Go beyond earnings, and into value-based metrics.......2004-12-05

I took a few courses with Professor Grant at the University of Massachusetts Boston, where this was one of the required texts. I must say his courses and his texts has turned out to be most valuable and useful during my final years as a student of undergraduate finance. All of his texts were reader-friendly and insightful.
Dr. Grant uses active companies in the stock market (GE, Dell, IBM) and their historical data to determine whether they are creating or destroying wealth for their shareholders and bondholders using value-based metrics like eva.
His calculations in this book were especially easy to follow and understand - students of finance can relate with me if you have read some of those cryptic finance texts.
I would highly recommend Dr. Grant's text to all students. And if you are a UMass Boston student, you should take his course.

This book provides readers with an independent view on EVA.......1999-01-30

As a portfolio manager with a major NYC investment firm, it was refreshing to see Professor Grant drill down to the core concepts of EVA and its impact on market pricing. Everyone acknowledges that Stern Stewart has pushed EVA thinking forward in the corporate world but Professor Grant takes it further and shows how EVA gets priced into securities on a day-to-day basis.

This book is essential reading on the Asian financial crisis. It contains a judicious overview of alternative interpretations of the origins of the crisis. It then uses a computable general equilibrium model to analyze the impact of the crisis on different regions of the world, with special emphasis on the United States.

This volume is about the sweeping technical and regulatory changes which have moulded the new regulatory framework of space communications. WARC-92 introduced the LEO systems, WRC-5 confirmed the access of large international corporations to negotiating tables with member state representatives, and WRC-97 saw the first exchanges of rounds between North America and Western Europe in the global quest for new business markets. The forthcoming conferences of the next century promise to be challenging. The legal and institutional process, which charts such unprecedented technical revolution, is still primarily in the domain of international law experts. However, several other legal specialities also tackle space-based communications: trade, air navigation, culture, education, etc., in intimate contact with legitimate profit-making concerns and strategic interest considerations.

This volume is conceptually divided into two parts but actually has three parts. It is organised around the traditional distinction between international satellite regulations (Part One) and regional satellite regulations; this second level deals with North American and Western European regulations (Parts Two and Three). The outcome of this research is, first, to present the evolution of the regulatory framework of space-based communications, second, to underline the mounting importance of administrative regulations which tend to be granted a de facto status of standard laws and, third, to draw the attention of the public to the win--lose type of trans-Atlantic competition that is taking place on the global stage, that should change into a win--win scenario in the end. Good quotes, but not comprehensive.......2004-11-18

I added many (80+) quotations to my collection from this book, however, as per the title, it is not comprehensive. It's worth reading since (per page 197, quoting Benjamin Disraeli) "The wisdom of the wise and the experience of the ages are perpetuated by quotation." Some of the quotes are well known (e.g. by Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, or George Bernard Shaw) but quite a few are not. Many are funny--better than a TV sitcom. Some of my favorites are:
p. 68: Blessed are the young for they shall inherit the national debt. Herbert Hoover.
p. 79b: If all economists were laid end to end, they would not reach a conclusion. George Bernard Shaw
p. 89b: If your outgo exceeds your income, your upkeep will be your downfall.
p. 154b: Misers aren't fun to live with, but they make wonderful ancestors. David Brenner

The quotes are very well organized but not as thorough as expected. A good quick reference guide but if you are in need of quotes on a regular basis this one isn't as complete as expected.

Maybe I Can Do This..........2006-03-23

After reading the book I came away with the sense that, with the right preparation and practice, a person can learn to be an effective public speaker. Entries on audience assessment, the opening two minutes of a speech, spicing up dull speeches, overcoming writers block, and finding good stories were helpful.

I agree with other reviewers that most of the one-liners and short comedy stories belong to another era. However I do not believe it diminishes the value of this handbook. Orben's stories of writing for comedians and presidents make the book engaging.

Orban recommends joining a Toastmaster's group to practice various aspects of public speaking. I would add that, in addition to reading books like this, watching and listening to public speakers is a helpful way to learn to speak, especially as it relates to comedy.

Does what it says.......2004-08-01

My brother is a professional humorist and because I was preparing a presentation, and for the first time I decided to use humor, he recommended this book. I briefly ready through it at his home, enough to know that it provides the basics for using humor in presentations - and does it well. I bought my own copy to study it thoroughly and keep as a reference.

I have not read this particular book, but I did read 2,000 Sure Fire-Jokes for Speakers. It should be titled,"2,000 Ways to Get a Tomatoe Thrown at You or Jokes to say to Embarass Yourself at an Event". I'm serious. I would not recommend any of his books.

He knows a lot about humor........2001-07-21

Orben has been around for quite a while. In the 50s and 60s he wrote a lot of booklets that helped comedians. In the 70s he switched to helping business people. And it certainly does take a comic genius to make some of those people funny. In fact, he was so good that a President of the United States requested his services (maybe more than one?) Somebody who is more 'comedian' oriented might not go for Orben these days. But he certainly has plenty of good things to tell the professional speakers. Anything negative about the book? Would have preferred a more workable Table of Contents and an Index. Getting back to positives, a good poker player has to remember what cards were played and a good "funny man" has to remember what joke to tell. And believe Benjamin Franklin once said something like this: "You have to know when to be quiet, and you have to know the right moment to talk, and when you talk you have to know what to say." And not only did he say that, but he published many wise sayings. But getting back to Orben, his ideas and lines could help your presentation.

This book is published in 2000, but the jokes all read like they're from the 1950's. These jokes are insipid. Do yourself a favor and find something better. I'm returning my copy.

Ancient Reprint is Showing Its Age.......2001-02-21

This reprint of a 1971 book is showing its age. A lot of jokes have context that the current reader can not know or relate to. I wonder if a lot of them were that good at the time. As a reference it may have current value when looking for a joke in a specific context. All the jokes are by subject. The only Sure Fire is to burn this book. It is fascinating to see what you can sell once you get a name. I have belatedly discovered that jokes books are not of much value in public speaking. At two jokes per penny it is more that twice as expensive than "3500 Good Jokes for Speakers by Gerald F Lieberman" See my review of that book.

I give it three stars since I've only read half the book. I've been puuting Orben's secrets to work already.

I cannot believe how awful this book is. I've searched and searched for ANY jokes that make me laugh, to no avail. The best joke is the fact that I actually purchased the book to begin with. Don't be fooled by the title!
