Book Description
The head of a celebrity public relations firm offers expert advice on the art of PR and branding
In A Branded World, renowned celebrity publicist and bestselling author Michael Levine explores the fascinating and complex world of branding. He explores the many facets of PR in the branding process, including packaging, damage control, and e-branding. By actually creating a fictional product and using it as a branding template throughout the book, this definitive work offers extraordinary advice for PR executives and marketing managers on how to build their brands and use the appropriate media to effectively promote those brands. With examples of successful and unsuccessful branding campaigns and an exploration of the idea of personalities as product, this is the definitive guide to branding.
Michael Levine (Los Angeles, CA) has represented hundreds of major-name celebrities as head of a prominent public relations firm with offices in Los Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C., and London. His client list includes Janet Jackson, Fleetwood Mac, and Reebok, among others. His essays have appeared in USA Today, the National Review, the Los Angeles Times, and The New York Times.

Lessons in Public Relations, Marketing, and Advertising.......2007-05-13
I found this book in looking for sources for my public relations case study on Apple Computer (now just Apple, Inc.). This book only has a few mentions of Apple, but it also cites so many other examples from Nike, Charlton Heston, Madonna, and the Got Milk? campaign, and many others. The author also outlines different steps in a fictional company to illustrate the points that he makes in the book. I didn't use the book very much for my Apple case study, but I did read the entire book afterward and found it to be a very valuable resource for myself, since public relations is my area of study. This book is applicable to anyone who studies public relations, marketing, or advertising, as well as people who have a business or anyone who wants to know more about the "science" behind the actions that many companies take to try to get your attention in a favorable way.
Good But Maybe Not for What You Think .......2006-12-24
I have been a publicist for over a dozen years and have read many books on the subject, and been impressed with few. One of my gripes has always been the lack of "real world" accounts from various authors. I have a respect for Michael because he is a fellow colleague with real world experience and he offers up that information here in laymens terms.
You cant expect to read a book about branding or public relations and have the author offer up all their secrets unless him/her no longer practice in the field and could care less about the information they offer. Frankly I would offer commen sense information that would help the average person but certaintly not all as I am a firm believer that you have to protect your bread and butter.
If your new to branding and public relations principles this book will be a great supplement to any public relations textbook. The reader might come away with some helpful hints.
This book will probably not work for small business folks who do not have the budget many of the companies and celebrities mentioned in this book have at their disposal and contrary to popular belief good PR from a professional or firm cost money. Not as much as advertising, but PR is not cheap and why should it be. Kudos to Michael for sharing info about our business which can only help the business.
Simple but informative .......2005-08-07
The book explains why do we need a brand, what can it do and how to maintain it. If you are looking for deep branding tactics then you are in the wrong place.
Not What I Was Hoping For.......2004-07-15
The majority of this book reads more like speculation by the author rather than solid fact. The impression this gives the reader is the the author has not dealt with many big brand names on a publicity level. The problem with this is that dealing with smaller entities is quite a far cry from dealing with a major brand such as Nike or Toyota.
I kept reading hoping for some interesting inside scoops into the world of big name brands, but was let down. If you are new to the world of branding you might gain a few nuggets of information from this, but I found it all to be common sense.
Ultimately Disappointing.......2004-05-05
This book is not without its good points, particularly the author's ability to address the audience equally regardless of PR background. However, the downsides cannot be ignored. The central theme of the book is credibility and how PR is the surest route to building it. As other reviewers have pointed out, there are a number of arguments based on correlation, rather than cause-effect. Even more irritating are the armchair assessments of what other companies/countries should have done when building their campaigns with no real supporting evidence that the recommended strategies would have been effective. In addition, even though the author asserts that PR is the best way to build a brand, it doesn't appear that the professional PR organizations (which are few and far between) even mention this fact in their charters. So, what it really comes down to is a very specific view of PR, using a very specific PR strategy which, as luck would have it, can't be found at a local PR firm.

Description:
This paper examines price and trading volume responses in the US equity market to the preliminary earnings announcements (PEAs) in the UK of UK firms listed on US exchanges (e.g., NYSE and AMEX). The inquiry focuses on whether the return forecast error (absolute and squared values) and volume residual (standardized and unstandardized) for each day were significantly different from the average on the day of the earnings announcements (PEA). The most significantly unexpected return occurred the day prior to the Financial Times (FT) announcement. The results suggest prompt volume and price responses to the UK PEAs in the US security market. Excess trading volume occurred the day prior to and the day of the FT release price response occurred on the day subsequent to the PEAs. This may suggests that investors possess differential prior beliefs or likelihood functions in evaluating public disclosure. Consistent with Frost and Pownall [Frost, C., & Pownall, G. (1996), Interdependencies in the global markets for capital and information: The case of Smithkline Beecham plc. Accounting Horizons, 1, 38-57], US investors seem not to be confused by US/UK generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) differences, and in fact use information about UK GAAP earnings in their valuations and trading decisions. This implies that traders correctly use UK accounting output to the determination of values in setting security prices and arriving at trading decisions. Broadly, these findings support the assumption that disclosures by UK-listed firms in their domestic market influence share liquidity and trading in the US market.

This book will change your life.......2007-06-13
United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Principles -- how, with a riveting title like that, is this book not at the top of best-seller lists all over the world? Consider just one thing: spelling! They amortise, the capitalise, they realise and such... what a rich, diverse presentation this is. No library is complete without this volume; no life is complete without its contents; no human being can possibly be fulfilled without knowing UK GAAP.

Book Description
Environmental stresses represent the most limiting factors for agricultural productivity worldwide. These stresses impact not only current crop species, they are also significant barriers to the introduction of crop plants into areas that are not currently being used for agriculture. Stresses associated with temperature, salinity and drought, singly or in combination, are likely to enhance the severity of problems to which plants will be exposed in the coming decades.
The present book brings together contributions from many laboratories around the world to discuss and compare our current knowledge of the role stress genes play in plant stress tolerance. In addition, strategies are discussed to introduce these genes and the processes that they encode into economically important crops, and the effect this will have on plant productivity.

Book Description
The Illustrated Chinese-English Guide for Biomedical Scientists is intended to build confidence in the use of English scientific language. The book lists terms that are in common use in science laboratories, translated into both simplified and complex Chinese. It also contains illustrations of equipment, labeled in both languages.
Customer Reviews:
A very useful book.......2005-10-19
As a chinese biomedical scientist, when I started my working in an American lab, I clearly remembered how hard it has been to let others understand me just because I didn't know the English names of some lab stuffs. I found this book is just specially designed for solving this problem. And its illustrations also vividly show you a real American lab. I believe, with this book at hand, your life in American lab will become more easier due to more effective communication. So, I strongly recommend it to those chinese who are working in or wish to join an American lab.
It is very helpful.
extremelu helpful .......2005-10-14
I found this book is extremely helpful. As personel exchanges in sciences between China and US are becoming increasinly active, this book provides a bible-like tool for those people involved in science. I strongly encourage biomedical scientists from both countris who are going to vist US or China should buy this book.
Of course, this book would be more helpful if simple conversations were added. i hope that we can see those conversations in the future.
Do not waste your money!!!.......2004-09-22
I bought this book, and I believe the title of this book is misleading. No biomedical scientist needs the book like this.
Do you believe that "time""timer""tissue""try" were "comprehensive terminology"?

Book Description
Princess Jacqueline de Soignee is used to having her life handed to her on a silver platter. But being a princess in the 21st century isn't easy, and there are certain rules that she must adhere to, such as "never wear your tiara before five in the afternoon: to do so is gauche." The Princess-In-Training Manual is a flip, irreverent first-person look at what it takes to be a princess in the modern world.
Divas Don't Fake It is a first-person fiction narrative guiding readers through the levels of "divadom," and takes a revealing look at what it takes to be a diva -- you don't need anything but lipstick and eyeliner . . . and a suitcase full of self-confidence and attitude. These semi-tongue-in-cheek vignettes will resonate with any young woman who loves -- or has always dreamed of -- being the center of attention.
Customer Reviews:
2.5 stars - Poor Divas had to be stuck with The PITs.......2006-12-02
The Princess-in-Training Manual
Frankly, I don't know why I finished the Princess-in-Training Manual. Not that it was absolutely the most horrible thing I've ever read, but it was very bland with a one-dimensional character. At times, the tone just seemed condescending, which was really weird because you don't need one iota of brain power to read this vapid story. When I picked this up I wanted something light, but this was ridiculous. I don't even get the end either, exactly why does she like Brandon and why does he like her? They don't even know each other. Maybe it's supposed to be a fairy tale ending? Oh well, it was really short, so I didn't waste too much time. I really don't think I'll ever pick up anything by Lisa Drucker if this is what I have to look forward to.
Oh, and I did skip the whole glossary at the back. I mean, who needs to read 8 pages of terms most of us know already?
1/5
Divas Don't Fake It
After reading the other story in this 2 for 1, and never really liking the whole diva thing, I wasn't expecting too much. Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised. The story took a slightly deeper look into the diva psyche with great results. Yes, there were some things you associate with divas, but a lot of it is just about being yourself. I really liked how the author portrayed a diva and I thought Xandra was actually pretty cool; I almost want to be one myself (but not quite). Although, I now realize I do possess some diva traits. :) Some moments were funny, some were thoughtful, and some were just plain realistic. One of my favorite parts was the whole Valentine thing, which was great. And I couldn't help but smile at the end; it was really sweet. As you can see I thought this story was great and I'll definitely be on the lookout for more books by Erica Orloff.
4/5 stars
Hilarious.......2005-05-21
Divas Don't Fake It and Princess in Training were both good and very entertaining. A lot of people can not relate to Jacqueline's character and I admit Xandra's character was more real because Jacqueline was a rich bratt, but each book was unique and a lot of fun to read.
Light-lite-chick-lit.......2005-01-08
Chick-lit is (sometimes deservingly) known for being "lite" on story and characterization. And the flip-book "The Princess-in-Training Manual/Divas Don't Fake It" lives up to that. "Divas" is a passable piece of chick-lit, but "Manual" is an excruciatingly self-satisfied piece of garbage.
Jacqueline de Soignee is the perfect princess -- self-confident, beautiful, wealthy, and universally adored. Oh yes, and of course she's also down-to-earth. Despite being royalty, she's just like every other girl. (Note to every-other-girls of the world: if you're not retching now, you should be). She offers tips on how to be a non-royal princess, as she navigates a web of fashion, displeased kings, sexy Frenchmen and slimy tabloid reporters.
In contrast, Xandra Kingston is a diva with a capital D. She's passionate, confident, can curse out a man, and is the center of attention wherever she goes. Like Jacqueline, she offers quite a few tips on becoming a true diva, while navigating the problems of love, work and personal life. And occasionally a well-aimed thrown plate.
There have always been self-assured women around, and this flip-book seems to be a celebration of such women. Unfortunately, Orloff seems unaware that it's no fun to read a personal fantasy that name-drops designers fast and furiously. There's nothing wrong with fantasizing about being a Paris-Hiltonesque princess, but keep it to yourself rather than inflicting a poorly-written story on the world.
The two heroines could not be more different -- Xandra comes across as humorous and self-assured, without the neuroses that most chick-lit protagonists have. The scene where she roars at a male opponent is just wonderful. Jacqueline, on the other hand, just seems like a fantasy alter ego -- she's rich, beautiful, adored, and has the IQ of a salted peanut.
The princess tips are vapid and pointless. The diva tips, on the other hand, are pretty solid, although they echo of women's self-help columns. And the storylines follow suit. Xandra's tale is fun and unself-conscious, while Jacqueline's starts with a director burbling that her presence -- a cameo where she steps out of a car -- will make his film a masterpiece. Gag.
This two-pack is rancid on one side, but pretty amusing on the other. Unless you dream of being a shopping-obsessed princess, avoid "The Princess-in-Training Manual," and learn how to not fake it as a diva.
5 stars to the Diva, 1 star to the Princess.......2004-07-28
I loved reading "Divas don't fake it". It was really cute. Too bad the publishers had to tell the author her book would be pushed over by a stupid fairy tale. While Xandra was a sassy, "gimme the r-e-s-p-e-c-t", fun, outgoing, outspoken diva who wouldn't nudge, she nudged for once, and let Jacqueline the dumb, amsuing clown "princess" take the other half of what could have been more of Xandra's amusing and funny tale.
Spoonful of French Sugar helps Existentialist Sugar Go Down.......2004-04-18
Jean Paul Sartre taught us how to present deep ideas in popular formats, like novels & plays. Contemporary existentialist DeSoignee (AKA Drucker) continues this tradition, presenting the Princess as a role we can play, whether born royal or not, determining our essense by the choices we make.
