Book Description
Soil fertility is one of the most important factors regulating yield and productivity in both the agricultural and natural ecosystems of the tropics, and maintaining soil fertility has become a key challenge to sustainable development in this region. This book presents the ecological processes and management practices which affect soil fertility and then looks at ways to integrate this knowledge to develop economically feasible solutions. Based on a symposium held at the University of Zimbabwe in May 1996, the volume is partly the result of ten years of research by the Soil Biology and Fertility Project in Zimbabwe and includes contributions from researchers in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. The book is divided into five sections covering nutrient dynamics in soil, decomposition of crop residues, tree-soil-crop interactions in agroforestry and in ecosystem dynamics, and prospects for the future. Essential reading for agronomists, soil scientists and ecologists studying the tropics, this volume is also an important reference for decision-makers in land use and development in tropical countries.

an alternative approach to SUSY.......2006-10-27
This book provides a refreshingly different approach to SUSY on a more algebraic level in contrast to the more standard SUSY textbooks that are motivated from QFT. It is a pleasure to read and everything is well explained from a mathematical physicists point of view. Knowledge of Lie algebras and Z2-graded Lie algebras might come in helpful.
Unfortunately, there are some errors in the book that one finds after careful calculations (or by comparing with other literature).
For everyone who is interested in SUSY and SUGRA, this definitely is a great alternative to the more standard approaches taken from a QFT point of view.
The best book on supersymmetry.......2000-03-25
I have been studying supersymmetry and supergravity, and this is the best book I found. It is very clear and pedagogical. All the derivations are included. It is a very self-contained and up-to-date book. It is also very complete: it includes treatments of lots of topics. After studying it, the student is able to start research on the field.

Introduction to Symplectic Topology (Oxford Mathematical Monographs)
ASIN: 0821835742 |
Book Description
Supersymmetry has been studied by theoretical physicists since the early 1970s. Nowadays, because of its novelty and significance--in both mathematics and physics--the issues it raises attract the interest of mathematicians.
Written by the well-known mathematician, V. S. Varadarajan, this book presents a cogent and self-contained exposition of the foundations of supersymmetry for the mathematically-minded reader. It begins with a brief introduction to the physical foundations of the theory, in particular, to the classification of relativistic particles and their wave equations, such as those of Dirac and Weyl. It then continues with the development of the theory of supermanifolds, stressing the analogy with the Grothendieck theory of schemes. Here, Varadarajan develops all the super linear algebra needed for the book and establishes the basic theorems: differential and integral calculus in supermanifolds, Frobenius theorem, foundations of the theory of super Lie groups, and so on. A special feature is the in-depth treatment of the theory of spinors in all dimensions and signatures, which is the basis of all supergeometry developments in both physics and mathematics, especially in quantum field theory and supergravity.
The material is suitable for graduate students and mathematicians interested in the mathematical theory of supersymmetry. The book is recommended for independent study.
Titles in this series are copublished with the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University.

Book Description
Just as ordinary symmetries relate various forms of matter to each other, and various basic forces to each other, so the novel concept of supersymmetry relates (Fermi) matter to (Bose) force. It is the aim of this book to provide a brief introductory description of the new physical and mathematical ideas involved in formulating supersymmetric theories. The book starts with a physical motivation of supersymmetry, a presentation of the mathematics of Lie superalgebras, supergroups and superspace. Techniques for constructing manifestly globally supersymmetric field theories are given, using the superfield formalism. To allow for a clear flow of ideas, the basic ideas and techniques are worked out in low space dimensionalities where the formulae do not obscure the concepts. Generalizations to four space-time dimensions are then readily come by. Some quantum aspects are discussed. Possible phenomenological applications are not emphasized. Supergravities, locally supersymmetric theories are then considered in 4 and 11 dimensions, in component formalism. An introduction to supersymmetry will be of interest to postgraduate students and researchers in theoretical and particle physics, especially those working in quantum field theory, quantum gravity, general relativity and supergravity. The book will also be of interest to mathematicians with an interest in theoretical physics.

a mathematical book.......2003-03-22
I gave up reading the book after I finished only 3 chapters as I found myself too stupid and can't appreciate the book, to understand the materials on lie superalgrbras, you must be very familar the materials on classical lie algebras as stated by Humphrys, but for a graduate student not very care about the mathematical details of physical theories before, it is really a too high reqirement. But I have to admit it is a good book, I like the style of Freund's writing, I want to say that it's not so good for a graduate student doesn't have a solid basis on mathematics like me, but it might be better for another one who likes the mathematical aspects in physics. I'm tring to read a book on lie algebras to prepare for a future read of the book, I think it worthyful to spend some time on the preparation for reading this book. In addition, the book really contains many important and interesting phases in supersymmetry though it is a very small book.

Disappointing.......2002-01-27
This book in my opinion is too short and much too sketchy in its presentation. I found Weinberg's book to be incomparably better for those seeking an introduction as well as a deeper treatment of the subject. The detail and careful development of the theory in Weinberg stands in stark contrast to the loose, just-describe-the-facts approach found here. For instance, Weinberg clearly atates and proves the Coleman-Mandula theorem and then goes on to give a rigorous derivation of the most general supersymmetry algebras. All this is glossed over in Freund's book.
a perfect introduction.......2001-03-18
This book is perfect for a graduate student in physic who wishes to explore this wonderful new subject of mathematical physics. It is a self consistent, step by step introduction. The mathematics of supersymmetries are explained from chapter 1 to 9 to give the reader a solid mathematical background for studying supersymmetries (chapter 10 to 19) and supergravities (chapter 20 to 26). Perhaps one of the best introduction to the subject.

Gauge Theories in Particle Physics, 2 Volume Set
ASIN: 0521880238 |
Book Description
Supersymmetry represents the culmination of the search for fundamental symmetries that has dominated particle physics for 50 years. Traditionally, the constituents of matter (fermions) were regarded as different from the particles (bosons) transmitting the forces between them. In supersymmetry, fermions and bosons are unified. Intended for graduate students in particle physics, and researchers in experimental and phenomenological supersymmetry, this is the first textbook to provide a simple introduction to a previously formidably technical field. Its elementary, practical treatment brings readers to the frontier of contemporary research, in particular the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider. Theories are constructed through an intuitive 'trial and error' approach. Basic elements of spinor formalism and superfields are introduced, allowing readers to access more advanced treatments. Emphasis is placed on physical understanding, and on detailed derivations of important steps. Many short exercises are included, making for a valuable and accessible self-study tool.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2002-02-14
A wonderful overview of the subject matter! Prem lays things out in a way which is both exciting and educational. I would recommend this book to any graduate student studying Physics!
A MASTER PIECE IN THE FIELD OF PHYSICS !.......1997-11-21
The author seems to be very knowledgeable in the field of Supersymmetry, Superfields, and Supergravity. It is an excellent introductory book for graduate students that intend to learn and understand in depth Supersymmety, Superfields and Supergravity in our Universe!
Book Description
Calvin Becker is back in a timeless story about the volcanic sexual curiosity of a fourteen-year-old boy born into a fundamentalist family so strict that he has never seen a movie, watched television, or danced (and has to hide his five copies of Mad magazine in the attic). It is 1966, and Ralph and Elsa Becker, Reformed Presbyterian missionaries from Kansas, are stationed in Switzerland, and on a modest ski vacation with their three children: tyrannical eighteen-year-old Janet, angelic Rachael, and our narrator, the irrepressible Calvin, who puzzles over his sisters’ bras, as they hang on a line hidden away “so that I could not get a good look unless I ducked under the sheets ... to the feminine heart of the laundry maze.” But at the Hotel Riffelberg, high above Zermatt, Calvin falls into the hands of a waitress who, while bringing him his breakfast each morning, serially initiates him into ecstasies he can barely comprehend. The resulting family crisis triggers a larger crisis of faith in his fundamentalist father, leading to a climax, which rips Calvin out of his childhood. With echoes of Irving and Roth and its own uniquely human voice, Zermatt is a coming-of-age gem.
Customer Reviews:
Hooray for Calvin Becker!.......2006-08-09
Zermatt is my favorite of the Calvin Becker books, because it ends as Calvin is on the cusp of young adulthood and realizing for the first time that something strange and scary and exciting is going on in his father's mind. Since one assumes this material is semi-autobiographical, one maps onto this revelation all kinds of things about Frank and Francis Schaeffer, and they go a long way toward redeeming that father character in the eyes of the reader who has been resenting him ever since Portofino (the first book in the trilogy.)
These three books are complicated and interesting and unflinching. Their only flaw is the irritating prevalence of fancified dialogue tags (no one in the books ever says or asks anything; they always whisper or shout or reply it.) But it's worth overlooking, because story-wise and character-wise, these books really deliver. I hope Mr. Schaeffer will write another trilogy.
Good story, but where is Jennifer?.......2005-08-16
I have fallen in love with Frank Shaffer's "Calvin Becker" universe. The characters are well developed, and his descriptions make me feel like I've spent lots of time in Portofino and Zermatt (Which I really have!) The stories are well written, and give the reader a feeling like slipping on a soft old sweater and sitting by the fire on a cool, damp winter's evening. However, the relationship between Calvin and his best friend, Jennifer, drives much of the plot in the first two books, and Jennifer is nowhere to be found in Zermatt. I missed her terribly because I want to see what happens to the couple as they grow up. (This is supposed to be a "Coming of Age" story, at least for Calvin.) It's clear that the feelings between the two of them are changing as they get older and closer to adolescence. However, the way that "Zermatt" ends leaves us with clear clues that there is more about the Becker family coming soon. I also got the feeling that Jennifer will be there when the next chapter begins. I certainly hope so!
Honor Your Father and Your Mother.......2005-02-10
I have not read the book but from the reviews it is obvious that this is a diatribe and mock against Franky's own family. This is very sad because my wife and I knew the Schaeffer family, spent time in Switzerland in 1977 and were inspired by their love for the poor in spirit, the spiritually hungry and the destitute souls who came to them from distant lands. We were also encouraged by Dr. Schaeffer's love of wisdom. Consequently, hundreds of young people were exhorted to live a life of dignity, using the gifts that God had given them to honor Him and serve their fellow human beings.
I was inspired by Dr. Schaeffer and the late Dr. Wilton Krogman to conduct original Neanderthal research that had never been done before. I took the first cephalometric x-rays of Neanderthals in the museums of Europe and the Middle East that combined the two disciplines of paleoanthropology and orthodontics. The book "Buried Alive" is the result of that research. My wife used Edith's writings on family life to create a wonderful home for our family with five children.
Finally, the Schaeffers were no "Bible Thumpers", as we would be forced to believe. However, they did acknowledge the absolutes of Scripture, one of which states."Honor your father and mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you." Exodus 20:12 Need I say more?
Page-turner, but what's memoir and what's fiction?.......2004-12-29
As a novel, I found this less satisfying than the previous two books about Calvin because the narrative seemed episodic, rather than an expression of a writer's fully realized vision of time, place, and plot. Simply put, the story jumps from one anecdote to the next: this happened, and this, which made me think about ---, but then this happened...
Such a presentation may well resonate with people able to identify themselves with the author or his experiences. But I could not see what distinguishes this from other coming-of-age memoirs written by Western men, except that Calvin's life seems to have become more and more insular over the course of the trilogy.
I could not identify with the author or his experiences, but it was certainly easy to identify the characters and settings described: n.b., described, not created. To most American evangelicals and fundamentalists, Schaeffer's family of origin is well known for its attempts to define and arguably circumscribe the ideal of Protestant orthodoxy. Caricatures of the family in this book extend even to their habits of dress, which is interesting given the writer's apparent agenda of reclaiming his story from the lore of his family.
Much about the circumstances of the author makes me uncomfortable, but I admit that the novel succeeds in at least two areas. First, it provides literary exegesis of the erotic imagination of an American boy. Second, it virtually assures that no further hagiographic treatment of his family and their mission can take place without somehow addressing issues raised by Schaeffer's books, some of which are mental illness and abuse.
The book surely reads differently for those who do not place Frank Schaeffer in context of his family of origin and of a career developed with family support and connections. But my guess is that this ramble is of greatest interest to those who recognize Edith -- er, ELSA in her trim black suit teaching Bible study in the great room of the chalet. So if you do not know or know of the Schaeffers, the book is a fast, uncomplicated read. If you do know or know of the Schaeffers, you may find yourself wondering whether reading the book makes you party to the sin of detraction. I am thinking about that, myself. A lot.
Frank Schaeffer's best book yet.......2003-11-18
I've read everything America's best writer on all things to do with fatherhood and family has written. Portofino was terrific, Saving Grandma stupendous, and Keeping Faith, A Father-Son Story About Love and the United States Marine Corps touching. But "ZERMATT" is the best yet. You heard it here first: Zermatt will become an American classic. If you realy want to get inside the head of a fifteen year old boy and the inner dynamic of a family driven by religious delusion, this is the book. For anyone who had a powerful mom, a father doing his best to keep up and religion hanging over them all, Zermatt is the book.
