Description:
A novel chelating resin functionalized with serine diacetic acid moiety was synthesized by using chitosan as base material, and applied to the collection/concentration of trace elements in environmental water samples, followed by the determination using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES). The synthesized resin, crosslinked chitosan serine diacetic acid (CCTS-SDA), showed good adsorption behavior toward trace amounts of Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni, V, Ga, Sc, In, and Th in a wide pH range. Additionally, rare earth elements also can be retained on the resin at neutral pH region. The adsorbed elements can be easily eluted with 1molL^-^1 of nitric acid, and their recoveries were found to be 90-100%. The CCTS-SDA was packed in a mini-column, which was then installed in a computer-controlled auto-pretreatment system (Auto-Pret System) for on-line trace elements collection and determination with ICP-AES. Experimental parameters which related to the improvement of sensitivity and reproducibility were optimized. The limits of detection (LOD) for 13 elements were found to be in sub-ppb level. The proposed method with CCTS-SDA resin was successfully applied to the determination of trace elements in river water samples. The method was validated by determining a certified reference material of river water, SLRS-4.

Description:
A new functionalized mesoporous silica (MCM-41) using salicylaldehyde was utilized for the separation, preconcentration and determination of uranium in natural water by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Experimental conditions for effective adsorption of trace levels of U(VI) were optimized. The preconcentration factor was 100 (1.0mL of elution for a 100mL sample volume). The analytical curve was linear in the range 2-1000@mgL^-^1 and the detection limit was 0.5ngmL^-^1. The relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) under optimum conditions was 2.5% (n=10). Common coexisting ions did not interfere with the separation and determination of uranium at pH 5. The sorbent exhibited excellent stability and its sorption capacity under optimum conditions has been found to be 10mg of uranium per gram of sorbent. The method was applied for the recovery and determination of uranium in different water samples.

Tied for first place!.......2007-06-23
I'm a fan of Ms. Keyes, make no mistake. Several of her books are my very favorites; I thought "Rachel's Holliday" and "Anybody Out There' were superb. Yet I found "Lucy..." to be a contender for her best work. I loved the storyline. It's a familiar one to many of us, ladies, what it's like to be a co-dependent. And although I would get frustrated with Lucy, I'm sure that's what many people feel towards those of us who always seem to choose that loser. And although this story did have a dark premise, it had many laugh out loud moments, and wasn't gloomy at all to read. The good guy in this book was a sweetie, but I still rank Luke from "Holiday" as my favorite Keyes hero. I would recommend this book to everyone. I much preferred it to "Last Chance Saloon", which I wasn't that fond of; cringe.
Just Hilarious.......2007-03-02
I know that some people haven't liked this book, but I laughed so hard while reading it in bed, I woke up my husband. Being an Irish gal myself, and having to deal with depression and, of course, alcoholism, I thought that it was great to take a light heart - for once- to these serious matters. I recommend this book to anyone who just wants a great read and a long laugh! Those who don't like it, are taking life way to seriously! Make sure you read this one!
frustrating.......2007-02-22
I did not love this book. Marian Keyes usually keeps me pretty entertained, but this book was a struggle. The story starts out as 4 women who work together go to see a psychic. She tells them each something that is going to happen to them, and once by one each seems to happen - by some stretch of the imagination. Lucy Sullivan, who was one of those women, is supposed to get married to someone she might have overlooked in the past.
After seeing her friends' fortunes comes true, she is on the look-out for this man. Turns out she soon meets a man named Gus, who is so bizarre and talks so strangely that you won't be able to wait until he's out of the story again.
The book also comes to explain the importance of Lucy's best friend, Daniel, and his influence on her life. Her father also happens to be an intense alcoholic, but Lucy is in denial and adores her father. Her father being so careless and dependent has led Lucy to be attracted to pathetic, penniless men like Gus. It's a very frustrating and maddening book to read, not to mention long. I would definitely say it's not one of my favorite Keyes books.

Lucy is not your traditional heroine. She does tons of stupid things that annoyed me but her self-deprecating humor is good for some chuckles. Lucy irritated me for much of the story because she keeps picking the WRONG guy....gets back together with the rotten boyfriend, but it all makes sense when you learn about her family's background. The storyline also made me think of the stupid "guy" things I did when I was a teenager or in my twenties. I reread my favorite parts of this book about 10 times. A most enjoyable read!

I think this one is my favorite Marion Keyes book and I have almost read them all now. She is such an entertaining writer and its sad that she gets lumped in with the other "Chic Lit" stuff because I feel her stories are so much more than mere chick lit! She tackles some serious issues as drug and alcohol abuse, family relations and the business world. She doesnt get enough recognition!! I love all her books but this one is my favorite because of Daniel. He's dreamy.... sigh!
