Even if they don't agree on anything else, most parents will concede that financial responsibility is a vital part of every child's education. Former stockbroker Willard Stawski II, father of five and president of a company that produces fiscal-literacy tools for youngsters, believes such behavior ultimately stems from the way a family sets priorities and communicates lessons regarding them. He also contends financial literacy is a key component in everything from enhanced self-esteem to successful interpersonal relationships. In Kids, Parents & Money, Stawski outlines a step-by-step program that can be used to teach proper earning, saving, and spending habits and tie them all together. Starting with development of a team mission statement and financial plan, he addresses age-appropriate goals and conduct--"From about age four, children start to comprehend material value," he writes, and that's when they "also must be shown the offsetting financial principles that govern the material world"--along with allowances, suitable remuneration for work around the home, budgeting, record keeping, and even investing. Clearly defined chapters focus on a specific topic and conclude with simple exercises that reinforce its principles. A related Web site contains interactive materials that also can be used to aid the process. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

Practical and fun strategies that parents, teachers, and mentors in all capacities can use to teach kids-and themselves-how to be financially savvy and, ultimately, secure

"Stawski has given parents a magnificently comprehensive guide to the difficult issue of kids and money. . . . Following his leadership will significantly diminish the problem of raising children who are consumers before they are producers in our society. If you are a parent, this practical book will help you rethink what you intend as your legacy."-J. Zink, PhD, Family Therapist

"Too frequently, parents are reluctant to discuss financial issues with their children while they are growing up, so when they leave home they are totally unprepared to make some of the difficult financial decisions that young adults have to make. This book is about much more than teaching kids about money-it is an easy-to-understand guide on how to help your children grow up to become responsible, clear-thinking individuals who can make wise decisions."-Gary Baughman, Retired President and CEO, Fisher-Price

"Stawski has provided an excellent roadmap for parents who want their children to have a clear perspective on the key factors of life including, but certainly not limited to, money. This book is loaded with keen insights based on `old-style values' that will give parents a head start."-James G. Buick, President and CEO, Zondervan Corp.

"More than a how-to-balance-your-checkbook book, this book will establish the benchmark from which all other family finance books will be measured. Read it if you want a stronger family . . . if you want your children to be more responsible . . . and if you want to be educated and entertained."-Kim Cameron, Dean, Weatherhead School of ManagementCase Western Reserve University

1 out of 5 stars This is one way of doing things........2001-04-06

If you want your kids to earn every penny they have than this is a great book. If you are less militant than this book is way to extreme. It is very biased towards having the kid EARN every penny they get. I believe that some money should just be given to them.

4 out of 5 stars Teaching tool for parents, teachers, grandparents.......2000-04-21

It's a complex world today and kids somehow seem to have distorted notions of the value of money. It's no one's fault but many families could help themselves with this refresher course on financial basics. Stawski's ideas on how to educate kids about money make sense, whether your kids are very young or teens. This is a user-friendly book that includes worksheets you can use whether you have one kid or a houseful. Everyone in the family will benefit from this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for teaching children the real value of money.......2000-04-15

The author has done a great job with designing a practical and helpful book about money. Used properly, the lessons in this book will teach children the most essential "real world" lessons today; the value of having control of your money.

      Book Description

Today's highly complicated tax codes have led economists and policy makers depend on simplified summary measures in order to understand how taxes affect the economy. Studies of the effective tax rate--that is, a measurement of the net amount of tax levied on certain economic activities--provide this sort of descriptive summary. Using estimates of effective tax rates, economists can look for evidence of economic behavior under different tax laws and policy makers can evaluate whether the net outcome is in accord with their intentions. Globalization, with its accompanying international mobility of capital and labor, has created a new use for estimates of the effective tax rate as policy makers seek to compare tax burdens in one country with those in another.

This book provides an overview of the most important methods currently used to measure effective tax rates, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches and illustrating their use with specific case studies. The contributors, all noted international economists and seasoned policy makers, consider such topics as a new method to measure the effective tax rate on investment, the tax burden on cross-border investment, effective tax rates on human capital, the "Taxing Wages" approach, and measurement at the macro and micro levels.

                    Book Description

The Practical Archaeologist is a vital reference to the practice of archaeology, both traditional and new. The author is a working archaeologist, and her enthusiasm for the topic shines through. 5 out of 5 stars A superb, beautifully illustrated overview of archaeology.......2002-09-03

Jane McIntosh's "The Practical Archaeologist" is a superb overview of archaeology for the lay reader. Although I don't have much of a scientific bent, I have always been fascinated by archaeology (probably too many Agatha Christie novels), and I treated myself to this many years ago to see if the real thing was as interesting as I imagined it to be. While nothing can completely convey the hard and tedious work that makes up the bulk of an archaeologist's days, McIntosh's book goes a long way towards clarifying the astonishing things all of us can learn from archaeology.

The book is arranged chronologically, beginning with a chapter providing a broad idea of what archaeology can mean and its function in modern times. From there McIntosh moves deftly to excavation, processing "finds," and analyzing them. She covers both above-ground excavations and those below-ground, and even gets into oceanic archaeology. We learn about how excavation and preservation techniques have improved, while many of the archaeologist's most treasured tools--hands, sieves, and fine brushes--have remained much the same for centuries.

This is a beautifully designed book. Color photographs, black-and-white photos, engravings, and sketches are skillfully combined with an easy-to-read text. This is an excellent introduction to archaeology for anyone who has even a remote interest in the subject--it's difficult to put down once you begin reading it. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars A good, basic book on archaeology.......2001-10-26

THE PRACTICAL ARCHAEOLGIST is a sound overview of the profession, from the tools used to dating methods to underwater techniques. Interpersed with the main text are intriguing sidebars about important finds - for me, the highlight of this book. Told in simple, easy to understand language, this book is geared for those with a casual interest in archaeology, or for high school students. Besides the simplicity (which may be a selling point for many), the main drawback of this book is the lack of discussion on recent finds, despite a copyright date of 1999.

If you are considering studying archaeology, or if you have a passing interest in it, you'll find this book both useful and enjoyable; however, if you crave an in-depth study of the field, look elsewhere. Without doubt, this is an excellent starting point for budding archaeologists.

                    4 out of 5 stars kid-approved!.......2000-07-14

My 14 year-old daughter and her friend attended a local archeology camp and this book was the "required text" for the sessions. They raved about the chapters and illustrations. I got a chance to read through it casually and decided it was worth buying to keep! It is a good overview of archeology around the world, covering many civilizations and is a pleasure to read. Lots of good pictures and photos.

                            Book Description

The book is considered a systematic presentation of the modern quantum field theory of non-linear sigma-models. The contents is based on original papers. Geometrical properties and renormalization of a generic non-linear sigma-model are considered in detail, and illustrated by explicit multi-loop calculations in perturbation theory. Some non-perturbative results are derived for the conformally invariant non-linear sigma-model. Supersymmetric extensions are given for most contructions, with emphasis on their relation to complex geometry. Applications of non-linear sigma-models in conformal theory, gauge theory, string theory, and general relativity are given. The book addresses graduate sutdents and researchers in physics and mathematics.

Hollywood has long been a target of satirical fiction, from Budd Schulberg's What Makes Sammy Run? and John O'Hara's The Big Laugh to Michael Tolkin's The Player and Dennis Hensley's Misadventures in the (213). All that ego, glitz, and enormous lack of talent is just too deliciously bad to go unpunished. Doug Guinan's California Screaming is a nonstop cavalcade of comic invention and gentle invective that sends up Tinseltown, movies, male beauty, outing, body culture, social climbing, conniving, and the closet. With a plot that throws All About Eve and "Apartment 3G" into a blender with ingredients from a Feydeau farce, Guinan manages to hit most of his targets with deadly accuracy and even allows his characters some tender moments along the way. Never afraid to go over the top and always knowing when to stop, California Screaming is a perfect pop cultural artifact; like the most exquisite example of camp, it suggests the innate worth of the absurdities and excesses of contemporary life even as it wickedly ridicules them. --Michael Bronski

                            Book Description

Making it big in Los Angeles can mean a lot of things. For Kevin Malloy -- one of West Hollywood's most gorgeous young men -- it means landing the biggest catch of all among the city's many eligible gay bachelors. For media mogul Brad Sherwood, the most eligible of them all, it means having everything -- power, wealth, success, good hair plugs, and yes, even love.

And so, on a smog-free Christmas morn, Brad, seeking better cell phone reception, finds himself in a deserted parking lot on Sunset Boulevard. It is here that he meets Kevin, who, despite his youth, his fabulous face, great hair, buffed bod, and modest but impeccable wardrobe, knows that there's got to be more to life than what he's found so far as an only vaguely successful photographer with a decided lack of direction.

In California Screaming, what follows this initial meeting of Brad and Kevin, a perfect synergy of money and beauty, is a relationship that takes them to new heights, leaving only the most cynical and bitter of wags about town to ask the question: how can such a perfect love be so pure...and agenda-less?

That it's not, of course, is a truth known only to a privileged few of Hollywood's best positioned insiders. Only they know that Brad Sherwood's media empire is under attack from all sides. Only they know what Kevin has done so far to survive, and even fewer of them know why he escaped from New York to LA in the first place, and why he can never, ever go back.

But then, who among them would talk? Surely not Leon, Kevin's old roommate, left behind in West Hollywood. Not Brad's best friend Rob, a former skating star who now produces ice extravaganzas. But what about Kim, the Australian personal trainer desperately seeking the American dream? Or perhaps Shane, the innocent young flight attendant seeking self-esteem through steroids and very special plastic surgery?

The game they play, of course, is one of all or nothing. Brad's empire may be a house of cards held together by sound bites, but he still controls the deck. And so long as Kevin can keep the real reason he left New York from getting out, everyone's illusions can continue. For why shouldn't they, since illusions are all that matter anyway? And life in LA, when it's not a dream, can turn into a real nightmare.

Fresh and fun, but poignant as well; sexy, sardonic, and unerringly on target, this tale of love and intrigue among Hollywood's gay elite sparkles with wit and delicious fun. Ruthlessly skewering America's true hometown, while joyfully celebrating its glamour and genuine joie de vivre, California Screaming is a must for anyone looking for a primer for survival in the new, respectable Hollywood.

4 out of 5 stars The lead characters will stay with you.......2007-05-17

I read this book because of an independent recommendation, and I have to say that for a fluff novel I got to it as often as possible, because I really wanted to know what happened next, hoping for happy ending for our Kevin, the lead character. What is the nicest surprise, in spite of some novels I read eagerly and then found quite shruggable after-the-fact, this is one where days later I'm still thinking about the characters. So much for a fluff novel! The opening of the book would have you thinking you're looking at a non-violent version of AMERICAN PSYCHO, with all the brand details on the care-taking required to maintain and better the body beautiful, but then you're into a Kevin who reluctantly and only somewhat skillfully enters the world of hustling, but in regards only one man, whom he meets by chance. The truth is Kevin is somewhat naive and really only perfect boyfriend material, so a hustle he does not make. The only drawbacks to the novel is a rather strange yet positive ending, which is also ambivalent, and the major focus on a neighbor character as we follow his lame path from loser to steroid queen - him, I could totally do without.

                            4 out of 5 stars california screaming.......2006-11-11

kevin, drop-dead gorgeous kevin, becomes involved with brad sherwood, magnate extraordinaire; they meet in a carpark on christmas day. kevin, who is used to getting what he wants, settles in to brad's millionaire lifestyle without any problems - yet not all is as perfect as it might seem, and as kevin eventually discovers.
pure trash! that really encompasses this book. what else would one expect from a book that quotes jackie collins on its cover, though? it has aged over the years, though - who in their right mind would consider wearing white lycra bike pants out in public? the australian character grinds a touch, but then i am australian. this is the perfect book to read if you want to escape. i read it once a year - its ability to disconnect you from the world around you is sublime. pure, delightful, trash!

                            4 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Enjoyable.......2004-10-22

I wasn't expecting to become so caught up with these characters, but I really enjoyed them. It was hard to put the book down! The ending was satisfying but could have been better. That's the only thing that kept it from getting all 5 stars. Still, this is a great read and is not just "light-weight" fluff.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gay Hollywood read.......2004-01-18

Having spent ten years of my life in gay Los Angeles in the 1990's, I could picture every character and plot line in this book and ate it up! Closeted rich gay producers, gym bunnies doing steroids, fabulous hollywood hills parties, trips to Hawaii and New York, a gay mafia connection...it's a page turner!

2 out of 5 stars Skip this one.......2002-12-01

Definitely a fluff piece. No real story here. Poorly developed characters, some need not even appear in the book. The character of Shane could have been dropped from the book and would not have made one difference to the storyline. Borders on cartoonish.
