Great title with no content.......2006-11-10

Book can impress anybody with a great title but there is no content inside. I was disappointed to see half written resumes and that too did not follow any resume writing conventions. It is absolute waste of money and does not deserve single star.

This book is a good source of sample finance resumes. Other good and recommended resources for finance careers are the Vault Guide to the Top Finance Firms, the Vault Career Guide to Investment Banking, and the Vault Guide to Finance Interviews. Also try the harvard guide to finance careers.

VGM Misses the Point.......2000-11-20

It is not surprising that this book is about 70% sample resumes. However, only about 1 in 10 resumes focused on the type of individual who would need this guide the most: students graduating college. Most of the resume examples were of CFO's, Executive officers and others with lots of experience. This book had very little insight in how to structure your resume to be set apart from the other 10,000 graduates looking for the same jobs. The sample cover letters posed the same problem with only about 5 out of the 30 or so letters from college graduates. The rest was coming from executives looking to change jobs. For people already established who haven't touched their own resume in 30 years, this book may be helpful, but for those of us who are trying to tweek our resume to stand out, this book is not very helpful and you most surely will get your 13 bucks worth.

Useful guide.......1998-11-29

This book is quite useful for a finance job search. Another good guide on the subject is the Vault Reports Guide to Investment Banking, which includes actual finance interview questions and answers.

Excellent Discussion of Multivariate Statistics.......2000-06-09

This textbook is a pleasant surprise. It is an excellent introduction to multivariate analysis, much better than I have encountered elsewhere. As the title indicates, the examples are geological such as analysis of spatial distribution of geological features, geochemical analysis, sediment transportation problems, paleontological sampling issues, stratigraphic sequence comparisons, fluvial pattern analysis, etc.

Davis provides a chapter on matrix algebra, emphasizing the mathematical operations that underlie trend surface analysis, principal components, and discriminant functions. I found his geometric approach to eigenvalues and eigenvectors to be more intuitive than traditional algebraic approaches found in most linear algebra texts. I also like the discussion on determinants. I suspect that a reader unfamiliar with matrices and linear algebra might find this introduction to be too concise and a bit overwhelming. But as a review, the chapter was really quite good.

More than 350 pages are devoted to the final three chapters - Analysis of Sequence Maps, Map Analysis, and Analysis of Multivariate Data. These three chapters provide an exceptional discussion of advanced statistical techniques. The mathematics are well explained and the techniques are described in detail, including pitfalls in the mis-application of the various statistical methods.

My copy (14th printing, first edition) includes a section on Fortran IV programming and scatters some Fortran examples across various chapters. While this feature somewhat dates the text, it is at most a distraction and can easily be skipped without any loss of understanding of the statistical methods. The Fortran sections may not have been retained in the second edition (1986). This newer edition apparently provides updated coverage on probability, non-parametric statistics, and Fourier analysis and adds coverage of kriging methods.

Appropriate for those interested in Data Analysis found in geology, geography, or geographics.

Short in Theory Description.......2001-03-27

Being a graduate student, I don't much like this book. The theory description is not nough, and there're some mistakes in the Matlab programs. For the propose of partice and technique application, this book is not bad, but for those students really want to know much about data analysis, this book is not quite enough.

matlab - not just for earthies.......2000-06-17

The title of this excellent book is inappropriate. It should be "Data analysis using Matlab" or perhaps "Data Analysis in the Physical Sciences using Matlab", since the material is quite general and the book will be useful to many folks outside Earth Science.

Matlab is fast becoming the lingua franca for data analysis in many branches of physical science and engineering. How far it will spread beyond this domain is a question. It remains to be seen whether biologists, psychologists and the like, will give up their point/click interfaces. And at the other end of the scale, high-level users will continue to eschew matlab for more application-specific languages (e.g. S+ and R for statistics) and more efficient languages (e.g. fortran for ocean-modelling runs that take months of CPU time). However, there is a vast range of users who find that matlab is a tool that fits the hand well. You'd be hard-pressed to find a physical-science laboratory without well-thumbed Matlab manuals scattered among the fortran manuals and the tables of integrals.

Until recently, the problem with matlab has been a lack of good books telling how to use it in real-world applications. Matlab usage has spread mainly by word of mouth. That's terrific for high-level researchers since any form of communication (even about silly syntax errors) may very well lead to fruitful collaboration. But it's not so good for students, who need texts that start from the ground up, using matlab at every stage. Why should students learn data-analysis techniques from textbooks that are "language-neutral", when they are most likely to be using matlab when they enter the research community? Wouldn't it make more sense for them to learn about fast fourier transforms, fractals, etc., by actually doing computations instead of reading about computations, by actually drawing graphs instead of looking at them?

All of this makes me wonder why the market hasn't been flooded with great books about using matlab in science. But it hasn't.

Middleton's book thus fills an important gap. In it you'll read a bit about probability, regression, principal component analysis, cluster analysis, time series, spatial mapping, fractals, etc. In other words, Middleton touches on many of the tools and techniques that are used daily in the physical sciences. The key is that he gives matlab examples of all that he does. (As you'd expect, these are on an enclosed floppy disk.)

His approach is long on example and short on proof, and many readers will like this. I am a professor, and I'm not sure that I'd be happy using this book alone in a course, because of the "short on proof" aspect. But I may be an old fuddy-duddy. And, it must be admitted that a lot of science today is of the "hey, let's try this cool technique in our field" variety. (Who, of a certain age, has not seen catastrophe theory, chaos theory, fractal theory, wavelet theory, etc., wash over our fields like waves upon an unwet beach?)

This is the worst book I've ever read........2003-04-09

I don't think I'm going to make it. I'm on the 'Humor' chapter, which begins, 'Humor is a funny thing...'
Are you kidding me? Most of this stuff doesn't deserve to be called an essay, let alone be published and distributed. From the back of the book: ...takes your emotions on a roller coaster ride of short stories and anecdotes...people really are alike...laugh out loud?...a gift to everyone who is tired of the anxious, misbegotten choruses that flood bookstores.
Who are these people? This guy writes like Andy Rooney without the charm or sophistication. Does Mr. Lazzarini believe he deserves kudos for fathering a child and then seeing her once a year? It's as if he never read anything himself and then decided one day that his unique view on the world needed to be unleashed. If you're going to call a chapter, "GOD", then at least put some meat into it. These are musings that someone may have before they've shaken off a good deep sleep, slammed a cup of coffee and taken a poop (sorry, I'm censoring myself already). After the poop, you should be able to think clearly. Can anyone imagine what the meetings regarding this garbage were like?

Each story took me from one emotion to another. One minute I found myself bursting out loud with laugher and a few pages later I was on the edge of my seat gripped with anticipation. This book is from the heart and I loved it. What a refreshing experience !

Attention English Teachers!.......1999-05-28

Here's a book that will inspire your kids to set down their own ideas and feelings. Mr. Lazzarini still expresses their kind of innocence and idealism, even though he's a real grownup. In this collection he covers a broad range of emotions, from the deep horror of being in the very, whirling, center of combat in Vietnam, to the anguish of separation from one you love, to wistful longing for things lost, to an insanely comic flight of fantasy involving a set of magnets and a tie. His direct, unpretentious writing left me with pictures so vivid that I can see each scene in all its detail just by recalling the subject. It reminds me of Dashiell Hammett's ability to photograph the action in words. This book is too short. Send us more, Tony.

Almost what the doctor ordered.......1999-01-24

This book is not as witty, funny or meaningful as I thought and hoped it would be. There are a few good one-liners, but over all the book is not good. I was hoping for something along the lines of a Robert Fulghum collection, but these essays fall hopelessly short. Knowing people have purchased (and enjoyed) this book, almost makes me want to publish a collection myself.

A wonderful book filled with lifes humor and ironies........1998-08-16

The authors experiences, observations, and hearty zest for life, are reflected in this collection of humorous, thought prevoking short stories. Profound whimsy at its best. A treasure to be read again and again.
