Very understandable explanations.......2004-06-17
I recently finished a demanding advanced accounting course for which I picked up this book to supplement the advanced accounting text used in the course. I learned much more from Larsen's book. Despite my somewhat thin at the time background in financial accounting I received an A- in the course. No way that would have hapenned without studying this book. I am sure it will also help in my CPA test preparation. The separately available study guide has good practice questions.

Principles and Standards for Measuring Primary Production (Long-Term Ecological Research Network)
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0195168666 |
Book Description
Principles and Standards for Measuring Net Primary Production in Long-Term Ecological Studies is the first book to establish a standardized method for measuring net primary productivity (NPP) in ecological research. Primary productivity is the rate at which energy is stored in the organic matter of plants per unit area of the earth's surface. As the beginning stage of the carbon cycle, our ability to accurately measure NPP is essential to any ecological analysis, as well as agronomy, forestry, fisheries, limnology and oceanography. In fact, NPP measurements are fundamental to ecosystem studies at thousands of sites around the world. All 26 LTER sites will be expected to collect and report data using these new standards, but the standards should reach well beyond LTER sites. Identified standards for NPP measurements will allow researchers from diverse biomes to authoritatively compare measurements among their sites. Comparable measurements will build a foundation for a broad scale understanding of the environmental, biological, and nutrition controls on NPP. The book includes chapters for each of the critical biome types, including special techniques that work best in each environment. For example, there are chapters that discuss grassland ecosystems, urban ecosystems, marine pelagic ecosystems, forest ecosystems, and salt marsh ecosystems, among others.

Advances in Aggregates and Armourstone Evaluation (Geological Society Engineering Geology Special Publication)
Manufacturer: Geological Society of London ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1862390002 |
Book Description
This volume highlights a range of pressing research issues in natural construction materials. It is of direct relevance to the civilengineering industry, which faces growing pressures to sustain the natural and built environment while demanding a standardizedhigh-quality construction product across Europe. Advances In Aggregates And Armourstone Evaluation provides an authoritative selection of research papers includingoverviews and case histories. The book examines a range of aggregate and armourstone specifications and new tests, includingclear examples of how the statistical significance of test results can affect producers and users. Papers on rock sourceevaluation procedures and the opening of a new quarry are of particular practical value to engineering geologists serving theextractive industries. In addition, construction material availability, future demand and sustainability are examined, emphasizingnew data for marine sand and gravel, armourstone, shingle durability, and concrete made from alternative aggregates. The book contains North American and European research with international relevance. It will stimulate new ideas that feedinto the best practice of tomorrow's engineering geologists.

Spontaneous Ordering in Semiconductor Alloys
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 030646778X |
Book Description
This book presents a comprehensive account of the phenomenon of spontaneous ordering. The phenomenon, which can be categorized as a self-organized process, is observed to occur spontaneously during epitaxial growth of certain ternary alloy semiconductors and results in a modification of their structural, electronic, and optical properties. There has been a great deal of interest in learning how to control this phenomenon so that it may be used for tailoring desirable electronic and optical properties. There has been even greater interest in exploiting the phenomenon for its unique ability to provide an experimental environment of controlled alloy statistical fluctuations. As such, it impacts areas of semiconductor science and technology related to the materials science of epitaxial growth, statistical mechanics, and electronic structure of alloys and electronic and photonic devices.
During the past two decades, significant progress has been made toward understanding the mechanisms that drive this phenomenon and the changes in physical properties that result from it. A variety of experimental techniques have been used to probe the phenomenon and several attempts made at providing theoretical models, both for the ordering mechanisms as well as electronic structure changes. The various chapters of this book provide a detailed account of these efforts during the past decade.

Set in New York in the closing months of 1999, E. Lynn Harris's tightly plotted Not a Day Goes By bears all the outward markers of a romance by Danielle Steel or Jackie Collins--wealth, glamour, sex, and intrigue--except that the two main characters are more like the wily villains of a Dynasty remake. John "Basil" Henderson, a former football player who has started a successful sports agency with a friend, is a gorgeous, arrogant, bitter, woman-hating, homophobic, African American bisexual who is used to people staring at him. "Especially when I was naked," Basil confides, "My ass was perfect and my jimmie was both long and thick." Basil has fallen in love with an equally alluring figure, Yancey Braxton, a bronze-skinned Broadway singer whose beauty and dedication are matched by ferocious self-absorption and cunning. (Instead of attending her 10-year high school reunion, Yancey sent signed photos of herself and press packets.) Basil feels that his love has rescued him from the shallow life of a player, and he allows himself to believe that she is a good person, and that when they marry, she'll settle down a little and provide him with children. Yancey cares for Basil, too, but her career comes first. After that, sex and money. Babies aren't even on the list.Harris's most sympathetic characters are Yancey's roommate, Windsor, a plump schoolteacher who spends her spare evenings holding abandoned babies at Hale House, and Zurich Robinson, a gay Christian ex-athlete who briefly considers joining Basil's agency, eliciting a string of ugly clichés from Basil's partner. Meanwhile, Basil, that pillar of integrity, listens in silence. The deal is scotched when Zurich announces that he has been interviewed for an article on gay men in professional athletics. When Basil asks him why he is coming out, Zurich tells him about another young quarterback who tried to run from his sexuality by getting married. The day of the wedding, he shot himself. "As Zurich told the story," Basil recounts,
I could picture the young man and for a brief moment felt the pain he was struggling with. I had been there. But it had never gotten to the point where I wanted to kill myself. If I could have talked to Milo I would have told him, "Roll with it young brother.... There is a way to have your cake and ice cream, too."Suffice it to say that after a series of delicious plot twists and acts of increasing wickedness, it becomes clear that Basil and Yancey are too damaged to save each other. Although the characters in his sixth novel are somewhat two dimensional and his prose a little flat, E. Lynn Harris can manipulate a story line with the skill of an Eagle Scout earning his badge in knotmaking. Don't start this page-turner if you don't have six or seven free hours in which to read it straight through. --Regina Marler
Book Description
John “Basil” Henderson has always played the field, both as a professional football player and as an equal opportunity lover. After retiring his jersey for a career as a sports agent, the dashing playboy is surprising everyone—including himself—by deciding to settle down and commit to his new love, Yancey Harrington Braxton. A fiercely driven Broadway star on the rise, blessed with beauty, charm, and a fondness for the finer things in life, she appears to be his ideal mate. A lavish wedding is planned, but just before the nuptials, fate and a little comeuppance threaten the happy couple’s future.Customer Reviews:
