Book Description
Everything a trader needs to know to develop a successful system
Technical analysis--the reading of price and volume charts to identify trading opportunities--has long been a staple in the trader's toolkit. Well before computers took much of the labor out of technical analysis, traders have examined trends, filters, patterns, and especially indicators to help them identify when to get in and out of trades for maximum profit. Now, a highly experienced analyst divulges his proven techniques for identifying the major trend, determining the "trend within the trend," finding the optimal entry, and then choosing the right time to get out. He shows traders how to most effectively use multiple indicators and know what they are really telling about the markets. While his techniques can be used without the aid of computers, he explains how readers can automate their systems using commercially available software.
John F. Clayburg (Coon Rapids, IL) is a technical analyst with over twenty years in the game. He is the developer of the Cylone S & P Day Trading System and the author and developer of Parallel User Function Technology, a unique self-adaptive trading software platform.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting strategies, but don't try it with real money........2006-05-06
There are some entry strategies, stop placements, and indictor setups (clayburg method) in this book. It's a good read in a sense that it provided some good groundwork and concept of a trading plan/strategies/tactics... etc. Oscillating indictors don't quite work in a trending market, so if people wants to trade that method (and EXACTLY that method) in the current market, then all they would see are a bunch of indicators in the oversold area. If you want to daytrade using only information from this book... bad idea too, it is far from a complete strategy. Overall, a good book to read, hey, Clayburg knows how to write a book, reader friendly, and alot of hype. So read between the lines and pickup something useful from the book. I give it 4.5 stars for the info, but minus 1.5 stars for the hype.
signals don't work.......2004-07-12
I agree with the writer who programmed Clayburg's signals into his software; the idea of entering a long position in the countertrend simply doesn't work most of the time. Other than that, the book is gramatically well written.
Well intended, but misguided.......2004-05-23
First, let me clarify an important distinction between my rating of this book and my overview of the authors' intentions. I firmly believe the author has made a sincere effort at conveying valuable information on daytrading. His writing is thoughtful, clear and professional, and he goes out of his way explaining, and re-explaining important concepts. That being said, I believe the author's intents---however well meant---are misplaced. Based on my experience having tried Clayburg's method since December, I find that it simply doesn't work. If it had, I'd be touting the book from the rooftops.
Because a book presents ideas and theorems in an authoritative way doesn't make those theorems accurate. But that's precisely what I believe unfolds here. Let's take, for example, Clayburg's core thesis which he calls the "Directional Day Filter." He claims that by drawing an x/y axis from the first bar in the opening range, one can determine with '75%' accuracy the trend bias of the day. So I examined and backtested literally hundreds of charts but could simply find no consistent correlation to this claim. For example, while there *are* stocks which show an upward bias based on the DDF, there are as many which don't, others which break down and show a bearish bias, and still others which are 'bearish' according to the DDF but then retrace and make positive gains the rest of the day.
Clayburg offers yet another questionable strategy which involves setting buy or sell stops above or below key resistance/support points which he calls "categories" of resistance or support. For example, when a bullish stock is retracing (correcting), finding key resistance category points within the correction can serve as entry points later on---i.e. finding the "trend within the trend." This is supposedly bolstered by the confirmation of multiple indicators such as stochastics, Williams % and RSI. But again, I found that while some entry points triggered well after category resistance or support thresholds were met, others were simply 'headfakes' and quickly reversed. In other words, more random behavior which if you believe in the veracity of the DDF, is not supposed to happen to any large degree.
Still another problem is the authors' inclusion of sideways markets and how to trade them. Here, he claims that indicators often work the best, and he shows examples of long and short trades being made in choppy whipsaw markets. Problem is, the examples tend to highlight stocks which happen to be making wide-ranging moves higher and lower of a point or more. However in my own analysis, I often found such wide moves were the exception and not rule. Still, this strategy might work if you are simply planning to scalp fractions of a point all day. Many traders, however, don't prefer scalping, and many don't have the capital leverage to do so even if they wished.
While Clayburg humbly admits that traders should tweak their own systems to fit their own needs and claims to have presented positive as well as negative examples in the name of fairness, the fact is that he presents chart after chart which shows his system's benefits, but I could not corroborate those benefits after examining a large and random selection of liquid stocks.
The one positive that I did come away with from this book was Clayburg's insightful analysis of why oscillator and momentum type indicators work---and don't work. I've never come accross any other trading book which quite explained this dilemma the way Clayburg does, and have never thought about stochastics the same way since. Briefly, he explains how indicators work best when representing the trend; for instance, stochastics will give far more accurate *buy* signals in an uptrend than sell signals, and vica versa---a fact which has probably bankrupted many new (and veteran) traders as well as given indicators a bad name. Though intriguing, this information alone is not worth the price of the book. One would do better to read Linc who presents what appears to be a simple analysis of trading, but contains many very important layers of information that traders would do well to heed.
Interesting, but system doesn't work well.......2003-11-12
Well, I enjoyed the book immensely, and liked the author's concept of the Directional Day Filter. Anyway, he bases his entire system on breakouts against the trend. Using my live market feed, I automated his rules to a letter via a homegrown app, and my losses mounted by the day. I implemented his definition of Support and Resistance, and whenever I broke through these levels, and the appropriate stochastic indicators indicated that I buy or sell, I would buy or sell short appropriately, and the stock would invariably reverse shortly thereafter. His mechanism was not reliable at all. To the contrary, you can get some good info from his book, and trade of support and resistance levels by themselves, reversing position when these respective levels are hit. This makes entirely more sense, and will allow you to profit consistently, contrary to what the author stipulates.
Excellent.......2003-07-06
One of the few books that presents a truly viable short term trading method (sub 5 min charts). Clayburg meticulously "babies" you through the setup, procedure and entries. The charts are presented step by step and then bombs you with example after example. It is also annoying how well his setup is explained. If you are looking for an logical method of daytrading, this has to be on your desk.

Book Description
Written primarily for business managers and government officials, this is a comprehensive and extremely timely handbook on how to successfully initiate and implement joint ventures and direct investments in China. The authors combine in one volume an appreciation of the nuances faced in the negotiation of U.S.-Chinese joint ventures, an examination of the investment environment in China and an assessment of its past traditions, present policies, and emerging problems. Case studies of a variety of actual joint ventures are especially valuable for readers involved in or planning to open negotiations in China. Several chapters assess the impacts of the events in Tianamen Square on foreign direct investment in the country. The book opens with two chapters which examine the reasons for China's open policy and the responses of foreign investors to the new policy. A group of chapters then explores the country's investment, cultural, and legal environments and their likely impacts on joint venture negotiations. Turning to an examination of Chinese markets and production capabilities, the authors assess consumption patterns, decision making, customer/supplier relations, local sourcing problems, transportation, the availability of skilled labor, management, and R&D. They go on to analyze the contributions of foreign direct investment, including the role of transnational corporations, and present a step-by-step guide to negotiating a joint venture in China and implementing the agreement reached. Finally, the authors look at prospects for development and modernization in China, particularly in terms of the trend towards recentralization following the Tianamen Square upheaval. In addition to business development managers, students in international business programs will find Direct Investment and Joint Ventures in China an indispensable resource.

Intelligence breathes thru the pages.......2003-01-09
Shapiro obviously has had years of experience negotiating. He writes clearly and it would be a beneficial book for anyone, students or those already in the field, to read. If I were to teach a course on joint ventures, this would be the text of choice.
Poor read and not factual........1999-02-18
I spent many years living in China and found too many flaws with this book.
Prevents joint venture mistakes.......1997-03-02
Anyone considering negotiating any joint venture would benefit from the checklists and other considerations raised by Shapiro who actually negotiated the showcase Xerox-Shanghai joint venture

Customer Reviews:
A Remarkable Accomplishment.......2003-03-05
Due Diligence for Global Deal Making is one of the most enlightening and comprehensive books of its kind. Editor and contributor Arthur Rosenbloom has identified a group of thoughtful, experienced due diligence practitioners who describe the process from seven different points of view. The process is covered both from an in-bound and an out-bound standpoint. Despite the diversity of perspectives, the book maintains a consistent style and voice and refrains from undue repetition.
Each of the seven substantive chapters looks at a business using a slightly different lens: strategic, operational, financial and accounting, legal, tax, organizational and, oddly but perhaps most interestingly, the Internet. Scattered through the chapter are cautionary tales of what can go wrong in the real world if the practitioner or the client cuts corners. At the end of each chapter is a series of charts and lists which sets forth the subjects of investigation, often with indications of where to find the information or how it is important to the evaluation of the target.
For anyone who has to conduct, supervise or coordinate due diligence, this overview is remarkably helpful. For the young attorney, accountant or business strategist, Due Diligence provides a veritable Bible for his or her own due diligence. But more importantly, the book informs the reader how the information gleaned fits into the overall process.
Rosenbloom's brief but enlightening look at the due diligence world post 9/11 is among the most compelling parts of the book. This section alone can be worth the price of the book. The possible effects of terrorism or war on a business, in concrete terms, or on the material adverse change or force majeure clauses of a contract are sobering and helpful.
Describing due diligence from seven points of view and then domestic and foreign aspects on top of that is a tall order. This informative book is a remarkable, and even entertaining accomplishment...
Packed with Knowledge!.......2003-02-26
As with marriage, the success rate for global deal-making should give the wise investor pause. Most such mergers and acquisitions do not increase shareholder value. Even with the fallout from the burst bubble still landing all over the place, the juggernaut of globalization is such that international deals still manage to engender a lot of passion; it seems the grass is always greener on the other side of the border. Business leaders know that sometimes the riskiest move is the one they decide not to make, since a good strategic acquisition can ensure your company's survival. For these reasons, interest in cross-border transactions will probably remain strong, as industries consolidate and as global economic barriers collapse. However, deals that involve foreign accounting and legal practices can be absolutely perilous without expert professional guidance. This clearly written, thorough compilation can help you avoid making a bad decision and improve your odds of success. We from getAbstract strongly recommend it to anyone involved in (or considering getting involved in) global deal making.
Do Better Deals by Doing Better Due Diligence.......2002-11-06
Doing mergers and acquisitons that create value for shareholders is harder than ever. It is even more difficult to do this in a multi-national environment. The compelxities of tax, accounting, securities laws and the regulatory differences add enormous complexities to the already huge challenges of just getting the stragegy right and executing it!!
This handbook, Due Dilignece for Global Deal Making, dramatically increases the odds of doing a deal better. Many experts believe that deals are made or broken in the due diligence phase. That is is where you figure out how much to pay, and the valuation is totally dependent on what you find out and what questions you ask.
This book covers it all from strategic imperative to tax rules. It also has an excellent chapter on my own area of expertise, people and organizational fit. I found the section on beginning to evaluate the fit of the corporate cultures particularly helpful. We think the success of true mergers are highly influenced by the cultural fit.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone practicing in this area, regardless of their area of expertise, as it gives them context for all of the other important, areas.

Book Description
In spite of years of clinical research and trials of a variety of new and promising therapies, cancer remains as a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Use of ionizing radiation in treatment of cancer quickly followed the discovery of X-rays and radioactivity at the dawn of the last century. The limited success of radiotherapy has been attributed to several factors if which the intrinsic radioresistance of tumor cells, their fast reproduction, and tumor hypoxia are the major causes. Radiation Sensitizers: A Contemporary Audit presents data on newer hypoxic cell sensitizers like senazole and deal with old molecules such as chlorpromazine in a new role of sensitization. Bringing together information scattered throughout published and unpublished literature, the book contains contributions from an international panel that examines new therapies and new uses of old therapies. It contains tables and diagrams that illustrate the concepts and make the information easy to find.

Customer Reviews:
Not-so-different from Bernard Werber's idea.......2005-06-15
I usually enjoyed comics published by Vertigo, like Hellblazer, Sandman, Fables, V for Vendetta.
But this one....could use much improvement. Its basic underlying story relies heavily on Bernard Werber's
Les Thanatonautes.
And most of all, when I read other Vertigo paperbacks, I felt
enthusiasm, and eager to read more- but with this one, I never
felt anything like that.
Rip-Roaring Laughter!!!.......2002-11-24
This is one of the funniest comics I've read in a very long time! What would you do if somehow you could suddenly see and hear your guardian angel, and you found out that he was ruining your life in order to alleviate his boredom? And what would you ask for if he offered to make it up to you by giving you whatever you wanted? This book explores those questions and shows that it's still true, "be careful what you ask for".
