This text does not separate journal entries used as examples from the chapter discussions, which makes it difficult to follow each chapter's progression. However, the examples in the text are in depth and quite helpful when worked out in a group setting.
Book is confusing and leaves lots of things out.......2007-01-21
This book was very hard to follow and my professor had to give us handouts from other textbooks because of the amount of stuff the author left out. The author gave problems in the back of each chapter and half the time he didn't cover the material in the book. I certainly hope that my professor reconsiders his choice of books for future classes.

Very understandable explanations.......2004-06-17
Advanced accounting is an area where understanding the concepts that underlie procedures is crucial for solving new problems. This clearly written book excels at giving you the conceptual understanding you need to solve the problems you see on tests. It is especially good in explaining the knotty area of accounting for intercompany transfers.
I recently finished a demanding advanced accounting course for which I picked up this book to supplement the advanced accounting text used in the course. I learned much more from Larsen's book. Despite my somewhat thin at the time background in financial accounting I received an A- in the course. No way that would have hapenned without studying this book. I am sure it will also help in my CPA test preparation. The separately available study guide has good practice questions.

This book emphasizes the advanced accounting subject areas for
the Uniform CPA Examination . It has a strong rendition of
partnership accounting, consolidations and eliminating entries
for intercompany sales, investment income, cost of sales and
minority interest computations. There is good coverage of
the specialized topics in advanced accounting; namely,
installment sales, present value computations and the non-profit accounting sector which may be tested on the Uniform CPA Exam
and graduate-level exams. The book is a worthy purchase. The Web dimension of the presentation adds considerable value to the overall purhase. Advanced accounting courses require preparation and considerable problem solving. Both aspects are emphasized heavily in the current rendition.

before you buy any book on cattle or other livestock.......2007-09-09
Before buying any book on how to ranch, be aware of what NAIS will do to owning cattle or any other livestock and how it messes with title to your property. have any of you heard of the ridiculous program called NAIS(national animal identification system)? It will require all those who own even one chicken, or other livestock animal, to register their premises (negating title to private property), microchip and file birth, death and movement reports so the govt know where those animals are at any moment. The silly reasons given for this program range from bird flu, mad cow, bioterrorist attack or any number of "you need our help" garabage but the real reason is to benefit multi billion dollar corporate agriculture so they can improve their marketability while sticking it to the rest of us.....[...].

As I was browsing through books on buying country properties, I came across this gem! This book gives wonderful insight into buying country properites and starting a ranch. I used information from it in my purchase of land and it has been invaluable. The Hoff's combined experience gives great insight to all aspects of managing land. It is one of the few books on the market that actually has useful information!

Principles and Standards for Measuring Net Primary Production in Long-Term Ecological Studies is the first book to establish a standardized method for measuring net primary productivity (NPP) in ecological research. Primary productivity is the rate at which energy is stored in the organic matter of plants per unit area of the earth's surface. As the beginning stage of the carbon cycle, our ability to accurately measure NPP is essential to any ecological analysis, as well as agronomy, forestry, fisheries, limnology and oceanography. In fact, NPP measurements are fundamental to ecosystem studies at thousands of sites around the world. All 26 LTER sites will be expected to collect and report data using these new standards, but the standards should reach well beyond LTER sites. Identified standards for NPP measurements will allow researchers from diverse biomes to authoritatively compare measurements among their sites. Comparable measurements will build a foundation for a broad scale understanding of the environmental, biological, and nutrition controls on NPP. The book includes chapters for each of the critical biome types, including special techniques that work best in each environment. For example, there are chapters that discuss grassland ecosystems, urban ecosystems, marine pelagic ecosystems, forest ecosystems, and salt marsh ecosystems, among others.

Description:
Terrestrial biosphere models/land surface models are routinely used to study the effects of CO"2 doubling and climate change. The objective of this study is to show that the biological response associated with CO"2 doubling is important, and that the effects intrinsically depend on the soil moisture state. Therefore, using a coupled biosphere-atmosphere model, we tested the hypothesis that the biological effects of CO"2 changes in biosphere models are significantly coupled to the hydrological feedback via soil moisture availability in a terrestrial biosphere/land surface model. The results from a 15-day simulation of a photosynthesis-based land surface model, dynamically coupled to an atmospheric boundary layer and surface energy balance scheme, were analyzed to test the hypothesis. The objective was to analyze the biological effects of CO"2 doubling under high as well as limiting soil moisture conditions for prescribed changes to the vegetation/land use type. The approach was to analyze the results from a coupled land surface-atmosphere model obtained by changing the biome type for each run. Sensitivity for all of the nine global vegetation type changes, as defined through the Simple Biosphere Model ver. 2 (SiB2) land cover classification, were analyzed for evapotranspiration and net carbon assimilation. The results indicated that: (i) the soil moisture (and its interaction with CO"2) has a direct (first-order) effect on the biological effects of CO"2 changes and the terrestrial ecosystem response; (ii) the biological impacts associated with CO"2 changes in a biospheric model should be interpreted in consideration of the soil moisture status; and droughts or high soil moisture availability can enhance or completely balance or even reverse the effects associated with CO"2 changes; (iii) for each vegetation type, the model results indicated a different response to soil moisture and CO"2 changes; and resolving the direct and indirect effects explicitly, both C3 and C4 vegetation, appeared to be significantly affected by the biological effects of CO"2 changes, and (iv) the explicit coupling between soil moisture/hydrological state and the CO"2 changes need to be explicitly considered in projecting climate change impacts. The study results also indicated that feedback pathways can be efficiently determined by dissociating the direct and the interactive effects of CO"2 impacts.

This book presents a comprehensive account of the phenomenon of spontaneous ordering. The phenomenon, which can be categorized as a self-organized process, is observed to occur spontaneously during epitaxial growth of certain ternary alloy semiconductors and results in a modification of their structural, electronic, and optical properties. There has been a great deal of interest in learning how to control this phenomenon so that it may be used for tailoring desirable electronic and optical properties. There has been even greater interest in exploiting the phenomenon for its unique ability to provide an experimental environment of controlled alloy statistical fluctuations. As such, it impacts areas of semiconductor science and technology related to the materials science of epitaxial growth, statistical mechanics, and electronic structure of alloys and electronic and photonic devices.
During the past two decades, significant progress has been made toward understanding the mechanisms that drive this phenomenon and the changes in physical properties that result from it. A variety of experimental techniques have been used to probe the phenomenon and several attempts made at providing theoretical models, both for the ordering mechanisms as well as electronic structure changes. The various chapters of this book provide a detailed account of these efforts during the past decade.

Harris's most sympathetic characters are Yancey's roommate, Windsor, a plump schoolteacher who spends her spare evenings holding abandoned babies at Hale House, and Zurich Robinson, a gay Christian ex-athlete who briefly considers joining Basil's agency, eliciting a string of ugly clichés from Basil's partner. Meanwhile, Basil, that pillar of integrity, listens in silence. The deal is scotched when Zurich announces that he has been interviewed for an article on gay men in professional athletics. When Basil asks him why he is coming out, Zurich tells him about another young quarterback who tried to run from his sexuality by getting married. The day of the wedding, he shot himself. "As Zurich told the story," Basil recounts,
I could picture the young man and for a brief moment felt the pain he was struggling with. I had been there. But it had never gotten to the point where I wanted to kill myself. If I could have talked to Milo I would have told him, "Roll with it young brother.... There is a way to have your cake and ice cream, too."
Suffice it to say that after a series of delicious plot twists and acts of increasing wickedness, it becomes clear that Basil and Yancey are too damaged to save each other. Although the characters in his sixth novel are somewhat two dimensional and his prose a little flat, E. Lynn Harris can manipulate a story line with the skill of an Eagle Scout earning his badge in knotmaking. This is my first time reading an E. Lynn Harris book, and I was impressed by his style. With "Not A Day Goes By", he kept his chatpers short, he did not drag the story along, and he began his book with the ending of the story, something that is becoming increasingly popular with novelists of today.
Basil and Yancey are engaged to be married. In the beginning, they are very much in love with each other. Basil is clearly more in love. Yancey is so selfish, that she couldn't have loved Basil the way he loved her anyway. He is a former football player who started his own sports agency and she is an actress. As the story progress, we come to find that Basil is bisexual and struggling with his sexuality. In this book, we meet Yancey's mother, and upon reading about her mother, we see where she gets her selfishness and conceit from. When Yancey and her mother find out that Basil is bisexual, they do some awfully conniving things to him. Read this book to see if Yancey and Basil finally work things out.
I didn't give this book 5 stars because the ending seemed a bit rushed and corny. The sole reason I read a book is to see how it ends, so that was really a disappointment. Other than that, it was enjoyable.

This is the first book that I've read by E. Lynn Harris, and I didn't know what to expect. It was very entertained it, and I actually learned from the book. I would recommend this book to anybody.
