Cybernetical Physics: From Control of Chaos to Quantum Control (Understanding Complex Systems)
Alexander L. Fradkov Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540462759 |
Book Description
The control of complex systems is one of the most important aspects in dealing with systems exhibiting nonlinear behaviour or similar features that defy traditional control techniques. This specific subject is gradually becoming known as cybernetical physics, borrowing methods from both theoretical physics and control engineering. Emphasis of the book is on the examination of fundamental limits on energy transformation by means of control procedures in both conservative and dissipative systems. A survey of application in physics includes the control of synchronisation of coupled oscillators, pendulum chains, reactions in physical chemistry and of quantum systems such as the dissociation of diatomic molecules.
This book has been written having research from various backgrounds in physics, mathematics and engineering in mind and is thus also suitable as introduction to graduate students working on the understanding of a broad range of complex systems in the natural sciences.

Coherent Dynamics of Complex Quantum Systems
Vladimir M. Akulin , and V.M. Akulin Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540210520 |
Book Description
A large number of modern problems in physics, chemistry, and quantum electronics require a consideration of population dynamics in complex multilevel quantum systems. The purpose of this book is to provide a systematic treatment of these questions and to present a number of exactly solvable problems. It considers the different dynamical problems frequently encountered in different areas of physics from the same perspective, based mainly on the fundamental ideas of group theory and on the idea of ensemble average. Also treated are concepts of complete quantum control and correction of decoherence induced errors that are complementary to the idea of ensemble average. Coherent Dynamics of Complex Quantum Systems is aimed at senior-level undergraduate students in the areas of atomic, molecular, and laser physics, physical chemistry, quantum optics and quantum informatics. It should help them put particular problems in these fields into a broader scientific context and thereby take advantage of the well-elaborated technique of the adjacent fields.

Frontiers in Number Theory, Physics, and Geometry I: On Random Matrices, Zeta Functions and Dynamical Systems
Pierre Emile Cartier Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 3540231897 |
Book Description
The relation between mathematics and physics has a long history, in which the role of number theory and of other more abstract parts of mathematics has recently become more prominent.
More than ten years after a first meeting in 1989 between number theorists and physicists at the Centre de Physique des Houches, a second 2-week event focused on the broader interface of number theory, geometry, and physics.
This book is the result of that exciting meeting, and collects, in 2 volumes, extended versions of the lecture courses, followed by shorter texts on special topics, of eminent mathematicians and physicists.
The present volume has three parts: Random matrices, Zeta functions, Dynamical systems.
The companion volume is subtitled: On Conformal Field Theories, Discrete Groups and Renormalization and will be published in 2006 (Springer, 3-540-30307-3).

Algebraic Integrability of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems on Manifolds: Classical and Quantum Aspects (Mathematics and Its Applications)
A.K. Prykarpatsky , and I.V. Mykytiuk Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792350901 |
Book Description
This book is unique in providing a detailed exposition of modern Lie-algebraic theory of integrable nonlinear dynamic systems on manifolds and its applications to mathematical physics, classical mechanics and hydrodynamics. The authors have developed a canonical geometric approach based on differential geometric considerations and spectral theory, which offers solutions to many quantization procedure problems. Much of the material is devoted to treating integrable systems via the gradient-holonomic approach devised by the authors, which can be very effectively applied. Audience: This volume is recommended for graduate-level students, researchers and mathematical physicists whose work involves differential geometry, ordinary differential equations, manifolds and cell complexes, topological groups and Lie groups.

Secret Lives of Second Wives
Catherine Todd Manufacturer: HarperTorch ProductGroup: Book Binding: Mass Market Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0060953470 Release Date: 2004-05-25 |
Book Description
Catherine Todd is back again with another witty tale about life's unexpected surprisesAfter more than a decade alone, fortyish attorney Lynn Bartlett was ready for something more than nights curled up with Jane Austen and a recalcitrant tomcat. So when the right man came along -- kind, clever Jack Hughes -- she said yes to his proposal. How hard could it be? Jack's children were grown, and the Bay Area -- with its insatiable demand for immigrant technological workers -- offered plentiful opportunities for opening a new immigration practice. Lynn had every expectation for a transition that would be if not seamless, at least without unexpected obstacles.
Welcome to the world of the second wife, where nothing turns out quite as expected. After all, Lynn never anticipated that her new husband's first wife would show up uninvited at the fiftieth birthday party she throws him. And there was nothing in the wedding vows about Jack's unemployed son moving in with them or his daughter's implacable resistance to every friendly overture. Nor did she count on finding one of her clients so unsettlingly attractive. Not even the Anne Boleyn Society -- an informal support group for second wives whose motto could be "I never thought it would be so hard" -- had all the answers. And when her partner in the boutique immigration law practice she is building resigns under suspicious circumstances, Lynn finds that her career and her marriage are in jeopardy.
Todd captures Lynn's journey from wryly unmarried to impossibly fettered with empathy and wit. Secret Lives of Second Wives is the story of finding the balance between honoring your commitments and being true to yourself.

Fun time, page-turner, hard to put down!.......2006-08-11
Singing the second wife blues........2003-10-13
Catherine Todd, in her funny and entertaining new book, "Secret Lives of Second Wives," explores the well-worn territory of how excess baggage from a first marriage sometimes drags a second marriage down. Todd's novel is not a rehash of old material, however. It is a refreshingly original story of a woman who is self-confident and comfortable in her own skin. Lynn is not willing to settle for second best either in her professional or her personal life. Her husband, laden with guilt about how he may have shortchanged his first family, incurs financial and psychological burdens that threaten to sabotage his relationship with Lynn.
Todd imbues Lynn's and Jack's story with a light and satirical touch. She takes amusing potshots at the materialistic and shallow lifestyle of certain Californians. The dialogue in "Secret Lives" is sharp and clever and the writing is crisp and fast-paced. Yet, underneath all of the lighthearted banter, there are serious undertones in this novel about the complexity of family relationships and the importance of commitment and compromise in a marriage. Catherine Todd's breezy prose style and her intelligent treatment of the dynamics of second marriages make "Secret Lives of Second Wives" a first-rate and very appealing contemporary novel.

An amusing often-melancholy character study.......2003-07-03
One year after they tie the knot, Lynn throws a fiftieth birthday party for her spouse. Though contented, she is not totally into the gala as she finds a Russian scientist more interesting than her husband. She also detests having his children around as they treat her like a fungus; even worse his son plans to move in with them. His first wife has made a martyred appearance that deserves an Oscar. Only her peers at the Anne Boleyn Society provide any relief for the beleaguered second wife.
THE SECRET LIVES OF SECOND WIVES is an amusing often-melancholy character study. Lynn and Jackson work on (or ignore) family issues that make them seem real. Her clients also add depth to Lynn's character. However, his children behave so blatantly and appallingly nasty towards Lynn, readers will wonder why Jackson fails to divorce the duo. His first wife is subtler in her tactics so that she comes across as a sneaky, nasty, but clever schemer. Catherine Todd provides a solid tale that could have been a great novel if she had created realistic antagonists.
