    Book Description

    Praise for
    COSO Enterprise Risk Management

"COSO ERM is a thoughtful introduction to the challenges of risk management at the enterprise level and contains a wealth of information on dealing with it through the use of the COSO framework. Detailed procedures covering a wide variety of situations are followed by a thorough explanation of how each is deployed. As a project management professional, I appreciate how the author addresses the need for risk management at a project level. His background as someone who 'practices what they preach' and realizes the impact of the Sarbanes-Oxley auditing rules comes through clearly in the book, and it should be mandatory reading for anyone seeking to understand how to tackle their own ERM issues."

              Book Description

1889. English naturalist, evolutionist, geographer, anthropologist, and social critic and theorist, who spent many years in the Malay Archipelago. On the basis of his observations of its flora and fauna he arrived at the theory of natural selection independent of Darwin; learning of their co-discovery led them to publish it in a joint paper. An American lecture tour became the inspiration for one of his major works, Darwinism, which consists largely of the topics he had lectured on, presented one chapter at a time. It remains one of his most frequently cited works. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

                Book Description

This multi-author book has been prepared by an international group of geoscientists that have been active in rift research since the late 1960s. In 1984, an informal, grass-roots study group was initiated to compare individual research results and to explore in greater depth the apparent differences and similarities in the interpretations from various rift systems. The group became known as the CREST working group, an acronym of Continental Rifts: Evolution, Structure and Tectonics, which not surprisingly became the title of this book.

Continental Rifts: Evolution, Structure, Tectonics presents an overview of the present state of understanding and knowledge of the processes of continental rifting from a multidisciplinary, lithospheric scale perspective. The chapters have been structured on each rift system in approximately the same synoptic sequence, so as to facilitate comparisons of rifts by the reader. The book complements its predecessors by presenting a more unified picture. It succeeds in presenting the status of a representative majority of the continental rift systems that have been at the forefront of recent research. For students and experienced researchers alike, this book will be of significant value in assessing the current state of knowledge and in serving as a framework for future research.

                Book Description

Well over a century after Darwin gave biology its unifying theory of evolution, the earth sciences experienced a similar revolution and the theory of plate tectonics took hold. Plate tectonics posed the idea that the earth's crust is divided into a number of large, thin plates always in motion relative to one another. In The Behavior of the Earth, world-renowned earth scientist Claude Allègre sets forth the exciting events in this contemporary revolution from its first stirrings in the nineteenth-century and Alfred Wegener's original model of continental drift (1912) through the development of its full potential in modern plate-tectonic theory. Few scientific theories have been so all-encompassing, and none has surpassed plate tectonics in explaining such a wide variety of geological phenomena, from the origins of mountain building to the formation of the ocean floor. As it integrated our knowledge of the earth's surface with the investigation of its interior, plate tectonics fused two previously autonomous strains of scientific inquiry. Continental mobility changed for all time our view of the earth from a static globe to an evolving, living planet, and allowed us to see that changes in the earth's surface are but exterior manifestations of a dynamic interplay of forces within the crust and the mantle. Allègre casts his lucid exposition of this scientific theory within the historical context of its struggle for acceptance. As he introduces us to the huge cast of personalities and researchers who contributed to the theory, he illuminates the complex role that the scientific community plays in the proliferation and acceptance of new ideas. Allègre is as insightful in discussing the human motivation for scientific endeavor as he is skillful in presenting the science that results from this effort. Richly illustrated and including a glossary, this book offers the reader rare access both to the central theory of plate tectonics and to the constellation of problems and possibilities that preoccupy earth scientists today.

5 out of 5 stars I got here from there.......2006-04-25

I started reading Vincent Courtillot's Evolutionary Catastrophes (volcanism) first in order to gain a handle on the mass extinction argument and found that this book challenges Walter Alvarez's book T. Rex And The Crater of Doom (comet or asteroid bombardment). Therefore, I started reading that at the same time; which got me to pull out and start skimming David Levy's Impact Jupiter (comet expert). In the meantime, I thought it prudent to start reading The Behavior of the Earth by Claude Allegre (plate tectonics), and picked up Steven Stanley's book Extinction (global climate change). Recently I saw via a Google search that Linda Elkins-Tanton now thinks that perhaps meteorite bombardment could have allowed hot magma to vent thus causing global climate change and hence the mass extinctions. This is fun!

5 out of 5 stars Superb Introduction to Plate Tectonics.......2005-09-03

The grumpiness and even hidebound intransigence of 'traditional geologists' who see their entire geological worldview literally swept away by the breathtaking scope of Plate Tectonic theory is a fascinating aspect of the human side of science shown in books such as John McPhee's. McPhee himself notes this, referring to geosynclines -- a mainstay of the 'old' geology -- as "a rational fiction", and that "he is following a science as it lurches forward from error to discovery and back to error" (referring to an early mis-constructions).

A book I glanced through, _The Colorado Plateau : a geologic history_, by Daniel L. Baars, has an editorial-style Preface written by just such an annoyed 'old geologist', excoriating the "religious fervour" shown by adherents to the new theory. And I might add that, after reading several books with PT as a basis, I found this book (written in the '70s and re-printed), with it's 'old-style' terminology and complete lack of the plate-tectonic grand-scale overview of why such-and-such a geological feature is there in the first place, to be quite unreadable and boring in the extreme.

_The Behavior of the Earth: Continental and Seafloor Mobility_, on the other hand, is neither boring nor unreadable, while providing an excellent historical approach to presenting PT theory, from Wegener to the current period (1988 was the date of publication, but this is no drawback from this general reader's perspective). It pays very welcome attention to the subject from a History of Science perspective, with careful attention to the scientists who provided each new advancement, while explaining the technical aspects of the theory with many pictures and diagrams. I found it an excellent supplement to McPhee's books, which mostly lack visuals to fill out his word-pictures, and I referred many times to the seafloor-spreading and ocean-basin maps while reading McPhee.

                  Book Description

Intraplate strike-slip deformation belts are common tectonic features, particularly at convergent plate boundaries, where they are produced by both oblique convergence and continental indentation. These lithosphere-scale structures, which also occur in other geodynamic environments such as passive margins, are characterized by complex structural architectures, by the occurrence of large earthquakes, and by the fast uplift and/or subsidence of localized crustal sectors. Intraplate strike-slip belts can also control the ascent and emplacement of deeply-sourced magmas. In some cases, intraplate strike-slip belts link with oceanic fracture zones and transform faults, transferring transform shear from the ridges to the interior of the plates. This evidence has an important impact of the classical concept of transform faulting.

This volume contains 13 papers from an international field of contributors. Studies of intraplate strike-slip deformation belts from Africa, Antarctica, Eurasia, North America and South America are included.

5 out of 5 stars The clearest, simple explanation of Plate Tectonics in print.......1999-08-26

This book is not out of print. The 2nd edition is still published by Geo-Resources Associates, 2236 Bunker Hill Drive, San Mateo, CA 94402. "An extremely lucid account of how plate tectonics works" is what an early review in Geotimes reported. The book is designed for the layperson with no background in geology. It was used in more than 250 different colleges and universities in teaching introductory geology, oceanography, and paleontology. The author has also written a definitive history of part of the plate tectonics revolution, thus this little book benefits from his deep understanding of the subject. He is able to explain the most complicated aspects in ways that appeal to the novice. Its clarity is singular.

                        Book Description

Continental Drift: Colliding Continents, Converging Cultures is as much an account of the impressions Western culture made on Constantin Roman as a young researcher from behind the Iron Curtain as a personal history of the developing new science of plate tectonics. The book elucidates the author's struggles against a web of bureaucracy to secure his rights in the free world while exploring historical events. A refined observer of the contrast of cultures between East and West, Roman's personal story relates his encounters with eminent scientists, artists, and embassy officials. Constantin Roman defied communist restrictions by coming to England in 1968 on a NATO travel grant. After being encouraged by Keith Runcorn at the University of Newcastle to stay in Britain for a higher degree, he received a Ph.D. scholarship at the University of Cambridge. This is where he studied under Sir Edward Bullard when plate tectonics was in its infancy, when the concepts of continental drift and sea floor spreading were galvanizing geology. As a continental student adrift on English shores, Roman soon staked his claim on the plate tectonics map with his work on the deep earthquakes of the Carpathians. But the stakes became higher with a race against the clock to be the first to publish a plate tectonics solution to the Himalayan earthquakes. Continental Drift delves into all of this and more. It will delight earth scientists, physicists, and general readers as well as historians of science, who will find a wealth of personal recollections of key figures in the continental drift story.

                              Book Description

The evolution of oceanic plates is very well described by plate tectonic theory, but the study of continental tectonics is more complicated. Continental plates have a different rheology, a greater mean age, a higher heat productivity, and are more heterogeneous in composition. An understanding of continental tectonics requires, therefore, that these effects upon rigid plate behaviour be taken into account. This book brings together a series of papers which explore various aspects of the deformation of continental lithosphere, covering different tectonic settings from the Palaeozoic to the present day. These include the processes of terrane accretion and juxtaposition, the exhumation of high-pressure terrains, and mechanisms of crustal extension and rifting. The book will be of general interest to a broad audience of earth scientists concerned with global tectonics, continental growth processes, and the deformation of the continents during collision, exhumation and extension.

                                Book Description

Despite ten years of intensive research, many questions remain unanswered concerning the nature of the electronic structure (Fermi vs non-Fermi liquid) and mechanisms of superconductivity. Spectroscopy of High-Tc Superconductors, A Theoretical View provides a current, comprehensive review of the experimental results and theoretical interpretations concerning elementary excitation spectra (electronic, phononic, charge, and spin fluctuations) in high-Tc superconductors (HTSC). It discusses accepted microscopic models that describe the electronic structure of the copper-oxide plane - the three-band model, the generalized Emery model, the one-band Hubbard model, different kinds of the t-J model, and the regular Kondo-lattice model - and compares them with ARPES experiments. Leading Russian researchers also consider experimental results obtained by Raman scattering both by phonons and electronic excitations, including magnetic excitations in antiferromagnets in the normal phase, on almost all the types of superconducting cuprates. The results are treated theoretically with the emphasis on features thought to be related to superconductivity. The book also gives an account of the properties of the microwave surface impedance and complex conductivity as functions of temperature common for high-quality single crystals: YBCO, BSCCO, TBCCO, and BKBO. The basics of the muon method and a review of experimental results for superconducting states of different HTSC-compounds are also presented. By offering a thorough examination of current research in the field, this book will appeal to advanced students and researchers working in superconductivity and theoretical condensed matter physics.
