Book Description

This book for advanced students and professionals in management and finance explains the financial appraisal of capital budgeting projects. It develops basic concepts, principles and techniques and applies them to case studies in forestry, property and international investments. Resource constraints are introduced to the capital budgeting decisions with a variety of worked examples using linear programming techniques. All calculations are extensively supported by Excel workbooks on the Web, and end of chapter questions.

1 out of 5 stars Real options note covered.......2005-07-17

This book does not cover the frontier of investment analysis, ie real options (option analysis). In my view, this book remains a DCF study, hence would be suitable only as an introductory text.

    Book Description

The theory of complex responsive processes and its implications for those working within organizations has become the focus of increasing interest in recent years. This is in good part due to the success of the editors' previous groundbreaking theory, Complexity and Emergence in Organizations.

In this innovative new series, the editors have focussed on what these ideas mean for practitioners tackling real organizational issues, and how they can be used to make sense of the changes and challenges which organizations must face. This book introduces and explores the possible meanings of the idea of "working live." It makes sense of the sense-making experience itself, drawing attention to the way ideas and concepts emerge "live" in all conversations in organizations. An appreciation of the open-ended, improvisational nature of ongoing human communication becomes key to such an understanding. The chapters, all written by experienced managers and consultants, explore:
    · How various forms of improvisation in social interaction can inform ways of appreciating how those links are forged
    · How these insights can illuminate the challenges of managing, developing and changing organizational practices

In Experiencing Risk, Spontaneity and Improvisation in Organizational Life, Shaw and Stacey explore, through the real-life experiences of practicing managers, some of the emerging themes and practical insights that can be drawn from an improvisational view of organizational life. With contributions from managers in both the private and public sectors, the book explores human communication skills and interactions to provide a unique exploration of "working live". It will be of interest to advanced students and practitioners.

      Book Description

Risk behaviour and risk management in business life influence a wide range of fields in which only a very limited amount of research has been undertaken. These topics have often been treated as if they were theoretically and practically isolated from other fields, the so called risk archipelago problem. What is actually needed is another focus, in which the problem of risk is treated as a central theme. The demand for interdisciplinary research means that there is a need for crossing scientific boundaries. In approaching risk problems from a holistic perspective there is also a parallel need for linking the scientific and the business worlds. Researchers must work closely together in concrete multidisciplinary research projects and in co-operation with the industrial world in seeking out and solving research problems of importance.
This book contains selected and re-written papers, and key-note speeches presented in a risk-seminar that Stockholm University organised in June 1997. The seminar, in which 200 researchers and practitioners from 26 countries participated, was divided into four main topic areas: Risk Assessment and Credit Management, Psychology in Business Life, Risk Management in Small Firms and Law and Business Risk.
In writing this book, the editor invited eight professors from four continents to assist him in introducing the reader to the different and scientific disciplines and in explaining the need for interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary risk research projects. The book consists of eight chapters and the target groups are researchers, doctoral and master students at universities and business people working in the risk management area.

5 out of 5 stars Splendidly straightforward, clear, and understandable for the introductory plasma physics student.......2007-06-27

I have been reading this book as part of the preparation for my internship this summer, and have been nothing but pleased with it. Bellan writes after my own heart, his equations are well explained and in most cases derived for the reader. Steps in the derivation are narrated in a clear manner, and enough steps are shown in them that the reader can do just that, read. Many physics books I find the reader must be equipped with a writing utensil and paper to follow along and learn fully from the text. Bellan leads the reader through the derivations by the hand, and all one has to do is follow. He explains difficult topics well, and politely reminds the reader of even the most obvious ideas when they come up from time to time.

My only quip in the book is the lack of definition of terms. Oft, Bellan writes of a variable, or function early on in the book and proceeds to use the term as if the reader will remember what it is without a reminder. This was not the case for me when i first started reading it, and it is understandable in the regard that the symbols he uses to denote characteristic quantities and functions are commonly used in plasma physics, but if you are rusty you may find yourself referencing the first couple chapters for definitions of terms used much later in the book.

He takes a practical view on the matters, and touches on important topics used in experiment. The appendices are fantastic, one of which even includes an unnecessary (but welcomed) proof of the orthogonality of bessel functions. If i ever meet this guy, i would thank him for an excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars Spheromaks for Sophisticated Scientists.......2000-04-01

If fusion energy and astrophysical phenomena are your bag, and are fluent in calculus and partial differential equations, you too can learn about the wonders of spberomaks. Spheromaks are made from the stuff of the stars and sun, very hot ionized gasses wrapped in and among magnetic fields -- except that they are produced in the laboratory in a number of research centers around the world. The magnetic fields are formed and sustained by dynamo action, as is the earths' field and the fields in sunspots. It is very competently written by an expert in this topic, and a "must read" for scientists in the field and those with curiosity about such things.

2 out of 5 stars Poor quality version of a classic.......2006-10-07

There's a reason that this CD is priced so low. My low rating has nothing to do with the material itself, but the poor quality audio. Welles's outstanding oratory skills and clever sound effects are overwhelmed by the low levels of the vocal track combined with an unrelenting hiss. The CD isn't even good for "old-timey" atmosphere, since *in between* the words of the original program they seemingly removed noise so there is a kind of "stutter". It's like listening to the show over a bad voice-activated radio circuit. Underwater.

By all means, get this classic recording. Just get it in a better, cleaned-up version. This CD is no bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Still scary after all these years.......2006-02-11

This (in)famous radio play is beautifully acted and produced, and even now, after all the advances in what might be called fright technology, remains creepy. The writing (now seemingly a lost art in broadcasting) is also terrific: a nice adaptation of Wells' elegant prose, just purple enough for this sort of material. It's nice to see this great broadcast given the (relative) immortality of the CD format.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest broadcasts of all time.......2005-06-24

Ahh, the days when there was no such thing as television and people had to use their imaginations while listening to the radio.

I am 29 years old and I love collecting old radio programs, especially the "Suspense" series. I'm fascinated that people could write well enough to keep a listening audience's attention for a full thirty minutes and make them want to keep listening until the end. I have great respect for the actors and actresses of the era when radio was king as it takes a lot of talent to let your voice do the acting. Today, an "actor" or "actress" can get away with being attractive and being a bigger hit with trashy tabloids more than at the box office.

It is well known how much people were freaked out by this broadcast (so much so that the FCC launched an investigation including looking at whether or not Welles and his fellow actors were not part of some conspiracy to create such a hysteria) and, while listening to this, it's easy to imagine channel surfing on the evening of October 30, 1938 and catching the program well after Welles stated the obvious: That it was a radio play based on the H.G. Wells novel of the same title. It was authentic in that it included the names of men in FDR's cabinet and picked out small towns in Northern New Jersey where Martians initially landed. And, as another reviewer previosuly pointed out, the show was done in the same format that radio news shows were done then, so for those who missed Orson's explanation of the program, they were bound to think this was the real thing happening at that place and at that time.

Unfortunately, the mass hysteria and publicity (dare I say infamy?) was no doubt a jinx on the talented Welles. True, he made the mighty classic "Citizen Kane" in 1941 but, apart from that, he was, and still is, remembered as the guy who made people think that the world was really being attacked by Martians. Near the end of his life he made a comment on his career, "I started at the top and worked my way to the bottom."

It's a shame things turned out the way they did for Welles but one thing's for sure, he sure stirred up plenty of mischief on that Mischief Night in 1938.

                                  3 out of 5 stars How's the quality.......2004-11-14

This is not a review, but a question. I have heard the radio show on rather bad quality recordings, and my only hints of how it must have sounded are the snippets from the movie "The Night That Panicked America". If it sounded that good on the radio, then the impact can certainly be understood. It was well-produced. A Peruvian radio station also tried presenting War of the Worlds, and the angry people burned the station to the ground.

Is this CD a good buy in terms of restored audio quality? Can you actually hear the sound effects before the reporter calls attention to them?

If your first experience of WOTW is seeing the George Pal movie, then the plot of this radio play may seem confusing, but what's neat is that the radio play is more like the original story, with walking alien machines instead of ones that use a magnetic flux to fly.

And, I would say that the powers that be should release "The Night That Panicked America" on DVD. It would make a really nice four-pak: the original Wells novel, the Orson Welles radio play (with all the static and recording noise removed for the kind of quality you'd get a mile from the WCBS transmitter in New York), the George Pal movie and the 1970s movie about Orson Welles' broadcast. I hope someone puts them all together one day.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Antique Collectors.......2003-06-07

Halloween, 1938. It did'nt seem to dawn on people listening to this radio broadcast that it was only a phony hoax and Halloween prank being pulled on everyone. Why ? In the wake of World War 2, the most convincing form of communication and media was not television, but radio. Over the radio, an elaborate and powerfully charged broadcast like this could easily fool hundreds. And it did. Orson Welles, a familiar icon of cinema, narrated the events, in nearly journalistic fashion. His voice and his attention to details of the alien invasion frightened people and assured them that indeed they were being invaded by flying saucers.

This radio broadcast was inspired by the H.G. Well's novel "War of the Worlds", which was the first science fiction novel to consider the possibility or theory or idea of aliens. War of the Worlds also became a highly successful film in the 50's, one of the many drive-through films in which people enjoyed to see special effects at the time and full of camp horror. For antique collectors and fans of the genre, this is a must have. War of the Worlds in its original contents on the radio broadcast, Orson Welles as narrator, is heaven for fans.
