If you have time and want to learn macro and micro economics fundamentals and how it can applied in a practical setting, then is the book for you. I used this book for my MBA program.

The author has used examples, charts, graphs , figures etc to drive home the concepts.

If you want to learn economics in 24 hrs, this is not the book for you.

I concur with the other reviewers...this is one textbook that is worth every dollar. The authors use color and layout so well in their instruction...a wonderful feature since economics, even with all its fancy graphs, can be very boring. The text is even engaging. It's a bookshelf staple for anyone who is interested in economics, student or not.

Economics primer with a right-wing bias.......2004-07-08

As others have written, this text is reasonably well-written and organized. However, it has a clear bias, presenting and defending a right-wing agenda. For example:

*Taxes, unions, environmental protection, transfer payments are bad.
*School vouchers, social security reform to presonal retirement accounts, medical savings accounts are good ideas.

Of course I oversimplify (slightly), but whatever side of these and other issues one might fall, it's pretty clear that the other side is given short shrift.

A minor beef I had with this text is that too many of its examples cater to the college student.

Very well written.......2003-04-07

This book will make you love economics. It covers both microeconomics and macroeconomics. It also explains how monetary policy and fiscal policy affects the economy. Some of the reasonings are counter intuitive however the authors provide very good examples to illustrate their point. I gained a very good understanding of aggregate demand and supply and how they get affected because of fiscal and monetary policy, employment, economic growth, taxes, trade tariffs, exports, imports, and other factors.

This is an outstanding book! It features a history of farming and soil/water conservation techniques as developed in the U.S. since colonization, and the pictures! Georg Gerster is brilliant! Some of the most beautiful arial photography in existance! I would recommend this book to anyone!

THE FUTURE WILL SOON BE A THING OF THE PAST.......2005-05-11

Out of the many books in my personal library and endless number I have read from other sources, this is the book I keep returning to and I hold it in high esteem.
It seems not only well researched and ultimately informative, but it flows linguistically. Every sentence can stand on its own merit.

The prediction made, referencing the specific date for pole shift, although unrealized, was reasonably based on combination of realistic factors. The planetary allignment occuring on that date being one of them. Considering that the original version of the book was apparently written in 1976, and reprinted in 1986, I would grant that it deserves visionary credit.

Just because the predicted disaster date did not meterialize, the probability of the pole shift forthcoming in the near future stil realisticallly exists.

I wish that Mr. Noone could write another book for everyone's enjoyment.

Unfortunately a bad title, but a great read!.......2005-02-11

Don't let the title throw you off. This is a great book about Pole Shifts. Personally, I agree with the current Geological Thought on this matter - which is that pole shifts do occur and that they have occurred in the past. Where I disagree with the current historical philosphy is that the pole shifts do not alter regional climate and thus impact civilizations. That is where this book comes in. It makes a long standing and firm argument for periodic catastrophic events. The book documents the points and theories in an enjoyable manner and is a quick and easy read. This is a MUST READ book for anyone interested in the mysteries of ancient civilizations and geologic processes. I rate this book most highly.

Earth Has Shifted.......2005-01-15

Not all prophecy occurs at the time they are predicted. The earth shift has occurred but not due to the planet alignments as Noone states. The ice is melting at a faster rate now then before the earth shifted. There is useful information in the book.

OK!, It's just about time for another Doomsday bestseller........2005-01-12

This was about as good as one of these books gets.Loaded with all kinds of information and opinion;in fact ample data to make the biggest prediction possible.The turning of the world upside down in 25 years .That allows plenty of time to promote the event,sell lots of books,have an endless run of TV specials,interviews,acedemic debates,plans for 'informed'believers and of course;survivors to start the whole thing over again.YK2000,was pretty good;got a lot of publicity,every good sized organization put up lots of money to ward off disaster .I guess it worked;all the world's systems just kept purring along like nothing happened.
This book is worth keeping for all the "information" and sources of such.It would be very helpful to a writer who conducts a market analysis and determines it's just about time to get cracking on the next 'end it all'.
I have been reading these "prediction" books for years and find them entertaining.And entertaining is what they are.Never has any prediction come to pass;but then would you be naive enough to expect it to? In all fairness we don't really understand much about the past;how could we hope to predict the future?
Can't say as I remember anyone predicting the recent Tsunami.
Don't forget the old adage "If you take the generally accepted wisdom at the time ;and take the totally opposite,you'll probably get closer to the truth".
Agood example was the Population bomb and Zero Growth stuff of the 50's and 60's.We were all going to be starving to death here in North America.What happened,now we have a major overweight problem.And guess what;nobody predicted all these fast food joints.And what about the idea that computers were going to hugely reduce the amount of paper.Oh well,we can't get it right all the time.Once in a while,though might be fun!

Funniest book I have ever read.......2004-03-23

I purchased this book for a buck when I was in graduate school. I am sad that I have lost it because it was the funniest book I have ever read! The figures seem to be haphazzardly placed with little connection to the text (the picture of George Washington in his Masonic get-up has no relevance that I could find). The book was bold in naming a date which, unfortunately for book sales at this point, has come and gone. This is appropriate light reading that always leaves you chuckling.

V N Gribov, one of the founders of modern particle physics, shaped our understanding of QCD as the microscopic dynamics of hadrons. This volume collects his papers on quark confinement, showing the road he followed to arrive at the theory and formulating the theory itself. It begins with papers providing a beautiful physical explanation of asymptotic freedom based on the phenomenon of antiscreening and demonstrating the inconsistency of the standard perturbative treatment of the gluon fields (Gribov copies, Gribov horizon). It continues with papers presenting the Gribov theory according to which confinement of colour is determined by the existence of practically massless quarks. The last two papers conclude Gribov's twenty-year-long study of the problem; QCD is formulated as a quantum field theory containing both perturbative and nonperturbative phenomena, and the confinement is based on the supercritical binding of light quarks.

Rich and satisfying reading, the small incidents, people and places in life.......2005-10-21

This is just a lovely, lovely book. It is hard to describe it in any other way. It is a series of very short and personal articles collected together which have been written by Rogers. They are part travelogue (and very much about Wales) but mostly very personal stories, nothing about celebrities, and everything about quite everyday sort of people.

Rogers style is quite easy and informal which makes these articles immensely readable. They include mostly quite unusual aspects of the usual, so in here are stories about possibly the last tramp/vagabond in Wales. His life, what he ate, how he travelled, the codes used by other vagabonds to indicate information about houses and properties. There is the story of Ali Pasha the last prisoner of War from Turkey following World War 1 (a tortoise in fact.) There are the lost children from Wales late attempt for independence who were locked in bleak monasteries and convents, a teenage elephant, and the largest sturgeon ever caught.

These are punchy and readable articles which have been collected together, so you can read them bit by bit, skip back and forth or pick them up and put them down. They are linked generally by their personality and style. They are simple but rich and personal stories about ordinary people and events. Very often those at the end of their era (the last tramp in Wales, a 'Bertie Wooster' style fisherman from the 20's etc.)

I would recommend this book to own rather than borrow because it is so nice to dip in and out of, they are really 'heartwarming' in the most cliched but nicest use of the word

This blends travel and nature in the finest of methods and traditions, probing the variety and comedy of encounters with animals around the world and lending a chatty, adventure-filled tone which should particularly appeal to fans of Eric Newby. Byron Rogers is a highly regarded British Press writer, much like the Human Interest editors of all the major newspapers in the USA. He writes in a succinct, informed, yet chatty way that endears him to British readers and now with the appearance of AN AUDIENCE WITH AN ELEPHANT, a collection of his previously published observations, the American readers can delight in his gifts. This small book is a perfect companion of light reading at the bedside or as an endlessly interesting collection for brightening moments during travels. His topics vary widely - from the tortoise captured at Gallipoli, to a teenage elephant that toured the Bristish Isles as an honored guest at festivities, to the problems with being single and coping with Singles Bars. Though some my see this collection as a variation on Ripley's Believe It Or Not, it is nonetheless continuously humorous and tender. Rogers eccentricites have a way of putting the world in which we struggle into comic relief and allows us to laugh at our own foibles. Good medicine, this!
