Over the last decade, high-sensitivity calorimetry has developed from a specialist method used mainly by dedicated experts to a major, commercially available tool in the arsenal directed at understanding molecular interactions and stability. Calorimeters have now become commonplace in bioscience laboratories. As a result, the number of those proficient in experimentation in this field has risen dramatically, as has the range of experiments to which these methods have been applied. Applications extend from studies in small molecule and solvent biophysics, through drug screening to whole cell assays. The technology has developed to include higher levels of sensitivity (and hence smaller sample size requirements) and a drive towards high-throughput technology, creating a very large user base in both academia and the pharmaceutical industry. This book is a fully revised and updated edition of the successful Biocalorimetry:Applications of Calorimetry in the Biological Sciences, published in 1998. Since then, there have been many advances in the instrumentation as well as in its applications and methodology. There are general chapters highlighting the usage of the isothermal titration calorimeter and the differential scanning calorimeter, more advanced chapters on specific applications and tutorials that cover the idiosyncrasies of experimental methods and data analysis. The book draws these together to create the definitive biological calorimetric text book This book both explains the background to the method and describes novel, high-impact applications. It features works of interest to the experienced calorimetrist and the enthusiastic dilettante. The book should be of interest to all working in the field of biocalorimetry, from graduate students to researchers in academia and in industry.Customer Reviews:

Delivering Rights: How the Human Rights Act Is Working (Justice Series: Putting Rights into Practice)
Manufacturer: Hart Publishing (UK) ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 184113287X |
Book Description
As is well known the Human Rights Act 1998 (HRA) is a constitutional innovation, but can its scheme deliver? This timely and provocative book probes the extent to which the HRA is guaranteeing rights and whether it is transforming the legal landscape. This companion text to Understanding Human Rights Principles (Hart Publications 2001) is the culmination of a six-month project where key elements of the HRA were analysed and subjected to detailed scrutiny by expert practitioners and academics. The result is seven chapters of the highest quality which examine the following subjects including the reach of the Act and its jurisdictional scope and how to strike the balance under the HRA between interpretation and incompatibility. Two chapters look at remedies for breach of human rights. The first under the HRA and the second using Community law principles. The text then goes on to consider assessment of fact, due deference, and the wider impact of the Human Rights Act in administrative law. It then asks what is public power? And looks at the courts' approach to the public authority definition under the Act.
Finally access to court under the Human Rights Act is examined including standing, legal assistance and third party intervenors. The book's contributors are the leading experts in the field including Dinah Rose, Nathalie Lieven, Janet Kentridge, Kate Markus, Richard Clayton QC, Peter Roth QC, and Tim Owen QC. It provides an unparalleled examination of the scheme of the Human Rights Act and its component parts and it is of direct relevance to the practitioner and academic.

The Martian Climate Revisited: Atmosphere and Environment of a Desert Planet (Springer Praxis Books / Geophysical Sciences)
Peter L. Read , and Stephen R. Lewis Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 354040743X |
Book Description
The atmosphere and climate of Mars is a crucial factor, both for understanding the planet's past and appreciating the possibilities of its future. Given the high level of current interest in Mars, and the major advances afforded by recent space exploration, this book seeks to examine and review our knowledge and understanding of the meteorology and climate of Mars in its present state. This is based not only upon direct observations, but also on the newer techniques of modelling: numerical simulation and data assimilation. This authoritative discussion of Mars' atmosphere and climate gives a balanced review of some of the hottest issues concerning Mars' environments, its present and past climate and potential to support life, and its possible future following manned exploration.

Worthwhile for the "Everyday" cloud-watcher.......2003-04-21
There are also useful appendices like the Beaufort scale, and tornado safety rules in the back.
The only drawbacks are, the fact that this isn't a full-color guide: the color plates have been segregated to an insert around the middle of the book, which makes up perhaps an eighth of the book - if that (all other photos - the majority of the book - are in much less detailed and descriptive black and white); also, the illustration of severe weather is rather limited. We don't see features of a severe thunderstorm, or satellite images of a hurricane at its various stages of intensity (or an illustrated discussion of satellite pictures in general - this guide may be from 1981, but satellites existed then!), or the forms a tornado can take, or where one can form - we only have photos of distant, non-severe looking cumulonimbus (thunderstorm) clouds, a view of clouds around a hurricane taken from a plane (which isn't the perspective either a satellite or someone on the groud is going to have), and one photo of a tornado chosen for its historical merit only (it being the "first photo taken of a tornado," near Howard, SD on 8/28/1884 - an older photo, taken near either Garnett or Westphalia, KS on 4/26/1884, has since been found). [Regarding the thunderstorm/tornado images, I realize this isn't supposed to be a NOAA spotter's guide, therefore gospel, but a variety of images helps.]
But if a lack of color doesn't bother you, and you know your severe storms (or they don't bother you, either), this is a good field guide to have.

Climate Atlas of the Atlantic Ocean Derived From the Comprehensive Ocean Atmosphere Data Set (COADS) (With CD-ROM)
Ralf Lindau Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540668136 |
Book Description
The growing interest in climate and climatic change has renewed the demand for climate descriptions of the world oceans. Fields of climate variables are used as boundary conditions, or sea truth, for atmospheric and oceanic models and coupled models of the atmosphere-ocean system. The rapid improvements that modeling has made in recent years also call for more detailed descriptions of processes at the air-sea interface. The climate atlas presented here is restricted to the Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic is of special interest for two reasons: The cross-equatorial ocean heat transport is an outstanding climatic feature which contributes to the high sea-surface temperatures in the Northeastern North Atlantic and the mild climate of Europe. From a more technical point of view, the data coverage of the Atlantic is much denser than for other parts of the world oceans. Hence, the Atlantic can well serve as a reliable test area of sea truth for both modeling and satellite remote sensing.

Optical Solitons: Theory and Experiment (Cambridge Studies in Modern Optics)
Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521017793 |
Book Description
This book describes both theoretical and experimental aspects of optical soliton generation and of soliton properties. The basic theory of soliton generation in fiber is described, numerical studies of nonlinear propagation effects in fibers are considered, as well as soliton-soliton interactions, the effects of high order dispersion and birefringence on soliton propagation as well as limiting effects of femtosecond soliton generation. Technical aspects are concerned with long distance transmission systems and the implementation of high bit rate semiconductor laser based soliton systems in association with erbium doped fiber amplifiers. In addition, simple experimental schemes for soliton sources are described, while theoretical and experimental aspects of dark soliton production are included.
