                Book Description

The internal structure of a cell can be affected by signals in the form of small molecules outside the cell. These changes can then alter the shape or adhesiveness of the cell. This volume centers particularly on one family of cellular proteins which transmit these signals, the Rho Ras-like GTPases, and examines their role in normal cellular processes and development. Also discussed are their roles in cancer formation and microbial pathogenesis.

                Book Description

Paleoseismology (the study of "ancient" earthquakes) has become an important component of seismic risk analysis, which is mandated for nuclear power plants, dams, waste repositories, and other critical structures. This book is the first in the English language to be devoted solely to paleoseismology. It summarizes the development of the field from the 1960s to the present, encompassing material that is currently widely dispersed in journal articles. The 10 chapters included in this text span the entire range of techniques currently used in paleoseismic reconstruction, and are contributed by active practitioners at the forefront of paleoseismic research.

                * First book solely devoted to paleoseismology
                * Summarizes the development of the field from the 1960's to the present
                * Includes a comprehensive review of the techniques currently used in paleoseismology
                * Emphasizes practical methods of data collection and field studies
                * Covers interpretation of field data based on current theory concerning fault segmentation and recurrence cycles
                * Contains more than 170 line drawings and 50 photographs of paleoseismic phenomena

5 out of 5 stars Significant New Text in Paleoseismology.......1998-11-15

The ten chapters in this new text are a significant new contribution to paleoseismology. The book is divided according to different types of tectonic geomorphology. Each chapter is written by a geologist or team of geologists who are recognized specialists. It has particular application to California where we have strike-slip faulting, thrust faulting, normal faulting, and liquefaction. Each chapter carries citations of pertinent journal articles that have appeared in the past decade. Clear insights have been gained from these California earthquakes: 1989 Loma Prieta, 1992 Cape Mendocino, 1992 Landers, and 1994 Northridge events. The editor and co-author of several chapters is Dr. Jim McCalprin, an active member of the Association of Engineering Geologists and many other geological professional societies. He is to be commended for this seminal work; it is a unique and new contribution to paleoseismology. It is suitable for upper-division geology students, graduate students, and practicing engineering geologists. I use my copy several times per week for reference and citation in hospital and school site reviews. ---Robert H. Sydnor, Senior Engineering Geologist, California Division of Mines and Geology, Sacramento

                Book Description

The outside world scarcely knew of northwestern North America in the year 1700. The Pacific coast, from southcentral Alaska to Oregon's Cape Blanco, was uncharted until the Spanish and English explorations of the 1770s. Yet, when tectonic plates suddenly shifted there in 1700, a train of ocean waves -- a tsunami -- sped across the Pacific Ocean. When the waves came ashore in Japan, they flooded fields and washed away houses. Samurai, merchants, and villagers recorded the mysterious event, but they observed no storm and felt no parent earthquake. In Japan, this tsunami was an orphan.

The Orphan Tsunami of 1700 tells this transpacific detective story by presenting its primary sources, Japanese documents and North American sediments and tree rings. They tell of a catastrophe a century before Lewis and Clark's expedition that now guides preparations for future earthquakes and tsunamis in the North Pacific.

A rich array of graphic detail and narrative explains the creation, action, and lasting effects of earthquakes and tsunamis.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating detective work eccentrically presented.......2006-02-16

On January 26, 1700, a tsunami struck eastern Japan. Because they had experienced no preceding earthquake to explain the wave, contemporary Japanese writers recorded the event as an "orphan tsunami." Almost three centuries later, scientists in the western United States and Canada uncovered evidence of a massive earthquake (more or less a 9 on the modern scale) having occurred here at about that same time. This book presents the evidence for naming that quake the "parent" of the orphan tsunami, and also draws some conclusions about what an earthquake of that size might mean for 21st-century Cascadia.

There's an awful lot packed into this small book, and it's a fine example of how earth sciences, history, and other disciplines can work together to break new ground (so to speak) in our understanding of the past. But the way it's all presented in these pages? Oy. It kind of reminded me of the stereotypical mad scientist: you know he's a genius, but as he rushes around his lab, talking really quickly, pulling up charts and graphs and drawing on the chalkboard to prove his theories, all you can think is, "this guy is nuts."

In this case, the authors and their layout artists really went wild. From beginning to end, the book is a riot of old maps and new photos, illustrations, excerpts from Japanese and American diaries and records, line-by-line translations of Japanese reports, different-colored text blocks for sidebar articles, big two-paragraph-long photo captions, little illustrations of tectonic forces at work, screenshots from computer programs, and a lot more, all jumbled together. Although the information is interesting, I found sorting out the visual presentation tiring at times. Moreover, each two-page spread is like its own mini-chapter, with its own headline and point it's attempting to make. It is an innovative way to present scientific information (at least, I can't think of any book quite like it), but I'm not sure the method is quite perfected yet.

Still, I'm a non-scientist and I found it worth the effort to read this. And as someone living in the Cascadian earthquake region, it had more than a little personal relevance too.

5 out of 5 stars A welcome addition to any collection.......2006-02-02

This depiction of an orphan tsunami that battered the eastern coast of Japan in 1700 combines colorful imagery with scientific research to infer an account of what happened three hundred years ago. Japanese and American diaries, oral traditions, and ancient maps are combined with more recent photographs, figures and statistical data to support geological evidence found both in North America and Japan. The conclusion reveals an earthquake in the Cascadia Range of North America (estimated magnitude= 8.7 - 9.2) that generated waves which destroyed homes and caused a shipwreck and flooding over 7,000 kilometers away. The book features a table of contents in English and Japanese, author biographies, references, an index, and interpretations of Japanese language and writings used during the research. The artistry of the publication compliments the contents, and anyone with a curiosity for the earth sciences, global history, or cross-cultural studies will be intrigued by this portrayal of a significant natural disaster.

                              Book Description

This is a reference book for historians, earth scientists and others concerned with the seismic hazard of the area within the present borders of Turkey. The core of the book is a descriptive catalogue of every earthquake of any importance of which there is any record, between 1500 and 1799; full bibliographical references are included for each entry. The catalogue is prefaced by detailed comments on previous attempts to compile earthquake catalogues for the area up to the present, and by discussion of the primary source material utilised, in both Middle Eastern and occidental languages. The book contains maps of the regions affected by the larger earthquakes, and a general table of the events associated with the little-known seismic history of a fast-developing area of the Eastern Mediterranean. The book will also be of interest to engineers and, in particular, to those concerned with the mitigation of natural hazards.

                                Book Description

This book is a collection of 22 selected papers from the homonymous Conference held in September 2003 Milos, Greece. The aim of the conference was to serve as a forum for the presentation and constructive discussion of the state-of-the-art and emerging issues on the South Aegean Volcanic Arc.

In the first part of the book the tectonic- geodynamic setting and the present upper mantle structure of the Aegean area are discussed. It includes an interesting interpretation of data on the spatial distribution of intermediate focal depth earthquakes, fault plane solutions and deep velocity structures, to further investigate active tectonics related to the deep structure of the southern Aegean volcanic arc.

The second part deals with general volcanological, petrological and tectonic characteristics of the SAAVA presenting an extensive review of volcanological, chemical, isotope and tectonic data, using a large amount of new field and laboratory data. Interesting conclusions are presented regarding the present volcanic associations, the volcanic fields location and shape in respect to the large tectonic lineaments and the plate motions, the source of the SAAVA parental magmas.

Presented in the third part is an extensive review on the volcanic hazard assessment and the monitoring state of the SAAVA centers. Seismic and geodetic monitoring of the Santorini volcano and the recent (1995-1998) crisis of Nisyros volcano are presented and discussed.

The last part deals with hydrothermal deposits and processes in the SAAVA, as well as products and processes in adjacent areas with a particular interest and significance that link them to the SAAVA processes.

*Systematic re-evaluation on the geodynamic and tectonic setting of the Aegean active volcanic centers
*Thorough review with new data and ideas on the magma source region, the magma differentiation processes in both the deep and shallow levels, and the volcanological processes related both to the magma composition and storage depth as well as to the tectonic regime of the volcano growth area
*Up to date estimation of the volcanic hazard in the Aegean area, and a detailed presentation of the present state and the monitoring efforts of the South Aegean active centers

                                  Book Description

Turbulence is one of the most wide-spread phenomena in the universe. It relates to processes within the atmosphere, ocean, deep within the earth, as well as to the stars. The general public usually knows about turbulence from the unpleasant shaking of an airplane, or from disastrous atmospheric phenomena such as typhoons and hurricanes.
The chaotic and unpredictable behavior of turbulent movement makes it very difficult to study. The degree of understanding of turbulence is still far from being complete. Some progress was made with the recent advent of a new science--chaos theory. The authors succeeded in examining one basic feature of turbulence called helicity (or spirality) which is the foundation of explaining and predicting the generation of large turbulent structures (e.g. typhoons). Helicity is a universal feature existing not only in fluid flows but also in solid bodies and even in living organisms. This book can be especially useful for researchers and students in fluid mechanics, plasma, geophysics, biology, and meteorology.

                                  * Examines the helical mechanism of self-organization in nature and laboratory
                                  * Presents a unified approach to chaos and theory
                                  * Discusses similarities and differences in the formation of dynamic and magnetic structures
                                  * Successfully combines profound theoretical and experimental knowledge
                                  * Includes a disk with an expanded bibliographical database

William Price Fox was completely unknown as a writer in 1962 when his collection of short works of fiction, Southern Fried, was published as a paperback original. In a review, John K. Hutchens remarked: "If you never read a line by him outside these seventeen stories . . . you would say to yourself 'this is a writer'--because that is exactly what he is." Five years and 300,000 copies later, we know how correct was Mr. Hutchens's judgment, for Fox has captivated a wide audience of book and magazine readers as an author who can reproduce the humors and cadences of the South with a deft and sure touch. Southern Fried Plus Six presents the original 1962 collection with a bonus of six new Fox stories. The new pieces range from the story of a harrowing journey on a day coach during World War II ("Have You Ever Rode Southern?") to the fun and profit of bellhopping in a posh Miami hotel ("Room 306 Doesn't Tip"). Readers of Mr. Fox's recent novel, Moonshine Light, Moonshine Bright will find equal pleasure in this array of Foxian frolics.

                                  Customer Reviews:

                                  4 out of 5 stars funny, poignant -- a great read.......2002-10-31

I picked up this book on a whim and you should, too. These stories about the post-WWII rural South are often funny, sometimes moving and worth reading.

The stories are short and easy reads, so stick this book on your bedside table and read a story or two each night before going to sleep.

The only fault I had with "Southern Fried Plus 6" is that many of the settings and characters had a sameness to them. But this is a minor problem in what is overall a fine collection.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Utterly Wonderful.......2001-09-06

I read this book back when I was in college in the early sixties; it was just SOUTHERN FRIED then, a little paperback I picked up on impulse...it turned out to be one of the funniest books I had ever read, and I always regretted giving it away when I joined the army. I never forgot it - who could forget Leroy Jeffcoat with his fast nerves, or Round House with his razor, or the Buzzard's Lope, or, oh, don't get me started.

So I am delighted to see it back in print (with six new additions) and heartily recommend it. This is a particularly good book to have if you're reading in bits - coffee breaks and the like - because the stories are very short. (Some aren't even stories so much as little vignettes.) Be warned, though, your co-workers may look strangely at you when you burst into uncontrollable guffaws.

I can't think of any close comparisons - maybe Jeff Foxworthy on some sort of very dangerous drugs? Anyway buy this and read it. If it doesn't make you laugh you must have had your sense of humor shot off.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Collection to Represent Fox's Work.......2000-10-06

This a a good collection of stories to introduce readers to William Price Fox. "The Pit Fight" is an exceptional read because of its insightful comment on evils in human nature and has been enjoyed by many of his students that participating in his creative writing classes at the University of South Carolina. You will not regret buying it, it has something for everyone and you'll want to go back to the stories again and again.

5 out of 5 stars One for the ages........1999-11-29

If you haven't read "Southern Fried" then you're not well-read. You have also missed one of the funniest books ever written. That's "ever", as in e-v-e-r.

5 out of 5 stars Hello to Bill Fox.......1999-11-27

                                  11/27/99

I took courses in creative writing taught by Bill Fox at the University of Iowa Writer's Workshop in the early 1970's. I read all of his books and would recommend this book and any of the others to everyone.

I learned very much from his classes and he was always an excellent teacher and a gentleman.

If you read this, Bill, I never became a writer. I went into law school and am a lawyer, but have to use written words every day and the things I learned from the classes you taught have been of great assistance to me, even this many years later.

Best wishes and if you ever read this, I would really enjoy hearing from you. I will never forget those days sitting around the large round table at Iowa City once a week with the other Workshop students and learning about writing from you.

                                  Sincerely, Jim Maher
