5 out of 5 stars Best book on the topic.......2004-04-15

This book trully deserves 5 stars. It is literally stuffed with very specific steps, processes and case studies. Moreover the book is easy to understand. It is very worth the money. I highly recommend this book to credit risk managers, financial analysts or to those readers who are involved in development of credit policies or procedures.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary.......2003-01-14

Managing Bank Risk, An Introduction to Broad-Base Credit Engineering, takes on a Herculean task of capturing an extraordinarily extensive array of risk management subjects. Having spent several years in my prior career as a Corporate Banker to Fortune 500 Companies, I was familiar with some of the material within the book. However, I found that the most critical tools that I accumulated and have come to rely on have by and large been aggregated and explained clearly through both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Going beyond definitions and methodology, Managing Bank Risk lends focused perspective and context through the use of case studies. Having built various articulating sensitivity models over the course of my career, I appreciated the book's foundation of credit metrics, financial statement analysis with focus on cash flow analysis, proper asset-based lending approaches and detailed explanations of several forecasting techniques. From a pure banking perspective, Mr. Glantz commits significant time to portfolio management, hedging techniques, and understanding derivatives. Having seen only a small fraction of the statistical forecasting tools from business school that Mr. Glantz covers in the book, I found both the theory and practical software-based tools fascinating. Managing Bank Risk also evaluates and lucidly explains many corporate finance concepts and valuation tools such as Real Options and Pricing Models, which I have found important to have a controlling knowledge of in my career as an Investment Banker. Finally, but certainly not in summation, Managing Bank Risk reviews and identifies important Accounting and Corporate Structure insights and lessons that can be taken from recent corporate scandals. Given the sheer volume and quality of topics covered from the most fundamental to some of the most sophisticated, cutting-edge models available today, I would suggest this well-written and comprehensive book as a must-read for business school students or as a reference guide for finance professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible! Leading Resource to Understand Bank Risk.......2003-01-09

Glantz provides an astonishing and comprehensive overview of current banking practices. The book provides the necessary approaches for managing risk and uncovering discrepancies in today's environment of corporate shenanigans. The chapters on credit derivatives and pricing models are the most impressive of all writings on these subjects and are presented in a very clear and concise manner. Finally, the resources and risk rating system included on the CD is worth the price of the book alone.

5 out of 5 stars BEST IN CLASS.......2003-01-02

This book is simply brilliant! Not only did I learn about new techniques for managing bank risk but found it similar to a novel that I never wanted to put down. I never take the time to write critiques but this book definitely warranted it.

5 out of 5 stars Bank Risks.......2002-12-30

Managing Bank Risks is the definitive handbook on how bank risks should be managed. It presents new, leading edge techniques of risk management in a practical, user-friendly way. The accompanying CD provides underpinning for the risk manager to hone his skills. Morton Glantz has done a superb job, providing the reader with the latest risk management techniques under öne roof"

5 out of 5 stars examined to pieces.......2007-03-12

I really enjoy the writers personality. The book was very good. I would read other material he has written. I believe he knows what he's talking about and explains it in fun detail. He comes across with humor that brings the subject closer to home. This is a living book. You can see what is happening....love it.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing and clearly biased.......2007-01-18

Schwalbe's concept of "Sociological Mindfulness" - or basically, how to be a good and socially responsible person - is heavily filtered through his liberal ideaological views. He tells us in the book's very first chapter that calling him a liberal is meaningless, because labels in themselves are meaningless. Sure, throwing around labels like "Liberal" or "Conservative" is not only weak, but cliche. However, when you're writing a book that is essentially a guide to living in and improving society, you definitely lose some credibility for being clearly biased politically.
I don't identify myself at all as a conservative, as I'm pretty liberal myself (possibly even more liberal than Schwalbe that condemns anyone producing or supporting pornography as being responsible ultimately for only misery, and lumps that specific industry in with big tobacco and gun manufacturers), but that doesn't mean I support someone shoveling a political agenda and calling it social science.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to sociology!.......2000-03-06

This is a wonderful book for introducing undergraduate students to the philosophy of Sociology. Schwalbe's concept of "mindfulness" really grabs you. The concept is deceptively simple but extremely rich in its power to inspire the sociological imagination in students - and professors. Mindfulness ---- what a great idea!

        Book Description

Drawing together new papers by some of today's leading figures in international economics and finance, Understanding Interdependence surveys the current state of knowledge on the international monetary system and, by implication, defines the research horizon for the future. Covering topics including the behavior of exchange rates, the choice of exchange-rate regime, current-account adjustment in classical and Keynesian models, the extent and effects of capital mobility, international debt, the stabilization and reform of the formerly planned economies, European monetary union, and international policy coordination, the book underscores the importance of these subjects and identifies lessons for policymakers.

          Description:
Marriage is a ubiquitous social status that consistently is linked to health. Despite this, there has been very little theory development or related research on the extent to which couple members are jointly motivated to and actively engage in health-enhancing behaviors. In this paper we propose an integrative model, based on interdependence theory and communal coping perspectives, that explicitly considers dyadic processes as determinants of couple behavior. Our integrated model applies these constructs to consider how couple dynamics might influence adoption of risk-reducing health habits. Accordingly, we suggest that the couple's interdependence can transform motivation from doing what is in the best interest of the self (person-centered), to doing even selfless actions that are best for the continuation of the relationship (relationship-centered). In turn, this transformation can lead to enhanced motivation for the couple to cope communally or act cooperatively in adopting health-enhancing behavior change. Implications for research related to couples and health behavior change are also highlighted.

              Description:
Using organizational information processing theory (OIPT), we suggest several factors that influence some of the enterprise resource planning (ERP) costs and benefits that organizations are experiencing. Though we do not attempt to address all important factors that contribute to an ERPs impact, we suggest two organizational characteristics that may have received insufficient attention in other ERP literature: interdependence and differentiation. High interdependence among organizational sub-units, contributes to the positive ERP-related effects because of ERPs ability to coordinate activities and facilitate information flows. However, when differentiation among sub-units is high, organizations may incur ERP-related compromise or design costs. We provide a case study that explores the viability of this framework. The case describes some local-level impacts of ERP and provides some evidence of the validity of the model. Unexpected findings are also presented.

                  Book Description

The Treatise of Legal Philosophy and General Jurisprudence is a comprehensive treatment of the issues in legal philosophy and general jurisprudence. This major reference work will consist of a Theoretical Part, 5 volumes, to be published in 2005, and a Historical Part, 6 volumes, scheduled to be published by the end of 2006.

The work is aimed at jurists and at legal and practical philosophers. The theoretical part covers the main topics of contemporary debate. The historical volumes account for the development of legal thought from ancient Greek times through the twentieth century.

Volume 1: The Law and the Right, a Reappraisal of the Reality that Ought to be
                  by Enrico Pattaro

This work brings out and recovers the normative dimension of law, called "the reality that ought to be", placing within this reality the idea of what is right. Part I reconstructs the current as well as the traditional civil-law conception of the reality that ought to be and raises some critical theoretical issues. Part II introduces some basic concepts on language and behaviour and presents a conception of norms as beliefs. Part III aims to find explanations for the idea of a reality that ought to be. Part IV consists of inquiries focussed on Homeric epic, the natural-law school, and the normativistic view of positive law.

                  Volume 2: Foundations of Law
                  by Huber Rottleuthner

This volume focuses on legally external foundations of law by which the origin, the development and the functions of law are explained. Such external variables might be found in mythology, religion, in extra or intra human nature, in the economy, moral attitudes and beliefs, societal conditions, etc. Besides these "explanatory" foundations, which include restrictive conditions of law, foundations are also interpreted in the sense of basic legal concepts, of epistemological foundations or of a normative basis of law.

Volume 3: Legal Institutions and the Sources of Law
                  by Roger A. Shiner

This volume investigates the sources of law and focuses on how legal sources actually function analytically within legal systems to create law. It examines how sources such as legislation, precedent custom, delegation, codes or constitutions directly generate validity for legal norms, or how these sources are authoritative for legal decision-making. The book considers the contextual or strictly institutional authority of law and emphasizes sources of law within the common law tradition.

Volume 4: Scientia Juris, Legal Doctrine as Knowledge of Law and as a Source of Law
                  by Aleksander Peczenik

Legal doctrine has faced repeated criticism, not least from minimalist philosophers. The author proposes a "Copernican revolution" in the way of understanding the relation of legal theory to philosophy. Instead of attempting to make legal theory follow one of the notoriously controversial moral theories, we can try to adjust philosophy to legal theory. In the search for a philosophy adjusted to legal doctrine, cautious philosophical positions are preferred to daring ones.

Volume 5: Legal Reasoning, A Cognitive Approach to the Law
                  by Giovanni Sartor

Legal Reasoning is an application of a broader human competence, practical cognition: the ability to process information in order to come to appropriate determinations. Thus we need to bring to bear on legal reasoning the various studies which address the phenomenon of practical cognition and we need to view the different aspects of legal thinking as elements of a unitary cognitive process.

                      Book Description

This volume summarises the outcome of the 13 th Workshop of the International Association of Phytoplankton Taxonomy and Ecology (IAP) on if, and if so under what conditions phytoplankton assemblages reach equilibrium in natural environments. Quite a number of ecological concepts use terms such as: ecological equilibrium, stability, steady-state, climax, stable state, etc. However, these ecological concepts often have been "translations" of scientific theories developed in physics or chemistry but they almost always lack scientific corroboration, the problem being that often these concepts remain vague and they are not formally defined. Here an attempt to formally recognize what "equilibrium" is in phytoplankton ecology is traced. The book also contains papers by leading scientists on the taxonomy of two selected key groups: cryptomonads and filamentous cyanoprokaryotes. This volume is addressed to all those involved in phytoplankton taxonomy and ecology and in ecology itself.

                        Book Description

Geodesy as the science which determines the figure of the earth, its orientation in space and its gravity field as well as its temporal changes, produces key elements in describing the kinematics and the dynamics of the deformable body "earth". It contributes in particular to geodynamics and opens the door to decode the complex interactions between components of "the system earth". In the breathtaking development recently a whole arsenal of new terrestrial, airborne as well as satelliteborne measurement techniques for earth sciences have been made available and have broadened the spectrum of measurable earth parameters with an unforeseen accuracy and precision, in particular to resolve the factor time. The book focusses on these topics and gives a state of the art of modern geodesy.

                          Book Description

This important book explains how the technique of Witten Laplacians may be useful in statistical mechanics. It considers the problem of analyzing the decay of correlations, after presenting its origin in statistical mechanics. In addition, it compares the Witten Laplacian approach with other techniques, such as the transfer matrix approach and its semiclassical analysis. The author concludes by providing a complete proof of the uniform Log-Sobolev inequality.

A wonderful first novel, Crazy for Trying follows the adventures of Tulsa Bitters, who takes a midnight radio announcer job in Montana, leaving behind a disastrous love affair and a dysfunctional family life. But love isn't through with spunky, chunky Tulsa. It comes through in the charismatic form of a crusty rancher named Mac, whose romantic expectations are not particularly traditional. If you like a happy ending for a courageous and lovable character, Tulsa's story will fill your heart.

                          Book Description

Taking the ground of McMurtry and McGuane, Joni Rodgers drives a fresh and dangerous road through Montana 1979. Meet Tulsa Bitters--19, fresh off the train, alone. Rubenesque and six feet tall, Tulsa is never quite comfortable with herself until she lands a job as a late night DJ in Helena, something unprecedented for women then. Able to be heard but not seen, she discovers a voice and style that are new, and exhilarating. With her witty delivery and rock 'n' roll soul, Tulsa attracts every man in town, but there's only one she hopes is listening. Explosive, funny, fresh--Crazy for Trying tackles tough issues with humor and unflinching honesty, a combination that makes for an original story, and a rollicking good read.

                          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars great character exploration!.......2003-12-23

Over all, CRAZY FOR TRYING is a well-written, if uneven, story of a woman who must overcome a myriad of psychological punches from her past and present and still try to love someone even more damaged than she. This starts out as a lighthearted TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS-style story, but does a 180 midway through to tackle every issue from homosexuality, to feminism, to abortion, to Vietnam, to drug and alcohol addiction, child abuse, spousal abuse, sexual harassment in the work place, to Alzheimer's, to leukemia. Sorry for all the movie references, but think NORMA RAE, TERMS OF ENDEARMENT and BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY.

The characters are extremely well developed, and due to the tremendous amounts of trauma they must face, every facet of the characters' character is explored. Tulsa is painfully drawn as the obese, book-worm wallflower who, under the tutelage of life on her own and the love of a not-so-good man blossoms into a sturdy, strong-willed Montana rose. This is a believable transition to some extent, though her strength after Mac's crippling accident seemed to come from nowhere. Though Mac was also an interesting dysfunctional misfit, his fear of commitment rose and fell, and rather than arced. Over all, a good read.

5 out of 5 stars A friendly voice in the night.......1997-01-16

Since I spent over twenty years on the radio and have just released my own novel with disk jockeys as the main characters (WIZARD OF THE WIND, St. Martin's Press), I was very interested in Ms. Rogers' book. She didn't let me down. There's something sacred about being able to touch someone over the air, and her protaganist quickly masters that knack. Each time I was afraid she would allow the story to get too serious, she would bring me right back up with something so funny...and so real...that I was swept along with the story. I hope Juni Rogers will continue her literary career. She shows great promise. And she has done every late-night dee jay out there a real service.

5 out of 5 stars Sad and funny. I laughed with tears in my eyes........1996-10-25

19 year old Tulsa Bitters carries a lot more baggage than her 2 guitars when she steps off a train in Helena, Montana. She carries with her a lifetime of feeling ugly and inadequate, growing up in a home with a lesbian Mother and a long gone Dad. These feelings vanish when she goes on the air as a late night Dee Jay. Her new life as V.A. Lownes, in which she can be heard but not seen brings out her inner beauty and brings a jaded Viet Nam vet, Mac McPeters into her life. The romance filled battles between the old vet and the glamorous sounding young Dee Jay are fought against a background of the mountains of Montana. Love eventually overcomes the bad memories Tulsa and Mac grew up with. A classic love story that will make you laugh and cry, occasionally at the same time
