Book Description
The creation of the European Central Bank and the Euro have brought new challenges to EU integration and economic policy. This book looks into issues of monetary and factor market policies. The analysis also presents new theoretical and empirical research on the - transitory - decline of the Euro. Issues of exchange rate policy and international economic relations also are addressed.
Book Description
The single most important topic in finance today is the art and science of credit risk management. Growing dissatisfaction with traditional credit risk measurement methods has combined with regulations imposed by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in 1993 to send numerous financial institutions in search of alternative "internal model" approaches to measuring the credit risk of a loan or portfolio of loans. This has led to a raging debate over whether internal models can replace regulatory models, and which areas of credit risk measurement and management are most amenable to internal models. Much of this highly technical debate, however, has been inaccessible to the interested practitioner, student, economist, or regulator-until now.
In Credit Risk Measurement: New Approaches to Value at Risk and Other Paradigms, Anthony Saunders invites a wider audience into the debate. Simplifying many of the technical details and analytics surrounding internal models, he concentrates on their underlying economics and economic intuition. Professor Saunders examines the approaches of these new models to the evaluation of individual borrower credit risk, portfolio credit risk, and derivative contracts. The alternative models explored include:
* Loans as options and the KMV model
* The VAR approach: J. P. Morgan's CreditMetrics and other models
* The macro simulation approach: the McKinsey and other models
* The risk-neutral valuation approach: KPMG's Loan Analysis System (LAS) and other models
* The insurance approach: mortality models and CSFP credit risk plus model
* Back testing and stress testing credit risk models
* RAROC models
With its comprehensive coverage, summary, and comparison of new internal model approaches along with clear explanations of often complex material, Credit Risk Measurement is an indispensable resource for bankers, academics and students, economists, and regulators.

Don't waste your time.......2002-12-08
Working in the banking industry I was turned on to this book by a colleague and what a colossal waste of time reading this was. The vast majority of this book's models are outdated and if Mr. Saunders was trying to write a historical piece he has accomplished that in spades. Nothing in this book is relevant and it is obvious the esteemed Mr. Saunders lent his name to a very poor book that he probably should have glanced through if not read. Linda Allen should probably get some real world experience because she is wasting people's time with her research.
Good intro, but not enough details.......2000-06-21
I have a copy of this book. It covers popular credit risk models and things like RAROC, etc. These concepts have been discussed extensively in the industry but I assume this is the first in the book form. The book does a good job in presenting basic ideas. However, if you are looking for technical details, you best bets are still the original technical documentations (CreditMetrics, CreditRisk+, KMV, etc). Nevertheless this book is a useful survey of the current stable of models. Besides, it is not very expensive.

Book Description
This book addresses the macroeconomic implications of a country's transition to a monetary union. By using a dynamic multi-country simulation model, it is possible to pinpoint a monetary union, and repercussions produced by fiscal retrenchment policies. Interest and exchange rate effects could only be captured once a new approach including innovations in the solution methodology had been developed. Not only can we draw lessons for newly joining members to the EMU or to any other monetary union, but the analysis also implicitly offers a new explanation for the weak Euro in the first half of 1999.

Book Description
This report analyzes recent innovations brought to the health sector in Papua New Guinea by the Health Sector Development Program. Focusing on health service delivery, this program presented a fundamentally new approach to assistance in the health sector. Prepared and implemented in the context of the major Asian fiscal crisis in the mid-1990s, the Health Sector Development Program proved successful despite difficult circumstances. This work highlights lessons learned from that program, particularly the advantages of transparency and government reinforcement in low-income countries.

Description:
Due to their high ecological and patrimonial value Festuca eskia and Nardus stricta meadows and Rhododendron ferrugineum heathlands need to be locally preserved in the Pyrenees. This could pose dilemmas to conservation managers if heathlands invade and replace the meadows. However, studies showing that the heathlands do actually invade meadows are lacking in the Pyrenees and the invasion hypothesis therefore remains to be proved. So, vegetation pattern changes in a particularly vulnerable site from the central Pyrenees was investigated by two means: (i) interpretation of stereo pairs of aerial photographs and (ii) analysis of the demography of Rhododendron populations in ten 150 m^2 experimental plots. The main results from photo interpretation indicated that, during the period between 1954 and 1995, 15% of a 17 ha meadow area shifted to heathland. This corresponded with a 592 m^2 year^-^1 colonization rate and to an overall front progression of heathland over meadows of 3-60 m. Demographic data showed that meadow colonization by heathland passed through successive phases but appeared to be a rather slow process that can take as long as 120-320 years. During the process the cover rate over the 150 m^2 plots varied between 1 and 0.4 m^2 year^-^1. Heathland extension does not seem to have been favored by the decrease in grazing pressure. Despite this, the progression of heathlands over meadows seems endangering the meadows. Finally we propose practices locally to limit the progression of Rhododendron.

Description:
Biological soil crusts are an essential part of desert ecosystems throughout the world, as they are important in soil stabilization and soil fertility. Despite their importance, there have been few efforts to examine the population dynamics of the dominant species comprising these crusts or the effect of exotic plant invasions on these dynamics. In this study, we followed changes in lichen and moss cover for 8 years in plots dominated by native grasses or invaded by the exotic annual grass Bromus tectorum and across sites representing a range of land use histories. Our data showed that cover of both lichens and mosses can increase dramatically over short time periods, often going from just above 0% cover to as high as 9% cover in only 6 months. Cover of the nitrogen-fixing lichen Collema declined throughout the study, going from 19% in 1996 to as low as 2% in 2003, likely in response to an increase in monthly maximum temperatures during the study period. Changes in chlorolichen cover (lichens with green algal phycobionts), on the other hand, appeared related to precipitation patterns. Past grazing may be responsible for declines in species richness for both mosses and lichens and decline in cover for lichens. A recent Bromus invasion did not affect species richness in never-grazed plots, but a 50-year-old invasion appeared to be related to lower species richness in the previously intermittently grazed plots. Bromus invasion was related to lower cover of Aspicilia, Collema, Placidium, yellow lichens combined (Caloplaca tominii, Candelariella terigena, Fulgensia bracteata, and Fulgensia desertorum), total lichens, and total mosses in some plots in some years. Extended drought was likely responsible for a large decline of all species in 2003. Loss of lichen and moss cover is expected to affect many aspects of this ecosystem. Of special concern is the loss of Collema, as it is the dominant source of nitrogen for this region.

Description:
Acer platanoides L. (Norway maple) is an invasive exotic tree species in the eastern and central United States that poses a serious threat to native forests. In order to improve our understanding of how this species invades native forests, we conducted a retrospective analysis of the stand dynamics of an established population of A. platanoides in a natural area on a temperate forested island in Lake Huron, Michigan, USA. Tree ring analysis was used to reconstruct the canopy recruitment of contemporary A. platanoides overstory trees, and a simple gap capture method was used to investigate gap capture rates for A. platanoides and native species. Given the extreme shade-tolerance of A. platanoides, surprisingly few of the contemporary A. platanoides overstory trees in the forest showed evidence of past suppression suggesting that most established under relatively open canopy conditions and/or in canopy gaps. Height growth comparisons with native species suggest that A. platanoides should be able to capture canopy gaps at least a decade before most common tree species on the island. A. platanoides displayed rapid juvenile growth rates that declined significantly (P
<0.001) with age once trees reached the overstory. These results suggest that A. platanoides ability to form pure stands and dominate native forests is closely linked to its ability to successfully out compete and competitively exclude native shade-tolerant species. While our results suggest that initial establishment of A. platanoides may follow disturbance, once established, populations appear to be self-sustaining. Consequently, monitoring and control efforts in edge and recently disturbed environments may help prevent the spread of this species into intact forest communities; however, chance long distance dispersals into the forest matrix may be more problematic since rare individuals may go unnoticed until they have established a new population.

Book Description
This research monograph offers an introduction to advanced quantum field theoretical techniques for many-particle systems beyond perturbation theory. Several schemes for resummation of the Feynman diagrams are described. The resulting approximations are especially well suited for strongly correlated fermion and boson systems.
Also considered is the crossover from BCS superconductivity to Bose--Einstein condensation in fermion systems with strong attractive interaction. In particular, a field theoretic formulation of "bosonization" is presented; it is published here for the first time. This method is applied to the fractional quantum Hall effect, to the Coulomb plasma, and to several exactly solvable models.
