Book Description
Today's most powerful personal finance website transfers its take-noprisoners approach to the printed page
Errold Moody and his website efmoody.com have gained a substantial grassroots following --and praise from Forbes, Business- Week, USA Today, and others--for their straight-talking approach and hands-on guidance in all areas of personal finance.
No-Nonsense Finance brings the website's wealth of information to a concise yet comprehensive guidebook, outlining a commonsense program for saving regularly, investing wisely, and resisting the impulse to buy unnecessary products and advice.
From showing readers how to find advisers they can trust to dispelling myths about asset allocation, dollar-cost averaging, and more, No-Nonsense Finance is the ideal financial reference. Readers will enjoy, and profit from, Moody's irascible, often irreverent advice, including:
- Why one should never buy stocks from a stockbroker
- Basic estate planning issues demystified
- "Caveat Investor" sidebars to highlight key points

Some good information.......2006-12-07
Certainly there is some good information here including some legal information about who is allowed to give insurance advice for a fee and discussions on Medicaid that could be adapted as a sales pitch for long term care insurance.
On the other hand, he advocates market timing when the economy is "broken" as indicated by an inverted yield curve and reports from the Federal Reserve. What he suggests doing is gradually move equities that are owned into safer and safer securites as the market prices deteriorate; no evidence is given to how the suggestion would have worked even in past bear markets (I suspect it would have been useless). Highly unconvincing material.
Straight Ahead - No B.S........2006-09-13
Errold's book calls them as he sees them with no candy coating. If you want an unbiased primer on investing and insurance this belongs on your bookshelf. The information on the book ranges from basic to advanced and Errold discloses information that no one else does or will. The book will help to educate you so that you either know how to take care of yourself.
An aside, I am a colleague (fellow life insurance analyst) and view Errold as an educational resource. I specialize in life insurance only and Errold has helped me to learn about the wide spectrum of financial products out there.
Disappointing.......2005-01-22
I picked up this book hoping that it would provide me with a refreshing and different outlook on investing. Unfortunately, it fell far short of my expectations. Moody first starts off by saying that nearly all authors, pundits, advisors, money managers, etc. are not to be trusted. In fact, if your financial advisor cannot operate an HP financial calculator, Moody feels you should head for the door. He then spends a fair amount of time attacking the way most people present asset allocation and stresses that the subject is a complex one. He then attacks dollar cost averaging and argues that it will hurt you more often than not. Fair enough--I agree with most of the points he has to make, but then his solution falls far short.
He talks about how you need to understand the fundamentals of investing and spends some time reviewing alpha, beta, standard deviation and Monte Carlo simulations. He then states that you need to pay attention to yield curves and above all, read what the Federal Reserve issues very carefully. THAT'S IT FOLKS!!! I am sure that many people watched yield curves and looked at what the FED had to say, but they still lost their shirt in the last big downturn. He might as well have said to read the Wall St. Journal or Investors Business Daily closely and you won't lose your shirt. In sum, there was little helpful investment advice in this book.
For example, Moody sharply criticizes most people's simplistic approach to asset allocation, but then doesn't tell you how to approach the issue other than to say it is a complex one. If most people are addressing the issue of asset allocation incorrectly, then give us some guidance on how to approach it properly.
One final criticism of the book is that in the first few chapters Moody slips in various one liners and "zingers." I don't mind a little levity now and then, but Moody goes overboard. He should leave the comedy to Robin Williams and focus instead on propping up his book.
Read it.... or weep!.......2004-10-14
I highly recommend this book as a source of easily understandable information on all aspects of one's personal finances. Having worked with the senior population for the past 15 years, I see on a daily basis the results of people who do NOT take control of how they want to spend their later years.
I was particularly impressed with the section on long term care insurance and the fact that he stresses the value of buying a policy that becomes effective based on 7 ADLS instead of 6. (If you don't know what that means, then THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU.)
Another area that I feel is exceptionally well handled is addressing the emotional aspects of growing old, especially the impact of Alzheimer's disease on a family, and he gives good suggestions on how to plan for such eventualities and the end of life in his estate planning section.
Reviewer NICK comments on the depth of Mr. Moody's knowledge. I would agree, and certainly his website, www.efmoody.com is an ever-changing entity!
We all need to be reminded that not everyone is as ethical and honest as we would like--his warnings and suggestions on how to avoid being taken advantage of would seem to be right on the mark.
One of the most difficult things about writing is trying to take something that is VERY COMPLICATED and make it seem simple to understand. This book not only does that, but he also throws in a considerable amount of unexpected humor!
Go for it! It will make a nice Holiday gift for those who keep putting off "getting their financial act together."
Full of ranting and raving and little else........2004-09-22
As an investment professional (and a CFA charterholder), I was eager to read a book that was supposed to "cut-to-the-chase." What it turned out to be was not much more than a holier-than-thou, self-righteous venting. Don't look here for the basics of investing or personal finance. It is just the author's platform for railing against everything he thinks is wrong in the investing world. There is nothing wrong with that - except that the author makes the same tired points over and over and over again. He would have you believe the he is the only financial professional who could help you. The actual material on investing is basic and could be found in a hundred different books on the market. Save your $$$ - literally!

United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Principles -- how, with a riveting title like that, is this book not at the top of best-seller lists all over the world? Consider just one thing: spelling! They amortise, the capitalise, they realise and such... what a rich, diverse presentation this is. No library is complete without this volume; no life is complete without its contents; no human being can possibly be fulfilled without knowing UK GAAP.
Product Description
When the local iron mine began hiring women in 1975, Lois Jenson, a single mother on welfare, didn't think twice about accepting the grueling but well-paid job. What she hadn't considered was that she was entering a male-dominated society that fiercely resisted the inclusion of women, a prejudice born out in the brutal harassment of every female miner. Relentlessly threatened with pornographic graffiti, denigrating language, stalking, and physical assaults, the women largely kept quiet for fear of losing their jobs, until Lois, devastated by the abuse, found the courage to file a complaint in 1984. From Jenson's first day on the job, through three intensely humiliating trials, to the emotional day of the settlement, this is the thrilling story of how one woman pioneered and won the first sexual harassment class action suit in the United States.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing book.......2007-08-04
I grew up on "da range" and I'm familiar with the mines. My hometown is Hoyt Lakes, not very far from Eveleth. My dad and one of my uncles worked at LTV Steel outside of Hoyt Lakes, I think even my brother worked there for a while. I don't remember hearing anything of the trial. Back in 1998 I was 9 years old. I became familiar with it, when they were filming the movie North Country while I was going to the community college in Virginia. I've watched the movie multiple times. Then this summer in one of my English classes we were required to read Class Action. By the time the class finished I hadn't finished the book yet, but that didn't stop me from reading it. This is a really great book, and I've had a hard time putting it down. Its so interesting to learn the facts of the case, and was even more surprised when I recognized some of the last names of the people. I haven't quite finished yet, I have about 60 pages to go. I keep finding myself getting irritated with the rulings of Judge McNulty. This is a very important book, and in my opinion everyone should read it.
Iron determination.......2006-08-28
Like some other reviewers I came across this book after seeing the movie North Country. The movie though is just good entertainment pulling at the heartstrings and very loosely based on the legal problems of single mother Lois Jenson.
The book, I'm pleased to say, is much more gripping and will keep you turning the pages until the end. I thought it raised various issues like:
*Why did the legal aspects of this case take from 1984 until a settlement in 1998? In 1997 a judgement from the Eighth Circuit court commented on the 'inordinate delay' and that it simply was not possible for the parties to get justice 'when a final outcome is issued more than ten years' after the case was filed and more than fifteen years since Lois started her class action.
*Why did the mineworkers union maintain such a male chauvinist view towards its female members? I always assumed that Minnesota folk, historically populated by hard working European immigrants in a hostile physical environment would have been much more sympathetic to the sexual harassment that went on year after year in the mines. In fact very few males come out of this story with much credibility, from the mine management down to the union, they are really shown to be sexist and ultra conservative when females start to (legally) work in their domain.
*Why did it take so long for the mines main insurance company, who were going to be the ultimate payers of any compensation, to get to grips with the case? When they did get closely involved in 1998 the problems seemed to evaporate and the ladies got their money
The authors write in a simple straightforward style fortunately avoiding flowery generalisations that seem a staple of non-fiction writing. The story unfolds in a logically time frame from March 1975 to the final financial settlement in November 1998. Early on there is an excellent historical overview of the Mesabi Range and the importance of the raw materials lying just under the surface. A nice touch I thought was the frequent explanations of points of law and how these affected the progress of the case.
A couple of points occurred to me as a read the book: I would have liked to see a listing at the start describing the principals, frequently a name popped up and I wondered who the person was having seen a mention maybe a hundred pages earlier. So much of the story describes the mine and other buildings, a simple diagram of the plant layout would have been helpful.
'Class Action' is a powerful narrative about a hostile working environment and the legal system and it reminds of a quote by Thomas Noon Talfourd:
Fill the seats of justice
With good men not so absolute in goodness
As to forget what human frailty is.
BTW. I wanted to see photos of the four heroes of the book, the wonderful Lois Jenson and her legal team Paul Sprenger, Jane Lang and Jean Boler and I found them all through Google Images.
A must read.......2006-05-29
A story of great courage and resolve, of working conditions beyond the pale, and the vicissitudes of the courts. Well written, in journalistic style, this is a page-turner, as well as being thoroughly researched, and factually accurate.
Class Action.......2006-05-09
This is by far one of the best books I have ever read. This is something our school kids should be required to read as well. The 2 ladies who wrote this book did an excellent job of telling Lois Jenson's real story. Her story, while tragic, needs to be told. The movie doesn't do this book justice.
Class Action. Review from a reader.......2006-04-17
This is a must read for anyone considering a civil suit. Unlike the other reviewers, I did not feel this book glorified the lawyers. On the contrary, Bingham and Gangsler went further than any other writer by exposing the cost of litigation - the abuse and exploitation of injured litigants by lawyers and judges who make their living off our courts. Lori Jenson is the only heroine in this story. Through the authors I felt her pain and realized her sacrifice for all of us.
But, the screenwriters of North Country made a mistake by concentrating on the sexual harassment part of this story in their version of this book. It is as if they did not read past the first few chapters. The screen writers either missed the message or underestimated the fears of litigants in the over 100 million cases filed each year in American courts. The wider scope of injustice, the legal and judicial wrongs exposed in this book, would have made a better story. But, even if you appreciated the movie, North Country, you need to read this story. The truths it reveals about America's justice system demands that Class Action be a part of everyone's personal library.

Many people realize that the ocean covers some two-thirds of the earth's surface (the actual figure is 71 percent). But as William J. Broad points out in his entrancing The Universe Below, this hardly tells the story of the sea's dominance of our planet. The world's oceans are more than two miles deep on average and, contrary to long-held views, are richly populated with life all the way to the bottom. So, in fact, the sea probably makes up something like 97 percent of all inhabited space on Earth--we surface dwellers are almost an afterthought.
"This book is about the largest unexplored part of our planet, the deep sea," writes Broad in his prologue, "and how we are illuminating its dark recesses in a rush of discovery that is shattering old myths, rescuing lost treasures, and laying bare secrets of nature hidden since the beginning of geologic time." In seven chapters, each devoted to a different aspect of deep exploration and discovery, Broad weaves together scrupulous reporting and scientific explication (he has won two Pulitzers for his science writing for the New York Times) along with history and his own personal experiences, all told in vigorous, intelligent prose that often rises to a quiet poetry. The result is one of the most enthralling science books of the decade. --Nicholas H. Allison
Book Description
Pulitzer Prize winner William J. Broad takes us on an adventure to the planet's last and most exotic frontier -- the depths of the sea. The Universe Below examines how we are illuminating its dark recesses as a wave of advanced technology quietly opens the Earth's largest and most mysterious environment.
Broad takes us on breathtaking dives and expeditions -- to the Azores, to the Titanic, to hot springs teeming with bizarre life, to icy fissures aswarm with gulper eels, vampire squids, and gelatinous beasts longer than a city bus. We meet legendary explorers and researchers and go with them as they probe the ancient mysteries of a universe that encompasses the vast majority of the Earth's habitable space and holds millions of humanity's lost artworks and treasures.
The Universe Below is an unforgettable trip to our last great unexplored frontier.
Customer Reviews:
Misleading!!!.......2006-09-22
I found this book to very misleading compared to the back cover notes and the reviews on Amazon. The book deals very LITTLE with deep sea creatures and is mostly obsessed with man's journey to the deep sea (i.e. subs, the Navy, boring self-obsessed scientists, rovers etc.) I found it very boring.
Where Is all this Going?.......2006-08-31
"The Universe Below" was well written and enjoyable. In retrospect the theme was sort of nebulous, just a recitation of some interesting and exciting watching other people do some fascinating work.
Perhaps because I was already familiar with much of this work, I did not have as much fun with it as I did with "The Oracle".
Unexpected Delights... Much like the Deep Sea.......2006-06-06
Judging this book by the cover, I assumed that it was going to be nothing more than a great cataloging of the biological diversity of the ocean. I was quite wrong, but very pleased with the contents nonetheless. The Universe Below covers our entire (very recent!) knowledge of and relationship with the ocean's depths.
Throughout this story Broad introduces us to many of the inhabitants of the deep sea including hyperthermophilic bacteria, giant squid, tube worms, anglerfish, octopus-squid hybrids and floating ctenophore "nets". The author discusses the speculation surrounding the lives and habits of these mysterious animals, and muses on the many creatures that we have yet not observed. Beyond describing the inhabitants of the deep, Broad tackles the topics of the longevity of many deep creatures and the potential dangers (both economical and ecological) of deep sea dredging and fishing.
In addition to his accounts of the biology of the deep sea, Broad also tackles the geology of the ocean, covering such topics as seawater composition, deep sea vents, volcanic activity, the potential and history of deep sea mining, and the physical quirks that result from the intense pressures and temperatures that occur in the abyss.
To guide the reader through these physical and biological wonders, Broad uses history as a framework. Starting with early explorers and their sounding lines attempting to measure the depths of the ocean, the author guides us through the present day. He vividly recounts the first Bathysphere and Bathyscaphe, the tragedies of the Thresher and the Scorpion, the recovery of the Titanic, the dumping of nuclear waste in the sea, the development of Alvin, and the recovery of countless shipwrecks from ancient to modern. Because I was drawn to this book by it's promise of accounts of biological wonders, I was surprised to find myself most engaged by Broad's accounts of the clandestine undersea missions undertaken during WW II and the cold war. I was also intrigued by the connections between Silicon Valley moguls and latest developments in marine exploration.
No matter where your interests lie, this story of the sea will capture your imagination. From history to technology, biology to geology, Broad successfully weaves the threads of science and history together to create an enlightening (and at times frightening!) tale of this mysterious frontier.
Lots o' fun!.......2005-12-25
This is a must read for anyone whose interests lay near the bottom of the ocean. Read it and discover the beauty of Praya. I ain't gay.
fascinating world, opened by new technologies.......2004-09-07
This is the story of how technology has opened a new frontier of science, much as van Leeuwenhoek did with the microscope. Broad reports on how the mysteries of the deepest oceans are opening up to our eyes with mini-supersubs, sonar devices, and robots. Much of this revolution is due, he says, to the end of the Cold War, which allowed us to put them to scientific rather than miltary purposes.
The world they discovered may harbor the most diverse forms of life on the planet, in environments hostile beyone imagination. Broad introduces us to an incredible gallery of exotic creatures, from hypothermophiles - bacteria that live in lava-heated water of 400 degrees F - to countless species of squid and manowars. Braod also accompanies treasure hunters as they explore for ancient artifacts and rare minerals.
THe book is part history, part primer in technology, and part environmental tract, and the skill with which Broad combines these concerns whows why he won the Pulitzer twice. It is also poetically written.
Highest recommendation. This book can ignite the imagination for a lifetime.

Pioneers Of Geology Rocks!.......2002-01-22
Pioneers of Geology: Discovering Earth's Secrets by Margaret W. Carruthers and Susan Clinton [Reading Between The Bones: The Pioneers of Dinosaur Paleontology] is an excellent overview of geology and geologists for the late elementary and middle school aged kid. The book is well-written and kept my attention, even though it is a subject that I know exceedingly well and was written for a younger reader. I am pleased that the scientists were presented in a true-to-life manner. Too often these gentlemen are presented in a 2-dimensional, cardboard fashion that makes it sound like geology has saints that geologists worship. I am particularly pleased with the inclusion of G.K. Gilbert and Gene Shoemaker. G.K. Gilbert is arguably the best geologist from the age of the Great Surveys and is well-known to most students of geology, but is often overlooked in popular writing [perhaps because laccoliths, isostatic rebound, ancient lake shores and deltas, and multiple working hypotheses aren't as sexy as boat trips down the Colorado River or the wonders of Yellowstone]. Gene Shoemaker has gotten more press lately due to the public's fascination with asteroids and comets crashing into the Earth in the past and Jupiter in the present, but his whole life story, including his status as the first planetary geologist and as trainer of the Moon men, deserves to be better known [for young people who are particularly taken with the life of Gene Shoemaker, I also recommend Shoemaker by Levy: The Man Who Made an Impact by David H. Levy]. The book is well-organized, with each chapter subdivided into sections headed by boldfaced subtitles. The book has several helpful appendices that present the reader with a Geologic Time Scale, a cross-section of the Earth, and a map of the Earth's tectonic plates. There is also a glossary, a thorough bibliography, and a well-done index. This book should be in every elementary school and middle school library in the country and would be an excellent gift for the budding geologist.

Book Description
James Baker Hall's blackly comic coming-of-age novel has been denied, by unfortunate circumstances surrounding its original 1964 publication, its rightful place alongside classics such as Catcher in the Rye and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in the canon of essential late-twentieth-century American fiction.
Set in Lexington, Kentucky, the story unfolds through the eyes of thirteen-year-old Yates Paul. He becomes consumed with revelations about his inattentive father's loneliness, his grandmother's stormy relationship with his boisterous alcoholic uncle, and the frustration of being the best photography assistant in town when no one else knows it. In pursuing his career and falling in love with women twice his age, the precocious Yates falls back on Walter Mittyesque daydreams to cope with a frequently humorous, sometimes dark, world.
Long respected among literary insiders, sought after but nearly impossible to obtain, this "lost" classic will finally reach the wider audience it deserves.
