The revised guide to creating a successful financial future and reinvigorated organization

Demands of donors for accountability, transparency, and results have changed the way nonprofit professionals must organize their work. Developed from the author's firsthand experience as a fundraising consultant and volunteer, Beyond Fundraising, Second Edition examines the stewardship tools available through the Internet, the impact of accountability on planning, streamlined ideas regarding capital campaigns and feasibility studies, new techniques for annual giving that recognize the impact of the Internet, and new ways to involve increasingly busy board members in organizations. Retaining its primary focus on values and mission-based philanthropy, and on other key tenets of Kay Sprinkel Grace's beliefs and practices, this new Second Edition will take readers through the next decade, complete with reliable forms, checklists, and flowcharts to help readers better understand, visualize, and incorporate this new philosophy into their own nonprofit organizations.

5 out of 5 stars Gives a Strategic View of Every Aspect of Fundraising.......2005-08-20

I picked up this book just as the board of directors of the local theater group sent me to set up a campaign to raise capital for a new building. All of a sudden I was faced with the idea of raising lots of money instead of just the small amounts we need to put on individual productions.

To my surprise, although I guess I shouldn't have been, Chapter 7 is on Capital Campaigns. She summarizes them as: 'unique, occasional, exhausting, exciting, and productive; they focus organizations on a particular goal during a finite period of time and allow us to sharpen our sense of purpose and impact.' To that I can only say: Yup!

Ms. Grace has obviously been there, done that, not only in raising money for capital, but every other kind of fundraising activity as well.

This book is well written, and it positioned at a higher level than most fundraising books. By that I mean that she treats fundraising as almost an art form. Something where you don't need to feel like you're begging for a handout. Highly recommended.

Kay Sprinkel Grace is a wonderfully warm person whose personal mission is to help others develop their non-profit organizations to make the world a little better.

This book will help any development professional tie it all together is an easy to understand way. It will also be useful to organization volunteers who are affiliated with your organizations, particularly members of your board of directors.

Book Description

Beyond Fund Raising: What It Means

"Because this book is written for volunteers and staff people working in a sector that is based on the measurable success of its fund raising, the title may seem odd. The principle is simple: To go beyond fund raising, organizations must do more than fund raise. They must:

The need for the nonprofit sector to go beyond fund raising and to understand and apply development principles is growing. Increased competition among funders and a higher level of sophistication among donors have changed the nature of philanthropy, development, and fund raising. This shift in expectations requires organizations to practice the longer-term process of development: to go beyond fund raising." —Kay Sprinkel Grace

A donation to a nonprofit organization is an investment in the community the organization serves.... The philanthropic sector has an opportunity to build stronger communities through boldness, innovation, and new models for action that are based on results, not needs; on investment opportunities, not institutional financial urgency.... Donors do not give to organizations because organizations have needs; they give because organizations meet needs.

It is time to infuse the nonprofit sector with innovation and investment strategies that will develop long-term relationships with funders and volunteers. These relationships must be based on an understanding between organizations and their donor-investors of their mutual responsibility to provide essential community services. They must be inspired by shared values, partnership, respect, and vision.

The request for a gift is less an appeal for money to meet the organization's budget goals than an invitation to join in an entrepreneurial venture, an opportunity to invest in a process that will pay dividends in the form of a stronger, more vital community. Beyond Fund Raising is a blueprint for building new donor-organization relationships and explains how organizations can integrate fund-raising practices into the far more dynamic, comprehensive, and rewarding process of development. This book helps nonprofit organizations replace the feeling of begging with innovative practices that will create stable, ongoing donor-investor relationships.

Beyond Fund Raising examines the common concerns of many nonprofits and offers proven steps to attract and retain donor-investors—not just to the organization, but to its mission. Supplemented with forms, task lists, and charts to help readers incorporate this new philosophy into their own organizations, this book shows nonprofits how to:

For fund-raising professionals, nonprofit executives, board members, other volunteers and consultants, Beyond Fund Raising offers the key to both a successful financial future and a reinvigorated organization.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Visionary.......2003-05-01

This book provides non-profit executives with a very practical approach to making their organizations more successful financially and more relevant to their audiences. I have advised many non-profits on a range of issues, and I am envious of Grace's admonition to "put away the tin cup." That's one of the truest, most important things that today's non-profit leaders could hear.

5 out of 5 stars Putting away the tin cup.......2001-08-09

Many fundraising books show you the mechanics of fundraising. Ms. Sprinkel does that, but more importantly, she shows the reader how to approach fundraising with the proper mindset. Gone it the "tin cup" mentality. Instead, she advocates that we approach fundraising with an investment mindset.

Having set the stage with her philosophical approach to fundraising, Ms. Grace proceeds to walk the reader through the different stages of fundraising, including annual and capital campaigns.

I used the information in this book to assist the development team at my children's school with a capital campaign. We trained a number of people in the art of fundraising and went on to raise the money needed for a new building. While I won't give Ms. Grace all the credit, I can say with confidence that the advice she dispenses in clearly written and very effective.

5 out of 5 stars Shared values in donor development makes sense........1999-11-01

Defining the difference between fund-raising and donor development was an eye-opener. In a non-profit world that is increasingly competitive for the donor dollar, Ms. Grace offers a powerfully different approach. Of particular interest was reference to values-based mission statements. Something from which every fund-raising organization can learn

      Book Description

Pluralism and the American political landscape-how political theories emerge and are transmitted

Pluralism at Yale: The Culture of Political Science in America explores the relationship between personal experience and academic theories of American politics. Through a detailed examination of the Yale University Department of Political Science between 1955 and 1970, including interviews with many of the political scientists involved, this book traces the way "pluralism," a predominately optimistic theory of American democracy which the Yale department helped to develop in those years, helped to support the American political regime. Merelman also analyzes the impact of social and political events on the decline of Yale pluralism and describes pluralism's continued political relevance today. Included are discussions of McCarthyism, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Vietnam War.

                Book Description

The coupling of biological and electronic systems has in the past few years emerged as a field of increasing importance. Achievements like the cardiac pacemaker have paved the way for more sophisticated approaches, such as the lab-on-a-chip and DNA computers. This book presents reviews on some of the most promising projects in this interdisciplinary research field, covering topics from bioinformatics to biosensor technology.

                          Book Description

Scientific Cosmology is clearly one of the most active physics research fields at present, and likely to remain so in the near future. Shortly after the pioneering cosmological work of Einstein, Georges Lemaitre proposed a model which some years later to be known as the big-bang model. In the early fifties an alternative proposal, the so called steady-state (expansion at constant density) model, became the fashionable model in prominent academic circles. The discovery of the cosmic background microwave radiation (Penzias & Wilson, 1965) made the steady-state model almost untenable. A quarter of a century later the inflationary model was proposed, becoming extraordinarily popular almost immediately. For some it seemed to combine attractive features of both the steady-state and the big-bang models, by postulating a very early violent (constant density) expansion during a very tiny fraction of a second.

The book makes use of the best and most recent observational data, from the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE, 1992) to the Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP, 2003), to discuss the merits and demerits of inflationary cosmology for a general readership acquainted with the basic facts of scientific cosmology. A complete Glossary and a detailed Index help the reader to follow controversial topics, such as dark matter, dark energy, cosmic flatness and accelerated expansion.

A very funny, honest, account of Southern life in the late nineties. Kenneth can tell a good tale. I laughed, I cried, I plotzed! Then I got back up and read some more. Sweet, funny, and real. Occasionally acerbic but without any bitter aftertaste. More!

Forget Sex and the City and dive into Queer Chronicles, or as I see it: "Sex and the Southern Guy". Frank Blocker's alter ego, Kenneth, does it all and journalizes in prose that is both hyper-witty, incredibly detailed, eccentric, ironic, but most of all, just plain FUN. Atlanta's wild and gay 90s comes to vivid life; I especially enjoyed references to cruising at the "Homo Depot", the many and varied sideways glances towards "the EX", and a vivid recounting of turbulent events at the Atlanta Olympics. Plenty of political slant here -- Blocker/Kenneth has an opinion about EVERYTHING and is not shy about sharing! Bravo, Kenneth.

This book was a great, fun read! Fast paced and as funny or funnier than Bridgett Jones (sorry Helen).

At the start of "The Flame" I was feeling kind of like "Oh blah, blah, blah another book about an angry, pushy, flamed out gay man. Another diary format too. ACK! Why did I buy this?" But I very quickly got hooked on Blocker's quips and Kenneth's almost daily adventures. So much so that I found myself saying... "What the heck was he doing the last (insert number of days here) days???!!? Doesn't he know I need that information???!!??" whenever there was a break in days.

What I liked best was how I felt about Kenneth by the end of the book. While I started out not too flattering ("angry, pushy, flamed out gay man") by the last page I could see Kenneth's growth and transition from one dimension into three. It's really nice that Blocker doesn't rest on the typical stereotypes. At least not for long!!!
