Value-at-Risk has emerged as the standard tool for measuring and reporting financial market risk. Currently, more than eighty commercial vendors offer enterprise or trading risk management systems that provide VAR-like measures. Risk managers are therefore often left with the daunting task of having to choose from this plethora of risk measures.
While basic VAR textbooks describe average VAR situations, the vast majority of these situations are abnormal.

This book is nicely written and gives a good introduction to topics of risk management. The exercices at the end of each chapter are such that you actually understand the subtility behind some of the concepts introduced.
Outstanding book in an overcrowded field.......2006-03-29
This is *the* book on financial risk management that puts it all together. In a volume that is less than half the size of comparable titles in an overcrowded field, Christoffersen packs the most amount of insight and practical knowledge possible. The best part of the book is how he quickly and directly dives into the empirical part of risk measurement - after all, a spreadsheet with real-world data is worth a thousand formulas, and any risk manager typically deals with the real world. To me the fact that the book is not hung up on a single risk metric (VaR for example) is doubly commendable. The book is superb in its coherence and flow, and choice of topics, not to mention the lucidity of presentation. Work through each chapter and the empirical exercises, and you will probably know far more about the nature of financial risk than most practitioners. Five unreserved stars.

I actually learnt elements of risk management and derivatives in a graduate program using this book.
Though I was a perfect amateur in this area, I could understand the essence without taking so much time. That was because this book is short and to the point. Additionally, it is a fair bit practical by adding Excel work files full of models and functions often used in Financial industry. I think the book is also well designed for independent study. All answer files of exercises are contained in an attached CD-ROM.
The best book without question.

Here is an overview of modern computational stabilization methods for linear inversion, with applications to a variety of problems in audio processing, medical imaging, seismology, astronomy, and other areas. Rank-deficient problems involve matrices that are exactly or nearly rank deficient. Such problems often arise in connection with noise suppression and other problems where the goal is to suppress unwanted disturbances of given measurements. Discrete ill-posed problems arise in connection with the numerical treatment of inverse problems, where one typically wants to compute information about interior properties using exterior measurements. Examples of inverse problems are image restoration and tomography, where one needs to improve blurred images or reconstruct pictures from raw data. This book describes new and existing numerical methods for the analysis and solution of rank-deficient and discrete ill-posed problems. The emphasis is on insight into the stabilizing properties of the algorithms and the efficiency and reliability of the computations.

Description:
Leaf area index (LAI) is an important variable needed by various land surface process models. It has been produced operationally from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data using a look-up table (LUT) method, but the inversion accuracy still needs significant improvements. We propose an alternative method in this study that integrates both the radiative transfer (RT) simulation and nonparametric regression methods. Two nonparametric regression methods (i.e., the neural network [NN] and the projection pursuit regression [PPR]) were examined. An integrated database was constructed from radiative transfer simulations tuned for two broad biome categories (broadleaf and needleleaf vegetations). A new soil reflectance index (SRI) and analytically simulated leaf optical properties were used in the parameterization process. This algorithm was tested in two sites, one at Maryland, USA, a middle latitude temperate agricultural area, and the other at Canada, a boreal forest site, and LAI was accurately estimated. The derived LAI maps were also compared with those from MODIS science team and ETM+ data. The MODIS standard LAI products were found consistent with our results for broadleaf crops, needleleaf forest, and other cover types, but overestimated broadleaf forest by 2.0-3.0 due to the complex biome types.
