                  Book Description

In the Middle Ages, European nations raised standing armies to fight their foes. At sea, however, their resources were much more limited and largely dependent on privately owned vessels and their crews. To stimulate the growth and ardor of their fleets, the monarchs of Renaissance Europe offered the crews of their naval vessels and licensed privateers a chance to get rich by plundering enemy ships and cargoes. These actions gave rise to the doctrine and practice of maritime prize--a subject little studied but regularly referred to by C. S. Forester, Patrick O'Brian, and other popular writers about the era. Now, after a decade of research in European and American archives, Donald A. Petrie explains the origins of prize taking, the rules of the sea that became universally accepted among the maritime powers of the world, and the final decline of prize taking during the nineteenth century.

Most of the book is devoted to rollicking, never-before-published sea stories about this form of looting that helped define the last century of fighting sail. From the North Cape of Norway to the southern tip of Africa, from Charleston, South Carolina, to the East River of New York, these tales of high-seas adventure span a broad area and period. For readers fascinated by warfare in the days of sail, in both history and fiction, Petrie has unveiled the mysteries of prize taking in a manner that is highly readable yet thoroughly authentic. His book is the first such study to be published in this country since 1861.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  4 out of 5 stars Informative book.......2005-12-22

I found Donald A. Petrie's book to be very informative on how captured ships during the times of wooden ships and iron men era was dealt with. The time period in question lies between 1776 to 1815 although the book does covered some element of the American Civil War as well. The rules of taking ships during the time of war proves to be a highly complex affair as each nation seem to have their own rules andlaws. But on the whole, they generally followed the lead of the British navy since the British navy ruled the waves.

The book proves to be well written, well researched and the author takes pains to explained how it worked. He gaves example cases to reflect his points. He shows the difference between a legal privateer and an illegal pirate, how a ship can be "ransomed" on sea and how such claims can be held as legal debt even after the war. The author make pains to explained how a privateer have certain set of rules which govern his actions, rules that clearly separate him from a common pirate.

For any readers interested in naval history, this book should be a welcome source of knowledge. For anyone who's a fan of Hornblower, Aubrey, Bothilo and Rampage, this book will explained much.

                  5 out of 5 stars Government-Sponsored Piracy - Glorious Too.......2002-03-15

A neat little book on legal niceties of the sea anwering all your questions about Prize, that strange doctrine of international law dealing with the rewards for capturing enemy vessels at sea . Legal mysteries solved by this book include: whether an eighteenth-century admiralty court in Britain might treat an English-speaking privateer as a traitor, whether an American revolutionary might lawfully seize a British merchantman off the Norwegian coast, how many days' notice are required before a port's trade with neutral vessels can be blockaded; whether a seized Confederate vessel counts as prize in a Union court and whether modern sailors still have the right to share the spoils of an enemy vessel. Sterling stuff.

5 out of 5 stars The Prize Game by Donald A. Petrie.......2000-05-15

This book is a good resource for history buffs or anyone who's been drawn into the world of historical nautical fiction created by the likes of Patrick O'Brian or C.S. Forester. 'Prizes' were vessels of a rival nation captured by naval warships and privateers (private vessels operating under letters of marque and reprisal from their government). The taking and disposition of prizes were strictly 'regulated' by international law. The author: seaman, soldier, lawyer, businessman, politician and publisher, gives a good overview of the intricacies of prizes during the age of sail. He uses several case studies to discuss the practice of ransoming vessels, sea cartels, the distinction between piracy and privateering, prize courts, blockades, and the rights and responsibilities of everybody involved in the taking of prizes at sea. He concludes with a chapter that summarizes the rules of the prize game. His discussion focuses mostly on American actions during the period from the Revolutionary to Civil War, but that discussion invariably involves U.S. relations and interactions with England, France, Denmark and Norway. While the narrative lacked the excitement of the chase and capture that I find so addictive in Horatio Hornblower, it provided a historical foundation to make Hornblower's exploits that much more enjoyable. The work is well annotated for those wanting to dig deeper into the history or law of the naval prize.

                    Book Description

During the maritime wars of 1793-1815, the taking of prizes and the acquisition of prize money were vital aspects both of economic warfare and of the financial incentives to naval officers. Fortunes could be made; they could also be denied if the capture did not conform to prize law, which was in a state of constant development. This book investigates for the first time the interactions between all elements of the system: the principles of law, the rules of contraband and blockade, the statutes and orders of government, actions subsequent to capture, the activities of prize agents, and how the money reached the recipients to whom it was due, among other topics.

                      Product Description

Before December 1941, the United States had determinedly maintained an isolationist foreign policy and stubbornly remained neutral in the European war. With the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, this position changed overnight. Now faced with the prospect of war yet ill-prepared for the eventuality, the United States government found itself scrambling to launch a war effort. The Great Depression economy led to an inadequate supply of fast, modern ships and this, coupled with wartime losses worldwide quickly created a demand which far outstripped production. This generally left the government only one realistic option—seizure of vessels and other property from private owners. Although the government had this power, under the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution private property owners were entitled to just compensation for their goods. During and after the war, multiple lawsuits were filed against the government seeking retribution for transportation of pre- and post-war refugees, repatriation of destitute seamen, loss of pay, patent infringement and requisition of vessels for government service. This volume contains all naval and maritime-related claims brought against the United States government from World War II. These cases are presented chronologically according to the date of the incident which led to the lawsuit. Additional background is included when necessary to fully explain the nature of the claim. Each lawsuit was initially filed in a United States district court then petitioned to Congress or filed directly with the Court of Claims in Washington, D.C. Appeals were made to the Supreme Court but are mentioned only if the decision of the lower court was reversed. Appendices contain a glossary of shipping terms and a list of pertinent acts of Congress. Photographs and an index are also included.

I would have liked to have seen some more information about where Bacillus thuringiensis actually came from (Biologically) and what it actually is (again biologically).

                            Book Description

John Tyler Bonner, a major participant in the development of biology as an experimental science, is the author not only of important monographs but also of a wonderfully readable book, Life Cycles, which is both a personal memoir and a profound commentary on the central themes of biology. This volume of essays presents new material that extends the concepts from Life Cycles and his other writings. Its originality lies in comparing key basic biological processes at different levels, from molecular interactions through multicellular development to behavior and social interactions.

The first chapter in the book discusses self-organization and natural selection; the second, competition and natural selection; and the third, gene accumulation and gene silencing. The fourth chapter examines the division of labor in organisms at all levels: within the organelles of a cell, within groups of cells in the guise of differentiation, within groups of individuals in an animal society, and within our culturally determined human societies. The work closes with a charming personal history of sixty years of changes in the field of biology, including the transformation in the ways that research work is funded.

                                  Book Description

This volume collects the invited lectures and contributed talks of the NATO Advanced Studies Institute (ASI) held in Kemer/Turkey, from 22nd September to 2 October 2003. The meeting brought together experts from several fields in nuclear physics in which rapid progress has been made in recent years. Ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions have been investigated at CERN and at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Several talks review the present status of experiments and develop the theory of nuclear reactions at ultrarelativistic collisions energies. The properties of hot and dense hadronic matter are studied and the predictions of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) for quark deconfinement and the phase transition to the Quark Gluon Plasma are described. The dynamical description of phase transitions in small systems and the methods of nonequilibrium many body theory are covered by several speakers. Furthermore the available information on the nuclear equation of state, the properties of cold dense quark matter, and colour superconductivity are presented in this volume. The close connection of these questions with astrophysics is drawn in several contributions related to the structure of stars, the dark matter problem, and the early universe. A second focal point of the ASI, besides highly energetic heavy ion collisions, is the physics of exotic nuclei far off stability and superheavy elements. Several leading experts in this field discuss the structure, the decay modes and lifetimes of superheavy nuclei both from the theoretical and the experimental points of view. Additional topics are the description of fusion and fission processes, the properties of halo nuclei and nuclei beyond the line of particle stability.
