Book Description
Praise for Accounts Receivable Management Best Practices
"An excellent reference tool on how to manage the accounts receivable process for any company. The use of real-life examples makes the concepts easy to understand. I recommend the book to anyone who wants to improve cash flow and reduce bad debt loss."
—Michael E. Beaulieu, Senior Vice President, Finance Cardinal Health
"Rather than simply explaining how to get the greatest return from an investment in accounts receivable, John G. Salek reveals how companies shoot themselves in the foot when management sets policies and procedures without consideration of the impact on cash flow. Accounts Receivable Management Best Practices isn't just for credit and collection professionals who often spend more time cleaning up process errors and other corporate 'garbage,' instead of managing risk. It should be required reading for C-level executives, the sales staff, operations managers, and anybody else whose job impacts the order-to-cash cycle."
—David Schmidt, Principal, A2 Resources Coauthor of Power Collecting: Automation for Effective Asset Management
"Enhancing a company's competitive profile is all about giving enough customers the right product, at the right price, at the right time. This author's real-world approach to accomplishing this goal through the prism of receivables management makes this book a must-read for those companies looking to make their mark as an organization that cares about its customers as well as their own need to produce financial results."
—Bruce C. Lynn, Managing Director The Financial Executives Consulting Group, LLC
"I have worked with John Salek since 1992, both as his client and as a project manager working with his organization. His knowledge of receivables management . . . the technology, the processes, and the formula for success . . . are unsurpassed in the field."
—Stephen L. Watts, Manager, Global Receivables (retired) General Electric Medical Systems
"Mr. Salek has written a masterpiece on the intricacies and management of the accounts receivable portfolio. I would recommend this book to CFOs, controllers, treasurers, credit managers, and small business owners."
—Steve Kozack, Credit Manager Lennox Hearth Products
"Written by an author who has been in the trenches and cites actual examples. This is not written in theory, but from practice."
—Milt Dardis, Collection Consultant Dardis & Associates

Very Broad ideas with nothing said!!!.......2006-06-27
I hoped to find something useful in this book but the only good idea in this book is `how to separate the debtors in portfolio'. Everything else is NOTHING. Especially if you use an ERP solution you don't have to bother with what is said in this book.
I don't need from someone to tell me what is in an invoice.
I ask the writer of this book WHAT ABOUT RECEIVABLES MANAGEMENT!
WHAT ARE THE KEY INDICATORS THAT WHOULD HELP SOMEONE....
THIS BOOK DEOWSN"T WORTH PAYING FOR.
Great Book !.......2006-03-01
It's one of the best book written about the receivable management. I strongly reccomend this book if you want to build your collections department up.
A must read for any A/R clerk, A/R manager, or controller/CFO.......2006-02-21
This is a very well written book. However, it is not intended for someone who has never been in accounts receivable. There is an assumption that the reader has heard of Sarbanes-Oxley and other accounts receivable terminology. The book provides numerous case studies which are excellent ways the author drove home and supported his points.
As someone who has been in accounts receivable but has never been an A/R manager, I feel very comfortable and confident in interviewing for an A/R manager position now. I was even able to ad a few points to my resume.
The author provides numerous suggestions on how to improve the inflow of cash you, yourself can implement immediately.
I read the entire book in one weekend; 192 pages with many additional case studies in the back as well as throughout the chapters.
You will not be disappointed in this book!

Book Description

Description:
A 33.65-m-long IMAGES (MD982195) core with very high sedimentation rate (ca. 80 cm/kyr), retrieved from the northern part of the East China Sea, was analyzed at 10-cm intervals (about 125 years) for oxygen-carbon isotope of Globigerinoides ruber (sensu stricto), sea surface temperature (SST) from alkenones (U"3"7'^K), and principal component analysis of planktonic foraminiferal assemblage. The general pattern of the @d^1^8O curve, resembling the alkenone SST curve, is similar to the standard open ocean oxygen isotope curve. It reveals many light @d^1^8O peaks apparently corresponding to Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) cycles as observed in Greenland ice cores for the last 42 ka. The alkenone SST at the core top is 24 ^oC, which is close to the modern annual mean SST around the core site. On the other hand, SST during the last glacial maximum (LGM) was about 5 ^oC lower than that in the present day. Alkenone-derived SST does not correlate with the light negative @d^1^8O peaks corresponding to the D-O cycles. The oxygen isotope ratios for the surface waters, based on oxygen isotopes of G. ruber and alkenone SSTs, indicate approximately 1.0%% increase on average during the LGM and many light peaks at the warm D-O events. This suggests that fresh water was supplied to the core site during these events. The meandering of the westerlies during the cold and warm D-O cycles would have caused an atmospheric tele-connection between East Asia and Greenland. The core was divided into four periods based on Q-mode factor analysis of the planktonic foraminiferal assemblage, i.e. (1) a strong upwelling period from 42 to 24 ka, indicated by abundant occurrence of Globigerina bulloides, (2) a cold and low salinity water mass period from 24 to 14 ka, suggested by increase of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma, Neogloboquadrina incompta, and Globigerina quinqueloba, (3) a transitional period from cold to warm water masses from 14 to 8 ka, as indicated by the increase of warm water species such as Pulleniatina obliquiloculata and Globigerinoides ruber, and (4) the present-day warm Kuroshio Current condition after 8 ka. The Kuroshio Current flowed into the ECS since the last 42 ka and weakened during the last glacial maximum (LGM) due to the expansion of the coastal water in the northern part of the ECS.

Frozen Earth: The Once and Future Story of Ice Ages
ASIN: 3540437797 |
Book Description
It is not possible to understand the present or future climate unless scientists can account for the enormous and rapid cycles of glaciation that have taken place over the last million years, and which are expected to continue into the future. A great deal has happened in the theory of the ice ages over the last decade, and it is now widley accepted that ice ages are driven by changes in the Earth's orbit. The study of ice ages is very inter-disciplinary, covering geology, physics, glaciology, oceanography, atmospheric science, planetary orbit calculations astrophysics and statistics.

Global Warming, or Ice Age Ahead?.......2006-03-11
Unfortunately this book is very expensive, which will limit its circulation. It is essentially a textbook for graduate students. and contains many graphs and significant mathematical equations. Very fortunately, the first chapter, "Brief Introductions to ... ", is available on the author's website. It contains facts about the past climate on the earth which are essential in order to put the proper perspective on the current global warming controversy.
As an example, how many articles on global warming have you read that point out that in the past 2500 years, it has been warmer than it is today -- not once, but six times! Our present warming is actually a rebound from the Little Ice Age that gripped the earth starting in 1200 and lasting to 1900. Today we still have not reached the warm temperatures during the days when the Greeks and Romans flourished. (See Fig. 1.2 of Chapter 1 in this book)
Even more jolting is the graph (Fig. 1.3) that shows the length of the current warm period the earth is experiencing -- called an interglacial. We have been warm for 10,000 years. But if you go back another 2000 years, the temperature was 10 to 15 F degrees colder than it is today. To find a period comparable to the present day, you must go back 100,000 years. Or, 200,000 years, or 300,000 years, or 400,000 years, or half a million years! And all but one (500,000 years ago) of these warm periods were significantly shorter than the 10,000 years of warmth the earth is currently experiencing.
Muller's main goal is to try to establish whether astronomical causes are the basis for the variation in the earth's temperature, and specifically, what features of the earth's orbit through space are involved. Most pronounced in the past million years is the 100,000 year cycle described above, which in the past has been attributed to "insolation" -- the varying amount of heat the earth receives due to eccentricies in its orbit around the sun.
The major part of the book is devoted to spectral analysis of temperature data over the ages. It is very technical, as you would expect of a graduate text. Chapter 4 is on "Climate Proxies" like oxygen isotopes, Deuterium, Carbon-13, and sea floor records. "Mechanisms, Models and Theories" to describe the variation of the Earth's temperature are discussed in Chapter 6. In the crucial Chapter 8, problems with our present understanding are reviewed, especially in regard to the specific reason for the 100,000 year cycle, Muller presents a plausible alternate explanation to the usual insolation explanation. That the cycle is astronomically driven, there is no doubt. But as Muller points out, the details are not correctly explained simply by insolation.
This book definitely brings up more questions than answers. This is in contrast to much of the current "climate change" literature, which reminds me of the old saying: "You can find plenty of people who know all the answers. It's the questions that confuse them." This book addresses the basic questions of climate change honestly, perceptively, and diligently. It is from work such as this that true progress will be made in the field of climate change and -- hopefully, before the next Ice Age comes (any century now!) -- control.

Book Description
This book argues that physics is destined to enter a new era marked by an enlarged conception of physical knowledge. This is not a matter of future discoveries, but has to do with how scientific thought responds over time to what is known today. In the new era a genuinely explanatory dimension is restored to physical science which in the current era of thought is quietly abandoned as archaic.
The current view is that for a certain class of phenomena, physical explanations in the sense of descriptions of underlying causal processes are no longer possible. It is assumed that the general demise of classical materialistic causal models (such as the theory of ether as an all-pervading material medium of light propagation) consigns this kind of theorizing to history. This book fully accepts the breakdown of classical causal models, but not the inference that causal explanation itself is outmoded. Instead, it claims that the demise of classical assumptions opens the door on a prospect of thorough causal-physical intelligibility such as was never foreseeable within the classical worldview.
Written with the inquisitive and critically- minded layperson in mind, the book describes findings across the major facets of contemporary physics as all pointing to the same conclusion about the nature of physical reality.

Book Description
What does it mean to be a Nigger? Is it just a word created to distinguish black from white? What is the real meaning of Colored? Again, is it just another word that was created to separate sections and restrooms? Nigger, Negro, Colored, Black, African-American. These words all have the same meaning but in today's society they have all come to mean very different things.
This fictional diary follows the journey of Racey Thomas, an African-American woman, as she tackles issues and perceptions of black Americans in a predominantly white workplace. The story examines the true meaning and consequences behind the struggle of fighting "Nigger-type" perceptions and finally advancing to an African-American status. Racey's journey is filled with real situations, truthful thoughts, honest reactions, and hilarious moments that all African-Americans have experienced in the workplace.
Customer Reviews:
Look a Little Deeper.......2005-04-09
I read this book and I knew it would be contraversial. I read a few of the other reviews and some did not seem to go as deep as the author intended. The author is not a hero trying to be white. She is a hero striving not to be judged by the stereotypes that have grouped African Americans for centuries.
She makes comments to other characters in the book, such as I don't listen to rap music because not all African American people listen to rap music, and she refuses to be characterized by what society has deemed normal for her people. Not all African Americans are ghetto fabulous, nor are all of them trying to be down for some non-existent cause.
Racey is a courages African American woman who dares to challenge her superiors in the workplace. She dares to question their motives and ask them questions (without actually asking the questions) who are you to tell me how to speak or ask.
When she is faced with counterparts in the work place, she realizes they are courageous enough to be themselves and act like no one else in the workplace. This is very uncomfortable for her. She wants to know how could you let them see us this way. They already think all of us steal (my own conclusions). But in the end, she realizes that it is ok to be who she is and not worry about what anyne else thinks and feels about it anyway.
This was a very good book and a very good read. Go just a little deeper and get the symbolism and irony in the book.
Love this book!.......2005-04-09
This book will make you laugh, cry and more importantly, think about what African-Americans go through daily in their work environments. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a thoughtful approach at dealing with the racial divide in the workplace.
Nothing Learned.......2005-04-08
I already knew the book was going to be controversial from the title, but I embrace controversy. I like to learn about different perspectives and being a black woman in a fairly-white working environment, I was intrigued by the plot. Unfortunately, that's where it ends. The structure and the dialogue of the story was well-written and sadly, very realistic. I've dealt with quite a few situations like this in college instead of work though.
But the main character in this story is still stuck in the same clueless arrogance that she started with. The same way she says white co-workers judge her style of music, dress, dance, and vocabulary, she judges her black subordinates. She pointed out more than a few times that she wears Banana Republic and seems to think Phat Farm and Fubu are ridiculous (along with hip-hop). Black people supporting black businesses is one of the few healthy ways we survive as a unit and I didn't appreciate her looking down on this group of people. The main character had the audacity to actually embrace the n-word at the end of the book, regardless of how offended she was by race jokes.
I completely didn't understand why she was so offended by the "ask-axe" clarification. If she embraced Ebonics so much, then why be embarassed of embracing other black stereotypes (i.e. being the best dancer at the Halloween party). The main character was stuck-up but wanted to be "down". Throwing in a "y'all" but saying you don't like rap EVEN THOUGH she danced to rap music shows me just how confused this woman is. This type of attitude is why black people have such a hard time in the workplace. If she stopped paying so much attention to what she'd never be (white) and stopped downgrading what she wouldn't be(hip, black, and confident), she'd find her day goes by much faster and way less stressful. I thought this author had some really good points, but sentences like "I am n-word" show me nothing was learned. I thought Craig and Derrick were two of the strongest characters, but they were barely mentioned. Embracing your race but insulting it with racial slurs makes the main character just as bad as Lisa and Amy.
A Diary Worth Reading.......2005-02-02
Racy Thomas is a woman on a mission in Kim Williams', 40 Hours and an Unwritten Rule: The Diary of a Nigger, Negro, Colored, Black, African-American Woman.
After leaving home to go to college, Racy is determined to prove that her mother, Uncle Ray-Ray and a host of other family members are wrong. For the majority of her life, Racy's family has warned her about the funny ways of "the white folks." Convinced that her family cannot possibly be right, Racy decides against going to a historically black college and instead opts for a more culturally diverse campus. It is there that she receives her wake-up call and realizes that her family may not be wrong after all. After graduating, Racy leaves her college experience behind and walks into her first job with thoughts of
being treated as an equal. Once again -- she receives a wake-up call. It is then that she grows from what she describes as a nigger child trying to fit in, into a self-confident, African-American woman, that could care less what Caucasians think about her.
As an African-American woman, I found this book to be wonderfully hilarious. From coming into work and having to answer numerous questions about my braids, to eating leftovers in the break room and having to explain what I'm eating, to the occasional insensitive joke - I have experienced it all. Williams definitely has her finger on the pulse of Caucasian/African-American relations in the office.
If you are an African-American woman I definitely recommend this book. While it does not solve the world's problems on race-relations, it definitely confirms something that we should all know -- it is okay to be ourselves.

Refreshing.......2004-11-13
If choosing a title for a first novel is any indication of how well the novel plays into society - then 40 Hours and an Unwritten Rule should be at the top of the best sellers list - if for no other reason, for the "Racey" title. The title caught me instantly, as I'm sure if has or will with many others. And I was very happy to say that the contents were very true to the implied message...overcoming the stereo-types of a particular race and/or culture and standing your ground in the process while trying to stay true to "self". I know that so many people struggle with the issues that Racey put out there and it was refreshing to have a young, African-American women come to comfortable terms with herself in the end. Kim William's first novel was a thoughtful, true, fun and quick read. I guarantee that anyone who's attention is caught by the clever, catchy title will open the book to find situations that may be pages in their diary as well. Wonderful!
