Great for homework.......2005-08-16
The working papers are a great addition to the text because they have charts for you to fill in when doing the exercises at the end of the chapter. It's nice to have the double entry journals layed out for you.
We all have to suffer somehow. .......2004-09-25
Despite how intimidating accounting can be for some students, this book really offers a lot. From the CD to the neat little transparencies in chapter 4, this book does give students a greater insight to accounting. Unfortunately, I feel that the book offers too much to students. Icons are all over the place in the book, examples that go nowhere, and page references for problems that actually don't help at all. You have to sift through the chapters yourself to find the right page.
If you have to buy it, buy it... But get all the add ons, they're great to have.
P.S. When in doubt, go to the website, they have great narrated powerpoint presentations on each chapter!

Saves time, but be careful with the errors........2003-04-09
1) It saves you time by arranging the related sections, without a very expensive pricetag.
2) But be careful about the careless errors.
3) Also, it does not explain the abbreviates in texts or mathmatical functions; the answer texts provided are often unable to explain the whole idea clearly.
Summary: The reader is expected to have reasonable level of understanding and familiarity about the contents. You have to buy / have access to the reading materials to make this book meaningful. It works as a draft for your own study notes, but will not work as a replacement for the assigned reading materials.

Not worth the price.......2004-03-06
For over a hundred dollars I expected a lot more from this book. The book really has two parts. The first is a very brief summary of the concepts on the test. No examples are used in these summaries, so it is not overly useful. The second part of the book is a very short practice exam. Although there are answers for the exam, there are no explanations for the non mathamatical problems. The solutions for the mathamatical problems are extremely short as well. If I paid $30 for this book I wouldn't be overly upset, but for four times that amount I expected a lot more.

Description:
The open savanna woodlands in Ethiopia, distributed over very large areas of the Rift valley in southern and eastern parts of the country, have suffered from deforestation due to excessive tree cutting and overgrazing. Previous reforestation programs attempting to counteract the effects of deforestation have failed mainly due to lack of knowledge on site-species matching. This research was set out to asses the effect of disturbance on water status of both plants and their respective sites, explain differences among species in survival and distribution and determine their relative suitability for restoration of degraded lands. Plant water potentials of five common co-occurring species were measured in the field at midday and predawn in the dry season. The water potential values of the species at different sites of biophysical settings and diurnal differences revealed significant difference among the species. The differences in degradation status in terms of tree density, ground cover and overgrazing did not show a clear pattern in water potential changes among the species and sites. Acacia tortilis, Balanites aegyptiaca and Dichrostachys cinerea, which exhibited low midday (-3.05 to -4.85MPa), predawn (-1.98 to -3MPa) and wide diurnal (1.16-2.25MPa) plant water potential ranges had wider capacities to withstand water changes and, hence, can be considered as suitable candidates for reforestation in drought prone areas. Though Acacia senegal and Acacia seyal with highest midday (-1.55 to -2.68MPa), predawn (-0.83 to -2.09MPa) and narrow diurnal (0.32-1.1MPa) plant water potential ranges could be categorized as drought avoider (sensitive) species, they have a combination of mechanisms to avoid drought and grow in dry areas. Particularly, their better growth performances during moist years could make them suitable candidates in areas of non-limiting water conditions. Both exotic and indigenous species, with similar water potentials to those found in the respective sites, may have a better chance of survival in those sites and in areas that have similar ecological and climatological conditions to the ones the current research covered.

The objective of this controlled experiment was to compare the ability of Hippophae rhamnoides L. (Sea buckthorn) and Caragana intermedia Kuang & H.C. Fu (Intermediate peashrub), both perennial temperate deciduous shrubs, to acclimate to a water deficit by architectural plasticity and growth responses. Their changes in branching pattern parameters, and in dry matter accumulation and allocation, were recorded after 2 years of exposure to four different water supply levels: normal precipitation, slight drought, drought and extreme drought. Their branching patterns showed that H. rhamnoides tended to expand horizontally, with more, shorter, thinner branches and a larger branch angle, whereas C. intermedia tended to grow perpendicularly with fewer, longer, thicker branches and a smaller branch angle. The overall bifurcation ratio and stepwise bifurcation ratio R"1":"2 of H. rhamnoides were comparatively steady; in contrast, those of C. intermedia increased markedly with an increase in water supply. The different adaptation strategies in biomass distribution pattern under different water supply treatments indicated that C. intermedia made a relatively high investment in root growth, especially in deeper roots, and in its changes in bifurcation ratio under water stress. H. rhamnoides grown under ample water supply was distinguished by its fast growth and relatively high investment in branches and leaves. The study revealed the ability of C. intermedia to adapt to a wider range of water stress by architectural plasticity and growth responses.

Cover and survivorship of perennial chenopods, Atriplex vesicaria and Maireana astrotricha, declined markedly during a prolonged dry period at Roxby Downs in arid South Australia. Despite their resilience to browsing in favourable seasons, only 2% of the A. vesicaria shrubs browsed heavily by cattle survived the drought. M. astrotricha exhibited greater drought survivorship, although the post-drought cover retention in browsed shrubs was only half that of unbrowsed controls. Survivorship was highest for unbrowsed chenopods growing in moisture-enhanced run-on or dune-base environments. Maintenance of these patchy areas with reduced water-stress is hence important for the persistence of browsed chenopod shrublands. Light browsing by either European Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) or Greater Stick-nest Rats (Leporillus conditor) had no measurable impact upon chenopod survivorship.

I found this book a true waste of time. Most of the information was outdated and many of the prophecies have past their deadline for fruition. Many Californians will find it disappointing to know that their great state should have fallen in the ocean by now (97-98). Can't wait to here the explanation for the changing deadline!

Overlooked gem.......2005-10-27
I have no idea why there aren't more reviews for this book. Petrakis is a very talented writer and this is a very engaging read. It reminds me a little bit of Gail Godwin's novels (haven't read those? they're excellent) but from a male perspective. Besides the entertainment value of the plot, I learned about interesting Greek/American values in Chicago. Good book.
