Book Description
"This book, Measuring Market Risk with Value at Risk by Vipul Bansal and Pietro Penza, has three advantages over earlier works on the subject. First, it takes a decidedly global approach-an essential ingredient for any comprehensive work on market risk. Second, it ties the scientifically grounded, yet intuitively appealing, VaR measure to earlier, more idiosyncratic measures of market risk that are used in specific market environs (e.g., duration in fixed income). Finally, it encompasses all of the accepted approaches to calculating a VaR measure and presents them in a clearly explained fashion with supporting illustrations and completely worked-out examples." -from the Foreword by John F. Marshall, PhD, Principal, Marshall, Tucker & Associates, LLC
"Measuring Market Risk with Value at Risk offers a much-needed intellectual bridge, a translation from the esoteric realm of mathematical finance to the domain of financial managers who seek guidance in applying developments from this important field of research as well as that of MBA-level graduate instruction. I believe the authors have done a commendable job of providing a carefully crafted, highly readable, and most useful work, and intend to recommend it to all those involved in business risk management applications." -Anthony F. Herbst, PhD, Professor of Finance and C.R. and D.S. Carter Chair, The University of Texas, El Paso and Founding editor of The Journal of Financial Engineering (1991-1998)
"Finally there's a book that strikes a balance between rigor and application in the area of risk management in the banking industry. This innovative book is a MUST for both novices and professionals alike." -Robert P. Yuyuenyongwatana, PhD, Associate Professor of Finance, Cameron University
"Measuring Market Risk with Value at Risk is one of the most complete discussions of this emerging topic in finance that I have seen. The authors develop a logical and rigorous framework for using VaR models, providing both historical references and analytical applications." -Kevin Wynne, PhD, Associate Professor of Finance, Lubin School of Business, Pace University

A Good Read!.......2004-04-30
This book is a detailed and meticulous presentation of the calculations involved in Value at Risk (VaR) measurement. According to authors Pietro Penza and Vipul K. Bansal, Value at Risk is one of the most popular approaches to measuring the risk of harm to financial portfolios. It is a valuable institutional tool. Be aware, though, the book's message and how-to assistance will seem generally irrelevant to individual investors, except for a handful of extremely high net worth individuals at the top of the Forbes 400. Its calculations are beyond the ken of most non-mathematicians, but they will intrigue the right audience. We find this book to be a useful addition to the libraries of professional investors, bankers or risk managers, particularly those with highly developed analytical skills and a certain degree of comfort with financial engineering. Some other financial managers and lay readers will find useful information here, though they may need to walk on tiptoes through those sections of the content that are over their heads.

Unclear, and full of errors........2003-06-16
I stopped reading this book after the first 7 chapters. It's easy going conceptually, but manages to be very irritating for the following reasons: The "definitions" are often confusing and unilluminating, although the examples that follow generally manage to get the idea across. There are also a large number of mathematical errors, which I was able to clear up only because I'm already familiar with the essentials of VaR. As a first introduction, the book is therefore useless. Perhaps the remaining 10 chapters of the book are of sterling quality -- to hedge against this eventuality I award two stars, rather than just one -- but I will be seeking another source.
[And shame, shame, shame on Wiley Finance's editors. Apart from the above errors, here are just two howlers that prove that the book was published before anybody read it: "Neper's number" for e (Napier?), "phenomene" as plural of phenomena (which would have made a kind of grammatical sense weren't it for the fact that phenomena is alread the plural of phenomenon.) No doubt Wiley Finance believes that sales are unaffected by reputation.]
Very Comprehensive, But too few examples.......2001-06-24
Penza and Bansal has done a good work on making a whole picture of Market Risk Measurement. With the clear explanation, it helps the beginners to quickly grasp the concept on Market Risk Measurement. It is well organized in 16 chapters, beginning with a few chapters on financial risk management in banking, including a review on the traditional Asset/ Liability Management. The review on Mathematical and statistical techniques is very well described. The authors also explained the analysis of pricing financial assets, including Fixed-income, equity, and derivative. Finally, they show the common methodologies to calculate VaR-Parametric, Historical Simulation and Monte Carlo Simulation.
I considered this book as a good literature review on Value at Risk, but not the step-by-step one. It provides complete set of formulas but too few examples. I recommend for beginning- and intermediate-level readers who want to know the overall concept of Value at Risk.

ECO AG IN THA TROPICS YEAH.......2004-04-21
We'll this book is great. It explains ways in which to farm ecologically in the tropics. The mulch techniques are very sound. Data is let known about the species which are used and the countries in which certain systems are lived in. Bascially about systems. Its a shame that the book went out of print. If you would like to get a copy i know a seller e-mail me at theorganicfarmer@yahoo.com peace
Magnificent Book !.......2001-04-25
Dr. Thurston describes in a clear, simple and accesible way various sustainable agriculture systems used around the world. The book has a "direct to the point" approach, perfect for a begginner. It is complete, objective and didn't fall into the anecdotic. It truly helped me and showed a real way to do sustainable agriculture.

Book Description
Vegetation Mapping Edited by Roy Alexander Environment Research Group, Department of Geography, Chester College, UK and Andrew C. Millington Department of Geography, University of Leicester, UK The past decade has witnessed a resurgence of interest and activity in the mapping of vegetation that has been driven by the needs of environmental modellers and policy makers on the one hand and by the increased availability of data sets and sophisticated tools for their handling and analysis on the other. This increased activity, together with the greater variety of purposes for which vegetation maps are being produced, has led to a divergence of approaches, a wider range of entities being mapped and a more varied audience of end users. Over the same time period the researcher interested in vegetation mapping has had to consult an ever-broadening range of sources in order to keep abreast of developments in the field. This book seeks to provide a review of recent developments in vegetation mapping and the purposes for which it is carried out by bringing together a series of case studies covering techniques and their applications at a range of spatial scales. The work included covers scales of enquiry from the quadrat to the biome, studies based on data gathered from ground, air and space, and applications of mapping in temperate, semi arid and tropical environments. Issues involved in the use of data sets from different sources, the recognition and handling of error and the effects of scale are also given detailed consideration. The volume concludes with a review of contemporary approaches to vegetation mapping and the identification of some key research questions. Vegetation Mapping will thus serve as a collected source of reference on techniques and approaches for the researcher while providing a rich variety of case study and methodological information for postgraduate students and undergraduates following specialist courses.

Customer Reviews:
This is a sassy and fun novel!.......2005-08-04
Miriam Levy is of a certain age and admits it. She also contributes to her family, which is living lower than we all would expect in Beverly Hills, by authoring celebrities' cookbooks. Miriam is currently collaborating with Kimberly on A Starlet's Secrets of Sexy Cooking and is longing to pen her own cookbook.
Miriam is mom to college-bound twins Jake and Emma and to Lisa, a news reporter who is pregnant, unmarried, and wants her mother to be the full-time babysitter so she can concentrate on her career; wife to Alan, a former struggling screenwriter; and daughter to the mother who might be moving in with her.
Miriam's best friend Kate is a wealthy florist who continues, after many years, to lust after the only man she believes she ever loved. After checking out Erik on the Internet and contacting him, Kate learns Erik is the ambassador to Malaysia, married, and still lusts after her. Kate decides to travel to see Erik, to test her long-lost love and the desires of her loins. She drags Miriam along, giving her the escape from family responsibilities that seem to be closing in on her well-defined life.
Will Kate find true love? Will Miriam find herself and learn to establish personal boundaries? Will the reader survive all the scrumptious recipes at the end of each chapter?
I chuckled throughout the book and will read another of Boorstin's novels. My only criticism is that so many books these days treat "cheating on a mate" and bed hopping as normal and acceptable. But that is just a personal observation.
Cookin' for Love's author, Sharon Boorstin, writes a sassy and fun novel with many interesting twists and turns that can be enjoyed by all.
YOU'RE GONNA' LOVE MIRIAM EPSTEIN LEVY !.......2005-06-19
You're gonna' love Miriam Epstein Levy! Who can resist a woman who freely admits her age and knows that almost 50 isn't the end of the world, the Terminal Z of life or the finish of romance? Knowing all of this is one thing, but Miriam proves it in Sharon Boorstin's funny, provocative "Cooking For Love."
Miriam more than makes ends meet by helping celebs pen cookbooks. Her latest being a collaboration with Kimberly on "A Starlets Secrets of Sexy Cooking." Miriam also is Mom to two teenagers, Jake and Emma. Jake, of the spiked hair that gleams like a "freshly waxed floor, size 12 Doc Martens, and jeans worn so low that his boxers peek out, feels especially deprived since he's the only one in his Beverly Hills crowd that drives a Volvo. Emma isn't any more conservative - she boasts a lime green streak through her hair and stud earrings carpeting the rims of her ear.
Kate McGrath, Miriam's best friend, is not so much interested in food or mothering as she is in running her Santa Barbara flower shop and yearning for the only man she ever truly loved - Erik, a handsome Swiss charmer she met shortly after college.
Thanks to the Internet, Google, and the intervention of Jake, Erik becomes more than just Kate's fantasy, and the two begin a correspondence. When he invites Kate to come and visit him in Malaysia, she talks Miriam into going with her. That's where the fun and surprises really begin as these two embark on a journey of the heart.
Sharon Boorstin, also the author of a memoir/cookbook, "Let Us Eat Cake," includes 20 definitely delicious recipes in this tale of two women who could teach Auntie Mame a thing or two about life being a banquet.
Bon appetit!
- Gail Cooke
Decadent Descriptions.......2005-01-17
From the first sentence I could tell this book was filled with life, originality and a love for cooking. As cookbook author Miriam Levy tries to decide between a low-fat and regular cheesecake the story of her life unfolds in all its vibrant detail. If you start to get hungry while reading this book, the recipes have all been included at the end of the chapters. When she travels to Malaysia with Kate McGrath we even learn how to make macaroons.
Cooking for Love has the flavor of a reality TV show and moments of warmth that seem so genuine, you will keep turning the pages to find out what happens next. There are innumerable twists and turns that make the story very unpredictable.
Sharon Boorstin's energetic writing style is infused with witty remarks and secret thoughts. As Miriam Levy is falling into her change of life stage, she seeks solace in the adventures of her best friend. As she escapes from an avalanche of family situations, she runs straight into the arms of danger itself.
If you love the Bridget Jones series or adore books with recipes and delicious descriptions of sexy recipes, then this book will find a way into your heart. I found myself laughing and generally more amused by this novel than I have been in a long time.
The choices the characters make seem to enhance the fantasy elements and while Kate's adventures are not explained in detail, Miriam Levy has some passionate dreams and sensual longings. At times it is so real, I forgot I was reading a novel.
Looking forward to reading: "Let Us Eat Cake." This authors writing style really appeals to me because it is infused with energy and decadent descriptions.
~The Rebecca Review
A great read!.......2004-12-14
This is a page turner! Don't be fooled, this book isn't just for women, nor is it a cook book. In fact, it's perfect for men who want to get a taste of what goes on inside the mind of a middle aged woman who is looking for love, sex and romance -- but not necessarily in that order. It's a funny story about a kidnapping that takes just the right amount of unexpected turns.
