns to deal resourcefully with her parents divorce, and a three-year-old sister who likes to tag along
