THE AUTHORS ARE VERY WORRIED ABOUT THE PARLOUS STATE OF THE WORLD FINANCIAL SYSTEM AFTER "FREE CAPITAL" PRIVATIZATION, DEREGULATION, AND THE GOALS AND SHIBBOLETHS OF THE MAJOR GOVERMENTS FOR THE PAST DECADE. THIS IS A TECHNICAL ACCOUNT OF WHY THE STATUS QUO WILL VERY LIKELY PRODUCE DISASTER. DESPITE THE INHIBITED TONE OF THE WRITING, THIS IS A WARNING TO ALL: ECONOMIC DISASTER IS THE MOST PROBABLE OUTCOME OF ALL THE CHANGES THAT HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE WORLD ECONOMY SINCE 1971 AND THE COLLAPSE OF THE BRETTON WOODS SYSTEM. This book finds serious deficiencies with the by now extensive system of committees, organizations, rules, and guidelines that have emerged to govern and manage the international financial system. Concretely, it suggests that the existing framework, based on the supervision of individual financial institutions (especially banks), fails to take adequate account of the negative macroeconomic consequences that may flow from the financial failures of particular institutions. Even worse, emerging rules (such as the Basel II guidelines for minimum bank capital) may actually increase systemic fragility by making financial institutions more homogeneous in their behavior, leading to abrupt disruptions (financial crises) following periods of apparent but fragile stability. In making its central argument, the book offers informative coverage of the International Monetary Fund, the Basel committees on banking, the Asian financial crises, bankruptcy, the legal aspects of the system for settlement of payments, and many other relevant topics.

Great discovery on Pogonomyrmex taxonomy.......2000-10-09
Dr. Taber has come up with a practical and informative narrative style that told me everything I couldn't find elsewhwere in a straight forward, convincing manner. I am persuaded that the chromosone distinction he has drawn between the Pogos and Ephobos is a conclusive evidence of different genera and a more scientific key than the often jumbled attempts to describe morphological characteristics which leave much to be desired.
I am curious who did his excellent ant drawings? If one were to focus in on the gasters depicted, and could use these reliably and with ease under a microscope, it would certainly be a lot quicker to identify specimens than looking for offset teeth, non-concentric rugae or trying to differentiate amongst verbal descriptions of epinotal armature when a single species may have more than one variety of worker in the same colony.
Mr. Taber's book is a must for any serious myrmecologist or wanna-be scientist. My own work on the diet and nutrition of horned lizards (Phrynosoma) led me to this excellent book. I would like to talk to and/or meet Dr. Taber and commend him personally for opening the door to my better understanding of Neartic harvester ants.
Buy this book. Don't even think about it. It is positively the latest thinking and best for its manageble size on the market.

**Strengths: distribution maps for species in North and South America, good history of early researchers, nice cladograms, nice drawings of all species, brief descriptions of behavior and habits of ants in North and South America, fun to read. **Weaknesses: not comprehensive, keys are difficult, does not directly address Bolton's synonomy of Pogonomyrmex and Ephebomyrmex

This study covers the world outlook for commercial turf and grounds sod cutters and harvesters excluding mowing equipment across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

WHAT IS LATENT DEMAND AND THE P.I.E.?
The concept of latent demand is rather subtle. The term latent typically refers to something that is dormant, not observable, or not yet realized. Demand is the notion of an economic quantity that a target population or market requires under different assumptions of price, quality, and distribution, among other factors. Latent demand, therefore, is commonly defined by economists as the industry earnings of a market when that market becomes accessible and attractive to serve by competing firms. It is a measure, therefore, of potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) or total revenues (not profit) if a market is served in an efficient manner. It is typically expressed as the total revenues potentially extracted by firms. The “market” is defined at a given level in the value chain. There can be latent demand at the retail level, at the wholesale level, the manufacturing level, and the raw materials level (the P.I.E. of higher levels of the value chain being always smaller than the P.I.E. of levels at lower levels of the same value chain, assuming all levels maintain minimum profitability).
The latent demand for commercial turf and grounds sod cutters and harvesters excluding mowing equipment is not actual or historic sales. Nor is latent demand future sales. In fact, latent demand can be lower either lower or higher than actual sales if a market is inefficient (i.e., not representative of relatively competitive levels). Inefficiencies arise from a number of factors, including the lack of international openness, cultural barriers to consumption, regulations, and cartel-like behavior on the part of firms. In general, however, latent demand is typically larger than actual sales in a country market.

Diminishing water resources are becoming of increasing concern because in many countries the sources of drinking water are close to being exhausted. Therefore, there is an urgent need to study and assess the various components of global water resources, of which freshwater lakes are one of the most important. This book discusses contemporary limnological problems on a local, regional and global scale with special emphasis on the application of remote-sensing techniques to monitor lake dynamics, thermodynamics, biodynamics and water quality. An interactive approach is used to assess various processes from both the numerical modelling and observational standpoints. The authors recommend a combined use of in situ and remote-sensing data, giving a specific comparative analysis of the lakes of north-western Russia and the American Great Lakes as an illustration. The role of GIS is discussed and emphasised.
