Western North Atlantic Palaeogene and Cretaceous Palaeoceanography (Geological Society Special Publication)
Manufacturer: Geological Society of London ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1862390789 |
Book Description
Palaeogene and Cretaceous palaeoceaongraphy has been the focus of intense international interest in the last few years, spurred by deep ocean drilling at Blake Nose in the North Atlantic as well as the need to use past climate change as input for modelling future climate change. This book brings together a number of review papers that describe ancient oceans and unique events in the Earth's climatic history and evolution of biota. The papers show evidence of periods characterised by exceptional global warmth such as Late Palaeocene Thermal Maximum and Cretaceous anoxic events. Geochemical records and modelling will make the reader aware that these periods were forced by greenhouse gases. This information is essential for understanding the response of the ocean-climate system to the current input of fossil fuels. In this sense, the book contributes to the understanding of fundamental aspects of Earth's climate, the carbon cycle, and marine ecosystems. A number of papers describe massive mass wasting deposits resulting from energy released by the bolide impact at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary as well as the geochemistry of the boundary itself. Additional papers cover aspects of cyclostratigraphy and biostratigraphy of Palaeogene and Cretaceous records. Readership:Earth Scientists interested in Palaeogene-Cretaceous palaeoceanography, extreme climate modelling, Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary, Late Palaeocene Thermal Maximum, Cretaceous anoxic events, as well as those specifically interested in radiolarian, dinoflagellate and coccolithophorid stratigraphy.

New Directions in Statistical Physics: Econophysics, Bioinformatics, and Pattern Recognition
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540431829 |
Book Description
Statistical physics addresses the study and understanding of systems with many degrees of freedom. As such it has a rich and varied history, with applications to thermodynamics, magnetic phase transitions, and order/disorder transformations, to name just a few. However, the tools of statistical physics can be profitably used to investigate any system with a large number of components. Thus, recent years have seen these methods applied in many unexpected directions, three of which are the main focus of this volume. These applications have been remarkably successful and have enriched the financial, biological, and engineering literature. Although reported in the physics literature, the results tend to be scattered and the underlying unity of the field overlooked. This book provides a unique insight into the latest breakthroughs in a consistent manner, at a level accessible to undergraduates, yet with enough attention to the theory and computation to satisfy the professional researcher.

Tula Springs revisited.......2003-10-01
The pleasure of reading "Heavenly Days", which has all the comedy, eccentric characters and mix-ups as the preceding four novels set in Tula Springs, sent me back to the beginning to re-read those four books ("Modern Baptists," "North Gladiola," "Miss Undine's Living Room" and "Sort of Rich"). Maybe it was the desire to reacquaint myself with Bobby (Carl Robert) Pickens, Mayor Binswanger, the Keelys, the Quaids and Burma (whatever her last name is at the moment), all of whom appear in the newest installment to the drama that is Tula Springs. Maybe it was the desire to experience again Wilcox's enviable ability to find exactly the right word for maximum comic impact. Or maybe it was the desire to go back to visit a pleasant, if somewhat dysfunctional place.
Wilcox's characters appear and reappear as if they are members of a repertory company; the star of one has a walk-on, or perhaps only a mention, in another. That is not to say that one must read all of the preceding books to enjoy this one. As a stand-alone piece, it works beautifully. But reading the preceding books adds another level of enjoyment -- and history -- to the experience of reading each individually.
Maybe that's why Lou Jones, the star of "Heavenly Days", seems so familiar. Her name does not appear in any of the previous installments, (at least not in a form that I recognized) but we just know that she has been there in Tula Springs all along. Perhaps she was one of shoppers at the Winn Dixie or maybe she was at the courthouse paying a fine to the Citizens Patrol (which is now replaced by a security firm). Like Mrs. Coco in "North Gladiola", Lou has reached mid-life and feels a bit left behind. Unlike Mrs. Coco, Lou has perfected the ability to live in a state of denial. Once a month, she gets up at 4.30 a.m. to write a column for the North American Bassoon Society newsletter, even though she has not played bassoon in several years. While she waits and hopes for a job teaching music at the local community college, she works as the receptionist at WaistWatchers, a fundamentalist health spa, all the while doubting the viability of shedding pounds for Jesus. She and her husband are living in separate houses, but they are not -- as she continually and emphatically asserts -- having marital problems. And, Lou ignores signals her body is sending her -- even though the reader can not -- signals that take her right into the final scene. Wilcox treats Lou with humor, but he never lets us loose sight of her bewilderment in the face of a world that seems to be going on without her.
We can always count on Wilcox for zany humor and mad-cap fun. We can also count on him to explore human relationships and foibles. In the first three Tula Springs books, the balance was more towards the former, so that even though the events of "Miss Undine's Living Room" centered on a possible murder, the tone remained light and farcical. In "Sort of Rich" Wilcox turned more dramatic, in a story that had moments of real foreboding and suggestions of foul play. Now, in "Heavenly Days" he has found a new balance. We laugh at Lou, but we also worry about her -- and for good reason. She is a bit lost in a world that she has helped create for herself and, apparently, only sees one way out. Wilcox takes us there with her.
With "Heavenly Days", Wilcox has scored again. Hurray!

Learn the Story of America's Forgotten Comedy Team.......2003-10-31
But for the curious, those who want to know more about the show, this is the book to read. Not only because it is well-researched with interviews with Jim Jordon and others, but also it is full of photographs of Jim and Marian both before and during their years at 79 Wistful Vista.
Listeners to the show know it evolved over the years. The earliest episodes are almost unenjoyable and bear little resemblance to the show at its height. Why did the show evolve? Look here to find out. Favorite characters would come and go. But where do you turn to find out why? This book! And what was behind the "Fibber McGee's closet" routine? How and why did it come about? This will tell you why. How did the show handle the drafting of many of its most important stars during World War Two? Turn to these pages. Why did Johnson Wax end sponsorship? And why did the Jordans decide against playing the roles on television? This is the definitive book to answer those questions.
Easy-to-read type; single space, packs a lot of fact on the page.
This book is invaluable!

The Constitution: A Heavenly Banner

This should be in every home library.......2002-12-11
Contemplate the great wisdom and divine influence that was exhibited by the noble Founders of the Republic. God inspired them, and Benson assures that God must make use of people in this generation who will be so inspired, so that our liberties might be maintained. Benson expresses his faith that liberty will be preserved. However he says, it "may cost us blood before we are through." Benson tells us what we must do if we desire to be among those who help save the Constitution from the brink of ruin, and frankly few there are who practice such principles or who have ever been made aware of them. That is why this book is so valuable as a teaching tool to help others get a greater understanding of correct eternal principles on which liberty is built. Ignorance of these principles permits socialism to run unrestrained, thus weakening our economy, destroying our rights or in essence violating our pursuit of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
As US Secretary of Agriculture under Eisenhower, Benson had been made to be host to Nikita Kruschev, leader of the USSR. He strongly opposed this state visitor and felt his visit a mistake, but nonetheless, he went ahead and hosted Kruschev for half a day at the Presidents request. During that half day in Washington, Kruschev arrogantly told Ezra Taft Benson that "you americans are naive" then proceeded to explain that Americans wouldn't accept communism outright, but would be fed small doses of socialism over time until one day America would awake and indeed be Communist. Benson said "It is happening, and they are ahead of schedule."
The Best Book on the Constitution as it relates to us today........1998-12-13
I cannot give this book a high enough rating. I have delivered over a hundred copies of this book to friends. It is too bad that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has let this book go out of print.
This is the best book that has ever been written to inspire men an women in the United States of America to awaken to the message of the Constitution of this nation and to stand together to save this nation and our Constitution.
It is time to wake up. This book may be getting old, but its wake-up call is not.
Hallmark Address of the Prophet of Freedom.......1998-11-05
I was in attendance when he gave the talk. When he stated that it is not the government's role to redistribute the wealth, I remember asking myself at the time, "Did he say that was good, or did he say it was bad?" I was confused. What would we do without Social Security, Welfare, Pell Grants, etc, etc. I was raised thinking these were an acceptible part of our society -- no problem. Frankly, I didn't even know what Socialism was and that the democratic party (as well as many republicans) embodies many of the same tyranical principles.
As soon as President Beson was done with his address, I made a beeline for the BYU bookstore and immediately purchased the talk he had just given: "The Constitution: A Heavenly Banner."
My life has not been the same since. I was fired up with a spirit of freedom and patriotism that has not left me. Since that time I have writen books, ran for office, authored many studies on principles of government and freedom as they are found in the scriptures.
Our nation is in a time of great danger, having embraced many doctrines which are not in keeping with those principles of freedom set forth by the Founding Fathers. We are at war with the forces of evil that would seek to establish a world socialist government -- the New World Order.
Just this evening (11/4/98) when I went shopping, I saw a young adult wearing a T-shirt with the letters "NWO" for New World Order splashed across the front of it, giving me the chills.
The warnings of Ezra Taft Benson (among other great soldiers of freedom) are going unheeded. I would urge all men and women who value freedom to read this excellent pamphlet by Ezra Taft Benson, awake to a sense of our awful situation, and put on strength in the Lord to bring the final victory for freedom as we pass through dark and troublesome times.
"Truth will prevail," Ezra Taft Benson often said, "if pains are taken to bring it to light." May we do so; and may his pains not be in vain.
