Book Description
How does the Israeli criminal justice system treat its most significant minority group--the Arabs? This book explores the functioning of Israel's criminal justice system in the context of the volatile relationship between Jews and Arabs in Israel and the conflict between Jews and the Palestinians of the occupied territories. Examining decisions at each juncture of the system, the authors study the question of whether the system treats Arabs fairly and equally or discriminates against them. Aware of the potentially volatile nature of the subject, the authors have taken care to make the book methodologically sound and their findings level-headed. Their study shows that despite legislative efforts to protect minority rights and treat all citizens as equals, these goals are not always achieved. Arabs are treated differently in the criminal justice system.

Book Description
This book describes in detail the current, state-of-the-art numerical treatment and simulation of multiphase flows in porous media. The porous media considered range from ordinary to fractured and deformable media, the models treated from single-phase compressible flow to multiphase multicomponent flow with mass interchange, while the computational algorithms encompass everything from classical iterative solvers to modern multigrid and domain decomposition approaches. Addressing many problems originating from the applied geosciences, the book focuses on their common mathematical and computational aspects. It will serve as an excellent research reference for all geoscientists, mathematicians, physicists, and engineers who work in the mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of multiphase flows in porous media.
Book Description
Side A: Laney's Going Solo
Laney has just finished graduate school in California and sees her cross-country drive as the perfect chance to reflect on the past before facing her future back East. With 3,000 miles ahead of her and a box of mix tapes as her only companion, she envisions a trip spent reminiscing; whether it's her first camp kisses, high school parties and crushes, or college loves and losses, Laney's most treasured memories -- good and bad -- are all just a song away.
Side B: A Change of Tune
Laney's mother, in town for graduation, thinks a mother-daughter road trip sounds like much more fun than going it alone -- and Laney can hardly refuse. Soon, she's giving her mother a crash course not only in pop music of the '70s and '80s but also in her own life...for somehow Mom doesn't know her daughter as well as she'd like to. Together, as America whizzes by, Laney and her mother are turning up the volume of their relationship...and learning that there's nothing more revealing than the soundtrack of our lives.

Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind.......2005-10-21
Have you ever known someone whose life seems so wonderful that you can't help wishing something really bad would happen to them? That's what "Liner Notes" is. In fact, I've invented a whole new term to describe the reading of this book: reverse catharsis. Everyone in this book is so happy and well-adjusted that it makes you think your own life is pretty rotten by comparison.
The story is that Laney's mother suffered from cancer through Laney's childhood. Now as Laney is going back to Boston to start a new job, her mom invites herself along on Laney's cross-country drive from San Francisco to Boston so they can bond. I'd like to say at this point they have a bunch of adventures or do anything mildly interesting, but pretty much they reminisce over a box of mix tapes. Their journey across America is so bland and vague it could have been written by someone who'd only read about the USA from AAA guidebooks.
Exhibit A is when Laney and Mom detour to Las Vegas. Now since they're in Sin City you think all sorts of wild things could happen to them. All they wind up doing is playing the slots for a couple hours, eating at a buffet, and sipping margaritas on a balcony, where of course there's another mix tape flashback.
The overall problem with this book is what I mentioned in the beginning. Everyone is happy and well-adjusted. Laney's mom had cancer, but has now made a full recovery. Laney's brother is in medical school and on his way to being a doctor. Laney's father runs a very successful pottery business. Laney has good relations with all of them. The only problem is Laney and her mom weren't extremely close and Laney hasn't found the love of her life yet, a problem we know will be solved from Page 1.
There's hardly anything even remotely close to drama or conflict in this book. The one possibility is that Laney gets pregnant with "Crappy Jeremy" and has an abortion. You'd think that would make for something interesting, but this issue is quickly buried and forgotten. Otherwise, Laney and her mom get along so well that a cross-country trip to "bond" seems pointless. There are no obstacles thrown in their way so the outcome is never in doubt.
Then of course the last 30 pages go into full summary mode with the tacked-on overly happy ending. Anyone with half a brain could have seen that coming. Everything works out so wonderfully for everyone that you expect them to form a chorus line and break out into song. It made me want to scream.
Overall this book is so light, so shallow, and so uneventful that it gets tiresome waiting for SOMETHING to happen, only to learn nothing does. Even Lifetime movies of the week have some kind of drama. But if you want a cozy little book to give you a warm fuzzy and reassure you about how good and wonderful the world is, this is your book. This is excellent beach/airplane reading for those who don't want want to be excited at all. People on high-blood pressure medicine maybe.
It's not to say that I absolutely hated this book. I thought it was very NICE. Far too nice. I liked all the characters, but as I described in the beginning, I started to jealously wish something very bad would befall them.
To read a far more interesting story of a young woman coping with issues, I suggest "The Dive From Clausen's Pier" by Ann Packer.
The Best Mix Tape in Print.......2005-06-27
Laney gets a new job after graduate school and plans on driving cross-country by herself, listening to her old mix tapes and enjoying the solitude. Her mother surprises Laney by asking if she can along for the ride. Her lymphoma caused her to miss out on a great deal of her daughter's life, and now in remission, she wants to reconnect with her eldest child. Every tape Laney plays has a story to tell, be it from summer camp or college, and each tape is filled with golden oldies, music from her childhood, and modern tunes as well. This book is a rare one - the gimmick is actually well-executed, making this story as good as it sounds. With realistic characters, fantastic flashbacks, and a great soundtrack, you are sure to laugh, cry and sing along with Laney as you read her Liner Notes.
A Movie Waiting to Happen.......2005-04-02
This book is so visual, so immediate. Laney and her mother are an example of the modern mother-daughter pairing - they want to be close but years of distance and illness have kept them from relating. Music, the American scenery, and the open plan of the road trip make for an emotional, funny, poignant, and real reunion. Liner Notes is so clear in the reader's mind that it's like watching a film, but getting to see all the footage. A winning read!
Great book about mother daughter relationships.......2004-05-18
I'm pretty sure one reason I really loved this book is because of the main character, Laney...I swear she could be me or one of my high school or college friends. I am 29 and the time frame lines up with mine as does the narrator's outlook while growing up. I love the way she gradually opens up her tapes to her mom and lets her know what she missed in her daugher's life when she was battling her sickness. The only reason I docked it one star is because it was very predictable and anti-climatic in the end. It also seems to fastforward in the end in a way that does not match the rest of the book. Otherwise, I read it quickly and related to it immediately. Great quick read!
LOVED IT!.......2004-05-08
I came across this book in my local indie store and was immediatly drawn in. The writing is fluid and funny, the story insteresting, and Laney (the main character) is someone I'd like to meet. I knew most of the music mentioned in the book, though there were some songs that I'd never heard of - I plan on giving the book to my mom for mother's day.

Book Description
A Tribe Called Quest • Beastie Boys • De La Soul • Eric B. & Rakim • The Fugees • KRS-One • Pete Rock & CL Smooth • Public Enemy • The Roots • Run-DMC • Wu-Tang Clan • and twenty-five more hip-hop immortals
It’s a sad fact: hip-hop album liners have always been reduced to a list of producer and sample credits, a publicity photo or two, and some hastily composed shout-outs. That’s a damn shame, because few outside the game know about the true creative forces behind influential masterpieces like PE’s It Takes a Nation of Millions. . ., De La’s 3 Feet High and Rising, and Wu-Tang’s Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). A longtime scribe for the hip-hop nation, Brian Coleman fills this void, and delivers a thrilling, knockout oral history of the albums that define this dynamic and iconoclastic art form.
The format: One chapter, one artist, one album, blow-by-blow and track-by-track, delivered straight from the original sources. Performers, producers, DJs, and b-boys–including Big Daddy Kane, Muggs and B-Real, Biz Markie, RZA, Ice-T, and Wyclef–step to the mic to talk about the influences, environment, equipment, samples, beats, beefs, and surprises that went into making each classic record. Studio craft and street smarts, sonic inspiration and skate ramps, triumph, tragedy, and take-out food–all played their part in creating these essential albums of the hip-hop canon.
Insightful, raucous, and addictive, Check the Technique transports you back to hip-hop’s golden age with the greatest artists of the ’80s and ’90s. This is the book that belongs on the stacks next to your wax.
“Brian Coleman’s writing is a lot like the albums he covers: direct, uproarious, and more than six-fifths genius.”
–Jeff Chang, author of Can’t Stop Won’t Stop
“All producers and hip-hop fans must read this book. It really shows how these albums were made and touches the music fiend in everyone.”
–DJ Evil Dee of Black Moon and Da Beatminerz
“A rarity in mainstream publishing: a truly essential rap history.”
–Ronin Ro, author of Have Gun Will Travel
Customer Reviews:
A must have for hip hop fans.......2007-09-27
This book is essential for any fan of hip hop. It goes through classic albums track by track, and the forwards at the beginning of each chapter, describing where the artist, the music, and america was at the time of the albums creation, are very interesting themselves. The writing is competent, which is all we need since it is mostly interview style writing and the words are coming directly from the artist (and in some cases, industry execs) involved. Of course the choice of albums could have been different, some were unecessary (the Marley Marl record which only made it because of the track "The Symphony") and some just werent classic (Poor Righteous Teachers? huh?) but most are undeniable classics and have so much lore and mystery surrounding them it is nothing less than a blessing that Brain Coleman uncovered the story behind these records. Of course there are crucial records he left out, but i assume that he's saving those for the sequel.
Essential.......2007-08-13
If you really love hip hop you'll buy this book... You already own all of the records covered, right? Right.
True School Document.......2007-07-20
I bought Mr. Coleman's 'Rakim Told Me' when it first came out and was very impressed, so naturally I was excited when I heard he had an expanded volume in the works. This book is a true gem for real hip hop heads looking for anecdotal stories on the histories of their favorite groups/albums as well as an impressive examination of the many facets of the creative process as told by the artists themselves.
This book is also a must for anyone with aspirations to make hip hop music, as it shows that there is much more to creating a classic album than simply rhyming 16 bars over a hot beat. Blood, sweat and tears; as well as lots of luck and a healthy dose of serendipity also play a major role in making an album come together in the right way.
But, as essential as this book is, it's not without its disappointments. Sometimes Coleman gets artists to focus on albums that don't actually represent their best work. Examples: The Geto Boys discussing 'We Can't be Stopped' instead of 'Grip it on That Other Level'. Or Redman's rather shallow examination of 'Whut? Thee Album' when 'Dare is a Darkside' would have been a much more interesting read. And I would have much rather seen the Beastie Boys explain their masterpiece 'Paul's Boutique' instead of 'Check your Head'. But these are minor quibbles. Much more glaring is the ommission of the brilliant Ultramagnetic MCs chapter concerning 'Critical Beatdown' which was one of the highlights of "Rakim Told Me" but is inexplicably absent from the new volume.
Of course, there are also classic albums that didn't make the cut for whatever reason. I would have loved to have seen a chapter on Black Sheep's 'A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing' or Ice Cube's 'Amerikkka's Most Wanted'. Alas, like Mr. Coleman says, you can't please everybody.
But all the nit-picking complaints are totally overshadowed by the excellence of the book on a whole. Many of the interviews are truly eye opening and reveal details about albums and artists that one would have never guessed or imagined. Who knew that Jarobi was absent from most Tribe Called Quest recording sessions because he was more passionate about the culinary arts? Or that NASA had to issue an official statement saying Sex Packets weren't real? The book is full of bizarre tid-bits like these and they're what make the stories great.
The artists themselves are completely candid and (for the most part) check their egos at the door. Oftentimes you get the feeling this may be the first time they've ever sat for an interview and been totally forthcoming without having to be "on" or in character. It's refreshing to see your favorite artists, who in the past may have seemed mysterious or larger than life, be revealed as regular Joes.
Props to Mr. Coleman for having the passion to see this project through and providing all us fans with an original and essential hip hop document. And hopefully Volume 2 won't be too long in coming.
Shining Up The Brightest Diamond, Making It World Class.......2007-07-06
"Rakim Told Me" was a sparkling introductory EP -- this is the triple CD set of utter journalistic brilliance. If you already own the blueprint ("Rakim") and don't think you need to add this fantastic construction to your collection, you are missing out on some of the best real-music reporting and analysis, ever. Way up there with the best of Tosches, Sante, the Ego Trip books, "Can't Stop Won't Stop," and many others of my very favorite books of all time, Mr. Coleman has crafted a prime jewel of You Are There and What This Means writing. But unlike recent unedited hack oral histories, he embeds the situations in actual narrative and extrapolates coherently about everything that went down. If you love hip-hop and are a fan of pop music writing but wonder why it never gets on the inside, here is your chance to dig into the one book (I think) that really does. A major ahcievement.
very good - just one beef..........2007-06-14
I love both of Mr. Coleman's books - this one and Rakim Told Me: Hip-Hop Wax Facts, Straight From the Original Artists. Great writing and loads of great info on some of my favorite albums.
one major quibble on this new book though... 15 of it's 36 chapters are also present in Mr. Colman's previous book, Rakim Told Me (21 total chapters)! I wasn't expecting this... I was expecting all new material... i didn't get that...
a bit disappointed, however the remaining 21 chapters are ace, and well worth a read.

Book Description
"There is no such thing as fun for the entire family."--Jerry Seinfeld. That's an example of a one-liner. It packs a wealth of meaning into a few words and produces a chuckle along with its wisdom. Here's another one: "My luck--I was waiting at the airport when my ship came in."--Henny Youngman. There are many more laugh-inducing one-liners like these in this collection! Some are attributed to famous people; others have no source. They span many different topics. One thing's for sure. These one-liners not only say something, but they say it in a memorable way. Here are two more: * "Money is better than poverty, if only for financial reasons."--Woody Allen. * "I was so ugly as a kid we never had a jack-o'-lantern. They just stuck me in the window."--Rodney Dangerfield. Perrett lives in Westlake Village, GA. 512 pages, 4 3/16 x 5 1/4.

this book isn't very funny unless you laugh over pickles having mold on them...
A little book produces BIIIIIIIIG laughs!!!.......2001-08-27
I have to admit I was highly skeptical when I bought this book. I buy lots of joke books (I'm an entertainer) and a lot of times if I circle the jokes I liked I find I circled one of two. NOT IN THIS ONE! This is truly a "little giant encyclopedia": small but quite THICK. These aren't jokes jokes that go on forever but short, punchy one-liners. And although this book DOES have some from famous current and legendary comedy mavens, it has a LOT of original stuff. Gene Perret (Bob Hope's former writer who has a lot of GREAT books he has penned himself) compiled and wrote this with Terry Marin -- and all I can say is that a "jaded" entertainer like me read this and laughed out loud. You can use these one-liners in your conversations with friends (remember that many of the BEST ad libs you see on tv are rehearsed!), for a speech, toast, roast etc. There are new ones such as: "I told my doctor I couldn't lift my hands above my head. He told me to stay away from muggers," and "He wore a toupee that made him look 10 years sillier." And there are ones from comedy pros: "She's so fat she's got more chins than the Chinese phone directory." (Joan Rivers) and "He's so old his blood type is discontinued." (Bill Dana)Jokes are divided into categories and there's a nice index so you can look up what you want when you need it. Bottom line: super quality...super-value...convenient size!
