An Introduction to Wavelets and Other Filtering Methods in Finance and Economics presents a unified view of filtering techniques with a special focus on wavelet analysis in finance and economics. It emphasizes the methods and explanations of the theory that underlies them. It also concentrates on exactly what wavelet analysis (and filtering methods in general) can reveal about a time series. It offers testing issues which can be performed with wavelets in conjunction with the multi-resolution analysis. The descriptive focus of the book avoids proofs and provides easy access to a wide spectrum of parametric and nonparametric filtering methods. Examples and empirical applications will show readers the capabilities, advantages, and disadvantages of each method.

Various types of non-stationarities are common in time series data from financial markets. This requires a guide for selecting among numerous tools to deal with the non-stationarity. A unified treatment of filters like this book is a great help since it provides a fast and rigorous introduction.
Chapter 2 is on the general linear filtering theory with cleverly designed applications for illustrative purposes. "Optimum Linear Estimation" is the focus of Chapter 3 in which the Wiener Filter and the Kalman Filters among others are studied. Chapter 4 is on Discrete Wavelet Transforms and provides applications like filtering intraday seasonality in FX market and an examination of the relation between money growth and inflation. Long memory processes with seasonal components are analyzed using wavelets in Chapter 5. Denoising of economics and financial time series is the topic of Chapter 6. The decomposition of variance across different frequency bands as well as the cross-covariance between two time-series at different scales is covered in Chapter 7. Finally, Chapter 8 is on artificial neural networks in which both an introduction to the concept and some design issues with appropriate model selection criteria are provided.
Discussison of these relatively advanced topics is very simple and clear without sacrificing important details. Highly recommended.
Easy to understand!.......2001-10-27
The book is a wonderful reference in that it brings together various filtering methods. It is an excellent introduction to the topic, clearly written and easy to understand. The text does not assume a high-level math background. Further, unlike the various books which simply provide the theory but include very few or no applications at all, this book by Gencay, Selcuk, and Whitcher has many applications that help you get the right picture.

Description:
In this study we compared the egg size, the eggshell thickness and the number of spermatozoa trapped on the perivitelline layer of the eggs in three blue tit (Parus caeruleus) populations across a heavy metal pollution gradient. No significant differences were observed in egg characteristics among study sites. Eggs from the two most polluted sites however, had significantly less spermatozoa on the perivitelline layer than eggs from the least polluted site. Our results suggest a significant effect of pollution on blue tit sperm concentrations in the infundibulum. Determining the number of spermatozoa on the egg membranes is relatively cheap and straightforward, which renders this technique a new and useful tool in biomonitoring.

Have you ever wondered if stuffed animals could talk?.......2002-08-18
When you were little did you ever wonder if your stuffed animals could talk? I always did and I guess I wasn't alone. "The World of Boo" is about the life our stuffed animals lead when we're not around. Author Duane Maddy brings a whole house full of stuffed animals to life in his character sketches of the different animals that inhabit his home. Each of his animals, some from childhood like Yellow Boo, some collected later on like Mugwort Neepy, have unique personalities and even interact with the other characters who inhabit the house. I liked this book because the author isn't afraid to reveal what his characters are thinking. Just like humans, some of the animals are helpful and nice to their shelfmates, while others are self-serving and always looking out for number one. I also liked how each character is accompanied by his or her photo. It's amazing that one person could have this many stuffed animals in his collection and still give each one a individual and distinct personality. If you've ever truly thought that your stuffed animals could think on their own, this book is for you. Finally, a grownup has captured on paper what many of us hoped all along - that our floppy-eared friends have a secret life all their own.

Did you have stuffed animals as a kid? If so, you'll enjoy this book. All the stuffed animals the author has collected over the years come to life in his character descriptions. As you read, you'll find yourself laughing, while thinking of the people that these beasts represent. One of my favorite characters is Purple Boo....who died in a tragic washing machine accident during a "reconstruction attempt." Ever try that one???
I think this is a great book as a conversation piece on a coffee table, or a gift for a friend. I highly recommend it.
