5 out of 5 stars very helpful.......2005-07-04

As a non-financial manager that had only learned the financial aspects of management "by osmosis" (as the authors say), I've felt this book closed several gaps of financial knowledge, with excellent to-the-point explanations, always backed up with realistic cases. I feel much more confident to make some decisions now, and to defend my points against my CFO (and know when to agree with his). I strongly recommend that book to every manager without an academic background in finance.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......1998-10-04

This book explains how to assign a value to options in understandable terms. Some knowledge of calculus is helpful but not necessary to grasp the concepts. Equations are given for those interested.

A number of example portfolios consisting of calls and/or puts are given. Each portfolio is described in terms of aggressive or conservative, sensitivity to volatility, and performance relative to movements in the underlying stock. Graphs show the current and expiration date values of the portfolio versus the price of the underlying stock.

Baxter's book, "Financial Calculus: An Introduction to Derivative Pricing", concentrates on the math. This book puts its emphasis on trading strategies.

    Description:
This paper explores the state of practice regarding aircraft financial evaluation. Traditional measures of aircraft economic viability, including direct operating cost comparison, ignore both the non-cash elements of costs, and the time value of money. Practitioners adopting more advanced techniques often go straight to the net present value calculation using an industry standard discount rate, ignoring critical problems such as estimating the cost of capital, quantifying the highly uncertain economic environment airlines face, and valuing the flexibility offered by manufacturer options and operating leasing. We propose taking advantage of the potential flexibility of the net present value approach by close attention to the choice of discount rates to flesh out investment/financing interactions, use of Monte Carlo analysis to quantify risk up front, and real options analysis to better understand the value of flexibility to aircraft operators.

                Description:
This article proposes the concept of the biometric border in order to signal a dual-faced phenomenon in the contemporary war on terror: the turn to scientific technologies and managerial expertise in the politics of border management; and the exercise of biopower such that the bodies of migrants and travellers themselves become sites of multiple encoded boundaries. Drawing on the US VISIT programme of border controls (United States Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology), the article proposes three central themes of the politics of the biometric border. First, the use of risk profiling as a means of governing mobility within the war on terror, segregating 'legitimate' mobilities such as leisure and business, from 'illegitimate' mobilities such as terrorism and illegal immigration. Second, the representation of biometrics and the body, such that identity is assumed to be anchored as a source of prediction and prevention. Finally, the techniques of authorization that allow the surveillance of mobility to be practiced by private security firms and homeland security citizens alike. Throughout the article, I argue that, though the biometric border is becoming an almost ubiquitous frontier in the war on terror, it also contains ambivalent, antagonistic and undecidable moments that make it contestable.

From the supplier: The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has included a statute in its guidelines governing insurance product sales by national banks which would make it illegal for a bank to tie the obtaining of credit by a client to the purchasing of insurance. Other guidelines governing bank insurance sales include disclosing the absence of Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation coverage for insurance products and separating insurance from banking functions within banks.

                    Description:
This article provides a critical analysis of existing approaches to the prevention of heroin overdose in Australia. It draws on almost 2 years of ethnographic research with street-based injecting drug users (IDUs), street-based sex workers and service providers in Melbourne, Australia's second largest city, and on recent anthropological and sociological work on governmentality. The substantive sections of the article argue: (1) that heroin overdose prevention in Australia contains implicit or explicit assumptions of rationality and personal autonomy, continues to emphasise individual behaviour change and inscribes a self-disciplined, self-aware, self-regulating subject; and (2) that the social, cultural and economic realities-the 'lived experience'-of street-based IDUs and sex workers may undermine or hinder the successful adoption of overdose prevention strategies. The paper concludes by arguing that the 'chaotic' practices of street-based IDUs and sex workers arise in response to particular 'risk environments', and that individually focused overdose prevention strategies, while an important first step, need to be complemented by measures addressing the macro- and micro-aspects of risk environments.

From the supplier: Lloyd's of London is planning to reorganize the way it governs itself. Starting Jan 1, 1993, a Market Board and a Regulatory Board will be set up to take over regulatory and oversight responsibilities from the Council of Lloyd's, which will concentrate on its disciplinary and legislative responsibilities. A new position of chief executive officer will be created to oversee operations, while the existing position of Lloyd's chairman will be retained. A Lloyd's investigation into its excess-of-loss business, where large losses occurred, has not found any improper conduct.

3 out of 5 stars good book for beginners--very basic.......1998-06-18

This book was great when I got my chin. I consulted it all the time for very basic information. However, it does not have enough info on illnesses. It is simple and easy to understand but I definitely recommend getting an additional book for more detailed info.

2 out of 5 stars good pictures, short on information, poor housing suggestion.......1997-05-17

The barrons book on chinchillas is a very short beginner book that has nice pictures. However, the book has little more than just the barest of information, nothing on diseases, and very little other than general information. The suggested cage is constructed of wood and since chinchillas are chewers, it is a poor choice of frame for a chinchilla cage, although it would work for a rabbit. Book Description

Palaeogene and Cretaceous palaeoceaongraphy has been the focus of intense international interest in the last few years, spurred by deep ocean drilling at Blake Nose in the North Atlantic as well as the need to use past climate change as input for modelling future climate change. This book brings together a number of review papers that describe ancient oceans and unique events in the Earth's climatic history and evolution of biota. The papers show evidence of periods characterised by exceptional global warmth such as Late Palaeocene Thermal Maximum and Cretaceous anoxic events. Geochemical records and modelling will make the reader aware that these periods were forced by greenhouse gases. This information is essential for understanding the response of the ocean-climate system to the current input of fossil fuels. In this sense, the book contributes to the understanding of fundamental aspects of Earth's climate, the carbon cycle, and marine ecosystems. A number of papers describe massive mass wasting deposits resulting from energy released by the bolide impact at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary as well as the geochemistry of the boundary itself. Additional papers cover aspects of cyclostratigraphy and biostratigraphy of Palaeogene and Cretaceous records. Readership:Earth Scientists interested in Palaeogene-Cretaceous palaeoceanography, extreme climate modelling, Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary, Late Palaeocene Thermal Maximum, Cretaceous anoxic events, as well as those specifically interested in radiolarian, dinoflagellate and coccolithophorid stratigraphy.

                              Book Description

Statistical physics addresses the study and understanding of systems with many degrees of freedom. As such it has a rich and varied history, with applications to thermodynamics, magnetic phase transitions, and order/disorder transformations, to name just a few. However, the tools of statistical physics can be profitably used to investigate any system with a large number of components. Thus, recent years have seen these methods applied in many unexpected directions, three of which are the main focus of this volume. These applications have been remarkably successful and have enriched the financial, biological, and engineering literature. Although reported in the physics literature, the results tend to be scattered and the underlying unity of the field overlooked. This book provides a unique insight into the latest breakthroughs in a consistent manner, at a level accessible to undergraduates, yet with enough attention to the theory and computation to satisfy the professional researcher.

                              Book Description

Beloved Southern chronicler James Wilcox, with his rare blend of hilarity and compassion, is a novelist whose work has been featured in both Harold Bloom's The Western Canon and GQ's recent list of the forty-five best fiction books published in the last forty-five years.

Tula Springs, Louisiana, first created by Wilcox two decades ago, is striving to find its foothold in a disarmingly modern world. So, for that matter, is Lou Jones-middle aged, sensitive, and gutsy-who lives in a $295,000 Cajun cabin and works as the receptionist at a fundamentalist health emporium in a defunct train station. It's the only job in town that doesn't require computer literacy and she earns three times what the state college paid her for teaching music theory. Soon the bemused Lou finds herself embroiled with the North American Bassoon Society, a gun-toting tax assessor, her maid's enigmatic polite-society mother, her laid-off husband's obsession with his childhood home, and the theft of a much-disputed ornate dresser. Heavenly Days is James Wilcox at his best, a gift to his longtime readers and to a whole generation of new ones.

                              2 out of 5 stars Confusing plot.......2004-09-28

I have never read any of Wilcox's books before so I can't compare them. While he has an ear for dialogue, I kept getting lost in the plot and the relationship of the characters. I know this was supposed to be a funny book, but the protagonist was too much of a sad sack to invite any identification for the reader and the lines weren't snappy enough to get me laughing. Instead I felt sorry for "Lou" while not really liking her that much. I kept wanting to stop reading the book as it didn't seem to go anywhere in the plot. The ending confused me, as it did another reviewer. So my recommendation is pass on this one and try another of Wilcox, as the author seems to be quite popular.

5 out of 5 stars Tula Springs revisited.......2003-10-01

"Heavenly Days" is cause for rejoicing among James Wilcox's fans, a new and long-awaited installment to life in Tula Springs, Louisiana. Is it really twenty years since Wilcox introduced us to this quaint little town just across the border from Mississippi (where virtually everyone goes to shop at the mall)?

The pleasure of reading "Heavenly Days", which has all the comedy, eccentric characters and mix-ups as the preceding four novels set in Tula Springs, sent me back to the beginning to re-read those four books ("Modern Baptists," "North Gladiola," "Miss Undine's Living Room" and "Sort of Rich"). Maybe it was the desire to reacquaint myself with Bobby (Carl Robert) Pickens, Mayor Binswanger, the Keelys, the Quaids and Burma (whatever her last name is at the moment), all of whom appear in the newest installment to the drama that is Tula Springs. Maybe it was the desire to experience again Wilcox's enviable ability to find exactly the right word for maximum comic impact. Or maybe it was the desire to go back to visit a pleasant, if somewhat dysfunctional place.

Wilcox's characters appear and reappear as if they are members of a repertory company; the star of one has a walk-on, or perhaps only a mention, in another. That is not to say that one must read all of the preceding books to enjoy this one. As a stand-alone piece, it works beautifully. But reading the preceding books adds another level of enjoyment -- and history -- to the experience of reading each individually.

Maybe that's why Lou Jones, the star of "Heavenly Days", seems so familiar. Her name does not appear in any of the previous installments, (at least not in a form that I recognized) but we just know that she has been there in Tula Springs all along. Perhaps she was one of shoppers at the Winn Dixie or maybe she was at the courthouse paying a fine to the Citizens Patrol (which is now replaced by a security firm). Like Mrs. Coco in "North Gladiola", Lou has reached mid-life and feels a bit left behind. Unlike Mrs. Coco, Lou has perfected the ability to live in a state of denial. Once a month, she gets up at 4.30 a.m. to write a column for the North American Bassoon Society newsletter, even though she has not played bassoon in several years. While she waits and hopes for a job teaching music at the local community college, she works as the receptionist at WaistWatchers, a fundamentalist health spa, all the while doubting the viability of shedding pounds for Jesus. She and her husband are living in separate houses, but they are not -- as she continually and emphatically asserts -- having marital problems. And, Lou ignores signals her body is sending her -- even though the reader can not -- signals that take her right into the final scene. Wilcox treats Lou with humor, but he never lets us loose sight of her bewilderment in the face of a world that seems to be going on without her.

We can always count on Wilcox for zany humor and mad-cap fun. We can also count on him to explore human relationships and foibles. In the first three Tula Springs books, the balance was more towards the former, so that even though the events of "Miss Undine's Living Room" centered on a possible murder, the tone remained light and farcical. In "Sort of Rich" Wilcox turned more dramatic, in a story that had moments of real foreboding and suggestions of foul play. Now, in "Heavenly Days" he has found a new balance. We laugh at Lou, but we also worry about her -- and for good reason. She is a bit lost in a world that she has helped create for herself and, apparently, only sees one way out. Wilcox takes us there with her.

With "Heavenly Days", Wilcox has scored again. Hurray!

                              3 out of 5 stars Just a normal day................2003-09-30

I am truly struggling for the right words on this one! I have read almost all of James Wilcox's work, and applaud his brilliance in his humor, perfectly drawn characters, and just plain "people" that populate this town of Tula Springs! This one scared me. AND, most importantly,I did NOT "get" the end!! Was Lou crazy this entire time? Did she crack up at the end? Was she just an overly obsessive/compulsive person who wanted everyone to "do the right thing"? I cannot say that I was particularly fond of her. She was just too naive to be believed. But I also saw the soft, sad, woman who was trying to cope with a new age and a new definition of the Southern woman, smart, saavy, computer literate, and most importantly, one with her OWN VOICE! She just cannot do it!
Those unfamiliar with Wilcox's work may find this one a little too "quirkey". I would recommend starting with "Modern Baptists" or "Sort of Rich". I am STILL baffled!
I am really angry that you expect me to view the reviews of "others"!!! I wrote this review when there were NO OTHERS!!It was "Be the first to review this book" So, How can I "view them"?? And
how did the person before me "View" reviews??

Thank goodness that this book is out there so that people won't forget the great comedy team of Jim and Marion Jordan.

With plenty of pictures to put faces to names, the book thorougly recounts the lives of Fibber McGee and Molly and their supporting cast.

It's a quick and easy read, and a great peek inside the lives of one of the great comic duos.

While "Fibber McGee and Molly" is still beloved by fans of Old Time Radio, for the general public, the names mean nothing. Nor do most people know who Jim and Marian Jordon were.

But for the curious, those who want to know more about the show, this is the book to read. Not only because it is well-researched with interviews with Jim Jordon and others, but also it is full of photographs of Jim and Marian both before and during their years at 79 Wistful Vista.

Listeners to the show know it evolved over the years. The earliest episodes are almost unenjoyable and bear little resemblance to the show at its height. Why did the show evolve? Look here to find out. Favorite characters would come and go. But where do you turn to find out why? This book! And what was behind the "Fibber McGee's closet" routine? How and why did it come about? This will tell you why. How did the show handle the drafting of many of its most important stars during World War Two? Turn to these pages. Why did Johnson Wax end sponsorship? And why did the Jordans decide against playing the roles on television? This is the definitive book to answer those questions.
Easy-to-read type; single space, packs a lot of fact on the page.
                              This book is invaluable!

Forget the fact that there is no other book on the subject, Stumpf's Heavenly Days is the most comprehensive work on this classic radio show. Half the book is pictures (yes, one on every other page), though the quality is sometimes less than wonderful. Anyone looking for a detailed log is going to be disappointed, but if you're seeking a historical account, richly detailed, this is exactly what you need. No wonder there's not been another book on Fibber. It's unnecessary.

5 out of 5 stars This should be in every home library.......2002-12-11

I was given copies of this short book as gifts numerous times in my teen years and did not then realize nor value the book as I do now. I now hold this short book as one of the most important I have in my posession and hardly dare loan it out to anyone unless I have absule trust in having it returned. This is the last major message Patriot and LDS Church President and Prophet Ezra Taft Benson spoke on the subject of freedom. It is full of prophetic utterance that should be understood by all LDS people and liberty loving people everywhere, but it seems few have a clue. Indeed, the gadianton robbers "had seduced the more part of the righteous to come down to believe in their works and partake of their spoils."

Contemplate the great wisdom and divine influence that was exhibited by the noble Founders of the Republic. God inspired them, and Benson assures that God must make use of people in this generation who will be so inspired, so that our liberties might be maintained. Benson expresses his faith that liberty will be preserved. However he says, it "may cost us blood before we are through." Benson tells us what we must do if we desire to be among those who help save the Constitution from the brink of ruin, and frankly few there are who practice such principles or who have ever been made aware of them. That is why this book is so valuable as a teaching tool to help others get a greater understanding of correct eternal principles on which liberty is built. Ignorance of these principles permits socialism to run unrestrained, thus weakening our economy, destroying our rights or in essence violating our pursuit of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

As US Secretary of Agriculture under Eisenhower, Benson had been made to be host to Nikita Kruschev, leader of the USSR. He strongly opposed this state visitor and felt his visit a mistake, but nonetheless, he went ahead and hosted Kruschev for half a day at the Presidents request. During that half day in Washington, Kruschev arrogantly told Ezra Taft Benson that "you americans are naive" then proceeded to explain that Americans wouldn't accept communism outright, but would be fed small doses of socialism over time until one day America would awake and indeed be Communist. Benson said "It is happening, and they are ahead of schedule."

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the Constitution as it relates to us today........1998-12-13

If you can get this book you should, and you should read it and share it with your friends.

I cannot give this book a high enough rating. I have delivered over a hundred copies of this book to friends. It is too bad that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has let this book go out of print.

This is the best book that has ever been written to inspire men an women in the United States of America to awaken to the message of the Constitution of this nation and to stand together to save this nation and our Constitution.

It is time to wake up. This book may be getting old, but its wake-up call is not.

5 out of 5 stars Hallmark Address of the Prophet of Freedom.......1998-11-05

The late Ezra Taft Benson, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, gave this message at a Brigham Young University devotional assembly (the only one he gave as their "Prophet") and urged all members of the LDS Church to obtain a copy and read it.

I was in attendance when he gave the talk. When he stated that it is not the government's role to redistribute the wealth, I remember asking myself at the time, "Did he say that was good, or did he say it was bad?" I was confused. What would we do without Social Security, Welfare, Pell Grants, etc, etc. I was raised thinking these were an acceptible part of our society -- no problem. Frankly, I didn't even know what Socialism was and that the democratic party (as well as many republicans) embodies many of the same tyranical principles.

As soon as President Beson was done with his address, I made a beeline for the BYU bookstore and immediately purchased the talk he had just given: "The Constitution: A Heavenly Banner."

My life has not been the same since. I was fired up with a spirit of freedom and patriotism that has not left me. Since that time I have writen books, ran for office, authored many studies on principles of government and freedom as they are found in the scriptures.

Our nation is in a time of great danger, having embraced many doctrines which are not in keeping with those principles of freedom set forth by the Founding Fathers. We are at war with the forces of evil that would seek to establish a world socialist government -- the New World Order.

Just this evening (11/4/98) when I went shopping, I saw a young adult wearing a T-shirt with the letters "NWO" for New World Order splashed across the front of it, giving me the chills.

The warnings of Ezra Taft Benson (among other great soldiers of freedom) are going unheeded. I would urge all men and women who value freedom to read this excellent pamphlet by Ezra Taft Benson, awake to a sense of our awful situation, and put on strength in the Lord to bring the final victory for freedom as we pass through dark and troublesome times.

"Truth will prevail," Ezra Taft Benson often said, "if pains are taken to bring it to light." May we do so; and may his pains not be in vain.

5 out of 5 stars Restating the need to safeguard and honor the Constitution.......1998-08-24

I believe Mr. Benson served the Eisenhower administration as the Secretary of Agriculture. In this work he lays out a case for guarding and honoring the protections afforded to us by the Constitution. He also cautions against the erosion of these rights and protections. Many great quotable gems. A must for any fan of the Constitution. Although this book isn't new, the insights contained in it are still valid today.
