Book Description

The Top Gun business model focuses on working with high net worth clientele.

In Top Gun Financial Sales, leading investment advisor D. Scott Kimball suggests that by dropping 80 percent of your clients and never taking on more than 50 clients financial salespeople can substantially increase their profits and production. Using the same principles taught to United States fighter pilots at Top Gun, Kimball created the Top Gun Sales Business Model. It is a model that accentuates the importance of working closely with a few high net worth individuals in lieu of trying to half heartedly serve thousands of smaller clients.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time or Your Money.......2003-11-25

This is a re-hash of the author's previous book. Trust me, if you've been in the business longer than a year, you've heard all of this before. In this case, the revolutionary idea is "having a small number of very affluent clients." Wow! What a novel idea!!! The title of the book should be 'How to Make A Bunch of Money Off Poor Schmucks Trying to Make a Bunch of Money.' A much better book is Duncan MacPherson's 'The Promise of The Future.' http://www.paretosystems.com/index.html is the web address. This guy should be ashamed.

4 out of 5 stars Some Ideas Unrealistic, But Sharpens Your Focus - Good Read.......2003-11-10

I have been in the financial services industry for almost 16 years, and have seen and read just about everything out there. I came upon Kimball's book after reading an excerpt in one of the industry's trade publications. It piqued my interest, so I went for the book.

Going after only those clients who would yield commissions of $250,000.00 per year or better is unrealistic - especially if those are the *only* clients you're seeking. It's fine to go "elephant hunting" (as it is commonly called) while building your client base with (what Kimball would call) "smaller" accounts of $500,000.00 to $5 million in assets. But to cut out 80% of your book when you're feeding a family of three or four or more is not realistic nor is it recommended.

By the same token, I agree 100% with Kimball that it is imperative to elminate clients and prospects who waste your time. Time is your greatest asset in this business, and you cannot afford to lose a single moment to an individual who does not want to either pay you or unconditionally accept your advise for a fee.

While I disagree with Kimball's philosophy regarding account size, shaving your book (I do - although not as drastically as depicted herein), or the number of accounts you should have, many of the ideas he brings forth (while not new) are fantastic when it comes to refining your focus regarding what you need to do day in and day out.

I think the book is worth it simply for the latter. All in all, a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Top Flight Advice.......2003-08-07

This advisor lays out some of the best thinking in the business. Really helps get you focused and think about your business in entirely different way. As you can see from the reviews below, some people just don't get it and never will, which Kimball admits in his book is one of the biggest issues he encounters - the inability of some people to accept responsibility for thier position in life and do something about it. I suggest everyone buy the book who is in the business - if you do 1/2 of what this guy says you need to do every day, you're business can't help but go up. My guess is that we'll encounter the reader from Cleveland at the counter at MacDonalds before the year is out.

1 out of 5 stars Would have given zero stars 00000.......2003-07-28

This book is a bunch of old hash. Has this advisor really done what he has written. If he is talking with only people who can give him $25,000 annually in fees or commissions, wouldn't you think his average account size is $2.5 at 1% ROA. So only 40 accounts to do a million. He stated in am email "When we are in a building mode, we are seeing as many as 40-60 new prospects every month, face to face. That is almost 3 appointments a day. When do you have time to call. I asked him a question via email about a script to use and received the following:..."We call them on the phone, identify ourselves, and ask them if they would have a half hour to meet with us in the next week or so. this makes them usually ask us why. So we tell them." I ask is this advice worth the asking price with a follow-up book on prospecting. I think NOT.

5 out of 5 stars Ideas that Work.......2003-05-01

I have read virtually every book dealing with how to grow as an advisor. This book is at or near the very top.
Many large firms are good at telling advisors WHAT to do but not HOW to do it. Mr. Kimball shares his experience and ideas, that given time will work. Any advisor, like Kimball, that has reinvented his business several times obviously understands how to find the money.

    Book Description

Raising money was one of the great successes of the Irish government, as the funds provided the "sinews of war" with which to fight Britain. This book details the history of the financing of the Irish revolution from both domestic and international loans. Divisions in Irish society over the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the creation of the Irish Free State led to the outbreak of the Civil War. The Free State's ability to deny the anti-Treaty forces access to the loan funds through a ten-year court battle would prove a powerful weapon in defeating the Republicans. The Dail government depended on the loans to finance their operations, and the failure of the anti-Treaty forces was due in part to their shortage of funds. International complications arose for the Free State when courts in Dublin and New York disagreed over dispersal of the money. Upon his return to government office, Eamon de Valera appealed to bond holders, particularly those in the United States, to give the loan money to him to found an opposition newspaper. Only when de Valera himself formed a government would all of the bond money be repaid. These events would raise questions of international law, and the results would shape Irish relations with the United States for a decade.

                          Book Description

Orbiting spacecraft provide a valuable laboratory for experiments on physical and biological systems in a reduced gravity environment. In these experiments, fluid masses containing bubbles and drops are encountered routinely. This original work provides a clear, thorough review of the motion of bubbles and drops in reduced gravity, particularly motion caused by variations in interfacial tension arising from temperature gradients on their surfaces. The emphasis is on theoretical analysis from first principles; experimental results are discussed and compared with predictions where appropriate. Book Description

Elinor Mackey has always done the right things in the right order -- college, law school, career, marriage -- but now everything's going wrong. After two painful years of trying, Elinor has learned that she can't have children. All the doctors can tell her is that it's probably because of her age. As she turns forty, she withdraws into an interior world of heartbreak. Elinor's loving husband, Ted, a successful podiatrist, has always done the right thing, too. Then he meets the wrong woman at the wrong time, and does the wrong thing. Ted's lover, Gina -- a beautiful and kindhearted nutritionist -- always eats the right thing, but is unlucky in love and always falls for the wrong men. Soon Ted has to fight to make everything right again. Can Elinor and Ted's marriage be saved? The answer is alarmingly fresh and unexpected as New York Times bestselling author Lolly Winston introduces us to characters as memorable as those of Anne Tyler and Nick Hornby, but who are indelibly all her own.

This book was a complete disappointment! The character development was shallow, the story line tiresome, and the conversations were boring. Like the book, the characters had no redeeming qualities! Oh, wait, I just thought of one...the book would make great kindling.

5 out of 5 stars Love this author.......2007-09-25

Very good read. Good character development. Unique story line. I LOVED Winston's first book, Good Grief. I saved it and read it twice. Her second novel is quite good as well.

                          3 out of 5 stars Hmmmm..........2007-09-23

Not the worst book I've read, but definitely not the best. It was a depressing read with no light at the end of the tunnel and no big payoff. The characters were well drawn but nothing really seemed to happen. The pace was SLOW. I'm a big reader and always on the lookout for a good book. If you can pick this book up at a garage sale for 25 cents, like I did, or borrow it from the library it would be okay. Do NOT buy it. I read "Good Grief", by the same author and liked (not loved) it. I would not recommend this book. The storyline was boring, the characters were multi-dimensional and well-drawn, but not strong enough to carry a so-so downer of a tale. I should note that this review is written by a 44-year-old unmarried man. Women will probably respond differently than I did.

                          2 out of 5 stars Definitely a disappointment.......2007-09-18

I loved Good Grief, so I thought this new book would be just as good. But it wasn't. Definitely not as funny, well-written or as packed with the interesting characters as her previous book. These characters seem flat and miserable, almost to the point of ridiculousness. I was really hoping for at least a compromise ending - not syrupy happy or anyone dead... just some kind of middle of the road where they all pursue other things and you hope as a reader they all can make something of their lives. But that didn't happen either. Skip this book.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to stomach.......2007-09-11

While the writing is excellent, and the characters are very captivating, I found the subject matter hard to take. The constant themes of unhappiness, adultery, and chaos made me want a happy ending. I was very disappointed when that was not the case.

                          Book Description

                          Dream boyfriend not included.

When she moved to New York, Ryan Hadley imagined living the big-city-sitcom kind of life with all the trimmings -- great apartment, dream job, and a swept-off-your-feet, how-awesome-is-this-guy love. Of course, her real life is only so-so: not outstanding, nor bad enough to require medication. Ryan spends her days at a dreary data-entry job with wannabe-rocker Will, nights at her favorite dive bar with pals Audrey and Veronica, and her spare time daydreaming about the ideal -- but sadly, fictional -- man: if only Mark Darcy wasn't claimed by Bridget Jones.

                          Some assembly required.

But two promotions and a record deal later, Ryan's three closest friends are suddenly moving on up -- while Ryan seems to be treading water. Then Charlie, her college ex and super hottie, appears out of the blue with a success story of his own and more than a little baggage in tow. In a New York minute, Ryan realizes that one doesn't live off a maxed-out credit card and a year's supply of squashed Ho Ho's without learning a few important life lessons. She's ready to squeeze a five-year-plan for success into just a few crazy months. After all, why be a big-city girl if you're not going to dream big -- and reach for the stars?

                          4 out of 5 stars Cute book.......2006-11-10

this was a cute book for girls in their 20's and beyond. I am late 30's and still enjoyed it. It is about girls making it in the city of NY. One of the girls seems behind in her life in areas such as career, success, love, then most of her friends. She works to better herself. Even though she has to deal with a tempermental ex-boyfriend, she manages to keep her sense of humor. Very cute.

I bought this by mistake-thought I was buying book of same title by Lolly Winston...what a disappointment. These 20-something novels are something else...boo hoo hoo...life isn't perfect, but wait-then suddenly it is! Give me a break...I know it is fiction but don't readers want some real life in their books anymore??
                          Maybe not...that might require thinking...

                          4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 - fast, entertaining read.......2006-04-22

I love the style of the writing team that makes up Libby Street. What a fast, entertaining read. It made me laugh, cry, cringe. I agree with the other reviewer who said it took about 50 pages to get into the book. I put it down several times in the beginning, but was soon sucked in, and stayed up late to finish it. Only thing I couldn't stand was the repeat of the phrase "modern American female." All in all, a good book.

3 out of 5 stars Rough around the edges but entertaining.......2006-01-05

Having enjoyed the story by Libby Street in the anthology "In One Year, Out the Other," I was excited to read this book and see what the author(s) would do with a full novel.

It took a while to get into this book - the beginning does nothing to really draw you in and you have to really force yourself to get past that first hump so you can enjoy the rest. The characters are likeable all right, but they're not the kind that keep you hastily turning pages! A minor irritation was also the fact that the main character keeps making lists of everything. Lists for what happens when she walks down the street in a new outfit, lists for what she wants to do with her life, lists for what human interaction she's had over the course of a day... you get the picture.

The plot is simple: Ryan is sick of her dead-end job and all her friends seem to be making it career-wise. Then her exboyfriend - the one that got away! - comes into town and the sparks begin to fly... only there's someone else in the picture. I must say, the guy in it was depicted very well, very believable. But the romance plotline takes backseat to the story about Ryan's life in general and how she's trying to turn it around.

Overall, I thought this book was better than some chick lit out there and worse than some chick lit out there. I didn't feel entirely satisfied by the quick ending, nor was I completely sucked in by the entire plot. On the other hand, dialogue between the characters was consistently well done and enjoyable. I may pick up the second novel when it comes out in hopes that the writing will only get better.
